I had a good week and was pretty consistent after a less consistent prior week. I had a less than stellar run today though. I ran 13 miles and just grenaded towards the end. We started off the run with patches of ice everywhere and I think the fancy footwork associated with attempting to not wipe out took its toll. Playing in the snow Friday and Saturday was nice though....made a nice snowman. We definitely have never had that much snow accumulation since I've lived here. I'm trying to pick up biking again, but just spin classes until daylight savings.

Giancarlo-Way to go. 8 out of 9 workouts is awesome!
Katie, I think after three years in Florida I would be afraid of playing in the snow. How sad is that!
I was LAZY yesterday. I think it was the first sunday in months that I didn't work out. We went to a friends house Saturday for a little Mardi Gras Party. Crawfish Etouffe, Gumbo, boiled crawfish, beer, beads, etc. All I did yesterday was eat and drive.
Hoping to get back in gear. 1/2 Marathon this Sunday and then 4 weeks till my HIM!!!!

Never been a big fan of the elliptical. I've tried it for a few minutes and didn't like it. Doctor said I can't do any running but the elliptical would be ok so Its either the elliptical or nothing.  After an hour on Saturday, which I regretted yesterday, and about half an hour yesterday, I'm thinking its not too bad.  It's definitely low impact and you don't really realize you're getting the workout that you are. We'll see how good it is at keeping me in shape for running once the doctor says it ok to start running again.

Paul,
How long is the no running? How about walking on a steep incline on a treadmill? Treadmill walking at a 12-15 incline supposedly uses the same muscles as running. I did it for rehab with my achilles, and I can tell you it is a workout. The only thing that gave me trouble when I got back on the road was that I just wasn't used to the beating.
I actually like the ellipticals that have arm things. I am a big fan of the "total body" workout thing. I even used small handweights when I was rehabing on the treadmill.

I go in for a follow up Thursday morning and hope he will give me the go ahead. The doctor's concern is that the new lens they put in my eye will come loose with the bouncing motion of running. I have to wait until the eye has grown in around the new lens. Hopefully I'll get to start swimming again after Thursday's visit.

HAPPY HUMP DAY.
And for those of you so inclined...Welcome to Lent. I hope you got your sinning done last night with the rest of the world.

So, How is your week going. I notice that ALL of us have been slowing down a little bit with our posts. So, I thought I would share some fun.
Here are some things I have learned in the past few weeks:
1. BT is a great motivator, and a HUGE time suck. I could browse for hours.
2. Buying a new bike is like planning for elective surgery. It will be expensive, takes a lot of time to research, and may not actually happen for years.
3. Sleeping is goooooood.
4. Although we all have different motivations for tri-ing, it is nice to find such a supportive community.
5. I don't think I will ever weigh less than 200 lbs, but I may keep trying.
6. Running fast can be fun. (did intervals at 7:03 pace yesterday).

OK, that is enough from me.

Be well!!!!

Happy Hump day back at you!
Here is mine
1. This site is addictive, I do browse here more than I should ( but really enjoy it)
2. The mentor group has been the best motivator that I have had to date. I like seeing what you guys and gals are doing.
3. Training is fun?  (I'm enjoying my swimming and running more)

Another subject:  I've entered another race in April a sprint before my Oly race in May.  Still plan on doing at least 3 other reaces beside the two I have reaistered for this year.  I have entered a 5k on the 27th of this month as well.

If I could film this sure it  would give you a laugh...  I ordered a wet suit it came yesterday will try it on this weekend bought the $99 Xtera.  I'm sure I will look like a whale in it , hopefully on one panics at the race but may improve their time!!Laughing

Got my time in on the elliptical last night. Not as much time as I would have liked though.  The gym limits your time on the treadmills and ellipticals when it is busy and it was busy so I only got in 35 minutes and I would have had to wait to get on the treadmill and I didn't have the time to wait on top of the workout. I feel like I need more time when I'm on the elliptical to get a good workout in.  I had also left my HR strap at home so couldn't watch the heart rate to monitor intensity.  My family is busy again tonight so I have free time to go to the gym today too.  Thursday and Friday will be tough though.  My son has a concert that we are going to Thursday and my wife was given Billy Joel/Elton John tickets for Friday.

I've never done the 'lent' thing before but it seems like a good excuse to give up all the goodies I've been scarfing down lately.  Maybe that's why I haven't been losing the weight that I'm wanting to. So no more junk food for me for a while. I guess I should clarify, by junk food I mean all the crap I eat between meals.

I have never been much of a stringent follower.
In fact, I seem to be moving backwards. I just had a cup of whipped cream on top of my mocha! Half-day at school so I brought my daughter to the bookstore. Darn treats!

