Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What happened to everyone? Hope everyone is doing well. Nothing much to report except that training is slowly moving along. Swimming is still a struggle to get my endurance back. Thinking Fridays I will skip Masters class and just do a long swim. Running will resume tonight assuming the rain holds off a little. Fighting off a cold which may stop training for a few days. Ordered some Infinit to try out. Expensive. Did 1.5 hrs on the treadmill the other night which was easier than I thought. Small chain ring, decent movie to watch and I was set. Hoping to ride outside Thurs afternoon. Anyone have any recommendations on winter riding bibs? Diane - how is the injury recovery going? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all, Just back from 5 days in Ottawa. I was there for activities related to my role as Chair of the National Advocacy Council of the Canadian Diabetes Association. The trip culminated on Monday with "Diabetes Day on the Hill" - 7 hours of meetings with our federal politicians to lobby for certain actions to address the "Economic Tsunami" that we are facing due to diabetes. I would encourage you to have a look at the following link: http://diabetes.ca/economicreport/ and read the report. The data is Canadian of course but for an estimate of the impact in the US, multiply by 10 (our population is roughly 1/10th yours). In a decade, teh cost to the US economy will be over $170 BILLION dollars !!! B-man - special for you - one of our guest speakers was a young chap named Sebastien Sasseville. He is a 29 year old Type 1 diabetic who just did IM AZ. It was his first ever triathlon of any distance. That is sort of like climbing Mount Everest for your first triathlon!! No big deal though for him, BECAUSE HE HAS CLIMBED MOUNT EVEREST TOO !!!! I feel like such a lazy b__tard when I listen to folks like him speak. Pete |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone, Today is my last day at work before the Christmas holidays. We are driving from frosty Freddy Beach (-16c today) to Ottawa to spend a week with my mom, brothers and their families. Back to work on the 29th and 30th then off the 31st to the 3rd. Nice!! As I look back on 2009 I wasn't the most active racer nor was I the most frequesnt contributor to this discussion thread but I do want you all to know that I really value the connections made through this mentorship group. Thanks B-man for being the very model of a modern major general mentor! No firm goals established yet for 2010 but I know that I'll be starting the year off right as Mrs FBP and I are participating in the annual January 1st Resolution Run. Hope to get a couple of sprint tri's done and also my first Oly. All the best for the holidays to you and yours! Sticka, FBP, Peter |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Merry Christmas !! Found a quiet minute here at my brother's place to log on. Managed to get out for a short 30 minute run yesterday with Mrs FBP (Jill). Weather was lovely and mild. Lat night attended mass at the church where my family has been going since the 70s and where my wife and I were married. Wonderful to be there and such great memories. In response to the earlier post, yes it would be great to add some new mentees to this group. I am going to continue to participate in the discussions. Who knows, y'all might even convince me to aim for a HIM in 2011!! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Back at work for a couple of days (29th and 30th) then off for four days over New Years. Snowing hard here today and temps expected to plummet overnight and remain cold so the Resolution Run should be a fitting challenge. My mantra - "there is no such thing as bad weather just a bad attitude and/or the wrong clothing" Pete |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan & anyone else, Since I can't run, I was thinking of getting more into cycling - maybe doing some Century rides or crits or both... Do you know of specific cycling plans to help me improve Hills and/or Sprints? I looked at the Training Peaks plans, just wondered if you know of a good book or website or anything else that would benefit me. I've just about decided to convert my tri bike to a road bike. I priced out the parts last night, and the bike shop told me to bring the bike in and they will check to see if it's an appropriate size for me... if not, then I'll sell it and get a new road bike. I'd hate to lose my titanium frame, to get anything close, I'd have to spend a fortune on Carbon Fiber... ugh. If anyone knows a reputable place (website) where I can get good components for less money, let me know too. Happy New Year everyone! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all! Working today, Weds, and Thurs then off until Tues. Training is going well, lots of time on the trainer. Got a 1257 meter continuous swim in today. Felt good, could have kept going but the goal was 1250 and I finished that. LRR - I had ordered from Infinit but what showed up was not usable (way too salty). Emailed and called Infinit. They finally got back to me this week. Rebated original cost (but not shipping), called me and we reworked the formula and for the price of shipping they are sending me a new package. A bit of a bummer news. There is a new Tri being put on near by but it's one week prior to my HIM. A sprint, 800m/18.6/5k. Doubt I will be up to a sprint then a HIM a week later. Being put on by one of the local Tri coaches and it is being billed as the USAT Louisiana Tri Championship. They have relay options so may look for a relay team. Diane - ebay was my main parts supplier. FBP - Just got an email on a Resolution run here for Jan 1 but doubt I will make it. Back at it, any idea when we might get some new members? