Extreme Veteran 868 Racine, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Vero Glad your back!! sometimes we just need a break from it, believe me you'll get it back Karl their race is in May Dina hopefully it is something simple with your tires Tony x2 on what warren said...listen to your body! Thanks for your input on the training. I am not worried about my endurance it is definitely my speed. I got a log book today to chart my training/HR/Speed etc it's easier for me than using all the techy stuff. My Dr came in to get her hair done yesterday and we had a discussion on nutrition Iam not sure if I mentioned in the past she is holistic anyway I was telling her I am trying to add beets to my diet and she told me how wonderful they are...they help with a whole bunch of things but in particular your oxygen/red blood cells I told her yeah if you can get past the fact that they taste like dirt lol I will definitely keep trying to get them in daily. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED We're leaving today for a short family vacation to Branson. Both of my sisters, all of their kids and my parents. It should be a lot of fun! I skipped my swim today - went to the chiro this morning to put my hip back in place. You know missing a swim is going to drive me crazy!!! I need a day off though. I checked out my training log the other day and realized I have not had a day of complete rest from swim/bike/run since September 15. My volume is not really high but it is probably time for a break already! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Matt I can't disagree with anyone, go pro and don't forget about us little people. Warren I agree with you on the winter interval training. I think if you can manage 3x a week interval sessions that is more important then the long ride. We can build up endurance quickly but those intervals in the winter really help build strength and power which is key to riding faster over longer distances. I think to Dirk's point though it doesn't hurt to do them. You can use them to get a handle on your nutrition and for mental training. I will say that it is hard enough doing the 3 sessions per week and if you are running on top of that dropping the long ride could help in recovery. Another option would be to just cut the long ride down to no more than two hours or do them towards the end of the program. I know towards the end of the 16 weeks I was worn out. doing 4 x a week. I am also in agreement on the running. I run slow nearly all the time and I think that's why I've been able to stay injury free with my running. Since I don't race much I think a few shorter faster paced runs once in a while are a good thing for me. I know I could not run like that all time but it's nice to feel like I can run fast once in a while or what I preceive to be fast. JoAnne that's good to know about beets but there are some things I just can't eat and beets are one of those things. I can't get past the dirt taste. I also don't think I'll be trying that algae powder that Karl is using anytime soon either. Now only if Chocolate Oreo cookies were like that.............well need I say more lol. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Got in a 4 hour practice tri this morning: 0:45 min swim 2:15 hour bike 1:03 hour run This is the first time I've put all three together in a couple years... ha! When I got in the pool, I was having a hard time breathing... it was weird... shortness of breath and it last the first 1000 meters but I just swam through it (decided it might be good practice for IM in case the same happens). I was also a little light headed. But I started out slow and eased into it and finished okay. I was trying to figure out why I felt that way... I've been swimming and feeling strong for months... only things I can think of is I started early and didnt get a lot of rest last night. And I was only awake for about 30 min before hitting the water... ha! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dina have safe trip and x2 on what Brenda said, take a break and enjoy a rest day or two. Will that's a great workout you put together today and I'm sure you have to be feeling good about it. Man you are so ready to do this. I've had that breathing problem before as well but it's usually when I've had layoff and haven't swam for a while or if I'm too nervous before a race. Fortunately the remedy for the nervousness is getting in the water and warming up before the race. That works wonders for me. |

Tonight will be a martial arts workout and then a rest day Friday. I'll do another 3 or so miles Saturday morning and then rest Sunday before picking up again Monday.

