Okay Dave,  So what I hear you saying is that you want me to ride around in a bike with a basket, fenders and a little dog named toto while wearing a pointed hat just because the bike fits?  What are you really trying to say about me? This sounds like a bet between you and Matt to see what you can get the new guy to do.

Two out of the three bike shops I have looked at have professional fittings.  One charges $35 and gives the bike models that fit whether they sell them or not.  The other one is free as a way to attract new customers.  They give you a list of specialized and cannondale bikes that will fit you as that is what they sell.  There are two used bike shops in town but the inventory is either the $250 1970s bike fender and basket included or $1000 for a super fancy road bike.  Right now neither has anything in between except for fixed gear bikes.  Craig's list has several tri bikes but few road bikes near my size since I should take between 55-57 inch.  The ones that are near that size are more expensive than the new ones.  I already planned on the fitting and have an appt set for Thursday.  That still brings me back to the beginning.

We absolutely did have that bet!  ha!    actually sorry :-(    I goofed.  I forgot you are going the road bike route.  ugh  brain fart.     A road bike is  MUCH easier to size up.

There is nothing wrong with ending up with a road bike and a tri bike.

Do you think if the witch got a bike fitting, she could have had a better position on the bike?

Forget fit.. lose that hat and her aerodynamics would improve dramatically.

I should get a basket like the one she has on the back - it's smaller than my "special needs" pouch. That would probably hold enough gel for me to make it through a sprint distance!

So I finally got back into the pool after about forever.  Yesterday went exactly according to plan - just not mine.  I got home late on a crowded train and there was a minor crisis at home - nothing bad, just a little more than the usual day to day drama.

And then today when I get to the gym - its aqua-fit time.  That delayed the swim for a half hour while I was on the treadmill while watching for the pool to empty.  And then - 700 yards and I'm exhausted.

LOL  You guys make me laugh. A tri suit would help more than the hat.  Her dress is like a sail.

Road bike news...I actually got a call back from the fitting place saying they overbooked so my new appt is for Monday.  However I got another call back from one of the used bike places in town.  He has a bike that may be a sweet deal for me.  It's not in inventory yet because they are refurbishing it.  It is an older specialized with an 8 speed shifter (allez pro).  According to him it has Ultegra quality components and he is going to sell it for $600.  I'm going to check it out on Thursday.  It is supposed to be a 2006 model which sold for over $2000 new.  We will see.  The shop makes everything on the bike new and gives a great guarantee so there is hope. I'll keep you guys posted as I know you are holding your breath.

Sounds like a great deal!   Hope this works out for you.   Did you ask them about installing fenders and a basket? maybe they will throw it in on the deal.    Or hey a kickstand!

Ever see the movie "American Flyers"?  (Kevin Costner in like his first movie)     They ride red Specialized Allez      I remember when the movie came out, I thought those were the coolest bikes ever.      It's s super corny movie, but it's a total classic that you will treasure.

Ok curious  who has seen it and who has not?

My logs are "friends only"  like Matt's      Primarily cause I don't want to give out too much info like where the BT Fantasy league #2  Massive Trophy lives.  God forbid someone steals it from me.     Course the first place I would look for it if I came home to find it missing is at Matt's house.  :-

in any case I added everyone from the last roster post.    feel free to call me friend on yours.  or... don't!    for now test the water,  see if you like me first.  It's only prudent.

Otherwise "Come on in,  the water's warm...."

BT Fantasy league #2 Massive Trophy LOL~ really?

I thought you won like $100 bucks and a case of Old Style for that.

well ya there's that and  here is the trophy!

Max,

I think you're leaving way too much rest in between intervals.  You're only swimming 50 meters at a time, you don't need 40 seconds in between.  Here's what I think you need to do.  Everyone else for that matter, too.

Get in the water and do time trials.  I want to see 500, 1000, and 1500 meter (or yards if that's your pool) time trials.  We can then calculate your t-pace and give you the right intervals.  Don't worry about whether the TT's are good or bad, we need to establish a benchmark for everyone.

