I worked for many years as food service director in the medical field working closely with patients and the teams of dietitians. For a few years I was in the geriatric field. After dealing with several patients who were literally starving to death while being fed thousands of calories because they had entered into Ketosis and could no longer absorb any nutrition, I decided I would never walk down that road.

Granted these were patients who had multiple issues but after learning from the dietitians that only a small metabolic change while in Ketosis could change the levels and cause starvation. Scary stuff.

I am not an expert, just an observer and to each their own is my philosophy.

The following is a series of videos from the Merritt Wellness centre. I am not trying to promote the centre, but if you're like me you might have a hard time explaining to your friends and loved ones what low carbs is all about.

Those videos are the most clear and simple explanation of the problems caused by carbs addiction I have seen on the net so far. You won't find anything new you don't already know, if you've researched ketosis and low carbs.

Just a useful tool as we spread the message.

It appears that you are equating ketosis with ketoacidosis. They are not the same thing. The latter is dangerous and potentially deadly. I belive you are referring that condition in your hospital experience. One of many resources on the difference between the wo can be found here, http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/ketoacidosis.html

Well folks, I'm out of ketosis for a few days nminimum. I'm celebrating Easter full-bore, the day began with pancakes after 6am church and it's been a carb parade ever since. Hallelujah and pass the ammunition.

Claaw:  Me too!!!!  OMG that is too funny.  Your breakfast sounds divine. How long will it take to recover?

I have supplemented my otherwise excellent diet with an array of jelly beans, malted milk eggs (which I love, kids hate, and for some reason the EB brings yearly), and Resse's PB cups.  Crud.  But, I did run twelve miles this morning, swam 1.5 miles yesterday and spun for 2.25 hours.  Still, I fear I have ruined the keto adaption I worked so hard to get to.  I have been losing about a pound a week.  Scared to see what the scale will say tomorrow.  I suppose I could fast the rest of the day?  Not sure that would help.  Thoughts?

A few people at work have expressed casual interest in the low carb diet I have adopted since January.  I have sent a few links to them but am not certain they are ready to dive in.  I feel like once one is reasonably educated about sugar, carbs, ketosis, etc. it's hard to ignore and continue with the American diet.  It's like being given the key to life in a way.

Gotta put the life into living sometimes. Tomorrow the kids and I sleep in anyway. My wife is the only one with a normal Monday.

I'm in the same boat guys...why do the carbs never taste as good as you imagine??  I'm ready to get back to feeling better by eating my usual clean keto food tomorrow and hitting the gym :D

I celebrated too, but since i don't eat sugar, it was easy to resist chocolate. The last two evenings While visiting family and friends I ate to the point of bursting, but since I was not eating chocolate, I figured might as well ignore the carbs. Used vegetables to scoop up huge amount of seven layers dip, two, three plates of all the available meats and fat, I really don't remember the last time I ate that much.

Tried the scale when I got home to see the damage, and lost a pound. I must say, it's a first for Easter.

It has taken four days to lose the two pounds I saddled my body with on sunday! Hard to believe that carbs have that dramatic of an effect.

The hardest part for me is eliminating sugary salad dressing and barbecue sauce. The only sugar free thing I could find was Walden Farms. I had to drive a half hour to a Podunk town market. I just got the French and at first it smelled and tasted strange, but by the end of the salad I got used to it.

Anybody else try this stuff, specifically the barbecue sauce? Any other brands I could look into?

Make your own! There's good recipes out there. No added junk.

Walden farms is the only product I'm aware of but remember, its not really 0 calories.  Technically, its under a calorie so they can list it as none but in reality, its about .5 or more calories...and possibly that much in carbs as well.  Its a good alternative to use but if you are using true keto, you can use blue cheese, ceasar or other creamy salad dressings.  I've found dressings that have 0 sugars...just measure out a serving so you don't kill your caloric intake.  I haven't found any BBQ sauce at my supermarket that works beside Walden Farms.

It's ok I guess (kinda got to get over that odd after taste)....I've come to enjoy grilling with spice rubs a lot more to be honest.

Cooked a dozen hamburgers for my oldest daughter's 21st birthday tonight. They all had barbecue sauce on them except for mine. Once I covered it with mayonnaise, guacamole, cheese, fried onions and mushrooms, I did not really miss the barbecue sauce :-)

Just how bad is sugar, anyway? I hate cooking, but if I want to COMPLETELY cut out sugar it would seem I have to make EVERYTHING from scratch. I would estimate I'm still getting about 5 g of sugar, and 15-25 g elsewhere like lettuce.. How much will this hurt my ketosis? Is zero carbs better?

My research and experience has shown that 50g of carbs is the magic number to stay under.  I've also been reading that you can stick with berries if you want fruit because of their lower GI number.  I've also read about people doing keto but actually have sugary items post workout to spike their insulin levels back up.  I don't know what you want to have that's sugary...so I'm trying to cover all basis here.  I think most people here would tell you to stay away from sugars the best you can; you will end up with trace sugars in items but there's no reason to be trying to figure out how to get a candy bar into your diet and stay in ketosis. (or BBQ sauce as you mentioned)

Hey, people!

So I seriously had a bad food weekend. Ate carbs and crap. It was a birthday weekend. I chose to eat old school and boy did I pay for it!! Felt awful Sunday night. So bloated and achy.

Today is day three of water/light tea fast. Plan to eat tomorrow. What do people suggest as light foods to break a fast? Need to get back to clean eating.

Never again. This weekend and the after effect must be what it's like to be a drug addict who falls back into drug use.

Now I feel like I am back to square one cleaning out my body and trying to get back to ketosis. Ugh!

Has anyone else totally crash landed weeks of healthy eating? What was your recovery plan? How long did it take?

Carbs are a powerful addiction. Even though I pay for it, I do go crazy once in a while.

Usually takes me 6 days to feel normal again. Carbs cravings are the worse as well as lack of energy.

In my case it never involves sugar, so not sure what extra effect it would have.

As for food, I often turn to Flax, my digestive system needs the help after mixing in too many carbs.

Ugh I did the same thing last night. I've been low carb for a couple weeks. Then I was just going to have a handful of tortillas with fresh salsa (only 20 g of carbs) but I couldn't stop. Had a couple handfuls, then nachos, then five slices of bread.

I'm super tired and almost feel hungover today.

Hi carb free friends.  A question.  What fuel do you use for high volume training and/or racing...I've heard Vinnie Tortorich saying he drinks olive oil not sure i can go there!
