As if I wasn't already sure that Keith at EndorFun is the best race director ever. For Longhorn this year he said...
KEJ - 2009-07-02 9:06 AM yes, we'll have cold towels, and probably SNOW.

I wish some of the other 70.3 race directors took notes from his races.

Long Story* - You asked for it

I started planning the wedding 4 months before our trip to Vegas. This was going to be 100% total surprise to her. The plan was to pop the question there and get married the same day. Yes it was a gamble but I also had her plane ticket home as a bargaining chip. The trip was planned as normal, Thursday thru Monday and 2 couples were going with us.

I ask the future in Laws if they would accept me and of course I got the OK from them. I had invitations made and sent out to friends and family 3 months prior. There was a note on the invitation that said it was a surprise wedding and only to contact me about it. The hardest thing was making sure her best friend aka blabber mouth and her sister aka secrete spiller keep it quiet for 3 months.

So I set it up with the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, to get married at 3:00 on Saturday. I planned for a big dinner with everyone that evening.  I had set up for nails to be done at 1:00, to get her dress that I picked out on Friday at 12:00 and get her shoes I picked out at 12:30. My plan was to propose at 10:30 on the Gondolas at the Venetian. Get license at the court house at 11:00. Also trying to coordinate with about 20 family and friends that were going to be there and make sure somehow she doesn’t see them. I had 8 people stay in the same hotel as us for 2 days that I had to make sure they didn’t cross paths.

While we were there my wife told me that the one thing she wanted was all day Saturday to be just her and I. No nothing else just together time. So Friday her friend mentions a “group dinner” that I have planned. So she is pissed that I would plan some dinner on our alone night. So Friday night she is not a happy camper. Come Saturday morning she is heading out of the room and says she is going to play some slots at 9:00. I am just getting up and tell her to be back by 9:45 so we can go do stuff. I get the “You have been playing poker all night I can play slots for as long as I want to” speech with some attitude to boot. Luckily she comes back at 10 and I am ready to go. She wanted to go to the Mirage and see the Tigers. We get there and of course I am on a schedule. I look at the Tigers for like 1 minute and say “Ok let’s go”. Think of Chevy Chase in family vacation at the Grand Canyon.

We walk over to the Venetian because I told her I want to ride the gondola. She has said all week she doesn’t want to ride it since it $25. I told her I did real well in poker so $25 is no big deal. We get there and its $25 to ride with another couple or $50 for a private ride. I say the private ride is good. All of the sudden I feel searing, scorching, laser eye beams burning the back on my head. I look at her and she says “$50 are you kidding” and just rolls her eye in disgust. So I am concealing the ring ready to get on one knee and spring it while on the ride. One thing I read before we get on the ride is a note “If you get out of your seat you will be kicked off the boat immediately” and wondered if that applied to proposals as well but willing to risk it.

The ring – oh the issues with the ring. I debated on what ring to get for 3 months. I got a ring with 3 weeks to go, took it back 2 weeks prior to get refit. They loose the stone, I have 1 week. It was a nice 1.25k stone. I am like WTF. They say they will have a new one put in the same setting and be ready in 2 days. I am like that’s cool I got a week to spare. I go to get. Here is nice new 1k ring. I am like WTF. I have 3 days. I am on the phone and talking like a sailor and guy tells me he will have stone ready to get on Wed (the day before I leave) and it will be 1.5 and be great. I grab ring take a quick look at it, it is bigger and take off. I inspect it later and it is bigger but ugly as . I now have to us this ugly ring because I have no other.

So back to the gondola. I undo seat strap in boat and move into position. Just as my wife is say “What are you doing” I have ring in hand and on a knee and it all suddenly hits her. I get a big Yes and then tell her we have a time set at the chapel for 3:00. I tell her who is all here and the rest of the stuff about getting her dress and shoes and nails and what not. She finally starts putting all the clues together about why certain people were acting weird about certain stuff. She told me she was pretty ticked at me for the dinner plans and telling her not to be long on the gambling and not spending time at the tigers. Stuff I can still hold over on her today.  The rest of the day went perfect and she still to this day has no idea what I said when I proposed because she was so surprised. Like I tell her she never listens to me.

Oh Todd!  I love it, love it, love it!  Great story to tell the kids and grandkids!

So I didn't know there was such a thing as an ugly 1.5K diamond.  Well...the burning question is...did she like it?

Nice job with all the details.  I'm impressed!

And it's called selective hearing or so I've heard.

The diamond was ugly, there was no way i was going to let her keep it. There were some very visible inclusions and stuff.  She said it didnt matter but it did to me. Took it abck told them to F-Off and went else where. So she actually got to pick her own ring and loves the one she has now.

She loved it. It wasnt a traditional wedding dress but a nice white dress. I need to dig up a pic.

Wow, great story Todd!

Betsy- we did a small wedding on the beach.  Only people who were there were my parents, grandparents, sister, and his parents and brother.  We did a reception afterwards for maybe 30 people.  I am so glad that we kept the ceremony small... I'm not a big publicly mushy person and probably would have been really uncomfortable saying my vows in front of a bunch of people.

So anyhoo, I totally think a small ceremony is the way to go.

Happy Flag Day!!!!

On another note, yesterday I had my longest ride ever!  I did a metric century....plus a couple extra miles to make up for some junk miles that were in there.  It was also my longest solo ride and one of my best long rides!!!  Towards the end of the my ride, after crossing the GWB the sidewalk gets SUPER narrow (think just barely enough room for 2 riders to pass) and there's a low concrete wall/barrier on each side of the path.... my bike and I did battle against a concrete wall, by side-swiping it.....we lost    Bike is fine, leg is pretty scraped up and rashy.  I was on such a high from almost being at the 100k mark that I looked at it shrugged and kept going.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

Hope everyone's is fun and safe and that you don't wake up still drunk tomorrow... you know, like I did yesterday.

Kelli- that's a little scary!  Glad it's just a little road rash and you didn't actually eat it over the side of the barricade or something like that (you know, something I would end up doing.)
