Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kaburns1214 - 2012-07-05 7:48 AM jarvy01 - 2012-07-05 7:27 AM Can someone talk to me about mile repeats? If your pace for each repeat is about the same (or each one gets a few seconds faster), does that mean you're doing it right? I could have pushed myself harder during the first mile and got it into the 7s, but then my last one would have been a lot slower. My average HR for each mile went up as well, and I assumed that was a good thing. Can someone take a look at my logs and give me some feedback, please? Also, can you tell me how you approach this type of workout, as this is the first time I've really done this? Thanks, all! You should look for all the repeats to be at the same pace (or for your last repeat to be slightly faster than your first) but your HR should go up for each repeat. The goal is to get faster as you go, not slower. The first time you do repeats its tough because you don't know exactly how they'll feel and how hard you can push yourself but it'll get easier the more you do them. Ok, so I guess I did them correctly then. Just wish I were faster |

Here's my review: Ironman New York City - Course Review that includes lots of pictures of all three courses. Great review! How much of the bike course did you ride? Do you feel like this race will suit your strengths? Only rode the part on Hudson Terrace leading from transition to the Palisades Parkway. The Parkway (which comprises 108 miles of the bike course) is a highway so bikes are not allowed. I figured you couldn't ride on the highway. It looks like more hills than I thought there would be on the bike. Do you think you are going to like this race? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jen - I have only been doing mile repeats (or some distance of repeats) for a short period of time. Kelly is right, they do get easier to gauge and sustain your effort. First few times I went out way to fast and faded. I don't always pace them correctly, but am getting better at it. (I'm just waiting patiently for the speed to come!) |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelly I sent your review of the course to one of my friends doing IMNY. I'm sure he'll appreciate it. Funny story. When IMNY was announced he told his wife about it and thought it was just too much $$ to do it. His wife said "Are you kidding me? You've dragged me to all these backwater towns to race, I'll be damned if we're not going to New York." Ha! So we went to Cindy's Aunt's house for the 4th. They have a pool. Abby who hasn't shown any interest in swimming just took to the water like a fish. Reagan, who says she wants to learn to swim badly, couldn't bring herself to put her head under the water. It was a shocker. Also came to the realization that we have nothing in common, besides love of my children, with her side of the family. 10 hours of talk about hunting/fishing/and how big of an influence Paula Dean is mind numbing. |

Doesn't everyone feel this way about their in-laws? Heck, last time we went to my parents' house, we had to go visit their new property out in the middle of nowhere. Turns out my dad put an elaborate shooting range on the property, so all the adults (minus me, my mother, and my other sister who also has children) went out there to play with guns. I asked my mother if it was going to be this way from now on......she thinks they'll get over the novelty of the shooting range. I'm not so sure. TOTALLY not my thing. In fact I had to explain to my children that we have the freedom to own guns in this country, and some people choose to exercise that right while others choose not to for various reasons. Then I had to go into all the reasons I don't feel the need to own a gun/play with a gun at a shooting range. It sucked bad. That's county livin' for you. I'm the only outlier in my family, and the feeling grows every time I go to a gathering. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess I'm lucky that Cindy relates to/gets along with my parents. We can sit around the table and shoot the _____ for hours. We have a ton in common with them. Cindy is into sports, my family is into sports. My parents want to know everything my kids are doing, but don't voice judgement in our parenting decisions. I think the only time Cindy really gets glazed over is when the conversation turns to politics. I grew up in a very political household as in dinner conversation was politics from the time I was 8 or so on and Cindy was just told she votes Republican by her Mom. LOL. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelly - that was a great review. At the tri club meeting last month we had John Korff, race director for IMNYC, speak about his 7 year struggle of getting IMNYC to fruition. It was very interesting. Are you concerned at all about it being a first year race and the things in NYC that cannot be controlled/expected? Jen - nice job on the repeats this morning!! Speedy! Re: in laws - ugghhhh...I can so relate. I had to change plans for my daughters birthday this coming weekend because my MIL didn't like what we were going to do (go to the beach). I changed it to something inside for her. So annoying. Luckily we are 4 hours away from them so we don't see/talk to them too much. My husband gets along fine with my mother -thank goodness as we live a mile from her! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I saw that thread too Kelly, and read the first couple of pages the other day. Interesting comments, particularly Ron's. I didn't realize he started this site - until the Bryan ban (which I thought was stupid). Anyway, I really only look at our mentor thread, the Georgia forum, and then the Full Vineman thread at the moment. Very rarely do I go to tri talk anymore, it's the same topics over and over. Although occasionally I'll stumble upon one that is quite entertaining with all the sarcasm. |

I like the idea of a subforum more focused on going as fast as possible vs just finishing. I also need to be told that my ideas are f'ing stupid in pretty much those terms at times. I don't take things like that personally. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When I am running (joke) I do get faster on the repeats and the last one can be the fastest, that one is the last and I know I am done after that so can give it everything. |

I'm pretty sure I came home from this year's IMTX with a look in my eye that Cindy knew just wasn't worth fighting. Now it came on the condition that I can deal with training with a newborn and/or a really preggers (see moody) woman. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kaburns1214 - 2012-07-05 10:32 AM I don't go on the Tri Talk forum much for a variety of reasons, but I found this discussion interesting: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=448995&posts=78&start=1 I think your contribution to that thread is spot on, Kelly. Good thoughts. IMO, I think it would be silly to further expand into more subgroups. Perhaps more thread moving is in order, so things like mdot tattoo discussions and other stuff irrelevant to training get moved to appropriate groups (that should have gone in COJ). I also don't want much to change about mentor groups either. I think if there are elite age group athletes and super fast people who want to have a serious conversation about speed and training, then they ought to start a group here....make it an experienced long course group or whatnot. When I first joined this site, I asked a handful of really silly newb questions like "road bike or tri bike" on the main forum. bahahaha. After hearing the "use the search function" reply several times, I started using the search function. I still do searches. I joined this group so I could ask my silly newb questions and get more useful feedback from an experienced mentor. I also needed a more personal community to connect with, as I don't have any triathlete friends here in Cleveland. I still feel like I'm the one person in this group who asks more dumba$$ questions than anyone else, but I'm cool with my role here I've learned more from Kelly and this group than I ever would have learned from the searches or the posts on tri talk. It's been the greatest thing for me. Plus, you're all my friends now. Love you guys. |
