Nutrition and bike questions...

Nutrition.  I really want to take a hard look at my way of eating.  Because I have somewhat of an "addictive" personality -- a little of something is always too much, and I usually have the most success with going "full on" with this type of thing.  In all of my reading and research -- which includes Mark Sisson's site www.marksdailyapple.com, as well as The Paleo Diet for Athletes and Dr. Maffetone's works -- this type of whole foods eating makes the most sense.  G, I saw a video on your website where you stated "if it has a list of ingredients, don't eat it."  That made so much sense.

SO, question on nutrition -- while eating "paleo" or "primal," as Sisson calls it -- no doubt that harder workout sessions require additional carbs (per the 'stages' in Paleo Diet for Athletes).  Since most of my training is sub 135 (with the exception of strength training) -- does this mean my eating should stay around the Stage V level?  This would be pretty much in line with Paleo diet standards...  G, would love your input on this...

Bike.  So, I have been toying with the idea of turning my old Cannondale into a fixed gear bike, possibly with a flip-flop hub so I can ride it fixed or freewheel.  It would be used for fun riding as well as helping my pedal stroke.  Gordo -- any thoughts on that subject?  Also would like your feedback on using rollers.  I have a set in my garage, and can ride them, just not sure how to best implement into training.

Thanks!

Nutrition -- as much as possible you want to eat real food -- you won't need much sports nutrition and, if you do, then you could be good too intensely.  For your longer rides, and for convenience, you can use some sports nutrition but it's not a requirement.  When Joe was writing Paleo for Athletes we did an experiment where I did a 28 hour training week on zero processed food -- it took extra organization but I was able to do it without any issue.

Bike -- my advice is keep it simple and just ride.  You'll get plenty of benefit from regular training -- the fixie will limit where you can go -- better to have a wide range of gears.

Rollers -- if you will ride more often and enjoy your training more... then they are useful.  Again, in and of themselves, you'll find that you make great progress from normal cycling.

Subject: Swim TT

My training plan for my next swim includes a time trial. It says TT for 500M (time/5=100M time) I get the math but I've never done a time trial before. Do I swim as hard as I can? Do I pace myself? Today I was to swim straight 800M easy after running for 20' and doing core work. I did the easy 800M in 21'. In previous swim WO's I did 100x5 on 10". My times were 2:00', 2:03', 2:05', 2:11', 2:07' I swam much harder than I did today. In fact, except for my 3 races, I've never tried to swim 500M fast. How would you recommend I approach my first TT?

Thanks - LB

Nice workout!  Have you done the course that you are racing next weekend?

I went over to the lake today where mine is next weekend.  Had a good ride and swim.  I cannot wait for next Saturday!

Hey Justin

I've not ridden the course but I've driven it and raced real close by. Maybe I can get there this week for OWS and a ride. There is a hill coming out of transition that is gonna be a @#$%^ I'm actually glad there are hills on the course as I am a pretty good climber, but on the flat I'm not impressive as I've not gotten aerobars yet (if ever - they kinda scare me)

Hey glad you are psyched and ready for your race next weekend. Do you have goals in mind?

Hey all,

Sorry I disappeared again. Things have been pretty busy over here and the situation the other day definitely didn't help. Haven't really had the opportunity/desire to exercise the past few days, but I'm hoping to get back into it again tomorrow. Hope everyone's training is going well. Can't wait to get back to the states and start some s/b/r training. Keep up the good work everyone.

Ditto, I am a little leary of having the break far away.  I have only been on the road bike for a couple months now, feeling like I may want to get more comfortable with the roadie alone before adding the aero bars.  On the sprints it does not seem like as much of an advantage as the longer distances?

Do you have goals in mind?

I do.  This is a different distance than my last sprint, with a longer swim and shorter bike so hard to say.  When I road the course yesterday I had wait a long time at two stoplights.  The race info says the course will be open to vehicles, I hope they will at least be handling traffic at the stoplights so we can barrel through those.  I am hoping to get in by 1:25, which is a pretty aggressive goal.  We will see how it goes.

G- my race (sprint w/ 800 yard swim) is on Saturday, I usually swim M/W/Th and have been doing your Distance Builder 650 for my swims since we started in this mentor group.  For this week I was thinking about doing the same days but not doing the drills, just doing 400 straight on M, 600 straight on W, and 800 straight on F.  My thought was to have the confidence I can do the 800 non-stop and also drop my time in the pool this week.  Bad idea, should I just keep on working the distance builder?  I plan to start the DB 1,400 the Monday after the race in as I build for my international end of June.  Thanks.

