Laloosh - 2010-01-26 5:11 PM Swam 1200 yards this morning in 36 minutes. I know that's pretty slow, but that's the farthest distance and longest I've swam (by a lot) since I started training.

Congrats!  I'd kill to be able to swim that far in 36 mnutes...or that far period.  I'm going to follow your tips next time out.

Somewhere between work and grad school my training has really slacked off.  I keep finding excuses not to run bike or swim.  So last night I sat down and made a schedule that includes time for me to get a workout in. we shall see how it goes.  If you don't see me posting here every now and then e-mail me and tell me to go run  the e-mail is [email protected]. and I did run at leas 3 miles this morning albeit painfully slow.

Stick with it, Lance. When I'm running low on motivation, I'll register for a race. Then you can count back the weeks and try to plan some training. The anxiety of an upcoming race is something just what you need to get your butt on the road.

Speaking of racing, what is everyone's next race? What is the race you're most excited for?!

I've got a 30k race (run) at the end of March which I am super pumped for! I've never done a run race distance longer than a half-marathon so this will be a good endurance test. I know it can't live up to the fun I have in a triathlon, but it'll have to do for now!!

I don't have anything scheduled until Jun 25. But I think I'm going to get busy and look for something-I don't want to sit out my first real tri in July because I blew out my knee though. It lets me know how much I abused it earlier in life with long runs, Softball, volleyball and racketball.  SOmedays my 53 years really show through.

Aug 8 - Mountain Man in Flagstaff (half iron distance)
Nov 21 - IM Arizona (Yikes)

For me, so far I've locked in my first-ever tri:

March 7 - 2010 Toyota Desert Triathlon (Sprint)

Unfortunately, I just lost my job earlier this month so I can't really plan much beyond this Cry

On the plus side, I now have much more free time for training (when my MIL is here and son is at preschool 2 half-days a week).

I'm back to s/b/r after 3 days of skiing at Breckenridge with my son.  I'm glad to see my training is paying off in the real world.  I normally feel rough for a week after a ski trip.  This time I skied harder than ever and can proudy say that I have no residual pain except for a tendon or two near my right knee and that was only while actually skiing.  I even managed to squeeze in a run and a swim at the hotel.

My first race of the year is the ING Atlanta half marathon in March.  I'll probably run every Half I can find to maintain my run fitness.  The Fulls are just too demanding.

Laloosh, sorry to hear about your job loss.  Hopefully you'll get back to business soon.

Hey guys,  Sorry I haven't been around - work had me traveling but am all done with that for a couple of months!

My next race is the Ausitn 1/2 Marathon on Feb 14th - my wife is doing the full so that is our V-day gift to eachother!

I did a 5k race last Saturday morning and hit a PR with 20:48.  I darn near wanted to die around the 2 mile mark running at that pace.

I hope everyone has a solid month of training for February!

Great 5K time!  I want to get a sub-20 one day but probably not this year with the tri training.

SO true - racing short distances is so much harder than racing longer distances. After the IM (which I'll 'complete' far more than I'll actually 'race') I want to go back to the shorter distances and get better, get more in tune with the body and my abilities so that I can really push myself to the very edge. Short distances are definitely the hardest.

Another question: what has been your favourite race you've ever done and why?

Just finished a run and the post run ritual where my dogs feel it neccesary to lick all the sweat off my legs. Have signed up for a 5k in march and april  to make myself run. There was a sprint tri in Athens Tx on March 6th but I will have to miss that one because of work. hoping to find one around this area for May.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who deals with that.

Slightly off-topic but I've got a cat who licks my legs after I get out of the shower. This morning he was actually nibbling on my leg.

Well, I signed up for some swim coaching today.  The first one is this coming Tuesday - I cannot wait!

Unlike running and biking, swimming is a skill-based discipline. You won't get a whole lot faster by simply swimming more; however, biking and running more will most definitely improve your times. To really get better in swimming, you need to get some tips, change your position/stroke/breathing. You're going to get some real benefit from that swim coach.

I sure hope so!  I've read Total Immersion and then tried another DVD and have got a little better.  My real concern was that I am not even sure if I my technique is good or bad and I might just be training myself some bad habits!

My first lesson is on Tuesday.

I need to look into the Total Immersion stuff I keep hearing about.

Also, I did my first-ever brick on Wednesday. Took it very easy -- just 8 miles on the bike and a little under a mile on the run. Only glitch was a calf cramp about 200 yards into the run. I didn't have the "rubber legs" I've heard so much about, but that's probably because I wasn't on the bike long enough.

This stupid rain is wreaking havoc on my training. This is like the 5th time it's rained in the past month! Laughing

Amen to the rain complaints. We've had more rain in Arizona one month into this year than all of 2009.

Rubber legs on a brick? I usually get "bear legs"; I feel like they weigh 100 pounds each. That's like 300 kg to you, Krystyna.

HA HA there. Good one. :P

It's true, my one complaint is that I am small and that I just can't seem to get the huge muscle mass in the legs that almost seems to be required to get really good on the bike. The bigger ladies with the huge legs almost automatically are faster than me on the bike no matter their training!

Chad I listened to what you said about swimming. I have been doing the distance and decided to concentrate on form. We don't have a master's swim class, but I do have the ear of our local HS swim coaches. One told me I needed to lower my head so my legs would be higher for my kick. I thought I was doing that until I used a kick board today. My fist 50 was so slow I thought I wasn't moving. I made an adjustment and voila! I began to move much faster. Almost beat another person who was swimming. Anyway thanks for the kick I needed to make my workouts head in the right direction. I will be working on technique much more that before