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I'm feeling kind of miserable as of late. The lack of running, riding and swimming seems to be killing me. As I rehab my injury and miss workouts because of the PT appointments and extra working day each week I feel like I am becoming grossly overweight and slower than a snail. I cannot wait until the 5 day work weeks stop!! At least at that point I can begin to get 2 certain workout in and maybe peel out of a few pounds. 5-10 hour days, 2 days of PT after work and trying not to interfere with Friday evening activities has drawn me down to 4 available days to work out. That leaves me with a total of 5 workouts available and I cannot even hit the bike hard right now either. It's becoming a mental struggle each and every day I cannot work out. "Patience is a virtue" they say, so I guess that means I am not very virtuous. I'm feeling very agitated!!! |

Tomorrow, we are working the triathlon here in town. It was my 1st ever last year and I told the race director I wanted to help this year since she helped me so much last year. Without the volunteers, traithlons would not happen. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Vero way to go, good to see you making time to get your runs in. Dirk hope your PT is going well and you get back to your 4 day work week so you have some more time to get back to your training. Karl I think that's great that you are volunteering for tomorrow's race. You are right about the volunteers, if we didn't have people nice enough to do that we'd all not doing any races. Speaking of which I will be doing my first sprint tri of the year tomorrow lol. Better late then never! This will officially end the season for me. Looks like we might get a break with the weather as well as it has been overcast with some rain but it seems that it has stayed to the west of us so hoping it gets out of here before tomorrow. I am also doing an unofficial sprint tri the following weekend. Sort of like Brenda's Homebrew 140.6 but not quite that distance. We have self organized a for fun sprint tri with a BBQ to follow for 10/20 with all the Wildwood Warriors which is basically our group of folks who all train together down at Wildwood Lake. This one is definitely for fun, no placing or anything like that, just race and then it will be BBQ and beer! That one will close out the tri season for 2013. Edited by strikyr 2013-10-11 8:26 AM |

Veteran 498 Redding, CA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Tony- Good luck on tomorrow's sprint. Go out and have a blast. That tri and BBQ event next weekend sounds fun too.
Karl - I volunteered at a tri a couple years ago (it's hard to do since they are 200 miles from home) and it was a blast. My wife and I were handing out water and gatoraide at an aide station while our daughters filled cups for us. I've really wanted to do it again but the travel just hasn't worked out for us. Have fun!
Dirk - I'm sorry your schedule has squeezed your training short I definitely understand the frustrations associated with workload forcing missed training. I hope you can use the recovery time to get healed up completely before starting your ironman program next year. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk, sorry to hear it. Be patient my friend and get fully healed. A person with all the base that you have... it wont take you long to build back up and get all your fitness back. Need some advice. Road bikes are on closeout right now and my local shop can get me one for 30% off. I'm thinking of grabbing one. I've been riding mostly in groups this year (even with IM training) and I feel like that will continue. I've pretty much narrowed it down to 2 different models of the Scott CR1 bike: 2013 CR 1 Comp (matte black w/ yellow accent) retail: $2,000 sale price: $1,400 105/tiagra components weight: 18.1 lbs 2013 CR1 Elite (shiny black w/ grey/blue accent) retail: $3,000 sale price:$1,900 SRAM Rival components weight: 15.8 lbs Now, I'm also debating whether or not to sell my tri bike after my IM. I could probably get $1,500 for it easy. Why? Basically, I don't plan to do another IM (wont have the time w/ the new little one and potentially more on the way). And I've been riding upright on my tri bike most of the time anyway. And I've been riding w/ groups a lot, so a road bike makes sense. I may still do 1 or 2 tris a year but am thinking I could just use the road bike. In the end, I don't really see myself having enough time to ride 2 bikes. If anything, I would want 1 road/tri bike and maybe a mountain bike (I keep hearing how fun it is). So what do you guys think? Should I jump on one of these? If so, any thoughts on which? |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED WILL - I can't give you all the pros and cons to road vs tri or Scott vs CR1 but it seems like you really thought it out and can basically do a swap of bikes price for price so I say go for it. Which road bike brings a bigger smile to your face? I know that's probably a girl thing, but I'd buy the bike that I'd be excited most to ride. Black/yellow are my favorite combo so that's the one I'd pick. You're doing so well with your training and now your taper. Keep at it! DIRK - I've been praying for you all day, asking for peace amidst your frustrations. I totally agree with what Will and all others have said. TONY - have a great sprint race! Enjoy the oh so few miles (compared to your IM). Your homebrew sprint sounds fun next week, too. JOANNE - I know I'm late in giving my sympathy over your grief. It's a process and it seems you're at a good place with it. VERO - Good to see you back at it. Time away is never a bad thing.