Hi Matt

Thanks for replying. What are time trials ? Just get in the pool and cover 500/1000/1500 meters as fast as possible ? Rest in between allowed ? What consititues a good/bad time trial ?

Thanks

Max

Max, yes, a time trial is just that.  It's a way to set a benchmark for yourself.  If you want to warm up, go ahead.  The idea is to gauge your fitness at any given point in time.  Take the distance and cover it in as little time as possible.  If you need a break, take one.  Make sure to not stop the clock when you do so.  You're gauging your own fitness level and stroke technique.

Good/bad/ugly times?  No such thing for this.  Just be honest with yourself and record your honest time.  You'll appreciate it later.

Hope you get to feeling better.

Awesome.  So I just started reading up on T-Pace (your benchmark pace) and there's some discussion as to whether you should do three time trials to get a more accurate picture.  As you are well aware, your performance can change on a day-to-day basis.  Given that you guys are new to swimming, I'm going to assume that you're content with basing your T-pace off these single time trials.

http://www.active.com/triathlon/Articles/Set-a-Training-Benchmark-with-a-Swim-Time-Trial

This article is worth a read nonetheless.

Jeremy, this is really impressive!  You maintained the same pace through 3 different distances.  Were you saving yourself on the 500 and 1000?  How much time did you take in between sets?

Hey,

Here are my time trials. I did these after I rode the bike for 44 min. I'm a bit confused by looking at a few of the previous post. Was I just suppose to add on a 500 to the previous 500?? I took it that I was to swim a 500, then swim a complete 1000, then swim a complete 1500. I was just able to do the 500 and 1000, someone would've had to pull me off the bottom of the pool had I attempted the 1500 the way I was feeling. But I will do the 1500. Below are my times:

500 yd - 11:46

1000 yd - 26:00 (i.e 10x100)

So where do I go from here?!

Thanks!!

Thanks.. its nice to hear from someone who knows how to swim that im doing something right Smile

It's a continuous swim, i try and get 40 minutes in 3 times a week at lunch, i was kinda surprised when they came out even on the 500 and 1500 too, I just smacked the lap timer on my watch as i hit each distance.  I definitely felt myself kicking more towards the end of the set.  All in all I got in 1800yds in 37 minutes today just about.  I started swimming a few months back, and this is the program i followed for endurance (http://ruthkazez.com/ZeroTo1mile.html)

I still have trouble with bilateral breathing and generally do a good imitation of drowning if i try a flip turn unfortunately, but at least it gives the receptionist at the gym a good laugh when i do try them

Matt,

Here are my time trials from when I did those distances last month.
500 m - 14:48
1000 m - 32:42
1500 m - 52:30

These were all done on seperate sessions.

OK, so let me break down for each of you what your T-Paces are.  This is really pretty simple.  Don't sweat that the times might be bad.  If you stick to this group for 3 months you will get better.

Max:

500m TT : 14min49s

1000m TT : 31min17s (continued from 500m)

So your T-Pace on the 500m (I like that you use meters- my health club in Chicago is meters too...) is 2:53/ 100 meters

Your T-Pace for the 1000m is 3:09.

These will be your benchmark for measuring your progress going forward.  So if I give you a workout where I say "go T-Pace plus 5 seconds" you'll want to aim for 2:58 per 100 meters.  Does that make sense?

So Jeremy, yours are:

500yd-10.07

1000yd-20.11

1500yd - 30.21

You're basically a 2 minute T-pace period, regardless of the distance.  Your workouts will be easy to calculate

Jus_Me - 2013-01-16 4:52 PM Hey, Here are my time trials. Below are my times: 500 yd - 11:46 1000 yd - 26:00 (i.e 10x100) So where do I go from here?! Thanks!!

So Me~

Your t-pace on the 500 is 2:20- 2:21

Your 1000 t-pace is going to be 2:30-2:40

Could you have swum the 1000 straight without stopping?