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone. Hope all is well. 2010 is almost here and I have new goals for the year. I've joined a tri club. It's pretty exciting. It is led by a team of local tri coaches. There are over 20 level II coaches in the immediate area. My fitness evaluation is next week. There is a video analysis of the swim stroke (both at the surface and underwater), a computerized analysis of your pedal stroke, VO2 max testing, gait analysis, flexibility testing and training, weekly classes, team challenges, personal training for conditioning and a three-phase supervised strenth building program, nutrition counseling with online food tracking tools, a series of seminars, equipment selection and maintenence classes, group runs, group rides, lectures, etc etc etc. There is a 12-week training program that ends in April, then there is race support for the entire tri season. Club members sign up for races together and those who aren't racing go to support those who are. The coaches set up tents at each race and give pre-race advice and course support. It's really pretty cool. Monday is day one. Baseline evaluations for all three sports. Should be interesting... oh... and I get my team outfit plus other team gear to help us find each other at races. Too too cool. Edited by WhenAllElseFails 2009-12-30 3:20 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Diane - the MS Society gave us training plans which worked great for me. I don't know how to post it here, but I can email it to you. There are two versions of the plan - train to finish vs. train to finish faster. I'm a complete novice so I did train to finish. Had no problems at all. The plan was super easy to follow. The MS ride is a great event. Lots of support every few miles. Plus they put newbies with a buddy who watches out for you and helps if you run into trouble (mechanical or otherwise) I'd encourage you to sign up with a team for group rides. It really helps to learn how to communicate with fellow riders, drafting, etc etc. The American Diabetes Association also has a ride. As do other local charities here. You can probably find a few flyers at your local bike shop. That's how I found a team. They helped with fund raising and had lots of social activities to keep it fun. I'll send you the training program via email. Let me know when you receive it. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Diane - wait wait wait....patience.....I strongly advise caution prior to trying a bike conversion...the geometry is just whacked on something like that.....what would the components cost? I think you might be amazed at what you can buy a nice road bike for on ebay or craigslist....there are lots of bikes available all the time in Austin and Dallas and San Antonio.....and then at some point you will need to buy another tri bike....just thinnk this through thoroughly FBP - sorry about the weather....nicely in the 60 here today with sun...that's F of course....but still....nice day sTRIve |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WAEF - that tri team sounds wicked kewl....I would definitely do it....do you have races picked out yet.....what color is the kit? Also, if you don't mind, send me that plan to [email protected] I would like to see it too. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WAEF - Hey! That sounds like a very cool group. Good luck! Hurrah!!! The tri group that puts on the T-Gator series here in LA just announced their dates. 3 Tri's and a Dua. I was afraid their re-org would fail and they would cancel the series. T-Gator was my first Tri. Now the question. Their first Tri is April 11th, (500m OWS/10 mile bike/2 mile run) which is one week before my first HIM. I really would like to race it but don't want to endanger my HIM. I don't think I can just do it as a training exercise and would probably hammer it. Thoughts? Will at least make their last 2 Tri's. Doubt I will make their Dua. There is a large 10k in NO that I think I will do instead. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() After talking to several LBS Salesmen (and women) I decided to keep my tri bike and put it on the trainer full time and get a NEW road bike! Some of the bikes I'm looking at: Jamis Xenith Race (Femme) Trek Madone (not sure which one) Felt ZW4 Orbea Dama TLT I'm aiming toward the Ultegra 6700 package (2010 parts) still not sure how I'm gonna pay for it, It's doubtful that I'll find any bikes on the showroom floors that fit me (I'm 5'0" short) so, I'll have to pay retail UGH... Here's my question Jamis makes a 44cm bike with 700c wheels... it seems to me like it would look funny, and I wonder about the bike functionally... most of the smaller bike frames use 650c wheels, which is what I ride now... is there THAT much of a difference in the 700 wheels? (other than being able to find tubes easier?) Is it easier to change the tire on one? Does it give better performance? Before I order a bike, I'll make sure they measure me completely, then decide on the exact bike/model I want. It's exciting and nerve racking at the same time. If anyone has any opinion on any of the bikes, please spill...It's gonna come down to which bike will fit me the best - since I can't ride them before I buy - it'll be a tough decision, so if I can eliminate any from my list, that'll help too... HAPPY NEW YEARS everyone! I hope your dreams for 2010 come true ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary - it is a little close however I might do it...the only thing is that you really can't RACE it. You would have to look at it as a FUN taper event and transition practice...that is IT. If you can do that, fine....otherwise, VOLUNTEER. You will be in full on taper and looking for something to do anyway.... Diane - you have the answer in your post....whichever fits you best. Period. That said, if it is a tie (it never really is, but they tell us that), I like to Madone and Orbea best.....that is one man's opinion....I have never owned either one but have a friend who loves his Madone (until he got his tri bike) and I have wanted an Orbea forever. When I bought my first road bike it came down to a Bianchi and Orbea....the Bianchi had a little better components so I went that way.....always kinda wished I had gone the Orbea route. Felt also makes a good bike. Personally I would put the Jamis with the Felt. But it is whichever one fits best.....By the way, however you pay, this is the rights decision I think. Happy new year everyone..... |
