Emmanem - 2010-10-28 6:59 PM
rh8463 - 2010-10-28 6:50 PM I have a mini practice tri with a local tri club tomorrow, at a lake, and I am so nervous. a) I don't know anyone and b) I hate OWS. Mostly because I'm scared of sharks (been in the ocean a total of 5 times in 2 years of being in Australia), and I realise its a lake, there aren't any but I know how irrational I am when in the water and I can't see anything and I'm such a slow swimmer....

I hate OWS too.  First time I did an OWS was my first tri and I had such a panic attack I almost quit the race 50m into the swim... glad I didn't but it was one of the scariest moments of my life.  I have a huge fear of open water and don't get me started on sharks lol.  I'm sure it'll be fine.  It'll be a great way for you to meet new people and get more comfortable with OWS.

I'm with you two...  I hate OWS.  And I'm a decent swimmer.  I swam competitively from about 8-18 and spent every summer weekend swimming in Lake Erie.  But I HATE not knowing what's around me in the water!

I'm a big old scaredy cat...  I hate seaweed, fish and got only knows what else.  I won't swim with goggle in a lake.  I like being oblivious!!!

It takes me a while to get used to OWS each year, no wall to push off and the whole sighting thing.....but I like OWS once I get over the issues.

My cat likes that spot too.

Pool swim races suck for me......I am always honest about seeding myself so by the time I actually get IN the water the early swimmers are DONE with the whole race.

Emmanem - 2010-10-29 7:25 AM Got the day off work... YAY!!!!

Awesome!!!

I left the house this morning and wished my hubby a good day and he said, oh I will have a good day in a suspicious voice. Turns out hima and his boss are both ditching work to go fishing!!!

That SO sounds like something mine would do!

He never tells me when he is off work (rain sometimes stops work) because he knows I will give him a list of things to do during the day. I suspect thats why I only found out this morning and his confession was swiftly followed by him volunteering to mow the lawn this afternoon.

Well, at least the lawn will get mowed! Really, this sounds SO similar...

Oh, I can't imagine having to compete in a pool swim.

I also have to say I enjoy that I go a whole lot faster in the ocean than in the pool with all the salt to help keep my heavy lower half afloat

When I was in HS, I never wore goggles.  I could never dive in the pool and keep them.  And I figured why practive with something I won't race with.  So, I'm actually more comfortable with no goggles than with goggles.  But, of course, my eyes are wimpier now when I have to swim in the pool...  but swiming in the lake is great!  and it's one less thing to have to rememebr to pack for a race.

Actually, my last race this year was up in Lake George (ok, you all have no idea where LG is... sorry!)  but as we were getting into the corral my friend mentioned how freaked out she was by seeing the train tracks in the water the year before.  Apparently, an old railroad runs through part of the lake and we had to swim over them.  She got freaked out again but I never saw them!  I love being obvious...
