144 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED we have a couple of days of good weather hit about 70 and feels about the same today. I think I got a sunburn while I was swimming today. I feel a little tired but with the good weather I might try to go for a short run later. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED In case you didn't see my post in the regular forum I just posted, here it is: Has anyone else read 'Born to Run"????? This may have been a post in the past, but being new to endurance sports, I am curious if anyone else has read this book, and their thoughts on the "barefoot" running and the entire scam from the large shoe companies. Apparently, not one of them will step up and claim that their shoe will assist in preventing you from further injury, nor will it help you run longer distances. After reading this book, I am intrigued by the barefoot style of running. Not that I am going out tomorrow and doing it. Does anyone here run in the "five fingers" shoes. (I think that's the name of them) I highly reccomend this book to everyone. The first couple chapters are tough to get through, but then the book takes off. Amazing story about ultrarunners, the Tahumarha tribe in Mexico, and how we were "born to run" |

Amazing story about ultrarunners, the Tahumarha tribe in Mexico, and how we were "born to run" Read it, loved it, i've heard mcdougall speak too, i have vibrams and do an easy run or 2 with them every week. careful with barefoot running so go very slow and easy. it definitely gets you up on your mid/forefoot. However, like every "theory" its part truth part kool aid. so dont think geting rid of your shoes will suddenly turn you into a gazel - run lots, mostly slow, sometimes fast, but mostly lots. BUT ramp up slowly, follow the 10% rule, most runnign related injury occurs when you increase your mileage too quickly. Edited by jsklarz 2010-12-31 7:08 PM |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Happy New Year everyone! I really wanted to kickoff 2011 with a bike ride on day one, but this cold weather is killing me. It's currently 9 degrees at 10:30pm and falling. Pretty sure I'll be hibernating a little more first. Tomorrow I'll nail down some goals for the year. |

Extreme Veteran 585 Price, UT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Oh I am jealous of even the 45 degrees some of you have-We are currently at zero F. Our snow is going no where and much ice under it all making even walking outside treacherous. I am relagated to indoors training for now. New storm expected tomorrow. I am going to skip the contest because I have a week ski vacation over in Aspen right in the middle of it. Good luck to all of doing it. I will be trying to cut my calories down and use the success I see you post each week as my motivation. |

Extreme Veteran 745 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Got in a nice 10k run outside this morning. Its warming up, but there was still quite a bit of ice out there - not a lot, but enough to put you on your butt if you are not paying attention. I'm trying to force myself to get up early and get outside. With marathon training, this should get easier now, but its still tough dragging myself out of bed at 5 am. Tomorrow is a ten miler - even though its the weekend, I'm going to try to push out the door early early early. Have a happy new year everyone, and I'll see y'all for the weigh in. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Went to Arcadia today, group of 5, mountain bike ride. Someone told us there was no snow left there. That was not even close to being true. It was like plowing snow with my bike. Had a blast, but to be honest, there were times I was ready to quit, but never gave up. My legs are still burning. There were some tough climbs when we found the fire roads. Total ascent, 3,144 feet. The guys I were riding with are a few steps ahead of me as far as endurance, so I think that'll help me in the long run, hopefully come spring, I'll be able to keep up a little better. Happy New Year Oh yeah, we had no choice but to cross a knee deep stream at the end of the ride. My toes are still cold. |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: Bike Fit Yesterday, Shaun and I ventured to Vermont to get 2011 started off right with a bike fit. We headed up to FitWerx in Waitsfield Vermont (about a three and half hour drive from Connecticut) to be fit by the founder of FitWerx, Ian Buchanan. We brought both my CD.01 and my Tequilo to hopefully have the fit corrected on both bikes. The fit started off with Ian taking my measurements off the Tequilo (which surpassed the 10,000 mile mark this week)and setting up the fit bike to mirror the Tequilo's set up. Ian then asked me a serious of questions such as the number of miles per week I was riding and running, my goal races for the season and any issues I had been having on the bike. He then took a series of measurements from me and did a range of motion and stability analysis. Once he had all my numbers, I got on fit bike. FitWerx uses Dartfish, a multi-camera based system that helps athletes see and understand their posture and technique through dynamic video feedback and assessment tools. Dartfish is also a very adjustable system, allowing tools and specific analysis to be built and executed on the spot. This is my before from the side: While my foot position (the green angle was good), my leg wasn't getting enough extension (the red angle) and my arms were reaching out too far to support the rest of my body (the yellow angle). Ian adjusted the fit cycle to give me additional leg extension and to flatten out my back. This is my after from the side: You can see the my leg extension improved by about 6 degrees and that my arms are now directly under my upper body providing additional support. We next worked on my hip angle. From my range of motion tests, my "comfortable" hip angle way about 55 degrees. Hip Angle Before Shot: As you can see from the picture my hip angle was about 4 degrees tighter than my comfortable range of motion. We adjusted the bike to get to a more comfortable and sustainable hip angle. Hip Angle After Shot: We then focused on flattening on the hump on my back. Part of the problem with my back is that my body composition needs to get better and I need to get to race weight before I can really flatten out my back. Here's the before on the back angle: And the after: Once we had made all the adjustments on the fit bike, Ian recorded them and applied them to the Tequilo and the CD.01. On both bikes both the seat and the aero bars were moved up. The Tequilo even required a new stem. On the CD.01, the aero bars were pulled closer to the seat and on both bikes, the aero bars were tilted upwards. Both bikes felt great (although the CD.01 is probably a tad too big but with the adjustments it fits fine). Shaun now want to go back and have his bike fit too. |

144 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED wow! How crazy. I just got done putting my bike together and I was trying to figure out where I should be positioned and why? Your post really gave me some insight. Has anyone had trouble gettting the areobar to stay in one position? They keep moving up and down even though they are as tight as i could get them. Also everyone can have a laugh on me. It was my first time wearing bike shoes and on que I came to a stop and yes, you guessed it. I couldn't get me feet out of the clip and down I went. Pretty funny because my son was watching and he wanted to give me his training wheels. |
