I have a winter adventure race on Sunday... 15-20 race depending on Snow condition. ALL ON SNOWSHOES! OH MAN! OUR GOAL: FINISH AND GET DONE IN TIME FOR THE SUPERBOWL! Today and tomorrow though, be lazy and unpack boxes, and hang pictures!

I'm gonna try for 6 miles or so tomorrow and then take it easy and watch the Super Bowl Sunday night.

Never in my life did I think I would ever be able to run what I ran today: 7.3 miles. Now, that may not be much for you marathon runner or distance runners, but for a fat guy like me, it's like you guys running an ultra marathon...seriously. Well, I feel pretty good after the run and felt like I could have kept running, but I made a deal with my body that as long as it would get me to a certain point, I'd start walking. So, my body lived up to it's end of the deal, so I lived up to my end of the deal. Next week, 8 miles and then from then on out just try to maintain that and improve my time.

I got signed up for my first Tri tonight. Lord willing, I'll be in Austin doing the CapTex Tri on Memorial Day weekend. I joined USAT, registered for the tri, booked the room, and I'm all set except for completing my training!

I'm thinking about also signing up for the CB&I Tri in the Woodlands the first weekend of May. Anyone here doing that one?

Great job! Isn't it a great feeling to accomplish something that you thought you'd never accomplish?

You'll be doing 10 miles before you know it, then it'll be 1/2 mara and on and on.

Keep up the great work.

Just got back from by run.

  • 9.6k in 59 minutes
  • Temp -16c, wind chill of -27c.

It was cold to start and felt very laboured breathing for the first 2k. Breathing got easier and the run turned out pretty nice. Last 2k was with the wind so felt much easier and warmer. I wore 4 layers on the top and three on the botton. Gloves could have some off half way round as hands felt pretty warm.

All in all a good run and good to get that distance in.

Great job Steve! I've always wanted to do an adventure race! Sounds really fun. Well, for all my hard work on the run this weekend, I think I may have pushed it a little too far. My knee is really sore today. I've had problems with it in the past, but I thought those days were gone. Anyway, I'll probably lay low for a few days, nursing it back to health. Maybe I can try to find a pool somewhere ...

Adventure racing sounds like fun. Good job everyone.

I signed up for a 5k race in Colorado Springs on St Pat's day. I will be down there visiting my brother and his family, so found the race.

Any hints on what to expect running at altitude for the first time. Should I expect to have a really hard time with breathing? Is there anything I should do differently from when running at sea level?

It will feel like you'll never make it! That is only the 1st few minutes. It will definitely be harder, but you will be fine. You may find that you have a headache as well. I would suggest going for a little jog when you get there, just to get used to the feeling. Within a day or do, and for a 5K you should be fine!

BY THE WAY! I HAVE REALLY HAD TO TOUCH ON MY METRIC! YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT USES THIS HERE! Good practice for me I guess!

I grew up in England and it was in imperial, so whan I came to Canada 27 years ago, I had to learn the metric. Now it is natural. I'll try and do both when discussing distance.

Subject: Sick
It seems that I've discovered the key to weight loss this weekend. As soon as I was done writing my last post Saturday night, wham, I got sick. I lost eight pounds in the course of 12 hours courtesy of a stomach flu of sorts.

I'm still on the mend. Had to take off of work today. It's very frustrating because being sick puts a big dent in my training. Especially when it happens two times in three weeks (sinus infection earlier).

Well, I better get back to taking it easy.

Hope everyone else is staying healthier than I am.

Yeah, being down and out hurts the mind almost as much as the body. You might try some zinc, and plenty of vitamin C (you can't overdose on VitC since its water soluble you'll just pass the extra). Hopefully it'll be a short one and you'll be back on your feet quick...

Don't be discouraged. Your body is going through A LOT OF CHANGES right now. You are working out more. It's IN SHOCK! I am sure that on top of everything else you are doing, a break is ok! Hang in there!

Well, its hard to feel 100% ready. I had 100 question neuro exam on friday, 2 anatomy tests today, a microbiology exam tomorrow, and physiology on Wednesday...2 more quizzes on Friday...SO that being said, i'm now working on micro and the only thing I'm truly ready for is a workout and a break.

I was curling last night (so got a bit of an upper body workout).

Tonight is run club and hope to do about 8k in the -10c weather. With the windchill it will be something like -18 to -20c so a little warmed than Sunday's run.

Then to indoor driving range on Thursday evening for a swing at some golf balls for an hour or so, then off have a beer and dinner with friends.

Oh yeah, I have to do that work from home thing, too.

I did 4.7k last night in about 27 minutes. Was pretty cold out there again. Breathing was an issue to start, but kept the pace fairly high and then settled into an easier pace for the second half. Achilles is feeling fine again, so I'm happy about that. Maybe this weekend I'' go for more the 10k run. The half Marathon I have signed up for is only 3 weeks away so I need to do a couple of longer distance runs before the race.

Hope everyone has been getting some training in.

Just don't do a "long run" too close to your race. I would say the weekend before your race do 7 MAX! Good luck.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to improve running speed? If I run 2 miles or if I run 5 miles, I keep the same pace. Lately my pace as been at least 12min/mi and I'd like to drop that to below 11.5min. Maybe it's not something I should worry about during active training.

On another note -- swam a continuous 2000m! Very pleased with my pace, too. The swimming part doesn't seem so scary anymore, but maybe I should try an open water swim....

Try doing speed work. Go to a track Run 1/2 lap at quick pace then run/jog/walk normal pace for next 1/2 lap. Catch your breath, loosen your legs, then repeat. Do 3 of 4 times, then call it a day. Next time.... try a little farther than 1/2 lap... etc. in a couple weeks you should be able to do a full lap at a quicker pace.
