Woohoo go Josh!!!!

Vineman- I'm down for that... I've been trying to get to wine country and this would be the perfect opportunity! I'm might "downgrade" and do the half though. This ironman training has kicked my behind this summer.  Who knows though, a great race Sept 12th might change my mind

Unfortunately, the half is 2 weeks before the full.  Hope you have a good race so that you get motivated to do another full.

Actually, Laura, I took another look and there's a race called "Barb's Race".  It is a half (for women only) which seems to be on the same day as the full.

Thanks for all the encouragement you guys.  I am pretty stoked!  Do I have butterflies? Not any more, feels like all the barn swallows in my gut ate all the butterflies...  12 hours from now, we will all know what I am really made of.  Planning to be able to tell you on Monday that I am made of IRON!

Mike and Josh-

Couple of IM questions for ya....

1. During the race what was the hardest challenge that you had to overcome, and how did you do it?

2. Nutrition wise, what was your calorie intake and what specifically did you use and did it work? What did you have in your special needs bags? What did you eat the night/day before and morning before?

3. Did you wear the same thing during swim, bike, run? Did you change clothes at all?

4. Did you get cramps at anytime? How did you manage if so?

5. Did you feel like superman when you crossed the finish lineTongue out

No rush, please answer when you get a chance.  Thanks so much!

Mike and Josh-

Couple of IM questions for ya....

1. During the race what was the hardest challenge that you had to overcome, and how did you do it?

For me, getting a shirt on and tying my shoes in T2.  Read my IMCdA RR for the details.

2. Nutrition wise, what was your calorie intake and what specifically did you use and did it work? What did you have in your special needs bags? What did you eat the night/day before and morning before?

Not sure on the exact calories in the first half of the bike, but I ate powerbars, some banana pieces, and 3 bottles of gatorade.  Second half of the bike was almost nothing (although I did eat a Payday in the last 20 miles).  Pretzels, cookies, chicken broth, fruit, and some gatorade on the run.

I did have a few things to eat in my special needs bags.  Skipped them on the bike and didn't eat any of the food from my run bag, but did take 4 asprin at the half-way point of the run.

Pasta dinner at a local BT'ers house the night before.  A bagel with peanut butter and some fruit in the morning.  I ate an orange while waiting on the beach.

3. Did you wear the same thing during swim, bike, run? Did you change clothes at all?
I changed completely each time.  It's a long enough day that the few extra minutes weren't going to make a big difference for me.  In hindsight, I should have worn my bike jersey for the run (I sure wish that suggestion would have come as I entered T2, instead of 10-days later).  I advocate having the option of changing clothes completely each time.  If it's a cool day, you don't want to get chilled riding while wet, so it's nice to be able to start the bike with dry clothes.  If it's a hot day, you'll be stinky-sweaty and may look forward to a fresh set of clothes for the run.  (And don't overlook the likelihood of chafing from the salt-crust in your tri-shorts/top after riding in them for 112 miles.  Chances are you don't have a training run where you wore the crusty stuff you pulled out of the hamper...)  I'd also suggest having run wear for both hot and cool weather.  You'll probably finish the bike mid-afternoon and could be finishing the run between 7-8 PM (12-13 hours).  But you could also come in on the bike at 5 (well after the peak heat of the day) and be looking at running until 9-10 PM and getting very chilled.

4. Did you get cramps at anytime? How did you manage if so?

No cramps.  Cramps were unlikely since it was a cool, overcast day.  Then I throttled back on the effort after mile 67 on the bike and for the run since I deviated substantially from my nutrition plan.

5. Did you feel like superman when you crossed the finish lineTongue out

Nope, Superman is invincible, I clearly wasn't.  The finish was incredible.  I was able to high-5 my boys in the last 200 yards.  My wife caught me at the finish line (which was special) but I had to turn away from her to protect my left side and then tell her I needed to go to medical.  I think my finish-line video is in my album (read the RR first).  To be honest, the finish line was a bit anticlimatic after all of the training and then the way the day unfolded for me.

No rush, please answer when you get a chance.  Thanks so much!

Mike and Josh-

Couple of IM questions for ya....

1. During the race what was the hardest challenge that you had to overcome, and how did you do it?

For me, it was the loss of salt and electrolyts from my system.  I was able to bum a few salt tabs from another athlete.  That saved my race, otherwise I seriously think I would have ended up in the hospital.  My race was 97 degree day with heat index of 104 degrees.

2. Nutrition wise, what was your calorie intake and what specifically did you use and did it work? What did you have in your special needs bags? What did you eat the night/day before and morning before?

My calorie intake was.... not enough (I lost 7.5 lbs durring the race).  The night befor I had Chicken Marsala and mashed potatoes.  For breakfast, at 5:00 a.m.  I had a large bottle of water and a turkey on cressant with cheese and tomatoes.