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Will I agree with Brenda sounds like you already have put a lot of thought into this and it makes sense. A road bike is a lot more versatile then the tri bike especially when you are splitting time between group rides and tri's. I think it comes down to what you are willing to spend. That CR-1 elite sounds like a really good deal for $1900 however you can get the CR-1 comp which sounds like it's a good bike for $500 less and if you do sell your tri bike then it's a wash. If money was not a consideration I'd probably go with the CR-1 elite just because it probably has the better components and you know your going to use it for all your road riding and racing. I'm no expert though and would defer to the bike experts here. Oh if you can somehow swing it and get a mountain bike you should do that too! lol. You'd love it. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I went down to the beach tonight where the sprint is taking place to pick up my packet. Well I don't think we are going to have to worry about rain which is great but man was it windy and the water did not look happy lol. Looks like it will not be a calm swim tomorrow, it'll be a little choppy and rough if the wind doesn't calm down but thankfully it didn't look as bad as the swim in Wisconsin. Holy cow that was bad this looked great compared to that. Hopefully the wind dies down some more and we get a little bit calmer ocean to swim in. It's only .5 mile so I shouldn't complain it will be incentive to swim faster. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Thanks to all of you for attempting to help me keep my head on straight. The frustration bubbles up and seems to invade my mind more recently than the first couple of weeks. Probably the biggest factor in my frustration is that I jumped on the scale the other day and saw a 6 pound increase over my end of season weight. Early in the year I was hoping to be between 150 and 155 at the end of the season and it's not even close. I actually ended the season about 157-158 and was satisfied but the 6 pounds I've added, primarily due to the lack of activity, is increasingly frustrating. I actually should be getting somewhat back on track over the next couple of weeks. The plan to day is to swim and ride. (I really need to head to the pool SOON!) The ride will be with a group and I'll see how the knee feels before I do any big pulls, which is something I'm used to. The knee feels extremely good right now. It's not 100% but I feel it's getting close. I'm very anxious to run but I've decided that regardless of what the doc or PT allows, I will NOT run until the first of November. That should allow more time for my knee and plantar to heal and become much stronger. Once I am cleared to run again I'll slowly get my mileage back to something around (at least) 25 MPW through the winter session. Hopefully I'll be healthy enough to be able to begin some speedwork in the early spring too. Having not done any for a full year seems to have become a little boring. I'll check in later today and respond to a couple of questions. |

Think back to other injuries you have overcome and focus on the success you have had fighting your way back. Tony have a great race today!Vero I know how good it feels to string together consistent runs, keep it up!Karl I also love volunteering, it is the best motivation to race!We r having a fun time in Branson so far although sharing a hotel room with my family is brutal. Friday night I slept on the floor with my ears throbbing from the ear plugs and a pillow over my head in an attempt to drown out my husbands snoring and my daughters sleep screaming! Ha ha ha I started thinking about sleeping in the van or getting my own room after about 2 hours like that. Yesterday I got up early and ran on the hotel treadmill then we spent the day walking all over silver dollar city. I was planning one more run for the week today but right now my legs and feet are not too enthusiastic . And why do hotel pools wait until 10 to open!? I want to swim now! |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Well folks volunteering was a blast, wifa and I worked together in marking at the race. She would mark the guys and I'd mark the ladies. We were 2 of about 12 markers. Here are some funny things we saw. 1 lady i asked her to pull her sweat pants up, she said lets just make it easy and she pulled her pants down, she was wearing a bikini bottom. i said are you riding in that. She said yes. I said, wow, you are tough! 1 lady had her bike helmet on her bike, did n't know what to do w/ the big number. A lot of people had no idea what to do w/ the stickers and jus asked for help. I guy, came in when the transition was closing prior to the swim, i said he had 2 minutes and needed to hurry, he said "naw I'm laid back", he still had to put his stickers on, get marked and everything. He had an old, old road bike, had a water bottle w/ a screw on cap. Someone asked him if he was going to drink the water that way and he said yes. Oh, he had long hair and a beard and was wearing short Tennessee colored plaid shorts, so he was easy to spot. He didn't have a wetsuit, can't remember if his pedals were clipless or not but Pam and I also worked the food tent. He was one of the 1st ones there. He and I joked around a little after the race. The bike... don't let it fool you, he beat a lot of the high $$$ bikes. The last ,person in on the swim got the most applause, they did the back stroke the entire way. They probably swam double the distance because they could not see where they were going. Finally, 2 kayaks, 1 on each side, escorted her in. It was a fun day and no i didn't get my training in today but, my day will come for that. I also talked to a friend of mine who's daughter is on the travel swim team here in town. She practices at least 5X per week and sometimes more. Guess how much they swim. They swim M,W,F, 2X per day for at least 9,000 to 10,000 each day. No wonder I can't swim, I'm not putting the time in. They also run and do core prior to swimming. