MLJ - 2010-01-04 2:02 PM My swimming observation of the day: The pool where I swim has a couple organized groups that train together on various mornings with a coach on deck. Anyway, I'm pretty sure 95%+ of the people who train with these groups are triathletes. Some of them are better swimmers than others, but I'm always wondering how these big, strong, athletic people end up taking so many strokes per length. Today, I watched them a bit closer and I came to the conclusion that there are two primary reasons: 1) When their hands enter the water, very few of them glided at all, or if they did, they allowed their hand to sink down. Actually, most of them plunged their hands down into the water somewhat agressively, quickly getting their hands down 18+ inches under water, and not extending in front of them at all. 2) Very few of them finished their pulls all the way down. I'm not sure why this is, but many of them were stopping their pulls when their hands got just a bit past their waist line. The net result of this is that there were a lot of very good athletes taking 18-25 strokes a length, which makes it really difficult to swim at a good pace unless you can churn some big RPMs. Anyway, I'm not sure if any of you swim like these folks, but next time you're at the pool and warming up, make sure that when your hand enters the water that you extend and reach forward while you glide, and also that you keep your hand up within 4 to 6 inches of the surface while you're gliding, rather than letting your hand sink down. Don't pound your hand down into the water on the entry like you're reaching for coins on the bottom, but rather stretch for the wall in front of you. Also, make sure you're finishing each stroke all the way. You can check where your hand is exiting by touching your leg with your thumb as the hand comes out of the water. Compare that to where your thumb would touch your leg normally. Just a few random thoughts.... -Matt

Matt - thanks for the illustrative tips on the glide and follow-through. I had another swimmer point out to me that I was sinking when I turned to breathe because of the fact that I was allowing my gliding hand to drop. I'm really trying to incorporate drills that will get me used to these movements. I do the "catch-up" drill to help me with glide. I don't know what it's called but I touch my thumb to my thigh and flick the water to practice following through on my stroke. I've been told that by exaggerating these movements during drills it would come more easily when I go to swim. That being said, I still take tons of strokes but hey, I'm new

Great technique tips from Matt. I used hand paddles to do some pulling drills a few weeks ago and found that it really made me concentrate on the reach and stroke completion that Matt described. When I took the paddles off, the improved technique carried over and I had dropped a stroke per length. I've also noticed that if I try to swim faster by increasing my stroke turnover (i.e., adding several strokes per length), I'm working a lot harder for not much improvement in speed compared to adding more power to my usual stroke (i.e., keeping stroke number the same).

NAME: Chasing Kona/Ben
STORY: Got into road biking after traveling to Europe with a friend and meeting some Canadians traveling through on their bikes. As soon as I got back I bought my first road bike and the mile logging soon began. Biked the entire rest of the summer and soon I had a trainer in my apt for the winter. The next summer as I was out of college and no longer in competition(played lacrosse in high school through college) I looked to use my bike to get back into competition. I decided to start doing road races, that was until my bike was totaled in a car accident. That fall when I bought my Tarmac I decided to get into Triathlons instead of road races to regain my competitive spirit, which, was inspired by my mother who did a relay with her sisters a couple years back. This past summer I began my training and did a HIM in Lake Geneva. By the middle of the summer I decided that I would prove own self wrong (I watched Kona as a kid on TV and thought those people were insane and that I would never do it) and signed up for Ironman Wisconsin 2 days after completing my first triathlon!
FAMILY STATUS: Currently going on a 2 year relationship with my Tarmac
CURRENT TRAINING: I have Joe Friel's book Triathletes Training Bible and look to build my own plan for Ironman this yera. I want to do a 24 week plan but am finding it very hard to decide on hours, along with just exactly what workouts to do when. I know what my S & W's are and want to improve on those. But currently I can only ride my bike on the trainer as I am still recovering from a dislocated shoulder and fractured arm last month.
THIS YEAR'S RACES: Only registered right now for Ironmand Wisconsin, but looking to also do Racine 70.3 and the Madison Marathon (1/2) for sure. I also want to try a duathlon early in the year to get back into competition. I also thinking about doing Lake Mills or Capitol View as a sprint so I can go fast for once! And finally just announced is the Centurion Classic in Middleton which I will use more or less as one of my final long biking days before I start my taper for Ironman.
2009 RACES: Time and money only permitted me to do the Lake Geneva HIM. It was a great first experience and I loved every minute of it....even crawling up all those damn hills on the run course.
WEIGHTLOSS: Weightloss is not my goal here. I do like to keep my weight around 170-175 during the season and I'm around 185 right now (damn xmas cookies), but I guess in relation to this would be a goal of continually getting my body more and more fit.

Goals for this month
1. Take advantage of this injury and get on the bike trainer as much as I can
2. Be ready to get back in the pool by the end of the month

And I guess my main goal for 2010 would be:
!. Finish Ironman in 12:00

I am looking forward to working with everyone so that we can have a successful year altogether!

I agree, I once saw her kick some major A$$ in a bar fight in Tijuana...... KIDDING COACH!!

If she doesn't run for much longer EVERYONE better watch out for her BIKE... She is logging some serious time/energy on the trainer and spin bike...

What training plan did you use for your first IM? Starting to say screw it and go ahead and do a full this year. I can always make time for training when needed, but don't let the wife know that I said that!

thanks,

Yes I am logging alot of time on the trainer. I am trying to build a base back up again this week since its me first week back to any activity since I took my fall back at the beginning of December. How long should I go on the trainer per day and what intensities should I use? I usually spin for the most and throw in some higher intensities for a couple minutes here and there.

Also I have picked out most of my races for 2010 and now I plan on writing my program for this year but I will take any and all advice, hints, etc as to what worked for you the past couple years.

For the trainer... be sure you are doing 1-2 Z2 rides... one for recovery one for LSD (as you train more you can add some Z3 efforts to the LSD), Id do and interval ride and a tempo ride.... YOu can stsrt the tempos with 15- 20 minutes tempos then just weekly make the tempo portions longer.

One week Id do short max effort intervals... the next maybe like Z4 (race pace)10 min intervals.

If you KIND of keep generally the same type work outs you can build off them and see your progress.

Do you  know your HR zones?

A did  alot of my training- when I was coachless on sort of a week to week basis rather then making myself a whole long program....I mean maybe have a genreic plan but really decide what you are doing by how you are feeling and what you feel you need.

Its really hard to say what you will need.  I mean som e athletes need three 20 mile runs before IM...some athletes only need one some do none.  all depends on how well you recover and what your ultimate goals are.

Some IM athletes never focus on speed work outs.... Some do a lot.  I personally think they help but they arent your main focus.

Ben- you can pm me and we can talk about some of this if you want... that way I will stop rambeling......

Hello everyone, my holidays will be over this weekend and then I will finally have access to a proper gym and bike.

I have working out moderately during the break, my goal was to increase my training running distance from 2 miles to 3 miles... I have not very successful so far because I get too tired to go on and do something else after running. What do you suggest? Would it be better to dedicate just one workout day to a long distance run (3.5 - 4 mi)  or just to increase my distance gradually with multiple runs a week?

Undecided

I'm not any sort of expert, but everything I've read says that you should try to get your running frequency up to at least 3 times a week - by spreading your mileage over a number of days, you cut the risk of getting injured along the way.

On the topic of bike maintenance, my bike is starting to squeak when I'm riding it. Any advice of quick things I can try to do to fix it? Do I need to crack that Zinn book finally?

x2 on increasing frequency to build volume. A lot of people also like to run/walk (taking scheduled walk breaks during their runs) when building running volume. There are some links in this thread (along with some info on stretches for plantar fasciitis).
