Subject: RE: The Sickies/Injured/Recovering Thread

I would love to join the pity party in being anonymous comes honesty. In 16 years
I have had 180 kidney stones 35 surgeries and in the past month I have had
another 12 kidney stones and 5 surgeries. I found out this year that my genetic
condition that causes this cannot be fixed because there are two known people
who have this condition my son and myself and there is no money to come up with
a cure unless I can raise a million dollars. We also found out that a
transplant will not work since the genetic nature of the disease will attack
the new kidney. I feel bad for me but I feel worse for my son who is Autistic
and has this condition. He is 10 and has had three kidney stones already. The
pain that he will have to suffer throughout his life cannot be quantified. This
disease will claim my life early and I am ok with that, but I am not ok with
watching my son suffer. My father died at 60 from this disease and I am
beginning to understand what it must had been like for him to see me develop my
first kidney stones. I signed up for IM Lake Placid to raise money for the
cure, but the more I train the more my disease takes control of my life and
takes away my ability to train. I have given up on that dream to prove to my
son that this disease cannot take our ability to do something great. The truth
is that sometimes medical conditions take away our dreams and the people that
we love. I look forward to raising money for a cure for my son. Thanks for the
opportunity to be inspired by the people on this web site.

JBIRISH...I am so very sorry to hear you have this kidney condition and that your son also has it. What is the name of this condition? I know there is nothing I can say to make you feel better!but I am sure glad that you are out there using you body the best that you can and bringing awareness to others regarding this rare kidney condition. I am a believer that through eduation maybe one day someone will be motivated and able to find a cure. I hope you can continue to use your body to accomplish your dreams.stay strong! sending you and your son positive thoughts and prayers.Alicia

x2. Sometimes, reality really does bite and I can't imagine watching it happen to a child.

Life isn't always what we want and sometimes we have to change our dreams, but we can have them nevertheless. Are you able to train, or lightly for short distances?

I'm also curious about what the name or specifics of the disorder. I know a little bit about calcium stone kidney diseases, mainly primary hyperoxaluria and Dent's, but your family's sounds even rarer than that.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having a self-induced pity party. But really, I guess I've got it easy. Been sidelined because of severe hamstring tendinosis. I am positive (or is it naive) that I will be competing in 2012 and hoping for close to my same level (shorter races will = less training=less stress on my body). Going in this AM to have a plantar's wart removed, so now I won't even be able to swim with a buoy for a week.

First day of not working out was miserable, to make matters worse, I couldn't stop eating those darn christmas cookies! Feeling better now though. Getting some much needed clearning and organization done.

Does anyone feel like they have a image to uphold? That's my hardest part when people talk to me about my crazy workouts/schedule--and now I am NOT doing it!

Alright...time to join.  I've been sidelined by two knee injuries more-or-less since June and three weeks ago I sprained/strained/tore my SI joint.  I can't train at all and I'm driving my family crazy!  Smile

I've kept my sanity my living vicariously through my mentor group, which really helped.

Here's hoping 2012 is healthier for all of us. I posted some pics of my knee from the surgery on my blog. Shows the big chunk of cartilage missing from my knee.  Happy New Year!

Yikes!

Indeed. Many hopes and prayers for all of us. I'm doing okay, *almost* managed a (very minimalist) Iron training week, insanely tired. Getting into Iron training makes one very tired anyway, and I'm also taking a lot of naps during the day.

But considering that last week was my first week up and about doing anything at all (never mind training) ... I'm over the moon.

Hope everyone has a great (injury free) New Year!!!

Lets all recover and get back on track.

For myself, I'm getting back on track. Tonight is going to be a pain in the a$$ ! I'm a chef at a major casino and I'll be puting in a minimum of 14-16 hours today. Kind of makes getting up tomorrow and getting in my 20+ mile bike ride a tough decision, but I WILL get it in.

I'm now in PT 4x a week and getting better everyday. I'm hoping to get clearance by the ortho. on the 10th and can get back to running soon. May only be pool running at first, but anything is better than not running at all.

Day By Day everyone!

I guess I should jump in on this one.  I had surgery on Dec 1 to remove a heel spur.  I guess I thought recovery would be a bit faster than it has been and I'm getting pretty sick of hopping around.  I am gently working on losing the crutches this week, but it's not fast enough.  The plan was/is to be able to start jogging on it by Feb 1.  That seems like a pretty big stretch considering I can barely walk without a crutch.  Pity party!  Anyway, I officially on the recovery route, although in the slow lane.

