Hi all!  I normally don't get on the computer much on the weekends since I work on one all day.  But, now that I have read 5.5 pages from our group, I'll have to log on a bit more often.  I love all of the info that is flying around...Cat - you are a wonderful mentor.

I took the new bike out for a spin yesterday.  Just a little over 6 miles, so no long distances..  It was crazy  crazy windy, and I thought the bike handled wonderfully.  The biggest difference was the smoothness of the ride.  I was on a Dolce and absolutely love love loved it!  But, this Giant carbon frame absorbs the road way better.  I can't remember what components I had on the old bike, but the 105s were a very nice upgrade for me.  I just can't imagine what Dura Ace / Ultegra would feel like!  I'll probably put a new saddle on (it has a Fizik), this one was pretty uncomfortable, but I'm going to give it a few more rides.  The only fit issue is the reach.  The hoods seem to be about an inch or two too far away.  I'm use to a bike that was just a tad too small, so I may just need to get used to them.

Well, I'm headed out to buy a new swimsuit.  The pool ate mine.  Anyone else have that problem?  They don't last very long before they are thinned out and see-thru!

EDIT:  I just had to go with the chunky kitty for the group list

There are lots of options to make the bike feel a little closer to you until you get used to it. Rolling the handlebars up a little to bring the reach closer to start out with is a really good trick. From there you just slowly start to roll them down little by little over time. Just check if you do this that it does not affect the braking/gear changes from putting too much tension on the cables - should be find on most bikes as they are generally assembled with a bit of slack built in!

On the swimsuits - apart from getting a new one keep your old ones. Its an old school swimmer trick to just wear two (one over the other) as they start to go see through to get more wear out of them. Works really well and means you can always have a spare.

Saddle on the bike are so personal.. can you try the one on your old bike for starters? Ive had so much trouble finding good saddles.. its rare that bikes are sold with one thats right for you!

Weekend went great!  Partied like a college kid on Friday night, Chilled like the 30 yr old I am on Sat. night, Helped my BIL kill a Half-Marathon on Sunday. Things were good!

Sounds fantastic!!! Hows the body recovering?

Actually I feel better than I thought I would.  Still think I'm gonna take an extra day to recover simply because I'm not in great shape! I have run enough to know when it is time to pull the reins back alittle.  Progress comes one step at a time!!1

I know there are a few people in this group who are just at the beginning stage of running - would be great to hear your thoughts/opinions on getting started and what to do weekly/on a regular basis etc if you have time

Cant just have me writing epic posts all the time

Rudedog55 - 2009-04-21 7:16 AM hey i just realized we have a couple of peeps from the same general area, the NY Metro area. Pretty cool!!!

I work in the White Plains Area, and live in Southern CT

back to regularly scheduled mentoring, lol

Ummm does someone want to draw me a map?

Okay, if I can locate Canberra and Sydney, you can find New York City.  Tongue out  Once you find it, draw a big circle around it and there you have the NY Metro area.  White Plains, Westchester County and even Connecticut are all to the north - or what the people who live in the city call "Upstate."

So my knee has started to swell again, which really sucks. I hope it starts to go down again within the next week, or else I might have to schedule another doctors appt.

How have yall been?

Btw, who else lives in NC?

Wow, not good about the knee. Do you know why it's swelling?

YES... The pool here EATS swimsuits.

They were having problems with the filters for awhile. So, to make up for it, they just dumped in a huge amount of chlorine. The pool smelled like bleach. (Along with something more sewer-like, that no one wanted to think about too much.)

And I was going through one swimsuit per month.

You do not want to know what my hair looked or felt like.... But it was pretty much this color.

Running pointers wanted!

I know that I overstride, and that I land too hard on my heels. (I take really long steps when I walk, too. So it's not just running.)

Any suggestions/drills for how to correct this?

Thank you.

Im guessing the common sense stuff:

- Fatigue

- Sleep levels

- Any unusual aches an pains

- Persistant aches and pains

- Motivation levels

You mean apart from dont do it?

Dee you have to mentally TELL yourself to take smaller steps... it will feel weird but make sure when your leg hits the group it is underneath you or JUST ahead of yoru body...And SLOW DOWN... going slower will force yuo not to take such big steps.

Hopping drills might help actually... but not with your knees perhaps? Butt kick is a fun drill even if it just sounds funny...

