Not a good week, pool was closed, also lacked some motivation.

Bike: 0

Swim: 0

Run: 16 mi. -  2hr. 21m.

Does anyone know anything about the "Kinetic Rock and Roll" Trainer?  I'm looking at getting a bike trainer, don't want to spend over $500, appreciate any advice.

First time back in the pool this morning in about 10 days. It felt really slow, and I wanted to quit about 10 times, but I still managed to get in the distance. Now I am at work and about to fall asleep at my desk.

Plan is to do a run tonight and brick workout tomorrow morning. Feels really good to be back "on" this week after not doing nearly enough last week.

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Pool closed again this week, it's been pretty cold for a couple weeks.  Looking forward to it opening again so I can get back to swimming, it is definitely my weak link.

Anyone out there doing "Cross-fit" or "P-90X"?  Any thoughts if it helps with training?

Welcome back from my Hiatus (spelling?) from training.  I have news:

1.  I have been diagnosed with Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee).  Short version is I have hyper mobile patellas and a muscular imbalance in my lower legs.
- My Hamstrings and calves are exceptionally weak (could not do 3x20 two legged calf raises!)
- My physio guy was a competative Duathlete, and recently qualified to run the Boston Marathon, he has run under 3 hr Full Marathons

2.  I am now the heaviest I have been in a number of years (210 lbs) due to lack of sleep, taking time off due to injury & pain and inconsistent diet.

3.  I am not backing down from my goal, but I might have to choose a different path on how to make it to the - 28 July 2013 Calgary 70.3 triathlon -

Any thoughts or useful advice on how to progress from here on points 1 & 3, since 2 is about finding the correct train/work/life balance.

Hey Chris, sorry to hear about the that!  Kudo's on not giving up on your goal!!!  I know nothing about it but after a quick google search looks like its treatable with some physical therapy.    Hang in there, you will get through this!

Speaking of knees....I'm taking my bike workouts much more seriously and going much harder and am staring to feel something in my right need.  Not during the training session but the next day.  Its really weird, I feel it in my right knee only when descending stairs.  No other activity triggers the pain.  I've started icing after workouts and will hope for the best.

I love P90X.  I did 60 days in the offseason a couple years back and had a great experience.  I recently bought the sequel P90X2 which I like even more.  I don't follow the program but randomly through in a DVD once in a while to mix up the monotony of swim/bike/run.  Awesome workouts.  I highly recommend it.

Having a pretty good week so far.  Keeping up with Bike & Swim plan though a little behind on the run.  Long stuff coming up tomorrow and Sunday.    Have a great weekend everyone!

Sounds like you might have some tight ITB Steve. There is nothing worse than going down the stairs after a really long run. I am almost always sore.

Training is going pretty well this week. I have a run tonight and then long bike and run this weekend.

I have not tried P90X or Crossfit, but will likely do Crossfit once I am done with this triathlon training season. I have only heard good things, but for now it's too tough to fit it into an already demanding training scehdule.

Hope everyone is having a good week!

I am so happy to finally be able to post something here.

After three weeks of very sporadic training after work, I bit the bullet and set the alarm to 5:45AM. I am an owl and have never been able to do this before. I guess I am desperate enough at the moment.

I had a very consistent week. I get up and head to the basement. The quantity is there, but the quality leaves much to be desired. I still do not feel quite alive at 6AM. If anybody has any pointers on how to increase efficiency of morning workouts, please let me know Smile

My totals for the week

Bike:2h 05m  - 27 Mi
Run:3h 13m 20s  - 18.1 Mi
Strength:1h 00m

I am so happy to finally be able to post something here.

Good job and welcome back!  Keep it up.  I think if you just keep up the early rises it will become 2nd nature.  I find that I have to plan on what I'll be watching as much as planning the workout.  There is nothing good on at 0 dark hundred so having the right Netflix movie or show in the queue is key.

Even though I missed a key hill-repeats run workout I really needed I'm still pretty happy with this week. Increased the bike and swim volume.  This morning's brick could have been much longer/better too.  I cut it short because I knew the family wanted to go out to breakfast.  I come out of the basement @ 9:30 and everyone is still asleep.  Oh well.