Happy New Year to all my fellow injured people!  I haven't been posting lately since this winter break has been quite crazy, but here's a quick update:

I had my patellar debridement surgery on 12/20.  The good news is that the doctor didn't think he needed to (essentially) staple my tendon back to my kneecap, so he only shaved down the tendon, drilled a couple holes in the kneecap to let it bleed through to promote healing, and closed me up.  This should make the healing process much easier.  Anyway, I was on crutches for 8 days, and now I'm weight-bearing, but I still have to wear my full leg brace, locked straight, for another couple weeks.  I start PT on Thursday, but I can only work on range of motion for a while.

I'm feeling optimistic about recovery because my knee really has been feeling pretty good lately, but I'm still frustrated by my limited motion.  This brace is awful, and I've had a hard time sleeping in it.  Plus, I had to do all of our holiday traveling in it, which was extremely uncomfortable.  BUT I'm confident that I'll end up better off after the months of PT ahead.  Staying positive!

I hope everyone else is healing up, too.  I hate hearing about any of us athletes being out of it for any reason!

Can I join the pity party?  Came down with a bad case of gastric flu on New Year's eve which is only now managing to get a bit better.  Doc says no training for the rest of the week ... and it's making me slightly batty already!!  Help! (at least I caught up on some sleep!!)

{{{MELON PRESS}}} Alicia ... so happy you're able to stay moving. I don't know about chemo and rad, but I'm probably also the only person who gained weight through bouts of dengue and typhoid fever and similar illnesses. Actually, I was more yo-yo but it was a net gain, until this very last bout, which really did me in.

So that's just a very convoluted way of saying ... it's possible!

I had my MRI today to figure out just what I tore in my left calf and how bad. I have been stuck on the couch and on crutches for 2 weeks with my leg in a walking boot. I still can't put ant weight on my leg. Hopefully when I see the orthopedic surgeon next week I will get a plan to get this healed. I figure it has to get better at some point, right now it is just taking its own sweet time.

I'm so very sorry to hear that. After your other thread, I was hoping it really was "just" a calf heart attack or something easier to recover from. Best of luck in your recovery and keep posting.

Is it bad that while swimming the cramp you get in your calf actually feels better than the pain you feel with every step or kick you take in your foot and ankle? Yes, the cramp pain was a relief from my ankle/foot pain.

Kind of in the same boat. With my back issues, I can't wait to get on the bike and feel the burn in my quads hitting hills. It's a good pain! Not that nagging constant pain. I'll take the pain of training anyday!

I just got my bloodwork back from my rheumatologist, 20 different tests on top of the other tests I have already taken. I hate hearing the works "your fine", all tests are negative. I took Avelox last year and ever since I am physically a mess, but I feel like I am SLOWLY getting back on track.

I haven't worked out in months, heck the other day I picked up an empty Nalgene bottle and my shoulder made three huge cracking noises, it was disgusting... and then ached for days. My psoas has been killing me for a while and acupuncture has been helping... but any walking (forget biking or working out!) bothers it. My knees and other joints click and make noises. Not to mention anything I eat that isn't organic/natural makes me get itchy and tingly. And anything that I do on a normal basis like typing or using the mouse, starts to bother me in no time. I tried to play foosball with my family and my forearm ached for a week.

At this point i'm trying to find a doctor that has a clue about fluoroquinolone toxicity, and also a good sports therapist. Someone that can help heal all of these injuries, or some of them at least! Its going to be a very expensive year.

I know how frustrating and mind-bogglingly costly the medical mill can be. I really hope you find good practitioners, and soon. You might try posting in the CT forum (did you already?) ... you never know.

Yeah, I posted in the CT forum hoping someone can suggest someone good. We have a $3600 deductible that we have to pay up front until our health insurance starts paying anything. Then they pay 80%. When we pay out $9,000 then they cover 100%. So I have been waiting until the new year to start all of these tests and therapy, no sense in spending this money before January to have it reset to zero... this way we can hopefully get other things done this year.

Good luck with everything!  This sounds awful, so I sincerely hope you can get it figured out very soon.  I understand the expenses, but it'll be worth it once you know what's wrong and can fix it.  Keep us posted!

Thanks Erica, what i mentioned is only some of the current issues. I have suffered muscle spasms, muscle twitching, rashes, feelings of spiders under my skin, all sorts of joint pains and aches... ever since i took these antibiotics, all for a sinus infection! I never will take this again, or Cipro or Levquin for that matter.

Good news, I jogged 0.3 miles on the treadmill today @ 5.5 mph !! Whoo hoo!!! Did a little core/strength training and foam rolling to warm up first, hopefully I can keep this up without too much pain.