To be honest though sometimes its just doing it right...well learning too..

What happens when you try to take smaller steps?

Well, it's kind of like this: I take long steps, naturally. So if I don't consciously think about it, I continue to take long steps..... Which means I hit my heels hard, and some muscle at the top of my thigh aches. (I don't know the name of it.) And also, I mess up my knee and ankle.... But I don't feel any of these things until the day AFTER. (And that's too late.)

Actually, the only time my knee/ankle did NOT hurt is when I tried running barefoot (with socks) on the treadmill.

Something goes bad when I put shoes on. I try to correct it, so that it's more like when I run/wog "barefoot," but I haven't been able to replicate this. End result: knee/ankle pain.

If your leg lands underneath you..... then how do you move forwards? Or, am I supposed to push backwards more? (Ie: more glutes/hamstrings?)

When I take smaller steps.... I feel, uh, like I'm not going anywhere.

I'm no running expert, but I spend several months a while back working on my "base training" and that really helped me clean up my form. For every run, my ONLY goal was to finish with an average HR 1 bpm lower than my previous run. That forced me to really work on eliminating excess movements.  No more side to side, no more over-pumping my arms, and, most importantly, it taught me to keep my feet close to the ground and close to each other.

Once I got to where I felt like I had a good base built, I worked on throwing in some "strides" in the middle of each run, where I'd work at getting and keeping my cadence high for a couple of minutes. That helped me really shorten up my stride.

Nice..NC rocks lol, whereabouts?

Yeah, ive had knee problems. Tore an ACL about 1.5 years ago and tore a meniscus three months ago. It was supposed to be better, but I must have tweaked it because it started to swell again.

I think imma just spin at the gym for a while and lift weights, and see what it does.

Youve kind of answered your own questions here... but:

1) You have to consciously think about what you are going to focus on BEFORE you start your run, not after - Madkats suggestions are spot on... you have to DELIBERATELY go  slower

2) If your shoes are giving your grief then you have the WRONG shoes.... do you know if you over or under pronate? Chances are you are wearing shoes that are not right for your natural biomechanics

3) I KNOW you hate docs but a podiatrist might be good for you...

Umm yeah.... clearly I need to explain this better! Wish i had got the physio to write it down when he was teaching me how to run!

Definatley NOT pushing back as thats like trying to put the brakes on... but you should be engaging your glutes when yuo run absolutely!

Let me think a bit more about how to explain this better...

The shoes may be an issue. I have Asics, but they're not the higher end. So I'm sure they lack some of the features that I may need to stabilize/cushion the knees and ankles....

I don't know if I over/under pronate.... Here's why: I'm flatfooted, and I tend to land more towards the side of my heel. But then, my ankle rotates out. (Therefore, my foot doesn't roll in.)

The ankle rotation.... Put your foot flat on the ground, then lift the heel up, and push the heel forwards and out towards the side, while leaving your forefoot/toes on the ground.... That's how I walk. (And why I end up with ankle problems.)

When I try to keep the ankle from rotating, I end up with knee pain....

Yeah, I'm a mess.

Ok you almost DEFINATLEY have the wrong shoes.

Its not so much about cheaper or more expensive or even the brand... some brands work for some people and not for others...

Sounds to my like yuo need shoes that will help rotate your feet/ankle corrently when it its the ground as that will take the pressue off the joints and the strain off your ankle. Like orthotics often do... so basically because your body isnt fighting itself over time as yuo adjust to the support your body relaxes and stops having to fight so hard for every step...

I actually had the wrong kind of shoes sold to me a few years ago... after visintg a running shop... a proper one (NOT AN ATHLETES FOOT where the 17yos work) they changed my shoes and a lot of the niggles just disappeared Its something yuo have to break in yuor body to get used to them but HUGE payoff...

IS there anywhere you can go to get a show opinion?

OK, so:

- keep feet close to ground. (Cat said the same thing. She called it a shuffle.)
- keep feet close to one another. (ie: no long strides.)
- reduce other motion to a minimum. (I'm big on pumping the arms, and that probably encourages the long strides, too.)

Heh, I just tried this around the house. (It's 1:45 AM. I am *not* going outside for a run. And I've come to the conclusion that the treadmill is very different than the road! So I did it in the living room.)

The dog now thinks I'm crazy.
