QOTD: Are you going to be wearing a wetsuit for your OWS?  If yes, have you swam in the suit?

Thanks for calling me out Mark!Laughing  BTW, anyone can pose the QOTD.

Yes.  I'll actually be wearing a suit in the majority of my swims.  I bought a 2XU Velocity:1 last season.  I'm kind of between sizes so it is a little tight.  I always feel a little confined when I start the swim.

Discovered a good tip on here last year.  If you have been storing the suit for the winter, it is a good idea to soak it in your bath tub then hang it to dry.  This will allow the material to be more pliable for that first swim.

QOTD:  I bought a Quintana Roo hydrofoil.  I haven't used it yet but plan to on may 23rd in the xterra. I've never swam with a wetsuit before.  I hope to have a chance to try it before the triathlon

AOTD: All but one of my Tri's this season are West Coast Ocean OWSs, thus I'll be swimming in the ‘condom” (AKA wetsuit) most of the season.  I cruise an Aqua Sphere XP Tri fullsuit.  Like Tim, I also am in-between sizes, but back in the military I learned the same trick Tim shared on how to give yourself a little more room. Typically for me I need more chest expansion to help with constriction.  I swim OWS in my ‘condom’ at least once a week and have found that the technique (for me) swimming in neoprene is much different than in a pool.  I am fortunate that for over half my life I have been surfing, diving, skiing, wake boarding, etc… thus I don’t have any latent fear of the Ocean environment.  That said, however; in our Club OWSs the Coaches try and recreate the stress of a brutal race environment (grabbing, pulling, bumping, tugging, pulling… you get the idea).  Although that also doesn’t spook me either… it does tend to PI$$ me off a bit.

My bike will be here thursday and im going to get fit at nytro in SD this weekend, any tips on equipment i should maybe pick up while im there or anything?

At a minimum, you need to be able to change a flat tire.  So, you're going to need a couple tire wrenches, pump or CO2 cartridges, and a spare tube.  You might want to consider a small saddle bag to store the gear.  I usually carry a multi-tool and a couple links of chain too.

Before you commit to hydration, look at the different systems.  But, at a minimum, you are probably pretty safe getting a frame cage for now.

My advice, get the bike, ride it, then figure out what accessories will work for you.  I think you'll find that you race set-up will be different than your everyday set-up.

yeah, exactly what i was asking about, flat tire time.  k, thanks, i was thinking a multi-tool, CO2 pump and tube but wasnt sure what else i would need, for racing.  i will do most of my initial riding w/ a local group so i will see what they carry/HOW they carry it and see what i like best.  im sure theyll have the wrenches i need for the wheel at the store.  i have about a bazillion camelbaks so i will start w/ that for hydration, but will probably grab a cage online in the next week or two.

I have a sleeveless Xterra Vortex 3 (this is the suit that is often on sale for $99) that I plan to wear whenever I can!  My first tri last September I did not wear a wetsuit, and it was fine, but I'm definately a lot faster with it on.  I did one test swim with it in the pool when I first got it to make sure it fit, and it felt fine.  Didn't seem to require any particular adaptations, so now I just plan to use it on raceday or practice ows's.  Using a pull bouy seems to simulate the feel of the wetsuit pretty well too, so I use that as an excuse to use the buoy once in a while to keep a feel for swimming with the wetsuit.

O.K. Here's the way I view this question.  For running and swimming, I usually have very specific workout targets in terms of drills, volume, and intensity.  Whereas, cycling for me is more about volume.  I'm usually able to ride 3-4 times a week.  But, for siplicity lets say 3 times a week.  I would ride my first two rides with small volume, say 25-30 miles at a pace that puts my average HR into Zone 3.  The third ride will be my long ride, say 50 miles, but I'll keep my HR in Zone 2.  Another option is to add sprint work to the rides earlier in the week which will add some anaerobic activity.

So that begs the question, do you know where your lactate threshold is at and your subsequent heart zones?

No sir, no idea what my LT is; but i do know what my HR zones are.

BigH2OChief - 2010-04-13 7:11 PM Tim - I was checking in for the QOTD?

Shmeeg - Bro… You’re coming to SD this weekend and I’m not here!  It would have bee awesome to pop that bikes cherry on some sweet coastal asphalt!  Unfortunately I’m at Disneyland Friday through Sunday making good on a promise to my Princess (youngest) before I pull chalks for a week at the Pentagon.  I use a Bento Box with multi-tool, tube, patch & lever kit with CO2 and adapter and a Profile Designs DBL H2O btl cage.  The Peeps at Nytro will take good care of you and by and large wont burn you on prices.  That said, however; as you know… anything you can by there you can buy for less online.  For example… I just bought a Profile Designs Aero Bottle w/ Mount here on BT for $25.00 delivered.

