Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hoorah! We have a newbie to add to our group--are we all in agreement to add lil tri baby to the group? ![]() I know nothing about VO max. Can someone explain it to me in VO2 for dummies??? What comprises a good value? Would the typical asthmatic have a lower number? etc..... |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks. So, your VO can be improved with training then? How, specifically, do you accomplish that? Or do you just train like crazy and hope it gets better? Or do you focus on your breathing? Can any hospital do such a reading? I live in the middle of nowhere, wisconsin (really, it's a little village of 1000 people with Amish buggies on the streets). I think my lack of VO is my biggest challenge, as I have to stop so often just to get my breathing under control so I don't have my lungs explode out my chest. But, I'm really a bad exercise enduced asthmatic and didn't even try to run until I hit 40. As a kid I would have scary attacks in PE class. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The baby and momma are doing well. Amanda is just tired. We checked into the hospital around 0420 and he was out at 1013. |

What comprises a good value? Would the typical asthmatic have a lower number? etc..... VO2 = velocity of oxygen It's a measurement of the oxygen you can use per minute per kg of body weight. It's not so much a measure of one's abilities, but one's potential. Here's a general chart for normal values in females:
We (Playtri) use VO2 testing not because we care about an athlete's VO2 max, but VO2 along with O2 and CO2 can be analyzed to determine how many calories a person burns at a given HR and how many of those calories are from fat and how many from carbs. From there we can adjust their training to make them more effecient at burning fat across all their HR zones and thereby delaying the point where hit the wall (bonk) during a race. This is the sort of thing that's absolutely critical when you're talking about half and especially full Ironman racing. I've got all of Mark's testing numbers if he doesn't mind me posting them. Or I can show you my before and after if anyone is interested. I posted mine earlier in the thread, but lets see what an un"f"able athlete's looks like. ? for Aaron or Stuart. What is the exact formula for the VO2 and how does weight factor into it? My reason for asking is my first test I weighed 80.45 Kilos and my projected weight by July (second test) should be around 72-73 kilos. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will attach a file with my calculations on it. My scanner isn't plugged in at the moment. Basically it depends on a) the highest volume of air you expire in a minute during the test (not neccessarily the last minute), b) the amount of O2 and CO2 you expire during the same minute. These get plunked into various calculations depending on air pressure, temperature. This gives you a gross VO2 value. This is then multiplied by 1000 and divided by body weight (for kg) to give you the value in ml.kg.min. Mark, in response to your question - if your VO2max was to remain the same GROSS value (eg 4L/min) but you are 10kg lighter, this would be a significant improvement (eg from 50 up to 54ml.kg.min). As Aaron said, VO2 is largely genetic, and it takes a long time to build up. In the event of detraining, it takes longer to decrease. A better measure of fitness is anaerobic (lactate) threshold (coincidently this can be tested a lot easier, and without a lab!). The test I've heard of is to ride/run for 20mins as hard as you can at a constant speed, and get your average heart rate for that 20mins. This is your heart rate for lactate threshold. I'm not sure how accurate this is. Aaron? Ultimately it's a fun (not so much for the athlete) expensive toy to further enhance your training. But IMO absolutely not necessary for age groupers (unless you're trying to breakthrough to pro). |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() And the untrained.
What does HR play? Is my max higher than yours(genetics) or did my lactate test tell what data to use? Why did you move your TP and RP zones down 5 beats? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am impressed that a year of hard training could make such a big difference! I am also impressed that Bama could be an ironman and not have perfect genetics. To me, that is more impressive than being naturally athletically gifted. If you must dig deep into the depths of your soul to finish, then that is truly inspirational! I am going to be hypnotized tonight to exercise more. Not kidding. I'm really having trouble finding my groove thing training wise. Must be all the oxytocin circulating around so that I can lactate. My midwife says that hormone makes you really naturally sleepy like and unfocused on anything other than feeding the baby. I just know I don't have the spunk I used to have pre-Phoebe. I also discovered I have shingles on my right hip today. Yeah, I get to take acyclovir. I've had every flu and virus this winter! That may be part of the training drag, too. Poor me ![]() |

When your like Aaron and going for that slot you have to dig deep. I finished 14:19 and I walked and talked the marathon away. This year I plan on going hard the whole way. I would like to go under 12:19, but my main goal is to run the marathon. Proof it wasn't that bad was I had to walk up and down the stairs at the Galt house.. twice. And we were on the 16th floor. Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 2 WEEKS OUT FROM MY FIRST OLYMPIC TRIATHLON!!!!! Checking the weather forecast - partly sunny, high of 27 degrees C, 17kph winds. My wave start is early - 6:37. And I don't have to wear a pink or purple swim cap! I'm going to have a few early mornings this week and next, to get me more ready-er for trying to get my body to function for close to 3 hours at that time of the morning. The cycle course has one hill early on going out, and the same hill coming back. Otherwise it is dead flat. The run is an undulating out and back too. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() I am getting ready to sign up for my first triathlon. I've got a couple of questions. There is a beginners group and a clydesdal group. Since this is my first ever should I sign up as a beginner or a clydesdale? I have no idea on my swim time. It is only 200 meters so I don't want to mess this up. The race fills up quick so I want to get my registration on. Thanks |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How is everyone's training going? I've been down last two weeks, obviously. The baby is doing well and sleeping like a rock. Hopefully i can start ramping it back up, errr what ever Aaron says to do. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Doing ok. I've signed up for my first tri Memorial Day. It is a sprint which is pretty short but should be good for the first one. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Running is going good as long as I go slow and warm up before. If I stay in the 12 minute/mile range I can last for a couple of miles. If I speed up much more than that I have trouble lasting more than a few minutes. Right now swimming is my biggest problem. I just started swimming this week. I have not got the crawl down. I need to learn to breath. I swear I could do it as a kid. I guess practice will make me better. I try to swim around 200 to 250 meters but I am slow. With all that being said I have lost around 18 pounds so I am doing alright on that side of things. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good job on your training. I didn't do the crawl at all my first tri. I had just learned it and didn't feel confident enough with it, so I did it my own way and survived just fine. And 12 minute miles are good! I ran a half marathon on 12 minute miles and wasn't too exhausted to walk afterwards. Wish I could say I'm back up to 12 minute miles, but after taking time off for gestation, alas, I am too slow yet. I'm looking forward to your race report! And congrats on the weight loss!! That is no small accomplishment!! |
