Thanks Roger, I was planning on taking lunch today in about 3 hours, but after reading your post, you made me hungry and I might be leaving now. Yummm

I do have to say for the last 10+years I have taken part of the hoilday feast and trust me 5lbs is nothing to what I have done. But I have to say this year I have been really excited about training that I did cut back.. Ok it was not the training, it was my pants, If I gain just 1/2 pound then my pants would split and I would be forced to buy new clothes..

What's everyone doing for New Year's?

I'm the Wedding Coordinator at my church and we have an evening wedding to work ( I recruit Dave to come with me )on New Year's Eve then we're headed to dinner at a friends house. Just a few couples so it's nice and low key. The best part is they live a couple blocks away so we won't have to drive home with all the maniacs! New Year's day is a stay home and watch football day with a bike ride if the weather holds up. I got a new (and my first) road bike for Christmas and I want to get it out.

Early Happy New Year's to all!

Hi Steve.. thanks for saving my spot.  And hello to everyone else.

I'm Cathy, from eastern Ontario just a couple hours from Steve.  I joined his group last year but dropped out of it as I wasn't training.  2010 was a total write off for me.  I'm planning to have a much better year in 2011.

I started running in 1998, ran a bunch of races of all distances then in 2006 was the runner on a relay team at the local tri.  Decided if all the people I saw racing that day could do it then so could I.  Found BT around the same time and lurked for a while before joining.
As a non-swimmer the first thing I did was sign up for swimming lessons at the Y.  I surprised my self at how well I did and feeling uber confident I signed up (I think it was Dec.) for 6 tri's in the 2007 season including a HIM at the end!! I didn't even have a bike yet.  Bought my bike and trainer at the end of Feb and finished all my races my first season although I was a bit burned out by the end of it.
In 2008 my 'A' race was the Muskoka 70.3 which kicked my butt bad.
2009 my only race was a half marathon which resulted in a foot injury that I've been battling ever since.
2010 no races, barely trained at all.

So you can see I really need my MOJO back !!

I've been married 31 years, have 2 grown kids and 2 granddaughters that I spend a lot of time with.
We have a shitzhu but he can't run very far so isn't too helpful for training.
My other life challenge is my job.. I work 12 hour shifts 2days, 2 nights then 5 days off.  I struggle to get any kind of workout in on my work days.

2011 Goals:  I have a whole list of possible races on my log page but I will probably only do a few races.  'A' race will be the Ottawa half marathon in May with a goal of <2 hours.  My PR is 2:04 and my last half marthon time was 2:11 on pretty minimal training.  The outcome of this race with determine the rest of my season as most of the local stuff doesn't sell out.  I will do the K-town short course in Aug.  If I miss my 2 hour HM goal in May I'll probably do another one in the fall.

Weight loss:  I'd like to drop 15 - 20 lbs before then end of May and that will be my focus for the first couple months of the year.

I'd like to add that Steve is an awesome Mentor and you all picked a great leader when you joined his group.

bhc - 2010-12-30 8:52 AM Why do we over eat during the holidays.  Since last Thursday I've gained 5lbs even though I've kept up my training.  I can really tell it when running hills.  I do this to myself every year...Italian Cream Cake, pumpkin muffins, apple pie, the 5lb bag of pistacios that I got for Christmas only made it 6 days!!!   Why?!?!?!   Four more days of vacation!!!!   Going to eat with friends tonight and she is a great cook.

I think I need an intervention!!!!

Roger

I know exactly what you mean.  I live with my patrents and they are always bugging me about not eating enough at dinner.  I eat about 5 times a day but they only see the 1 meal and they dont understand why I dont eat a lot at any given meal and say that I am training for triathlon.

This is what I have penciled in for 2011 based on what interests me right now and seems doable. It is allot and will probably change. I bolded the two I am considering my "A" races; The Redman Half IM and The Kansas City Triathlon. This could change too. I picked the Hotter N Hell and Sherman rallies to train for that, I used to do the HH years ago so it will be nostalgic for me.
Seriously considering moving my marathon goal for 2012 or late in the year. My nagging leg injuries are starting to put a question mark on that. I would rather put it off than sacrifice much of the season with a re-injury. Thoughts?

We are heading over to some friends house to ring in the New Year! Every year we pick a different country's cuisine that I and another guy cook...been to Italy, China, Mexico and this year we are heading to India! Hopefully the chicken curry et al doesn't stick around too long on New Year's Day....although I sheduled a Rest Day

Have a great one all....40 minutes left at work and then I'm heading to the gym to squeeze in a workout!

Wow...I just spent 20mins trying to catch up with the posts! Chatty chillins' in here eh?

New Years... my husband hardly drinks, I don't anymore and we'll likely do take out or eat out with our 7 year old and maybe hit a movie... then at midnight the sky goes aflame right across from us in the local downtown marina - fireworks! Very spectacular and hard to sleep thru even if we tried.
New Year Day... I'm teaching the first spin class (there are 3) at the y at 8am. We'll get brunch then we'll watch the Rose Bowl and see Wisconsin beat TCU. I sort of watch as I take down the Christmas decos while hubby goes crazy. We wanted lobster for dinner but will have poor man's lobster with some cod instead Maybe I'll make some black eyed peas for luck.
Geepers...I sound old ... wasn't long ago when I was out all night long on New Years

For me, tomorrow, not much. We are not partyfolk, and starting tomorrow until Monday the "we" is just "me" as Lynn is heading off with a group from her canoe club on a weekend cross-country ski trek based out of a cabin somewhere near the Laurentians in Quebec. (Got all that?)

