How about.... Your lifestyle determines your death style? or...it's in our nature to destroy ourselves. I know they are both somewhat morbid, but this is the world we live in.Curious to find out what kind of bikes you guys ride. I have a 2007 Giant TCR with speedplay pedals. I changed the seat to a more comfy one and added a Cat eye. Dura-ace and Ultegra components.

Embarrassing to admit but I know relatively NOTHING about bikes.  A friend of mine is a competitive cyclist and got me a deal on a Trek Madone 4.5 WSD.  It's sweet but like I would know any better!  Prior to this I rode my brother-in-law's old mountain bike - often referred to as VINTAGE - Rocky Mountain Blizzard with thin slicks.

I just googled your bikes - very sleek looking!

Fi,

I'm totally jealous of your trip to NZ.  What a fun place to do a race.  I've sailed regattas there twice and it has to be my most favorite place to go adventuring.

Well I'll be picking up the first bike I've owned since I was a kid and the first bike I've ever paid for in March (Birthday).  I'm getting a Trek 2.1

It looks like my Polar HR monitor is broken. I usually use my Polar for HR and Blackberry to measure distance and pace. Local Costco sells Garmin 305 for 170 and I’m very tempted to get one.  Any suggestions?  Is it a worthwhile investment?

I think that's a really good price!  I bought one from the Running Room 2 years ago and paid over $200 and I'm pretty sure mine is only the 205.  Mine doesn't have the HR monitor.  In hindsight I wish I had gotten it.  I like mine though - lots of features I don't really use.  Mostly I use it for speed, distance and pace while running/cycling.  I've used to during a tri as it has the multisport feature.  I've used it for the interval training program.  And once I used the compass to help me get "unlost".

re Bike - if you are thinking of getting a Trek you should visit the Yonge Street store and check out the bikes that will be sent to the March bike show (they may not be on the floor but ask) - maybe see if you can buy one and get a deal.  It saves them having to drag it down to the show.  I bought mine this time last year and they gave me a good deal.  I bought all my supplies (new helmet, peddles, shoes etc) at a 20% discount and they gave me two years free service.   Although given your height they may need to special order one.  Ask for the 'early bird incentive' and you should be able to get some $$ taken off - depending on the level you go - could be up to $500 or so.

Alex,

I love my new Garmin (Christmas present).  I had Polar for 3 years and it worked great, but Garmin's GPS does not jump around as much and you can't beat the small size and lightness.

I train (running) more by pace than HR.  HR has become a reality check more than anything.

Sometimes my wife will ask where I am running and it is cool to be able to say "I don't know" and just go and have the Garmin tell me how far I went.

Here is an example of the output, if you download your data to GarminConnect: Sample Garmin Output

Great tool, if you use it.

I got a Valdora race ready( Dura Ace Mix)tri bike for Christmas from the wife  : ).  I have only had it on the road a couple of times...too much snow and wet weather.  I think I'am going to have to find a saddle that  is more comfortable for the back side.  I still have the stock gel set that came with the bike and have purchased bike shorts..but I dont know if that will be enough.  Any ideas on saddles?

I am not really concerned with my bikes weight as it is full carbon including seat post, bars and handlebar stem....so I bought a soft seat with pressure point area removed. Basically it is a seat with a channel to take pressure off of the nerve. This does not eliminate me getting numb in the sensitive area, but it is 100 times better than the factory seat my bike came with.

Scott...

Could you please look over my training so far and make any suggestions you feel I need to make. Should I start splitting my training into longer sessions of one event(bike swim run) but slow down my pace? BTW..going to DisneyWorld for 11 days this Feb. Training may suffer a bit. Any suggestions on training during my holiday? Thanks

Saddles are a very personal thing.  Softer may work for some, while harder may work for others.  My opinion is any saddle will be tough on the backside until you get many miles on it.  Feel free to try out others.  Look for a LBS that will let you try and return saddles.  (time in the saddle) is what will toughen up that area.  After trying may different saddles, I ended going back to the stock Felt OE saddle once I had put the miles in to get used to the pressure points, etc.  Go figure.

