Go Mav!!!

Okay, should have looked at my plan before asking.  Looks like the workout the weekend before is even more than the Tri. 1.5 hrs bike ride and 45 min swim on Sunday.  1.2 hr run on Saturday.  Going to do the Tri and beat my time.  Hopefully warmer than last year with air temps hitting 40 (water was a balmy 66 degrees).

Got 2 hrs on the trainer today.  Off tomorrow.  Back to the swim on Monday.

Looking forward to welcoming the new folks to the group!!!!!

Name:  Left.right.repeat aka Bryan

Story:  This is my third year as a mentor.  My group will be a little different from many of them on here and I want to explain how.  I have a couple of folks from my first group, a couple from my second group and then we will be adding those of you who might be interested.  The group is male and female, evenly divided, from Canada and Boston to Louisiana and Texas.  All middle aged (don't tell them I said that)....my 50 year mid life crisis in 2009 was my first Ironman - I finished IM Arizona in November.  One of our other members is doing IM Arizona in 2010 but don't let that intimidate you...several just did their first sprint in 2009.  We are a welcoming group that is looking to add some new blood and excitement.  Join this group and benefit from several wicked smart mentors.

Family: Married with an adult daughter

Current Training/2010 Races:  Half Marathon, Olympic triathlon, Half Ironman, Ironman and other epic endurance events.

2009 Races:  Houston Marathon, CapTexTri, Austin Triathlon, Prairieman HIM, Ironman Arizona and several other events.

Weightloss: 46 pounds in less than 36 months

What makes me a good mentor:  The other people in the group....LOL....we have fun.

You have signed up....you're in....take a look at the questions I answered above and give me some background on you and what you are looking for out of the group/triathlon.  Before moving to San Antonio, we used to drive through Hattiesburg 2 - 4 times a year on the way to Destin....I have slept in your fair city many times....

Story
I  came to the sport of triathlon with no previous experience in biking or swimming.  I had just a little experience running but nothing over 6 miles.  My younger brother trained for and completed his first Ironman last year in AZ.  He kept after me to run the Indy 500 mini marathon.
I told him there was no way I could run 13 miles.  But I finally accepted the challenge and signed up.  It made me feel so nervous I almost felt sick!  He gave me a training plan and I got busy.  Last May I ran the Indy mini marathon and finished even with a bad leg.  My brother also gave me a transition bag and goggles the night before the mini and told me I should start swimming and I could do the Terre Haute tri with him at the end of May.  I thought he was crazy.  But I thought I might as well "tri." lol  I got a road bike, strated riding and started swimming.  I completed the Terre Haute Tri and I was the last person to finish but I finished!  Then I completed the Sprint portion of the Muncie Endurathon in July.  I volunteered at Ironman Louisville because my brother was a participant.  I got the bug and signed up.  Oh No!!!  I traded in my road bike for a tri bike.  Next I completed a duathlon in September.  Then my brother also participated in Ironman Florida.  I went as a spectator.  It was so exciting and motivating! December 19th I just ran a 5k with my brother.  I am SLOW!  Somedays I feel so excited that I have signed up to complete an Ironman and other days I think to myself..."What have I done?"  I really enjoy the training and the challenge.  I have even encouraged a few of my friends to sign up and train for the mini!

I work full time teaching first grade.  I recently coached a Girls on the Run team at the elementary school where I teach.  We completed a 5k with the girls in November.   It's great to be able to train in the summer and not have to worry about going to work!

Family Status
Married with 2 very active boys 13 and 15.  We stay very busy with soccer, basketball and hockey.  We also have a beagle named Blizzy.

Current Training
Using a training plan from my brother.  My swim is slow and I hope to improve that.

Last Year’s Races
May 7, 2009 Indy 500 Mini Marathon
May 30, 2009 Terre Haute Triathlon
July 11, 2009 Muncie Endurathon Sprint
September 17, 2009 Bad to the Bone Duathlon
November 14, 2009 Run in the Park 5k
December 19, 2009 5ks of Christmas

This Year’s Races
May 2010 Indianpolis 500 Mini Marathon
May 2010 Terre Haute Tri
July 2010 Muncie Endurathon 70.3
August 2010 Louisville Ironman

I'm already in one mentor group of just girls.  But I see you just experienced your first IM.  Also you said you have fun!I love to have fun!! LOL  Who doesn't?? Laughing  I'd love to be a part of your group!  And I am middle aged...45...just don't like to admit it!!

You will have to bear with me.  By answering the questions I am assuming you mean, age, training, races completed, and goals?

