Hey kids,

I just finished up my first full week of "back into tri training" No swimming yet, unless you count going to the Aquatic Centre and looking at the pool, and buying some new goggles. I start swimming tomorrow.

So far I managed to squeeze in 32km of running, longest was almost 13km, shortest was a 3.5km "speed" test. What speed I have left. It's almost depressing how slow I have gotten since running technical trails only.

I had planned to ride on the bike trainer 3 times this week, but only managed 2 for a total of 40km. Biking feels good.

I also managed to squeeze in some easy strength training, and my daily 45min hikes with the dogs.

Today is reward day, there will be a nice big glass of Merlot waiting for me on the dinner table.

Hope everyone else is having a good week.

Cheers from The Great White North
Terry

Terry - Way to get back into the swing of things! Enjoy that well earned glass of Merlot! Or two!

Hi BDAS - Sorry for the long train of posts. I've been busy this weekend with school work and had to catch up on 3 pages of posts. This place is hopping. Welcome to the new peeps! So glad to have you!

It's time to review the week and see how we did on our goals. If you accomplished your goal - consider this a brag session. If not - assess yourself a CLP (Coors Lite Penalty) and think about how you can do better. It's a journey and there is always next week!

I'm planning a pre-dawn run tomorrow morning as well - it's not MA cold, but it's supposed to be right at freezing here in ATX.

4 days into 2016 and 5 workouts.  A tough, long swim set at lunch today followed by a trainer session after dinner.

Nice jobs Dave and Kyle!

How do you do the weight loss???

I set 2 pounds for Jan and am already worried!

I hit 6 workouts including two swims so I'm calling it a good week.

I'm traveling for work next week so that will be a challenge.

Matt- have you been out to the island you can rent mountain bikes on and ride around the trails? I remember we could see Malaysia. I remember taking a boat under the planes landing at the airport. It stands out as one of my funnier business trip adventures. I used to go to Singapore once a year or so, but have not been in years and years. I miss heading over there!

Yes! I have been to the island, Pulau Ubin. Take a little 2 dollar bum boat ride from near the airport. Good memory on your details. I didn't do the mountain bike trails though. We rented normal bikes with kids seats on them and rode around the island. Mind you this was a couple years ago right when I moved here and I was out of shape and smoking still...so it wasn't a fun ride! I do want to get over to the mountain bike park one day.

Looks like I have some catching up to do. I will come back in with 2016 goals and coming week goals later today. If I had weekly goals last week they likely would have been get 4 workouts in, swim at least 2x, and finalise my structured training plan starting in Feb. All of these were complete so two glasses of whisky on Sunday night was also complete

For Thor's challenge I am at 7/24 at this point. Nothing planned for today but that may change with a strength session or a run tonight pending work.

What did I wish I knew when starting out? Two things come to mind. That all those people that said don't overdo it shoukd be listened to. And the cost involved in the sport. Even if doing it on a budget which I try to, it definitely requires some investment.

Does anyone else log their workouts on Strava? I like the social aspect of it and actually seeing different parts of the world people's routes are in. If there is any interest we could create a group there too.

Have a good week all.

-Matt

Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open

12/24.  Yesterday, I woke up at 4:30 in a hotel in San Antonio (kids swim meet) and went for a run to the Alamo and down the Riverwalk.  Today, I started cooking chili and almost (bottle opener on the bottle) grabbed a beer to drink while cooking.  However, I needed my daily workout and it would have been much harder, read nearly impossible, to workout after a good beer.  So, I put the beer back in the frig and finished getting the chili ready.  After the chili was going, I jumped on the trainer for 30 mins and finished the first episode of Making a Murderer.  Got off the bike, checked the chili, and headed out for a 2 mile run.

Now I'm enjoying an Iron Balls (not a prerequisite for an IM, but a beer name) imperial stout.  Next is chili, cornbread, and another beer.

Overall, I am pleased with the week.  I've managed to stay consistent and only negotiated one rest day.  I still have work to do on the intake side, but workout consistency is paramount.

Well my train has just left the tracks. Last night my house was hit by a tornado and the back is....well, missing. Everyone is safe but now the rebuild process starts. I will most likely be in a rental house by the end of the week and it looks like our house will be out for 3+ months. I am staying positive through all this and considering it a blessing. I had painting I was putting off and the screen cage had to be fixed as well. The tornado kinda took care of my chores for me DQ your uncles neighborhood was safe from what I can see and have heard. You know it's bad when you walk out front to see the news crews with the state governor, the sheriff, police chief, and mayor in your yard coming to shake your hand and talk to you.

Keep on keeping on folks. Stay strong with the workouts and I will try to stay updated as much as I can with limited computer access until we get in the rental.

8/24 - 20 min run on the treadmill. Felt good for the first couple min but then about 12 min in the right shin really was feeling tight and hurting...tried to walk/stretch it out but to no avail. Home to stretch and use the foam roller. Hope this resolves itself by this weekend..

Sorry to hear about the back of the house Alex. Glad to hear all is well and that you're in good spirits.

I only did the monthly goal thing, so I'll continue to:

- Eat Healthier (Did this for week #1 but I could have been a better boy)
- Drop 5 lbs from official weigh in on Jan 4th Weigh in is tomorrow morning but I'm feeling good
- Workout 4 times every week totaling about 7-8 hours I did the 4 times thing and ran 24 miles but I may need to adjust the hours. We'll see.

Congrats to all the "Goal Meeters"

Recipe for ya!

I have 13 year old vegan daughter and we like to try to expand her horizons a bit when it comes to food. I made this for her today. I love it. and it's sooo easy. She'll have to try it tomorrow since she's in bed.

Favorite Beers of the Weekend

I'm trying to not drink while eating healthier, but if the family goes out I will have 1 or 2...

Allagash White - Nice wheat beer for those so inclined - like me!
Dirty Blonde - Nice blonde ale from a new brewpub that opened up near me. "The Proper Brewing Co"

Added bonus of avoiding the "juice of the barley" is that I become a cheaper date.
