does anyone notice a higher propensity for getting sick while training? I was typically a person that got one solid cold/year...Now I think I'm getting my second within a month. Coincidence?

No, no coincidence. Working out a lot makes you more vulnerable to viruses and colds and such. You really (heck, I really) need to take a multivitamin supplement as your intensity goes up. Your vitamin/nutrient needs are higher than the average joe's when you put in training volume.

Sorry I've been slack on the thread this week folks. Had a death in the family that set me back a few days.

How's the week going?

Today I did something completely insane. I did a 100 minute run on the treadmill.

Sorry to hear about your loss,

I'm up in St. Louis for work where it has been snowing, so working out on the hotels treadmill, always a great time. Hoping I do not get stuck here when 4-8 inches is expected the day before I am suppose to fly out.

Taking a vacation in Vermont this week with the family. Snowboarding everyday. Everything hurts.

Bummer about your loss!

I am in Columbia about 2 hours to your east and it looks like its going to be a pretty big storm.   Depending on what track it takes there could be as much as 12 inches!!!!  Thats alot of snow!!!!

I have had a pretty busy week...  I went to 2 plays this week.   I had free tix and there were things i wanted to see.   I have had to work through lunches all week so that I can leave early on Friday.   I alluded to it in my log, but basically we decided to switch daycares for my daughter which left us without childcare for a week.   Through the graciousness of our family and friends, we were able to get childcare until thursday, but Friday my wife and I are going to split the day.  She gets her in the morning and i get her in the afternoon.

I managed to get most of my workouts in by doubling up and getting up early in the morning.   This weekend is a bit messed up because my wife has to go out of town on friday evening and saturday, but I should be able to get my workouts in by switching things around a bit.

Have a good weekend everyone

Josh

I tried flip turns a couple of weeks ago. Got a nice scratch on my back to prove it!

12 inches! Whoa. That's hard to fathom for this Texas boy.

I hear ya on the family thing. It can make workouts difficult. My wife is going to New Orleans next weekend. Somehow I've got to figure out how to get a 3 hour ride in.

Cool deal.

Be wary that tri suits are made to fit pretty snugly. As in, skin tight. I normally wear a medium, and the medium tri suit I got from them felt really small at first. You get used to it though.

I think I'm one more day away from being 90-100% after my second bed-ridden cold in a month...Will probably take an easy run or swim on Sunday and hope my body reacts OK. Multivitamin regimen starts today...

How was everyone's weekend? I had a great ride on Saturday and had a good time yesterday hosting a Superbowl party. Great game if you aren't a Pats fan.

I went to a swim clinic on Saturday. It was for beginners, and I actually felt like I looked solid compared to several other people (who were actually better off getting instruction in the beginning instead of learning bad habits like I did). They focused on body position and kick primarily. I was told that my stroke is too short (I need to push back farther before recovering) and that I pause to breath (I know this, I'm trying!). It was really helpful. I'm going to another one next Friday where they actually videotape you, so that will be good.

Back in sunny SC again. I kind of feel like I am starting over again, but that's ok. I am going to start amping up the running and cycling, I seem to have a consistent base down for swimming now, but no where near for those other two.

I do not know how you cold climate guys workout at all. I would look outside, look in the hotel fitness room, and then walk into the hotel bar. You guys have dedication.

Oh, and I am going to start doing skulling sets for swimming (a lost art). You feel like a goofball when you are in the water, but man does it make your stroke efficient.

Go Eagles

What kind of skulling sets do you do or recommend? I definitely need to work on my skulling...

Here is a web site that lists a few of them. The main reason to do them is to develope some strength in the water and really get a feel for how just a little movement can send your body moving. The importance of technique is one of the reasons I am still one of the faster people in the pool, even though I am usually the most out of shape. These are the same people that can run circles around me in pretty much any other activity.

Funny you mention that. It's amazing how many "flat bellies" in our Master's group are in the slower lanes. Our coach can swim circles around all of us, even at age 59. To look at him, you would never guess it. Technique is uber-critical with swimming.

One of my coaches in high school was a two time gold medalist in breast stroke, nelson diebel (i think i spelled that right), anyway, he had not worked out in years and decided to race some of our top guys (and this was a pretty good team) and just crushed everybody. It was an amazing sight to see a guy with a pot belly jump in the water and just fly.

Yup. Looks can be deceiving. Back in December, one of the guys in Masters had his 14 year old niece who was in for the holidays come swim with us. It was absolutely amazing to watch her swim. Mike and I were swimming pretty hard, about 1:36/100 and she blew past us like we were standing still. The punchline - she was breast stroking!

Found out this morning that having a slight case of the flu can definitely affect your swimming. Hope everyone else is staying healthy.

I went to yet another swim clinic Friday night, with Aquatic Edge. It was amazing! They completely changed my stroke. Basically, they teach a wider stroke. I highly reccomend buying the DVD and trying some of their methods and drills. Here is their website: http://www.aquaticedge.org/.Also, they were using these fins which I bought, they are really light and super fast, here is the link for them http://www.zura.com/alphafins.html.If only I could ditch this cold, I'd be back in the pool a much happier camper than last week...