So, I will sit aroud and scramble to get caught up here, and keep abreast of my Shakespeare project, which is reading his palys until there aren't anymore left to read. I am now on my sixth ("Measure for Measure"), but it's been a couple of days since I was in it, due to Jane's mercy-run, and workouts.....and you fine humanoids. With Lynn gone and pools and gyms closed until Sunday, I should have lots of time to mosey around the house, readin' and writin'.

Tomorrow evening MAY be the Resolution Run 10km, if I feel favorably disposed to doing it despite not exavctly ready for my best performance. (I went over all of this in a post to Laura earlier today.) I'm paid, and have my swag, and my bib is a good karma number -- 4989. (I was born in '49, so I always like when that appears in some aspect of my life.) We'll see, though; if it's freezing rain I will chicken out just to eliminate the odds of injuring myself through too much slippin' and slidin'.

Slow and easy this weekend; slow and easy!

JEFF -

That's quite an ambitious schedule, but I'm not saying that in any negative way. You too are aware there's alot there, and in time you will get a handle on how much of it is doable. As for doing anything to risk a whole season, nonononono! You don't want to do that, believe me! I lost my '06 season to a torn meniscus and I was just generally miserable. For months on end.....miserable. I compensated my doing about six aquabikes, but they offered little solace as it made me even more miserable to watch everyone head off on the run, while I was packing up to head home. So, my choice is to schedule the possibly injurious events for late in the year, when the "collateral damage" is not so potentially devastating!

Your Jan 8 and 22 events sandwich nicely around my former abode, which was Allen! Say hi to it for me as you pass by, okay? I lived there from June '85 to July '87, during which time I worked at the Glenwood School (R.I.P., alas and woe ) in Richardson. Just so you know!

When Wisconsin was awarded the Rose Bowl spot it was felt to be a great move by the Rose Bowl organizers, according to the New York Times, who said that probably 3/4 of the Wisconsin would travel to the game. I guess you must be in the other 25%, eh?

I too am rooting for the Badgers. I kind of gotta like TCU because they are Horned Frogs, and wear purple, and play in Fort Worth which is a GREAT place......but as far as places go it can't quite edge out Madison, which for decades has suited me in any number of ways. GO BADGERS!!

It is allot but comes out to about 2 events a month which isn't that unusual for me.
The spring tris look like fun and a good way to get the year rolling before I settle into training for the two big ones (for me). The little 5ks and such are optional depending on my mood and condition etc. It is probably more in entry fees than I should spend anyway

1985-1987? You wouldn't recognize the place today...Allen has changed-Significantly when you consider I swim at the 24 hour fitness in Allen off McDermot, just down the road from the Allen Events Center where their semi pro hockey team plays etc etc...

My daughter, Jane, just told me the other day that wedding-related events are very popular on New Year's Eve in NYC, cuz it allows people to party without paying the exorbitant charges that NYC bars charge just to get in the door. Is that part of the thinking behind the event you are coordinating?

And congrats on the new bike!!!! Enjoy the ride on Saturday -- it;s California, for heaven's sake, and the weather will be more than fine enough to allow you to ride. I'm am SOOOOOO envious of you being able to do that!!

Hey everyone, did go and do a short workout... 30 min on the treadmill and 20 min in the pool... feel better.. less stir crazy anyway.  Man I swim slow... I can't seem to get the breathing rhythm down.  I am out of breath by the end of 50 yards, I guess I am not breathing often enough or maybe not exhaling enough -- it is very frustrating.

For New Year's just hanging out with my nephews so their parents can go out.

Hope everyone has a great New Year's Eve!

An intervention ha s been scheduked for you, and at some point in the next 18 hours you will be set upon by three burly yound men who will spirit you away to a safe heaven, free from culinary temptations. Interventions are just another service I provide in my role as a Full Service Mentor.

I worked quite hard at eating Responsibly last weekend, and it worked -- I gained barely a pound! This weekend, with Lynn gone, promises even grreater eating austerity, and I may actually lose a pound or two. I am very pleased to enter the New Year at 17-0-172, which is a few pounds less than last year at this time. Although, as I type here I am eating a strawberry-and-creme scone, from my favorite sin-food shop, Life of pie, in Ottawa. Ten minutes ago I had a slice (or was it two? ) of key lime pie, also from there.

And you should feel quite good about the pistachios, as they are a fine source of protein. Your run-recovery days will be enhanced by all those pistachios; well done!

OMG, you're right! 24-hour fitness center.......an Allen Events Center.......a semi-pro hockey team?????? We were last there in summer of '00, i think, and the only demonstrable change I saw was in the decrepitude of my former street, Cumberland. It was "modest" in the mid-80s, but 13 or so years later it had taken a few turns for the worse. Alas.

Son Peter was born in Plano in Dec. '86, so of course he had no memory of anything Texan. Getting there in '00 was his first glimpse, and I have to say that he was not all that impressed with either Allen or Plano. However, he has always been a huge fan of the Stars, so at least there is that!
