dhopman - 2010-08-22 11:40 PM Hey everyone! I had a great running week - 34.5 miles in 4 days of running with the highlight being a solid 16 miler on Saturday. I'm starting to feel the confidence build for my marathon, which is still over 2 months out so I have plenty of time to work up my mileage. Just gotta stay healthy!

Oooh, one thing I do need to figure out is how much Carbo-Pro I should be taking. I usually throw three scoops into my water bottle (half water, half gatorade) before heading out for a long run. The catch is my long runs have been climbing, but my nutrition plan doesn't change. I'm probably not taking in enough of my drink...

Don't know much about marathon training, but if you put in 16 miles Saturday w/2 months to go before the race, sounds like you are in great shape to be ready!!!

Ahhhhhhh my new tri shoes arrived! They are the BRIGHT yellow ones about half way down this page: http://www.bikerumor.com/2009/09/04/2010-mavic-road-and-triathlon-cycling-shoes/ They are the 2010 Mavic Tri Helium shoes.

Maybe 4 months ago I did a focus group on aerodynamics for Mavic - the compensation is a pair of shoes. It took forever for the order to get placed and filled but finally they arrived.

I need to get some cleats for these and take them for a spin!

It's easy to get hung up on what's NOT going well and forget to enjoy our successes.  Went out for a ride this PM.  Spun at between 90 and 100 rpm for the ride.  Four months ago, 70 was a challenge.  Averaged HR of 152 for the ride and it dropped below 140 when I stopped for a light / was down below 120 by the time I pulled off my shoes.  While it would be great to turn in some really fast times, need to recognize that the gains in the cardio system that I've seen have been significant.

Forgot to say thanks for the guidance on how to improve the power / speed.  I'll sit tight on the weights until the off season / will start to toss in a few hills to build up the strength.

Very true.  It's easy to get caught up wanting to be the fastest one out there right away.  Measurable progress is good!

Good news for my Trek Fuel!!

I looked it over last night. The creaking was a result of loose suspension bolts. I just took them apart last night and re-greased all the bushings. It was quiet as a mouse after that. I got torque specs today and will be re-torquing everything. That sure beats a cracked frame or blown shock! Although, now I don't have an excuse to buy the Fox shock I've had my eye on. LOL

Amen, Curt. Although I'm still as slow as a turtle running, I am seeing significant improvement in cardio. Thanks for reminding me of this!

I'm back from Montreal. Had fun - was only there a week and managed to spend most of my time on the bike. I can't imagine visiting that city without a bike. Got in some really long training sessions while having fun!

Good news on your bike! Hahaa...I once totaled my car, and my husband accused me of doing it on purpose so that I could get a new one. I think the accusation was a little extreme, but I did get a new car Wink

What rear shock are you running?  If it is a Fox or Rock Shox, foret about buying a new one.  Instead, send it to Push Industries in Colorado.  They will service the shock and custom tune it to your bike, body weight, and style of riding.  I'm going to be sending my Fox RP23 to them at the conclusion of this season.  Turn around is currently less than a week too!

Well, first phase of the bike rebuild is semi done.  It has been somewhat of a fiasco.

Turns out my front wheel is slightly dished.  Per DT Swiss, this will require me to place some spacers in the hub to prevent the rotor from rubbing the caliper mount on the fork.  Of course, none of the LBSs had what I needed.  So, I will have to race on my training wheel this Saturday.

Then I couldn't get my rear brake line bled.  I'm still not really sure why, but it seems there was something wrong with the bleed port.  Ended up, having to take the reservoir apart, bleeding them like older models which added a lot of time and pain, but I finally got it done.  Frustrating!

Anyways, bike is back together.  What should of took me a day, ended up taking nearly three days to get done.  I'm going to take it on a test ride in the morning.  Get some pics up tomorrow.

2 x 10 is next!

I've got a Rock Shox BAR. I kinda wanted the RP23 for the pro-pedal. Looking for a little more efficiency. These kids on the 29rs are killing me. But you bring up an awesome point! Maybe, I could find a used Rp23 on ebay and send it out there. What does something like that cost?

I did some golfing yesterday. It was a nice break from things. My pool has been close, and I'm trying to step up my swimming. I ended up going to another Lifetime Fitness almost 45 minutes away just to get my swim in. I hadn't swam in a week!!

Tim, I've also been having trouble with my hydraulic disc brake lately, I can't seem to keep it from dragging (old Hayes 9 brake).  I'm about to bin it and put on a Avid mechanical disc instead!  2x10 sounds nice, how much weight do you think you'll save with that?   Looking forward to the Tahoe race report!

I have a triathlon (super sprint, only a 400yd swim) on Saturday, and while browsing through my recent logs I noticed I have not been in the water since my last race 5 weeks ago.  Ooops!!  I knew I hadn't swam much lately, but didn't realize it was zero...   I was planning on foregoing the wetsuit for this race, but think I will wear it since I'll be so out of practice, and am not a great swimmer to begin with.

I believe the complete service and custom valving runs $199.

I haven't worked on Hayes brakes, but here's a couple things to check.  Make sure the rotor is true.  Look for any wooble in the rotor while spinning the wheel.  Next step would be to reset the pistons in the caliper.  Remove the pads and use a plastic tire iron to push the pistons completely back into the caliper, install pads, put the wheel onto the bike, then pump the brake.

Not absolutely sure, but roughly 1/2 pound.  Not to mention, more responsive shifting and less duplication in gearing.

I'm leaving for Tahoe again in the morning.  I'll be there until Monday morning.

I really don't have any big plans for the race.  I'm not looking to push to hard, especially the run.  I'm feeling better, but I'm definately still beat up.  Race is 2 x 750m swim, 24 mile MTB ride, and 6 mile trail run,  so I'm planning on setting my pace conservatively at 3:30 for this race.

Talk to you guys and gals soon.

I've got those Hayes 9's on my wifes hybrid. We took it back to the LBS several times when we first got the bike. They never did get it to stop rubbing. I've heard numerous other complaints about it too.

Good luck Tim! I peeked at the course maps and am very familiar with the swim and run courses. The water is MUCH warmer than last time you raced up there. I swam that area sans wetsuit early this month with no problem - surface temps are warm. The run will have some ups and downs but nothing too crazy. There are lots of trails that weave through that area - hopefully they will be well marked for you.

You'll be right on top of where my wedding will be next summer. Aspen Grove is right next to the Hyatt which is our ceremony spot. The Chateau us just north of the run course - it's on the Championship Golf Course.

Good luck...I have a feeling you'll enjoy this one more than last time!

my race report from Saturday is up, http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=224458&posts=1&start=1

In short, I sucked...  Not sure what happened on the swim, I can only hope the course was super long or something.  I actually felt fine, swam smooth and finished with the pack, but my time (my father in law timed my swim) was BAD at 3:30/100.  Anyway, considering my lack of training recently and the distractedness of life getting in the way of tri's, I guess I'm happy with the overall effort, but I certainly am bummed to actually be about a minute slower than I was at this race last year.
