So there's a couple things about the triathlon that intimidate me (since I'm coming off the couch). That would be the run and the swim. Swimming is going to take some work because I just don't know how to efficiently swim, so I've signed up for classes. But the running. Oh. However, I had a breakthrough today in the fact that I ran for 8 minutes straight twice, which I'm sure doesn't sound like much to a lot of you guys, but I haven't done that for exactly 10 years! It felt good to break that barrier. So 'here's to more barriers being broken in the near future!

What does RPE stand for?

Rating of Perceived Exertion

6 No exertion at all

7
Extremely light (7.5)
8

9 Very light

10

11 Light

12

13 Somewhat hard

14

15 Hard (heavy)

16

17 Very hard

18

19 Extremely hard

20 Maximal exertion

9 corresponds to "very light" exercise. For a healthy person, it is like walking slowly at his or her own pace for some minutes

13 on the scale is "somewhat hard" exercise, but it still feels OK to continue.

17 "very hard" is very strenuous. A healthy person can still go on, but he or she really has to push him- or herself. It feels very heavy, and the person is very tired.

19 on the scale is an extremely strenuous exercise level. For most people this is the most strenuous exercise they have ever experienced.

Question: I was scouting out Triathlons  and I found one April 26th down here in Georgia, but when I was looking at people's race reports from last year I saw that most everyone wore a wetsuit..... It's usually not cold down here that late in April. I'm used to swimming OW in much colder months, besides it's only a Sprint distance. Any suggestions about when to wear a wetsuit and when not too? This might be a stupid question, so sorry. I just was figured I wouldn't wear one, but I didn't want to look like a fool if everyone else did wear one. Thanks!!!

how strong of a swimmer are you? if you are a strong swimmer you have no issues but if you are not and intend on taking awhile you make need the wetsuit.

Is it not also true that if you use a wet suit you could have faster times? for the swim. Is there a distance that a wet suit time to change "T1" would not be the choice? Sprints or olympic, I would think that I would if I could for a HIM.

Are you still taking members? If so I would like to join up.

NAME: Andrew

BT ID firefighter5765

STORY: I started cycling about 2 years ago and have been at it on and off for that time. I have particiated in the Charlotte NC 24 Hours of Booty and completed the MS 150 Bike ride in 2007. This year I have decided that I want to take my fitness to another level, more than just casual enjoyment. I want to get back to my military weight of 180#, be able to run 10+ miles again, and first complete and eventually compete in triathlons.

FAMILY STATUS: Married for 21 years, 2 kids and a dog.

CURRENT TRAINING: I am mostly slogging as I am not really up to a run yet. According to my Garmin gps I am avg about 5.2 mph on my jogs. I cycle about 20-30 miles 16 mph avg on relativley nice days and I have been swimming no less than 1200 yards every other day. I am also dieting and have lost 25# as of this post.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: 2008 Godstock Triathlon Super Sprint China Grove, NC

WEIGHTLOSS: I weigh 248# now, shooting for 180# by Oct 08

Hope you don't mind Mike but I liked the way your post read so I am using your format.

Hey Andrew...

Welcome to our group...I am assuming you live in NC! There are a ton of races around the state so you should have no problem finding a race if you catch the triathlon bug!!

Good luck!

Well I am just getting back on the road after surgery. This past week four times on the bike for 1 hour each and one run for 6 miles at a very slow pace 10min/mile. Total training at 300 minutes about 1/2 of my goal. I hope to hit the 600 minute this week. Wish me luck I am going to need it.

It feels good to be back at it.

Mike,

I am new to BT and relatively new to triathlons in general. Last year I did five sprints and bought some gear (Felt S32, wetsuit, all the little goodies, etc) but need some help in staying focused in training. I need to get in gear for my first sprint is the first weekend in June and I am basically starting fresh again aside from some running and occasional biking this winter.

I need help in a few specific areas and looking for some suggestions, particularly in the swim... can you help?

Mike,

Not sure if you are still taking on additional members? If so, I would like to join.

Name: John

Family: married with 3 girls (10, 8, and 4mo)

Story: Former collegiate athlete, however, the couch and I have become too good of friends over the last 20 years! Got a Trek entry level road bike last year and got the bug. So far have dropped a few pounds but not to where I would like to be going forward. Living in GA helps with the training part and we have several sprint tri's coming up which at least one has my name on it. Looking for some serious help with the swim, currently swim like a boulder or tug boat depending upon your preference. Any who, that’s my story and i am sticking to it.

Thanks

Welcome back Greg, hope you get back to where you want soon. I wish I was that far in my training. I am looking forward to my first tri in May, I just hope I am ready. I had my best training day today, swam 1700 yards and then came home and rode 14 mile in a little less than an hour. I am not sure if I am training right, but I am having fun.

Andrew

P.S. would have been nice if I had hit the start button on my gps, had to go back and get the rest of the course I rode!

Andrew,

Congradulations on the workout. As far as I am concern attitude is 90% of it. What is you swim pace?

However there are some training tips that have made my life easier by making workout more effctive.

Thanks canadarn for the welcome, if things go well in May maybe I will get down to Wilmington for a Tri.

Greg

I am not sure what my "pace" is in the water. I have been just jumping in and swiming. I have been having trouble keeping up with my laps, I usually lose track of them around 4 or 5 hundred yards and then guesstimate from there usually on the conservative side, for example if I think I have completed 1300 yards, I will repeat that 1300 lap again and then pick up from there. I am probable close on my distance, I have swam steady for 50-55 minutes nonstop. If anyone has a good way to count laps I am listening. My goal is to be able to complete a 2 mile swim.

Looks like the weather here in NC is taking a bad turn for the next 5-7 days, looks like I will be in the pool and on the indoor track, still beats a treadmill. Maybe I will do "bricks" tomorrow for the first time, any suggestions on the best way to start? We have a Tri stationary bike at our YMCA near the indoor track.

Andrew