Mark, BOGUS! that would be sweet to catch a ride together down there.  cool, glad to hear theyre good people, i talked to....dan?  or dave.....on the phone when i ordered my wife's bike last week so im definitely looking forward to meeting the group.  hey, tim mentioned we are both doing the encinitas super sprint next month.  pretty cool!  say hey to SgtMaj Kent for me at the Pentagon, ha!

yes, vortex 3 fullsuit.  if the pool water's 65 tomorrow, they will open one of the pools here and it will be my first swim in it.  im excited!  i wont lie, im pretty nervous for the swim portion of the events, hoping the super sprints will get me over that anxiety pretty quick.

Well then, I think I will dig up the information and post for everyone tomorrow.  Its not very much fun, but a pretty good substitue for VO2 MAX testing and Blood analysis.

I'm hoping to get over to UC Davis and actually do the VO2 MAX test while running.

Oh my, oh my!  The FedEx man brought me a present today.  I just got my race wheels back from the builder.  Hand built MTB wheels : DT 240 hubs with ceramic upgrades, DT Aerolite spokes, and DT XR400 hoops.  The scale reads 801 grams rear and 694 grams front for a total of 1495!

I just finished putting a brand, spanking new shimano XTR titanium rear cassette on them.

Definately keeping these just for the races!

norcal_SAHD - 2010-04-13 6:15 PM I worked on bilateral breathing a bit today.  oh my...  I'm pretty sure I drank 1/2 the pool!  I could do fairly OK if I had a pull bouy and kept my speed up, but definately had a problem with my lead arm dropping when breathing on my offside.  Which of course submarines my whole body and just all around sucks.

I guess I'll keep trying for a while, but it makes me feel like a total noob again in the water.  Just when I was starting to feel like I knew what I was doing.

First, kuddos for working on it! Now, do you think you where lifting your head to breathe on your weaker side?  Try to imagine your body rotating on its long axis.  If trying to breathe on your left, your right arm is extended, head remains midline with torso, and rotation comes from hips and shoulder.  One eye stays in the water.  Its hard for me to articulate the process.

Try to do some sets with the pull buoy for a while to allow you to focus more on just breathing.

I get what you are saying, I think I do it pretty well on my good side.  It all falls apart on the right though.  I definately lift too much, or too forward or something, which causes the chain reaction of sinking my legs, then my lead arm dropping which leaves me with zero pull and a completely submerged body.  I noticed that when I breathe on my left (my good side), I am looking over my shoulder almost behind me.  On the right, I'm looking more straight up instead of back.  One thing that kept catching me by surprise was that occasionally I'd seem to just sink a little, like my whole head would be a few inches under water.  When I'd turn to breathe, even with a good rotation, my head was still under water.  doh!  I just don't have very good (or consistent, anyway) balance in the water.

Thanks for calling me out Mark!Laughing  BTW, anyone can pose the QOTD.

I am going to be wearing a wetsuit for my OWS. I've never swam in it, and frankly I'm a bit concerned about this. The lake temps in my area are still pretty cold, but I think that I'll go ahead and take the plunge in one this weekend just to get a feel of the wetsuit as well as OWS. Trying to figure-out a good way to measure off 500 yards to swim - guess I'll just measure a section of the lake, like an inlet or something, that's close to 500 yards long and go for it. Hubby will be in a kayak next to me. Hope he doesn't hit me in the head with his paddle.

Any suggestions on how to measure 500 yards of a lake?

i was thinking about how to measure in the ocean for training swims as well.  i would guess you could count strokes for a 50 or 100 then just multiply accordingly to get the magic number for 500.

Have your husband carry a GPS in the kayak.  Once he gets to 250 yards, have him smack you in the head with a paddle, then you can turn around and swim back...

Fantastic idea! Will do. I'm sure he'll really enjoy the "smacking me in the head with a paddle" idea, too.....

Brian-Trina it is very important to get out there and practice the cold water swim with your wetsuit.  The environment is going to eb very different from the pool.  On a positive note, the suit will add flotation.  Your legs with float right up behind you.  On the downside, the suit can be constricting around the chest.  It can make it harder to breathe.

But, where the true acclimation wil come from is the cold water.  Having your face submerged in the cold water takes some time to accept.  Before cold water swims, I still have to get in the water early, float around a  little, then I'm OK.  Otherwise, I have a hard time breathing.

To measure OWS, I put my GPS in a ziplock bag under my swim cap positioned on the back of my head.  The part of your head that is normally out of the water.  The GPS unit will receive a signal as long as it is not submerged.  You can set up an autolap feature to beep for a certain distance.

But, I'm sure hubby would rather hit you in the head with the paddle.
