Randi,
I saw your logs. I wish I could help get rid of some of the baked good for you.
Glad that your shins are OK. Don't forget to stretch them even on days that you aren't working out. Especially if you are standing around.
Tell your son to wear the retainer. When I got my braces off after 6 YEARS!! I lost my retainer and I still have a snaggle tooth on the bottom.

itsallrelative_Maine - 2010-05-02 5:26 PM Eli - I'm sure the daughter will appreciate the room...I just wish I could figure out how to count DIY and housework as workout time.

Today, just got a quick run in...trying really hard to taper before next weekend's race - but it's hard for me to stop driving myself.

Hope all is well and everyone is healthy.

Oh, I count the work at home. Vaccuming and painting should go down as core workouts as far as I am concerned. Great recovery workouts.
You must taper some...do some short intense work at the beggining of the week and then some easy, keep your legs moving stuff the last two days if you must.

I always like to feel like I NEED to workout the day before a race.

trysprintolympic - 2010-05-02 7:18 PM I rode Saturday and ran today. I did 8.4 miles outdoors in my new shoes with taped toes and lots of bodyglide on the instep of my right foot with much success! No blisters or pain at all. The toes were white and puffy from not being able to breathe the whole time, but no harm done. I think these shoes will do the trick!

Ugh. I don't feel like going in to work tomorrow...

Jenna, yeah, your piggies do get a little funky from the duct tape, but it works. Over time, you will find a balance for how much tape and glide. You always want to find the minimum you need.
Glad to hear it is working though!
On another note, my wife finally went to see a podiatrist. He is a cyclist, and thinks runners are crazy, but at least understands the desire. He recommends that you have a full thumb width of room in your toe box in front of your big toe. My wife just ordered larger shoes to try it out.

It's official I am riding with clipless pedals.  First time out tonight seemed to go pretty well.  Just played in my neighborhood and only fell once.  For some reason unclipping the right is a lot easier for me right now.  I played with tension as well.  Unfortunately I think I used to put my left foot down first most of the time.   That's what got me tonight.  I am sure I have many more adventures to come especially when I am actually riding and not riding to practice with the pedals.

Do like the fact that there is no wasted energy on the upstroke.

Congrats on the clipless pedals!  No worries it will be just like well, just like riding a bicycle soon!

I got all my biopsy results back and I am lymphoma free!  Benign reactive lymph nodes was the official diagnosis. Good news.

Other good news, I swam for a little while today, the doc said I was good to go so I did a little workout and felt great!

Rock and roll!  Good luck on the half marathon this week hero, and good luck to everyone, have a great rest of the week!

Dave.

Dave,
Congrats on the good news, and getting in the workout!

Charlie, Way to go on the pedals. It takes some getting used to. I always loosen the tension all the way until I find myself "unclipping" when I don't want to, and then tighten it a little.

Yay for the great health news, Dave! And Charlie being in clipless pedals is also a big milestone. Woo hoo!!

I am not the one racing a half mary this weekend - that would be Jennifer. Mine is June 5th. I'm definitely not ready for one right now! I ran 30 minutes on the treadmill today and now feel like a creaky old lady. I need a lot more time out on the open road before I get to my race - but hopefully Jennifer will kick some major a$$ out there and show me how it's done!

Dave - that is excellent news. So glad to hear it!

Charlie - after our "tell the failure to clipout story"...last Saturday on my second outdoor ride for the year, I realized I was overdressed on my way out the door, got to the top of the driveway and decided to leave my windbreaker in the mailbox. I stopped, clipped out on the right and tried to get my windbreaker into the mailbox at which time I promptly fell over on my left side (while grasping hopelessly at the mailbox in an effort to catch myself). Glad to hear you are figuring it out. I completely agree with Eli's suggestion to loosen the tension until you are clipping out almost too easily and then tighten it up just a bit.

Thank you for your kind wishes for my race. At this point - I'm just hoping the weather is nice (last weekend, they had a high of 88 - and I haven't trained in that kind of heat!) and that I make my goal of finishing in under 2:30 (I'm slow...but getting faster!). My husband and I are flying out tomorrow, hoping to catch a baseball game on Saturday (nothing like pre-loading with beer carbs before the race - right?) and the race is on Sunday. I do think the flight home Sunday night will be challenging (mostly the getting up out of the seat after sitting for an hour part). This is my first race of the year - so hopefully I'll be able to reap some of the rewards of training through a Maine winter.

I hope you all have great weekends!

Jennifer, Sunday is supposed to be more temperate I think, like high in the mid 60's.  But if it's hot, just start our reaaaaal slow, hydrate a ton, and recover later if there's anything left.  I learned this week running in heat is very taxing.

I need some recommended reading for nutrition and GI information. My basic knowledge is there, but consider me to be a total newb and make suggestions as if I were coming to this from scratch. Nothing that would be considered a graduate level science textbook for example. Thanks!

Jenna, are you asking for general nutrition or tri race related nutrition? If tri race, what distance?

Great news Dave.  Awesome

Fell 2 more times tonight with my new pedals.  I may play with the tension even more but the seem pretty loose.  The neighbors are amused though!!

Let's start with half and full marathon race nutrition because my issues are related to distance running. But ideas for an Olympic distance triathlon would be helpful as well!

Charlie, I think it is quite selfless of you to take time to entertain your neighbors!  Great job!  I am going to be switching from spd pedals to real road bike pedals soon and I am looking forward to biting the dust a few times!

I need to swim in the morning!

Jenna, there are some great nutrition articles at active.com.
Here is one link to a search on Bonk.

Here is another on run nutrition.

Hope that helps!

Ok, crazy question that I did not think I would even consider this summer.

I am planning a sprint Tri July 10th, and another one for September 4th.  There is another one in the middle of October I am also considering.

I have a friend who is a runner only and due to the fact her running partner ended up with Heat Stroke and partial liver failure due to running in a popular 10 Mile run last weekend in Syracuse when the temps exceeded 85.  (Almost 100 people ended up being treated in the medical tent and 20 sent to area hospitals.)  Her running partner has decided to not run in races anymore, and thus is pulling out of the Half Marathon they were planning to do in October.

She has asked me if I wanted to run in a HM at the end of September.  It would be a short family vacation for both of our families, built around this race.   I am leary right now that I would be biting off more than I could chew but at the same time if I don't set expectations to finish with a great time I could likely finish and have fun.

What do you guys think considering I am really just starting out with endurance training, not sure if I could even build my run volume up there in time, but walking is an option I guess.

The Tri's are more important to me as I enjoy both Biking and Swimming more than running.

October is tons of time! If you want to do it, you definitely have the time to build up your endurance.

I can relate on the running is not my favorite. That being said, since you won't have a time goal, you should have time to ramp up to a Half Marathon.
I LOVE the half marathon distance. You need some decent training volume, but not so much that is takes over your life.
I also think it will fit with the sprint training, as your longer runs will be the same amount of time as your whole sprint will take.

This means that you will have built up the ability to absorb abuse and will help make your sprints feel much easier.

I would say find a good 1/2 marathon plan and use the total weekly volume as a guide. You can substitute a bike or bike/swim or bike/run for two of the run workouts and still be good as long as you get the long runs each week.

Slow and steady gets you there!
