Moonrocket - 2012-01-17 4:33 PM Oh I struggled today to convince myself to go running. I feel better afterwards of course. How do you motivate yourself to run? It's the event I struggle the most with!If I'm running tight on cool down I just douse myself with really cold water in the shower. It definitely helps.

Running is my weakest sport. I have started to enjoy it, though. I spent some time doing a couple 5k's and a couple half marathons. Focusing on just running really helped me break into the sport. It also made me much better. As a flat-footed asthmatic, I struggled to break 10 min/mile, even when I was 20 lbs lighter. After focusing on the run and doing speed work for a short time, I am feeling better and running faster than I ever have. It may just take time. I have also put more emphasis on stretching before and after the run. (ie. I will jog/run for 10 min and then spend 20 min stretching and then get into the main set of my run.)

Also, using a training plan forced me to do it even when I didn't want to. Left to my own, I would not have run much at all. Keep up the good work!!

Motivation can be difficult sometimes.  I had quite a bit of trouble training for my second ironman because I just wasn't motivated to get out and do the long stuff.  In addition to having a training plan to be accountable to, just having that goal race in mind was a big help.  Knowing how much more that race was going to hurt if I didn't get my butt out the door got me to do many workouts I just wasn't wanting to do.

Also the BT community was a big help.  I have regular friends on the site that like to call me out when I'm slacking.  That's usually something I like to avoid.

So now you've got a whole group of people willing to come to harass you if you don't get out and run

Running is my weakest as well. I go through phases where I like it more than other times. I agree with Sean though, having a training plan helps you to get the runs done. It does get easier! I find I get into a bit of a OCD cycle where I have difficulty not getting my workouts done!

Ended up getting a run and a swim done today. My run *should* have been longer but I got stuck in my jacket this morning and it took me like 10min to get out (one of the ties got stuck in the zipper and the zipper wouldn't undo...ya...10min...I know). I had to get to a meeting with a patient's probation officer so I didn't have time to finish it all!

Fail zipper. Fail.

Hey group!  I hope everyone's doing well.  I will try to catch up on the posts in a bit.

Workouts have been going well.  It feels good to be back in a regular workout schedule.  Sunday I lifted, Monday I went to yoga, but today I missed my workout (was going to lift again).  I had a meeting at 7pm and was planning on lifting beforehand, but was super busy at work and didn't leave there until 6:30.  Barely even had time to get to my meeting and scarf down a sandwich on my way there!

In any case, looking back on my log, I haven't a had a day off of working out in about 2 weeks anyways, so I was probably due for a rest day.

The weather's been weird around here.  It was raining in the morning, then snowing in the afternoon (but not very much).   I'm hoping it snows more here, otherwise I'll probably head north (to Wisconsin) for some more xc ski training this weekend!

I just wanted everyone to know I have been monitoring the group keeping up with posts etc. Looks like everyone is working hard/ keep it up, not been posting because i have not been doing much Just started a new group of recruits so I will be running soon whether I want too or not/ doing a little crossfit (Insanity) work outs 4 days a week and some short runs and hope to be able to afford the gym again soon so I can start swimming again, but as I started last year I am again searching for motivation.

That is soo AWESOME!  Congrats on your marathon finish and beating your goal!

I went running in 62 degree sun today.  Figured if I booted it out today I would be done with my least favorite for the week.  I even added 5 minutes to what I'd been doing.

Ha... I was going to run with a friend today.  But it was 8 degrees out, so we decided we best stay indoors Surprised

I would say I'm jealous of your 62 sunny weather, except that we'd been spoiled with unseasonably warm-for-January-in-Chicago weather (40-60 degrees) up until last week when winter decided to show up, so I can't really complain!  I just haven't acclimated to the cold yet!

Workouts went pretty well today.  Instead of running in 8-degree weather, I opted for yoga and lifting.  My left hip flexor and right hamstring were WAAAY tight today, and definitely affected both workouts.  I did ask the yoga instructor to focus on hips, so she did her best.  But definitely felt the imbalances when lifting!  I'm going to have to get re-acquainted with my foam roller!

We're expecting more snow tomorrow, so I'm hoping to head up to Kettle Morraine in Wisconsin for more cross country skiing.  I have a sneaking suspicion that last week's trip is responsible for my hip/hamstring issues, so I'm going to have to be careful when I go.  And also, I'll bring my muscle stick for the car ride Wink

I have a really cheesy question for the ladies.  What do you do with your hair in the transitions?  Do you put it in a pony tail after you take your cap off?

Random thought of the day...

Thanks!

I have mine in a pony tail before I put my cap on. I make sure that the tie is low enough at the back of my neck so it doesn't interfere with my helmet. Then I usually wear a hat or a headband while I am running to control whatever is loose or I retie it once I've started to run. Honestly haven't really ever had a problem. Normally look terrible when I'm racing...but what are you going to do? Haha.

Interesting- I never even thought about putting it in a pony tail before swimming.  I've never tried that.

So, can I expand this and ask for general transition tips?  How do you set up your gear?  What do you bring?  What's your transition plan etc.  Do you really practice it and where do you do it?

Thanks!