Things learned lately (and not so lately)

1.  yes BT is a time consumer.  I go to post my workouts and find myself online for long periods of time.  I find myself looking at races constantly.  Like they have really changed that much since yesterday.  My wife has to wonder about the internent time
2.  Once you get a base keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That would be much easier than starting at square one.
3.  The best part of doing a workout is logging it.  I love seeing my graphs at the end of the week.
4.  After I am done with doing triathalons I think I am going to take up winter biathalon.  Those guys are beasts and they get to shoot guns.  Can you imagine coming into each transition and having to fire a weapon.  How cool.  new sport anyone in?

I have been a fan of the winter biathlon for years. Talk about a tough workout. I love watching their HR drop. It is amazing.

1. BT is a TOTAL time suck.  At work I get total ADD and keep finding myself logging in, especially since committing to and IM
2. The Olympics are a TOTAL time suck.

I would definitely dig doing biathlons.  I had dreams about x-country skiing last night (and the last time I cross-country skiied was early in elementary school).  I also have been target shooting a handful of times and really like the calm and focus required.

I've been pretty tired this week and feeling kind of crappy during the day so I'm hoping to be out of my funk soon.  As long as I still manage to get my planned workouts in this week and get my work projects out, I should be able to get back to my normal self soon.  I completely forgot that military gyms limit treadmill use and have sign ups (probably because I wouldn't go near a treadmill back then).

Got my workout in last night.  I was hoping it would be my last required elliptical and I could get back to running but then I forgot to ask the eye doctor this morning if I could get back to running. I'm going to have to call and see what he says. I definitely don't want to wait until my next appointment in three weeks to ask him if I can start running again.

The good news is that I finally got my social security card in the mail yesterday and was able to renew my drivers license after going to the doctor this morning. I can now prove that I am who I say I am and that I have a legal right to work (and drive) in the country. Not that I wouldn't mind it if I didn't have to work for a living any more.

So went out for my first longish ride today on the bike in awhile.  last week I did ten on the trainer and this week I wanted go out found a cool loop that was 11.2 miles.  Kinda hilly but I felt ready.  Just finished and feel great!!!!  I tried to go real slow but ended up averaging 16 mph. not incredibly fast but not going slow either.  Garmin said it was overall climb of around 550 feet.  I am really looking forward to the even longer rides.  (I have a 15 mile loop picked out and can't wait to do it!)  next week I will do a reduction considering I haven't done one yet on the bike.  I will do two smaller rides and then this loop again.

On a different but related note.  does anyone else use the forerunner 305 and if so do find the elvevation data to be skewed towards more elevation.  I find big discrepancies between things like map my ride, the program on bt, and my garmin.  Anyone else have this issue?

Hey All,
Katie-Watch out for the crappy feeling. I have found when I get cranky it is often becuase I need rest. Not necesarily a rest day, more often just more sleep.
Paul, nice to have you back in the world of the card carrying card carriers.
Giancarlo, that sounds great! 16 is no slouch. Way to go.
I am hoping to get a swim or bike in today before my 1/2 marathon tomorrow!!!!

Yes, good luck on your half! I hope you get a good PR. Last night we got home from dinner at like 7:45 and I went straight to the couch and started falling asleep so I ended up going to bed at 8 pm. I usually end up going to sleep pretty early when I'm doing early morning workouts but haven't been this week because of the Olympics....so I think maybe I'll try to ignore the Olympics better next week so I'm not dragging as much.I had a good day today. A nice short run and actually got out on my bike for the first time in forever because it was 60 degrees today. I've got a long run tomorrow and then the week begins anew.

Didn't get in a workout yesterday and don't know if I will today.  Took my wife to the Billy Joel/Elton John concert.  It was a lot of fun.  The music was great and I loved watching drunk old people trying to act young.  The group of ladies we were sitting next to spent more time going to get more beer then they spent watching the concert. Today I am paying bills and working.  Thats what I get for putting things off.

Paul,
That is how I felt last week. Nothing like a concert/party to mess up your training.
So....
I PR'd!!!
I ran a 1:49 something at the A1A half. That is a 10 minute PR for me. I am SO PSYCHED. My last mile was a 7:25!

My wife did well too. She ran a 2:14, which is solid for her. We stayed till the very end to watch some other friends finish. At the end, there were about 7 of us sitting on the curb waiting and cheering for the last finishers. It was a BLAST!

Now, all I have to do is get back on my program for the 1/2 Iron in March.

Have a great week everyone!

Wow Eli. Good job on your race. It does sound like you guys had a lot of fun.

I did get my workout in Saturday, but I didn't get my work project finished.  Its hard to write a program when the people responsible for creating the files haven't done so yet.  Hopefully I can find out what is going on with that.  Things look like they're going to be getting a little crazy at work so I'm going to have to be really careful or my training schedule is going to get all messed up. I have three programs due over the next two weeks and only one of the several things that need to be in place first are done. I'm starting to feel a little stressed.

Ouch,
A little sore today. More sore than yesterday.
I guess it is good for me.
Gearing up for a crazy few weeks of family, travel, more travel, and then my first tri of the season.
I am getting excited for my tri, and am hoping I can maintain my training for just 3 more weeks!!!