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I have officially ended my triathlon season today with the Cedar Beach sprint tri. Since they don't have it on the calendar here on BT I can't do an RR but I figured I'd just post a summary of the race here. The weather turned out to be cold and windy this morning with a little rain but not much. They almost cancelled the swim but decided to shorten it from .5 mile to .25 mile and not to do an out and back. It was a one way swim parallel to the beach. It was very rough but we did have the current with us so it was a fast swim. Other than that I would have to say it was not my best race but I had a great time and I really enjoyed it. The best part was that there were so many of my fellow Wildwood Warriors and friends who I train with racing it. They all did a great job and it was awesome getting to race and see everyone today. Overall Place 87 of 158 Swim 7:09 113 of 158 Again the swim was rough today. It was short though and to be honest it was less of a swim and more like being carried down to the other end of the beach. They couldn't even get the buoy's out there it was so rough lol. I can't really call what I did swimming today for real. I got in and tried to stay close to shore and just do my best. I actually swam most of the time with my head out of the water. The other thing was when I stopped I could basically stand and walk in the water lol. All I know is I got in and 7:09 later I was at the end of the swim and happy to be out of there. T1 7:00 148 of 158 Ok my transition sucked so bad but I have many reasons for this. No I did not have a BBQ going and no my expresso machine did not break in transition. The beaches on the North Shore of LI are rocky so walking around there before the swim with cold feet didn't help. My feet were killing me when I got out. The carpet was great up to the parking lot but since they changed the swim the transition area was a long way from the swim exit. My feet hurt so bad I just could not run on the pavement. I couldn't even fast walk. When I finally got into transition I was very slow to get my wetsuit off. Then the biggest problem I had was my bike gloves. I couldn't get them on! I don't know why I spent so much time messing around with them. The bike leg was only like 14 miles I should have just said forget it and been on my way. I didn't even need them to be honest. No urgency here today, maybe it because my mentality was to have fun and not really to compete. Bike 45:45 44 of 158 I had a great bike leg today. I figured I was so far behind with a very poorly executed transition I needed to make it up on the bike and I did. I hammered most of the way and I passed a lot of people on the course. I got a lot of people on the climbs. I just spun up them and went on my way. The course started with some pretty good uphills and there were some other hills along the way. I train on parts of the this course so I know it well. I tried to take advantage of the downhills here as well to make up some time. It was a two loop course so the second time round I passed more people on the climbs. All the work I did this year definitely paid off the bike has become a strength for me and I can take adavantage of that on these kinds of courses. Overall I think I had a very good bike leg. I rode hard but I didn't over do it and had plenty left for the run. T2 2:34 151 of 158 No sure what took so long here. Maybe getting my racing belt on? or tying my sneakers. I didn't even bother putting on socks for either the bike or the run. It didn't matter though. I really do need to improve my transition times. I think today I just wasn't very organized and didn't move with a purpose. Run 25:07 92 of 158 I think had a good run. I'm pretty slow so to break an 8:30 mile for me is an amazing feat lol. I just gave it all I had on the run. It was a two loop run through the beach and the beach access roads. There are some paved winding walk ways in and around the area like a park. It was probably a little short of a 5K. I just ran as hard as I could on both loops without blowing up. Overall I think I did a good job especially after pushing hard on the bike. I definitely think my run has improved this year with all the slow running I've done. I need to see if i can get a little faster though for these shorter races. Comments I haven't done many sprints this is my 3rd one. I think for sprints you have to be fast and I'm not. I don't think I'm cut out for this distance right now. I need a lot more work to get faster. My transitions aren't good, they suck. I'm not a fast swimmer or runner. I can hang on the bike with most people but they'll all pass me on the run. I get out of the water and T1 and I'm way behind. I enjoy doing sprints but I'm a MOP at best at this distance right now. I don't think my head was in the game today. I forgot to put on my HR monitor before I put on my wetsuit. I forgot to start my Garmin for the swim. I did a very poor job getting my wetsuit off in T1. I couldn't get my bike gloves on in T1. I really think I went into this race not thinking about being competitive and just doing it for fun. I think the whole thing with the swim threw me off as well. I wasn't sure if we were swimming or going to do a duathalon. One minute we are swimming the next minute we may not and then we're swimming again. I also think the weather with the cold and wind just made me think I shouldn't be here but I should be in my warm bed sleeping in lol. My friend Bobby talked me into doing the race he also talked our friend Mike into doing it as well. Mike and I joked that he conned us into doing lol. That may be true but at the end of the race I think we were all pretty glad that we did the race today. I had blast and would definitely look forward to doing it again next year. I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to complete what I call the quadfecta, completing a sprint, oly, HIM and IM all in the same season. What a great way to end the season and what a memorable season it was. |
