Ok.  It's official.  I'm Nutts!!

Did the polar bear swim. Not the polar bear dip like most of the 2000 people who went out but my friend (he almost chickened out til I told him I would never let him live it down) and I did the 100 yard sprint.  We didn't know what was going on so started late and way off to the side so we did a 150 yard sprint.  Were still part of the first 15 people out there, I was the 4th girl! 50 people probably attempted it and 30 probably made it out that far.  So you swim to the boat and then you have to swim back to shore- so much harder!!!  It was fun, body parts were numb and I definitely wouldn't want to stay in the water any longer than we did.  Luckily we were prepared with lots of extra dry clothes so the chills weren't to bad.

Hope you all found an energizing, and probably less nutty way to start the new year!!

I feel like such a wuss complaining about a little wind on my bike yesterday!

Wow!  I am completely impressed.  Congrats!

Last year, I went for an open water swim, in a wet suit (sleeveless) and the water was 54 degrees.  About 350 yards into it, I had to be pulled out of the water for signs of hypothermia.  I am sure that felt like a warm pool, compared to what you swam in!

So I can jump in damn cold water, and have no problem going for a ride or run in the rain.  But I can't seem to motivate myself to do some core work in my nice cozy bedroom or at the gym.  I have no excuse, I even have an exercise ball in my room!

Help!!

I think thats because its at home so easy to put off.... Any way of setting up a penalty and reward type system to it?

If i do my core this week I will....  dont know, buy a bar of chocolate or get my nails done or something?

Wow, we got bumped to the 2nd page, so I had to bump us back up.   Signed up for my 1st race this morning!  I am signing up for 2 more tonight and tomorrow.  I am having trouble deciding between 2 races.  There is one on March 29th and one on April 19th.  I can't decide which one is going to be my first race of the season.  I don't want to do both because they are less than 3 weeks apart.  Hmmmm....decisions.  There are pros and cons to each, I just have to weigh each one.....

Heya folks...and way to go Jeni.  I get grumpy when the indoor pool isn't as warm as I'd like...I don't think I could do an OWS this time of year.

So I started eating healthier today (not gonna use the d-word...no siree).  After my birthday food blowout yesterday (let's just say most people could easily live a week on what I consumed yesterday calorie-wise), I was actually looking forward to it.  I'm a tad hungry (not helped by the fact I forgot my apple so no fruit with lunch) but I'll live.  I'm trying to be good but not too over the top (like I got full fat feta because I like it ... a few calories and grams of fat savings aren't worth it on that one to me).  Anyway, I'm posting my nutrition in my logs if anyone wants to take a gander.  And yes, I seem to have a love of fat (although really most of it is good fat) and yes I have an even greater love of salt.  If I can't have sugar (and I'm diabetic, so really shouldn't), I'll have salt (just don't tell my doctor).

Did everyone see the thread in the main triathlon discussion about swim workouts (since that was a topic not long ago)?  There was a link in there to a cool website called Swim Plan (swimplan.com) that gives you customized swim workouts based on your fitness/ability (or as near as it can guess).  Looks promising if you are like me and can never figure out what to do or are sick of just swimming and swimming with nothing different tossed in.  I figure I'll take the good of what they suggest (you get a plan daily so unless you swim daily you could always pick and choose) and throw out the rest.

Hope all you guys joining me with improving your nutrition this new year are doing well so far!

I'm with you, Kelly. I started my healthy eating on the first. And my weight is dropping (I'm a daily weigh-er). I can't believe how much eating processed sugary stuff triggers cravings and binges. I "purged" on the first by limiting myself to a nearly liquid diet for the day (tried to watch the sodium, too). I was not a friendly or energetic person that day, but I got through it. I haven't had sugar cravings since. Now I know that's only two days, but I usually crave daily and binge more times than I care to admit. I am hoping that this holds for awhile.