My summary:  (will try to get another 5 mile run in later)

Well I haven't posted in a while and I've been particularly stressed out at work.  I haven't been getting the sleep I need and it's been too easy to make excuses to not do my full workouts and maintain my strict eating regimen.  My numbers from the last week are not necessarily great but I did get in a short brick run today (run was with my dog that never goes running - so that may help to get me out there more since he's starting to put on pounds.) Pool should be open so I've got plans to hit the stationary bike for a bit after work tomorrow before a meeting and then the pool on Tuesday and Friday.  Hopefully no more excuses tomorrow.

Looks like I'm getting back in the swing of things.  2 solid work outs plus my bike workout from last night.  Missed my swim today (had to accommodate wife's need for a hair cut) but I'm scheduling my workouts better.  Championship series in my hockey league.

Cool!  Championship series, thats awesome.   Playing some ice hockey is on my bucket list.  I can skate well but not sure how or when I can ever get that done.  Will tackle that after I get into Kona LMAO, yeah right.

Had a good brick yesterday, 1.5 hour intense bike on the CT + 4 mile run.  Couldn't tell it was intense by the avg mph, but the  massive puddle on the mat under me gave it away.   Had a long swim planned for today but got to the pool a bit late and was thrown out after an hour by the aquafit club.  These people have no manors what so ever. Their class starts at 9 but they start taking the lanes downs at 8:40 and are hanging out all over the pool.  They see me doing laps, is it that hard to keep the far lane clear for 20 minutes???

That is so annoying when they start doing that! I got in a quick brick this morning and a run tonight. Hope everyone is having a good week.

Good luck in the hockey championships Schwartzie. I used to play a ton of hockey, but just gave it up this year to concentrate on Ironman.

I do Tri sports to be in better shape FOR hockey (and work) so I don't ever see me hanging up the skates.

This past week was brutal sick (illness) for me, so much so I was getting dizzy walking down the halways of the apartment ... so not much training.  Since then I've logged 2 physio routine workouts which are strength training for the legs.

Here's to this week being better.

Last swim before Sunday's race.  1 mile in 33:03  (1:53/100 avg pace).  Next body of water that I'm jumping into will be the frigid San Francisco bay.

So this week wasn't terribly big for me with Tri training, however I've been making it to the gym regularly in order to complete my physio exersises.  Sleep has also been better this week and nutrition has been more consistent.

Bonus, the crappy stress causing room mate has left and now I get to move back into my own apartment.  Well for 1 month as I'm moving at the end of March.

Sounds like most everyone is working good.  Steve, good luck with your race.  My race schedule has been messed up.  I missed my 2/24 race because of a lack of training and allowing work to fall in the way, then my 3/30 race is going missed because of work again.

I've made it back into the pool last week.  I've gotten in 3 swims so far and due for 4 on Friday. Today was my first true rest day in over a week, but my diet has not been 100% so my weight loss has stalled.

I'm hoping to get back on the wagon dietwise, soon.

Sorry folks, been off the grid for a bit.  Getting to San Fran... racing... now in Seattle on business.

I'll write up a full race report on my flight home but here is the short version.....the race kicked my !!!

The swim from Alcatraz to SanFran was simply brutal.  It took me 20 minutes to come out of shock of being in a 51* ocean before I was able to start making real forward progress. Crazy chop and intense current made is really hard. By then I was swept a bit off course and ended up landing about 600 yards past the swim exit adding more running to my swim time that ended up being a horrible 1:10 for a 1.5 mile swim.  It only got worse when the bike started into a really bad head wind for the first 2 miles and then the climbing began.  1,700 ft worth of climbing in only 18 miles.  Had my slowest avg MPH ever of only 12.  Partially because my feet were fully frozen and stayed frozen until half way through the run.  I was proud though that I never got off the bike like dozens of others did on some of the climbs.  The 8 mile run was more equivalent to steep hiking trails including about a mile stretch of beach running and several hundreds steps.  Another record low race pace here.

This was a nice novelty, destination, bucket list race.  Not sure I ever want to come back to get a real time vs. the 4:33 yesterday.  It was brutal but I have to say was a lot of fun.  Swimming on my back and seeing Alcatraz and the Gold Gate Bridge was awesome.  Spending the following day in Napa Valley recuperating great.

Hope everyone is sticking to their plans!!