Just onto the bike I ate a cliff bar, and started drinking "Zone Fuel" I get it at the vitamin store.  Also had lots of water on the bike course.  at around mile 75 I ate a package of peanutbutter/cheese crackers, bannana,  2 slices of cantelope and a clif bar.

At T2 (in the change tent) I ate three cookies, a big handfull of pretzles, two cups of coke, and a lot of water.  Did not eat anything else, but drank lots of chicken broth and gatorade.  Got really low on salt and had to take several salt tabs over the course of the 26 mile run.

3. Did you wear the same thing during swim, bike, run? Did you change clothes at all?

I only wore my TYR tri-shorts and underarmor short underwear durring the swim.  At T-1 I put on my jersey, wich you can see in my pics on FB.  It was just a sleevless 12" front zip tri-singlet.  I wore it for the rest of the race.

I did change socks a each transition.  If I had it to do over again, I would not change my shorts, but I would change my shirt at T-2.  It is always good to have the option.  Salt crusting up on my shorts and shirt  was quickly washed away all day from the many bottles of water I kept squirting on myself to attempt to cool off.

4. Did you get cramps at anytime? How did you manage if so?

Cramps, never had them in my life till 4 miles into the run.  So bad they made my legs look deformed.  Electrolyt and salt depleted so severly threw me into a tailspin.  It was so hot and sunny, I had real trouble (97 degrees and humid).  I had to hit 4 salt tablets in 20 miles on the run, just to get to the finish line.
5. Did you feel like superman when you crossed the finish lineTongue out

The finish was hands down, the most incredible experience of my life!  I was the last guy to cross the line at midnight befor they closed the finish line, and there was no less than 1,000 people cheering as I crossed, and of course my wife was holding a sign right at the finish line with your favorite quote "How does it feel to achieve the impossible?"

After the way the last 3 miles unfolded on the run course, I really mean it when I say, the finish line was absolutely one of the high points of my life as I heard the announcer say "Joshua Kugler from Pleasant Lake, Indiana, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!"

I did not feel like superman, but I did feel like Iron.?

Mike and Josh-

Thanks SO much for your responses!!!  I know that I can't predict my race but it's really great to see how different the day can unfold through the eyes of an athlete (ie. broken collar bones, severe electrolyte imbalance)...

I will def be taking my nutrition seriously.  For all my races up till now I just sort of 'winged it' and would eat/drink whatever they had on the course (although for my 50miler I did take salt tabs).  But I def need to carry my own fluid nutrition due to the nasty stuff REV 3 is serving (Cera sport).

I'm going to TAKE IT EASY during the swim, I'm going to TAKE IT EASY during the bike, I'm going to TAKE IT EASY during the first half/ 3/4 of the run..... Then we'll see what's left in the tank. I'm going to leave all of it on the course and finish w/ a smile

Thank you all.... Mike, Josh, Enrique, and Wally for your kind words and knowledge this past year. I went from a 'wild idea' in January, to being 6 days away from doing an IM.  This time next week I can officially say i am an iron(wo)man!!  I know it's going to be a tough day (weather predicted 75, w/thunderstorms) but I'm ready for anything!

6 more days!!!!!!!!

Laura,

You'll do fine!

If you read enough RR's (or talk to enough IM athletes), you'll sense that nutrition is a constant challenge.  Seems especially common for people to have GI issues doing exactly what the did in training, but the excitement/effort/(whatever) may be just enough higher that they can't process that many calories.

You're probably better being a bit low on calories (you can always eat something if you start to bonk) than being high and having your stomach shut down.

Beyond that, have a few options.  A few different snacks in your bike and run special foods bags.  By the end of the day, you may be tired of sports drink but will still want some calories/electrolytes.  (Opt for some "real food" like a snack-pack of oreos, payday candy bar, etc. that get you away from the powerbar type flavors)  Have the option to change clothes, and you can decide then what to do.  Figure what you might need to get you to the finish line in any way, shape, or form.  Vaseline, chapstick, second skin (for blisters), etc.  (Note:  If you use chapstick, have one for the bike and another for the run...I lost my chapstick on my ride Saturday morning...)

Haha... I think Iron is a girl's best friend, esp when she has great support to keep her going.  I really wanted to walk before I saw you guys at mile 18.  I was happy/pissed when I did see you b/c I wasn't going to walk in front of you. So you really pushed me when I needed it and I did have it in me.

Thank you again and again for making the drive. I'm sure you could have spent your Sat night all day Sunday doing something more fun than stand around Sandusky OH but I so glad you did. PS I have your signs on my garage wall and they are staying there!!! I love them

So... As I lay in bed (it's 6:45pm and I haven't even left the house) I wonder what's next??  Vineman? Racine? It may take me awhile to attempt to even look at my bike. haha