I also started my healthy eating yesterday.  I happened to find a food journal that I started in Sept and saw that I have gained 20 pounds in the past 4 months.  I didn't seem that way because most all of my clothes still fit, so I suppose it was an all over thing.  I had the realization I am in worse shape now then when I started this a year ago.  So, my 2008 goals are to lose 30 pounds with consistent training and healthy eating as well as completing all of my races.  My plan it to do some form of something everyday and stick to 1,200-1,500 calories a day with healthy, nutritious food.  I figured if I don't do it now, the weight is just going to continue to go up and it will be harder later on.  This is the major reason why I joined the mentor group, to help keep me accountable and consistent.

Woowhoo for healthy eating!

Ok, I'll admit I was the first to fall off the wagon.  Last night I had dessert with dinner! and I went back for a second cookie!, but I only had about a half a cup of ice cream so at least I attempted to limit myself of something!

Ok.. goal for today- NO DESSERT!!!   And you all have permission to throw rotten eggs at me or something if I give in.

I just went and got sugar free/fat free jello chocolate pudding for dessert for my family.  Top it off with some sliced strawberries and you have a guilt free dessert.  But I make sure I don't tell my kids it is healthy.

We had yummy cantaloupe for dessert. My kids scarfed it up faster than cookies! We can all do this together. It definitely helps to know you are not alone. Maybe part of your weight gain is water retention? I can't fathom a "real" gain of 20 pounds not affecting how your clothes fit. Don't worry. It will come off.

Hey ya'll, so I'm back to work now, vacation over...blah.  Anyhow, I too started the healthy eating, and have worked out a full training plan and all.  Oh, saw that the swimplan.com was mentioned and I used it today.  I have a plan to follow starting next week, but needed one for tonight.

Congrats to everyone signing up for races...my first one ever is 8 March--a sprint.  Really, the bulk of my season is between 13 Jan and 30 Mar, and then end the season with a HIM in Oct. I think I'll do some sprints or an oly in the middle somewhere, but there is too much other stuff in life going on to truly plan it all...

For the healthy eating stuff for everyone, I HIGHLY recommend trying to focus your carbs on whole grains or whole foods in general.  I cannot overemphasize how much real food compared to refined food will totally help out your total health! Just my two cents from my past years of experience (and 20 lbs less and way healthier).  Keep up the good work all!

Hurray for small victories!

I walked past the homemade lemon cake at dinner.  Granted, that is easier to resist than the chocolate cookies and ice cream of last night.

No rotten eggs headed my way today at least

Good evening everyone (although you probably won't read this until tomorrow morning -- LOL)! I had a great day. Unlike everyone else returning to work, I actually worked all through the holidays other than Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so I rewarded myself with taking a couple of days off.

In fitness news, I went and joined a new gym today. My membership at the current will be up in a few weeks and I'd be shopping around for a new convenient gym with a pool to make getting in swim workouts a bit easier. I ended up going with 24 Hour Fitness since 1) they have facilities convenient to both home and my office, 2) the pools are salt instead of chlorine, and 3) I got a great New Year deal. I prepaid for 1 year and got 2 more years for free and will only have to pay $49 per year thereafter to renew my membership.

I also signed up with a personal trainer for 5 sessions (50 mins each) to make sure I get off on the right track. I'll be going in tomorrow for my first session. We'll do a fitness orientation (weight, measurements, body fat%, etc.) and then he's going to design a custom meal plan and workout for me. He had me in stitches the whole time today, so I think we'll have fun in the whole process, too. Depending on how things go, I may purchase some more sessions once the initial 5 are done. My thought was to get together with him perhaps once every 2nd or 3rd week to touch base and make sure I'm staying on track and using my time in the gym as efficiently as possible.

Well, it's off to bed for me. I hope everyone has a great Friday!

That sounds great, Melissa. It's always easier to stick with something if you can have fun while doing it. I will face my first temptation today in the healthy eating journey. Going to a Mexican restaurant for lunch. I've told myself no chips, no sour cream. I will eat my chicken taco salad and not touch the shell. Let's see how well I will listen to myself. Happy Friday to all!

Great job Melissa!  I have also debated setting up the personal trainer.  I hope it goes really great for you!

I have signed up for 2 of my triathlons, and I have 1 more to go.  I will do at least 3 tri's and up to 6, depending on how I feel.

Hope everyone is doing well!