Jason,

You have gotten much more consistent the last five weeks.  I cannot comment on pace, since you are not logging pace, distance or HR.  If you feel you can't carry on a conversation during most of your workouts, then, yes, I'd say slow down.

Assuming your goal is to be ready for a sprint triathlon some time late this spring or summer, you've got a good start.  I would recommend ramping up your long workout times in each event to: swim=30 min., bike=50 min., run (or run/walk)=30 min.  I know running/walking is tough due to your weather up there.  Do what you can.

Try to devote 3 workouts/week to what you consider to be your weakest discipline and get in at least 2 sessions of the other two.

As for your vacation, that would be the time to get in a heavy dose of running/walking.  I suspect your accomodations may have a excercise room with the basics.  You are obviously well versed on using a spin bike or excercise bike.  Decent pools are hit or miss.  Given all the walking you likely will be doing anyway, I'd do several shorter, more intense runs with some time on the bike and whatever pans out as far as pools.

Thanks Scott. I figure I will have way more questions closer to race day. Right now I am just trying to train hard. Having a few issues with a sore right hip and knee. Probably related to my ACL reconstruction. Shoulder ultrasound revealed a small tear in the rotator cuff. This is not affecting my swimming....yet. I have to find out what needs to be done in order to make it feel normal again.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!  Another week begins!  I'm feeling pretty good about my training though I missed a couple of swims and a ride last week.  But I love the look of a fresh calendar waiting to fill up with little peach squares!  Fresh start woo hoo!

Oh and I suck re: the 5-in-5.  Was doing good but also had stomach flu.  Now that I'm fully healthy I'm back to where I started which means if I wanna keep up I have to lose 5pds in 3 weeks!  My body has been stuck at this weight for a year so I guess it's time to pull out the big guns... I'm cutting back on cheese!  Bye bye brie & chevre.

Hope everyone has a good healthy week of training!  Any big plans?  I noticed Scott's got another couple of races planned for this month...

Hi, I'm down 2 pounds in 3 weeks. Have a deadline of March 10th to make a dent in the weight loss as I go to NZ and it's into summer clothing.

I had a great mini vacation from workouts, yeah!!  Taking it slow and getting back into it.

Seems like our 5-in-5 group are all at the same pace and that's kinda cool.

sigh.. not gonna be back for another week.  I've managed to re-aggravate myself while running up the stairs. So its a week or two of taking naproxin "like clockwork" then easing back into activity with a walk to run program. I was on that before & its sucks. I think its gonna set me back about a month or two. I didn't ask about swimming but I bet I could at least to that.

I'll still be chiming in..  :-)

Jordan,

Sorry to hear that...

Most likely swimming will aid your recovery/healing in addition to give you a way to get the heart rate up during your "off" period.  You may fine spinning (bike) as low power/watts does not hurt or aggrevate your issue.

It'sssss FRIDAY!!!  *LOVE* Fridays!  I'm taking a half day today and hoping to get a good run in this afternoon - looks cold and grey outside but hopefully it won't be too dreary.  The plan is to also get a nice long bike in tomorrow and a long swim in on Sunday.  Ending week 3 of my plan with only a missed 1 hr bike and tempo run.  Not too bad (for me).  Such a juggle to squeeze everything in and not ignore the family!!

How is everyone else doing?  Lots of injuries this week it seems.  What are everyone's plans for the weekend?

My weight keeps bouncing around a bit but it seems to be averaging around 139 so while my goal weight isn't as close as I would have liked it to be (ahem - wanted to be 137 at this point) - it would appear I'm definitely down a pound since we started so I'll continue to plug along... sans cheese.   Two weeks left of the 5-in-5 to reach 135 hmmmm 2pds/week seems aggressive for me but I'll take what I can get and be happy!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!
