I know this does not seem much for most of you vets however it's really big for me as I have not run that much since HS. And I was not all that winded. I'll try for 4 again tomorrow morning. Next week I'll add in a little biking. That is awesome!!! Bet that feels great, especially not feeling that tired afterwards. |

Veteran 265 | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! So, the week is almost over. Time to start thinking about your goals for next week - same? higher? lower? And when you've finished your workouts tomorrow post up your goals and amount completed. Apparently I set the bar for myself waaay too low for biking. Oops. Swimming, well, I made it but I really did not want to swim that far on Friday, but I'll still increase that. So for next week it'll be: bike 8:50, run 3:00, swim 2:40 (switching to time). And since tomorrow is a rest day for me: Bike: goal-100 miles, completed-149 Run: goal-15 miles, completed-16.8 Swim: goal-8000y, completed-8300y |

Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! Hi Guys. As usual, I failed to see the big picture and bit off more than I could chew. I keep forgetting I'm not 18 years old. Since this past weeks goals were right after a very hard race, I should have scheduled a recovery week of training (as per Mr. Pfitzinger's olympic advice) but of course I did not and almost injured myself by not allowing the proper recovery time. Besides race recovery, I also have plenty of other excuses: sister had a baby, wife sick, 20 degree snowy weather, had to watch the kids, blah... blah... blah. Bottomline is: I need to be a little more realistic with what time I have (or don't have) and realize my physical limitations. Here are my pathetic weekly training results, as well as newly stated (realistic) goals for 1/21/08. Bike: goal - 70 miles, completed - 14.5 --> 20.8% Run: goal - 30 miles, completed - 16.8 --> 56% Swim: goal - 3000m, completed - 1100 --> 36% _________________________________________ abysmal 37.6% of goal Re-committed, now recovered and healthy, newly-focused Goals 1/21/08: Bike: 30 miles Run: 25 miles Swim: 2200m Edited by Dream Chaser 2008-01-21 8:29 AM |

Extreme Veteran 533 Vermont | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! Probably set my goals a bit too lofty, typical for me. No excuses, just need to reassess and balance my workouts. Here's the results. Swim: Goal 2 hours, actual 0 hours Run: Goal 3 hours, actual 1.3 hours Bike: Goal 5 hours, actual 5 hours Weights/Core: Goal 2 hours, actual 2.5 hours Total Goal: 12 hours, actual 8.8 hours I really need to shift gears here and focus on getting in the water. These are the workouts that tend to get skipped when I am pinched for time. Looking forward to another good week. Goals for this week: Bike: 3 hours Run: 3 hours Swim: 2 hours Core/Weights: 1.5 hours Total: 9.5 hours |

New user 15 New Jersey | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! I met my goal of running for last week, 1 mile over. I'm officially sick (thought I would not get it from my daughter). Awful sleep last night and I'm draggin' today. Goals for the week? Surviving? That sounds good. But seriously...I'll shoot for 8 miles this week. 2 more than last week. |

Veteran 217 San Diego, CA | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! Another question on swimming: Is it okay to swim long distance with a pull buoy ? What I mean is: I read somewhere that a swimming coach is suggesting that it does not matter whether you swim with a pull buoy or not - when you swim long distances. Personally, I feel that it is easier to swim with it and that I am faster when I use it - much faster. Any idea anyone? Thank you in advance. |

Extreme Veteran 533 Vermont | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! Ronen, It is okay to swim with a buoy. You should feel much faster. I equate it to swimming in my wetsuit. You feel like you are floating across the water and really moving. This is a good feeling for me. Anyway, I try to do as much swimming as I can, but I do incorporate certain tools into my workouts for various reasons. I suggested to you earlier possibly using fins to help work on your kicking. I use buoys when I went to focus purely on my technique. It allows me to not worry about my lower body and focus on rotating and stroke. I use a kick board from time to time with my fins. It allows me to focus on my kicking and to building leg strentgh using the fins. I even use paddles on occasion to allow me to feel the water on my catch and to build strentgh. Probably more than you wanted to hear, but for me, the bottom line is that, well, I get tired of looking at the "bottom line". You can only swim for so long without getting bored. I try to vary my workouts and to improve the various parts of my technique (in theory anyway). You will find others that might suggest not using any toys at the pool just to swim longer, harder and faster. Well, with all that and no time in the water last week, I am off to the pool. |

Veteran 217 San Diego, CA | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! Thanks for the insight, George! Any recommendation which fins to look for? When I went online (here ) and checked it out - I am not really sure - which set to get... Does it really matter? |

Extreme Veteran 533 Vermont | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! I got a pair like these (http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1264.htm). As you now know, there are lots of different types. When I took lessons, I was told from my coach that she preferred longer fins as they help to improve flexibility and they allow you to push more water (better workout). Anyway, I have been using mine for about a year, and you certainly move in the water and you can certainly tell that you are working!! As for does it really matter, I would say that any fins would help you to build strentgh and improve your kicking. Probably more of a personal preference. I am certainly not the expert here, but these work for me. You might want to find a place whereby you can try a couple of different kinds so that you feel the difference and determine what you like. My coach brought three pairs for me to try and I chose one. Seemed to make sense to me. |

Expert 844 | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! My Dad turned me onto the fins a few weeks back. He is 65 and still swims a mile evey day. I know that you can spend $ and get "zoomers", but I use a cheap pair of Keifer fins and they work awesome. I use them once a week and swim 500 with them then 500 without for my 2500 yards or so. When I take them off, my kicking seems better, It could be mental, but I am sort of mental so that's ok too.... |

Extreme Veteran 533 Vermont | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! I am not saying you are and I am not saying you aren't, but I agree with you that I feel my terribly weak kick is better after about 500 yards working hard with the fins. For me, I believe it helps me to flex my feet and to kick from the hip. Both are important. |

Expert 844 | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! I have an "issue". My plan calls for long swims and runs (for me anyway) on the same day that are not bricks. However, due to the fact that I have a job and kids, etc. I usually have to do them on the same trip to the gym. The swimmin leaves me starving and i bag the run more often than not with the hope I will sneak it in later. Any one have any suggestions??? Crack perhaps??? |

Extreme Veteran 533 Vermont | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! Interesting...I thought it was just me. I am starving after I swim as well if it is a longer swim. I do not feel this way when I run or ride long though. I guess my first thought would be to pack some kind of nutrition, which is what I do. Swim, eat and/or drink, and then run. If you are going to do Tupper, you are going to have to get your body use to taking in some form of nutrition on the go. Given that you have 5 months, you have ample time to try a variety of things in training to see what will work best. Stick with whatever works for you in training. You probably would not want to show up for your race and try something that you had not trained with previously. However, everybody has their own approach. I seem to recall just reading how someone in our group was passing on the clif bars but enjoying donuts. I am not suggesting that you do this, but I suggesting that you explore your options and see what works best for you. |