I'm looking forward to the race next weekend. Hopefully I will see Babs there as well. I just hope to finish without completely over pacing myself and then walking for the run. I don't think I'll have time to ride the course the night before, but I may be able to drive it at least. Not sure if that will help. All the little logistics are starting to build up.

I haven't gotten aerobars either. Just been on my road bike for a few months now. Maybe by the end of the summer I'll look into them. From what I have read it is the biggest gain of efficiency you get bolt onto your bike easily.

Start easy and try to swim each 100 faster -- that should work well for your first TT over the distance.

Justin,

I think the best day to do a long continuous swim would be Wednesday -- so that would be a good place for the 800 continuous.

You could also continue to use the DB swim -- not a big difference so go with what you think is best.

Interesting study ....

http://seedmagazine.com/content/article/energy_for_nothing

WHEN WE PUSH ATHLETES TO THEIR LIMITS IN THE LAB, WE’RE LEARNING THAT THEIR BRAINS GIVE UP BEFORE THEIR MUSCLES DO. IS FATIGUE REALLY JUST ALL IN OUR HEADS?

The finish line is in sight, but you’re not going to make it. Your lungs are burning and deeply in oxygen debt. The muscle fibers in your legs have converted most of the carbohydrate supply in your body into lactic acid...

Am now annoyed at myself as I had an entire reply typed out and then accidentally clicked close and lost it.

Justin,

I should be getting back sometime in June, but don't know when exactly.

Babs, That is an interesting article. I know I've done a number of runs where mentally I wanted to quit because it felt like I couldn't keep going, even though I knew I probably could. Thankfully I was usually running with someone who kept me going and I would continue to run at the same pace if not faster. A lot of my runs the fastest part is the beginning couple of minutes and the last few. I tend to start out fast and then settle in to a pace only to speed up at the end as I use up whatever energy I have left. Pacing has always been a problem for me and I usually end up running as fast as I think I can for whatever distance/time I'm running. When I get back and start training again running at a certain pace/hr will be something I'll really have to work at.

I didn't really feel like working out today, but didn't have any excuse other than feeling lazy. Figured I should do something if for no reason than to try and stay in the habit of working out. Once I started, felt like doing more and got a decent workout in. The dumbbells up here are really starting to annoy me though since I can't use a lot of the weights I want to as the things are broken.

Hope everyone else had a good day and got some good training in.

I would be a lot faster if I had a hungry lion chasing me.  The article reminds me of the Yogi Berra quote:

Hey I swam with the ankles tied today. Ha! It got rough toward the end of the length but when I had momentum from the push off the wall not too bad. Surely increased turnover and stroke count. Also tried it w/pull buoy, too and fins - did not seem to make much diff with either one.

What is the lesson to be learned from the ankle band drill?

Swam 1500 continuous today! Never ever did anything close to that before, Actually I did stop at 1300 to take a drink and assess whether I wanted to go for the full monty. 35:10. Now I know I can do it! This was huge for me. Thanks for listening.

I did 800 yards straight today!  It is not the Babs1500, but I was pumped.  By about 600 yds I felt like I was really in a good groove and could have just kept on going for a lot longer.  I did stop because I wanted to see what my time was.  I read on the site here about people getting into a rythm on the swim and I have never experienced that, I am always doing drills it seems and have not gone long enough to feel that.  It was a great feeling.  Definitely felt good getting out of the pool...like I could get on a bike and go for a ride. Laughing

Gordo-

I will be starting the DB 1400 next week, with that should I ever mix in long continuous swims or just stay within the confines of the drills?

Also, the countdown to race day has begun, my race is on Saturday.  Anything I should keep in mind or do heading into my third triathlon, two days away?

 It is not the Babs1500

Heh! The Babs1500, I like it! "Hey you, your workout for today is ... The Babs1500". Yeah!

Dude, me too. I dunno, I just never thought I was capable of it, but all it took was the suggestion that I should, or could. And then badda-bing, badda-boom, done.

Definitely felt good getting out of the pool...like I could get on a bike and go for a ride. Laughing

Gotta stop you there. I felt so damn dizzy when I got out of the pool I walked into the men's locker room.

Really did. Ooops.

Rock on Justin.
