Master 1734 On a lake in the Adirondacks in NY | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed My first 5K+ run in 2011 is done! Yay! Of course, it wasn't 13 miles like somebody ^^^^^^ but I'll take it. (Guess you'll have to go back to the last page to see who ran 13 miles.) Edited by serendipity 2011-01-08 5:08 PM |

I guess little wasn't the right word to use there... I have my first marathon in March (Shamrock, Va Beach) and I want to make sure that I am ready for that distance. The Shamrock 8k that they run the day before the marathon is what started my adventure into running and TRI's. I did that 8k in 56 minutes last year at 270lbs. I had troubles walking for a week... Now at 230lbs, I thought why not mark the 1 year mark with the marathon. Every weekend when I am done with my long run, I always wonder what I was thinking when I signed up. I was happy running 5k's and 10k's. They don't hurt as bad!! |

Veteran 149 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed an hour jog/walk in the 12 degree snow/icy roads around the neighbrhood. Other than the occasional slip on the ice it felt good. Knee still feeling good. Got a massage today and I believe it helped my run tonight. Any one had any experience with the massage stick? Supposed to be great for runners. |

Member 68 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed Sorry I haven't been around. This was a pretty bad cold but thankfully it's over. Got my swim in yesterday which felt great. Well, going to swim class was great, the actual swimming part wasn't so great. I'm having a hard time with the breathing aspect of swimming. The whole, "Take a breath, hold it, exhale and take another breath in" seems weird to me. I've been trying to keep track of my normal breathing patters and I always exhale right after taking a breath in, and then wait a bit before breathing in again. I'm going to try slowly exhaling as I'm going instead of holding it for a bit cause it's really not working for me. I've always been an under water swimmer. I never really swam, on top of the water. The only time I can really hold my breath is when I want to go for a long distance or go deep. I can actually do 25m without having to take a breath. Anyone else have any idea's on what else I can try? |

Watched the Biggest Loser I missed last Tues night. Good motivation to keep on that bike. Topped it off with some P90X ab ripper. Surely need more work on my core that is for sure. |

Anyone else have any idea's on what else I can try? For one thing, you shouldn't be holding your breath. As you rotate your body to breath, you should be exhaling. When your mouth comes level with the water you will be ready to inhale. I was told to pretend you are trying to hold a tennis ball on your shoulder with your chin, so then your mouth gets to water level you should inhale. Remember to rotate from the core and do not lift your head out of the water. To start you can breath to one side if that is easier. After you get that down you can work on bilateral breathing. Does this make sense? I can give you more ideas to help. |

Regular 119 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed Shawn, I was always told NOT to hold your breath while swimming, but to exhale slowly while doing your strokes. I take a breath, put my face back into the water, and exhale very slowly until the next time I take a breath. That could be 2 strokes (if I am tired) 3 strokes or 5 strokes (bi-lateral breathing or breathing out of both sides) or whatever breathing pattern works for you. The swim breathing can take a little while to get used to. Just keep at it and take it slow. |

Regular 119 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed Hope everyone had a great weekend. Nice, easy 2 mile run this morning. I am taking it slow, per my plan. This week I should get 3 x run, 4 x weights, 2 x swim and 1x trainer in for training. Lenny, I hope your neck feels better. |

Regular 152 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed Great job everyone! This is why I am here to get inspired by others for my first sprint in June. After a bunch of achilles discomfort a week or so ago I managed a walk and a swim (900 yds broken up) but it was hardly inspiring...lot's of non front crawl to just keep moving. It will come. I just can't figure out when swimming got so hard. Question: does anyone have a good group of stretches that they really like? I need to loosen my hips and hamstrings as I get ready to start riding bike for the first time in 10 years. |

I got them last year when I went to PT for a hamstring pull. |

Note: I'm sure that my swim coach might have mentionned this somewhere and I just didn't hear it or it could have been a topic that was discussed in October while I was away on vacation. |

Member 68 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed Well it feels good to be back into it full swing. Had a pretty busy day yesterday. Had some company over so I wasn't able to go for my regular long run but I was able to get a Crossfit training in and a bit later on in the afternoon I jumped on the ellipticle for 1h while I watch the 2002 Ironman World Championships. Got up early this morning and had another ellipticle session before work. Planning on hitting the threadmill after work tonight for a longish run, ~12k to 14k. The hard part will be deciding which movie to put on while I run. 2003 Ironman World Championships runs about 1h 20m, Seems about right in time. |

Regular 119 | Subject: RE: Lumber Dad's Mentor Group - Closed First "combined" workout this morning, swim followed by weights/core. I would not call it a BRICK. 1100 meters in the pool and lower body/core in the gym. Starting to get back into full swing of this training thing. Hope everyone is getting their miles/meters/time in this week. Lenny, how did the appointment go for you neck? Are you still able to rotate it? |

Used to do it in Chicago, and I would have the lakefront to myself... Keep it up! Lakefront is such a cool place to run. Couple summers ago we stayed downtown and I go to do my morning runs along the lake. Watch the swimmers out on the lake. Is it ever not windy along the lake in the winter? |
