japarker24 - 2010-12-06 11:51 AM Sam,

I wanted to get your input on wheel choices.  I am going to upgrade my wheels soon and I was really leaning to H3 clinchers.  Since you have raced Louisville previously, what wheels did you use?  It looks like you have H3 wheels in the photo on the cover of your book.

Thanks
Alan

I have ran a wide spectrum of race wheels over the years.... HED Stinger 90's, Stinger 60/90 Combo, Zipp 404's, Zipp 1080/900 and finally Reynolds Strike (66mm) with a wheel cover.

This year for Louisville, I am going to ride an H3C front wheel with either a Stinger 9FR with a wheel cover or a Stinger FR Disc. I did Louisville in 2007 on a set of Zipp 404's I honestly don't think that was as "aero" as I could have been.

jhouse- Thanks for the input on the wheels.

HED3 Wheelset- I used them almost exclusively for racing. The exception to using them other than racing was a short ride the with them the week of my first race of the season just to "remember" the feel and to see if there were an issues since my last season. I had them for 10 seasons and they are now going strong for somebody else.

Alright!  I am in.  Louisville will be my first IM.

I've been down to the race three times to cheer for friends.  This year I decided to throw my hat in the ring.  I can't wait to get started, but I'm still trying to decide on training programs.  I know that is the million dollar question.

A few other guys in town are doing the 36 wk TriFuel program, but I'm also wondering about the program from Frey and Huddle.  I did a marathon in November, but I've haven't done anything in the last 4 weeks. The TriFuel program starts in about a week and a half, but the shorter Frey/Huddle program (24 wks) would give me time to develop a base.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, I look forward to training with you all over the next 9 months.

I did the 37 week plan from triathlongeek.com and it was great. I will use it again this year.

Bret-Welcome and congratulations!
As far as your training plan, and this may go without saying, but whatever you choose, feel comfortable adapting it to your needs. For example, if you like what the longer program offers, but you think you could use some more recovery from your recent marathon, than take a break. Now is a good time to heal and recover. Good luck!

X2, I am going through some PT and therpy where I should have rested late this season.  Take advantage of the down time, go for walks, hikes, whatever.  I am kicking myself and learned more to heed what my body says, I want to hit January strong and ready.

I am staying at the Seelbach. I stayed at the Galt house in 2007 and had some cleanliness issues...

I stayed At the Galt House last year and have a reservation there next year as well. Cant beat the convenience. Several folks had success getting rooms at the Galt house or similar accomodations via priceline last year. For me, the price is reasonable and I prefer the certainty of having everything taken care of well in advance.

Hello fellow triathletes, I pulled the trigger and signed up for Ironman Lou yesterday, it will be my first ironman. I reserved a room at comfort suites in Jeffersonville, IN, its 2.3 miles from the host hotel. I picked this hotel because it was the closest  hotel to the host hotel that would give us the military discount (husband is Army). We are staying there for $70 a night.

I'm at the same hotel as Jillian...by the way...CONGRATULATIONS Jillian! ...and welcome.
I have stayed at this particular Comfort Suites Hotel several times and had very comfortable stays each time.
It's located right across the river and it's very convenient. I stayed here during the 2009 event and it's a great spot.

Thank you Sam, I've worked hard and found my niche in endurance sports, and thanks for the welcome! Thanks for the hotel info, I'm glad its a decent one, I was just looking for closeness to the host hotel and lowest price. I look forward to interacting with you guys, you guys are the only ones that understand and don't think I'm "crazy", "out of my mind" and "why the hell would you pay to do that". Fortunately I have a very supportive husband and family, I am excited about starting my ironman training plan in March, until then, winter building!

I understand what you are saying about people thinking you are crazy.  Most people that don't do endurance sports don't understand.

I am going to call Comfort Suits and reserve my room for the race.  See you guys there.

I can't remember where I read it or heard it but it is so true- "IF YOU HAVE TO ASK WHY, YOU WILL NEVER GET IT!"... I remember now, my wife saw someone with a t-shirt in Louisville- so true  and it is my usual remark to those that just don't get it. If you think about it, only athletes truly understand the monumental task at hand to achieve such a feat.

Here is another good one I saw in a shirt-
"Tomorrow I may not swim, bike, or run- but today is not that day!"

You might find my latest blog post regarding those asking if you are training for anything, mildly entertaining. It kind of ties into the theme of people not getting it.
It may come off as arrogant, but it's not meant to.

Personally, I think that all of you are not only arrogant, but also crazy! I'm so glad that I'm not like you guys. Now, if you don't mind, I've got to squeeze in a brick during my lunch break :-)

Misery loves company and yes, we are all crazy especially people that do bricks on their lunch hours!Cool

Sam, I found your blog to be hilarious.  I have been asked those same questions.  My favorite one is the "lung freezing" one.  I have started to tell people that your lungs only freeze if you run too fast so I keep it at a slow steady pace.

John...thanks. And, use the USAT discount through choice hotels through your computer while booking...unless you have a cheaper method. Oh, this is granted that you are a USAT member.

John, It gets worse. I'm actually skipping our holiday lunch at the office today so that I can get my work out in. Try explaining that logic to someone who "doesn't get it." Yes, I'm crazy. But exercise has become my medicine, and without it I go from being crazy to insane.

Sam, I agree with John - great blog. Usually, people have good intentions with their questions. Oftentimes, as a time crunched working professional, father, husband, & ironman wannabe I just don't have time to thoroughly answer their questions. Which unfortunately can come off as being arrogant.