48 years old
Started training in Feb. of 09
Completed 2 half marathons, 2:00 and 1:46
Completed 1 full marathon, 3:57
2 sprint triathlons
Numerous other shorter runs, up to 10 K
Lost 40 pounds since Jan 09

My plans for this year are

Rock and Roll marathon in New Orleans, Feb 28
Registered for New York Marathon in November
Registered for Louisville IM on Aug 29, 2010.  I would like to complete in 13 hours or under. (possible?)

I am riding a Kuota K-Factor bike and need many questions answered about setting it up correctly, etc.  Longest ride on this bike to date is 45 miles.  Only had it about 3 weeks.

Are these the questions you needed answered?

Amy - you are certainly welcome and will fit very well in our group.  What I am going to do is take on about 5-6 new members here and then get you all the link to the other group so we can all be together.  Using the current link will give you 113 pages of reading to catch up on in your spare time.  Every triathlete I know is a bit compulsive (ya think?) so I know you will get to the reading....some day.

I have a very good friend who did Louisville as his first IM in 2009...it was a great day this year, I hope for the same good weather for you.....sounds like you have your work cut out for you to be ready but you certainly can be.  Right now the key is to not OVER DO it.....which I am sure is hard as you are stressed about signing up and want to get after it....it is just a little early and I don't want you to burn out before the race.

What are you currently doing in workout intensity, duration, and frequency?

As far as speed, there is none where I am concerned....I do this to finish, be healthy, inspire others and do things I never thought were possible.....the day of Ironman is a day of management of resources.....don't forget that.

Billy - you are in great shape...thanks for the answers...that is exactly what I was looking for....I would reiterate to you what I said to Amy - I want you both to be careful not to do too much right now....while IMLou is a big goal....I understand....it is a long way off.....don't overdo it too early and burn out.  You are a strong runner based on your times and we have a runner in the group who I know you will enjoy getting to know.  Your 13 hour goal is lofty for your first IM but that is not saying it can't be done.  I know a few folks personally who have done it.  As I told Amy, IM is about utilizing and managing a limited amount of resources and doing it wisely on race day.

After the marathon in February we will want to dial the running volumes way back for a while to let your body recover.  45 mile rides right now are fine....just get some time in the saddle and don't burn all your SAUs (spousal approval units) - brownie points - kitchen passes - whatever you want to call them.....you will need them later this summer for those 6 hour rides with an hour run brick behind it.....

Happy New Year!!!

Amy and Billy---

I also think you both want to look at trying to find a Half Ironman distance event about 8-10 weeks out from Louisville if you can.  I would like you to have a Half under your belt before Louisville and that is about as close as I really would like you to do it and still have time for recovery and your real long bike workouts.  I don't want it too much earlier because I want you to get that good base under you before you do it.....

As I think you both know, you are pushing the envelope a bit here going to IM distance in your second year....most say you should be at the end of your third season......HEY, I DON"T LISTEN EITHER....I did mine after about 2 years and 3 months - my first race was in Aug of 2007 and I did IMAZ in Nov of 2009....it was GREAT!!!!  I had a spectacular day...can't wait for Florida this year.

Billy - your wife will be exhausted...spectating at an IM is a grueling day....but we will get her some inside information on where to try to see you out on the course.  The IMLou bike course is out of town, then 2 loops and then back into town as I understand it.  Between Amy and the others I know who have done it, we will get her some good spots.  How long have you been a cyclist, or is this a new hobby for you?

Billy - I thought about New Orleans for you but I think it is just too quick.  We gotta get you a little rest in here or you are going to go into Louisville FRIED.  I would maybe look at Buffalo Springs timeframe.....that is a tough HIM but would be about the right time....there may be some closer to you though.

Several years, but on a mountian bike.  We have a great paved trail to ride.  I have ridden 70 miles several times on  this trail, the Longleaf Trace.  I just got the tri bike and haven't logged many miles yet.  I will start looking for another half IM.  Can it be an olympic distance or does it need to be a half?

Bryan,
Thanks!  That sounds great.  Ha I've already done a little reading of the 113 pages!

Right now I am just keeping my base...not going too crazy.  I'm swimming 1000ms 3 or more times a week working on form and speed.  The only swimming I ever did before May 2009 was only recreational or to word it simply...dog paddling! LOL  The same was true for my brother when he started out.  I am running 3xs a week 3-4 miles with my longer run being 5, 6 or 7.  Then biking on my trainer doing speed and power at least 3xs a week anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.

Yes IM Louisville this year was perfect weather!  I'm sure next year it will be HOT!

My goal is to finish!  I do want to make sure I can beat those cut off times.

Sounds like this is going to be a great group!!!

Ok....both of you....I would be fine with 2 x each sport right now each week....that's 2 runs, 2 swims and 2 rides....Amy I like your 3-4 mile distance with a 5-7 long run.  1000 in the pool right now is fine....you might push that distance a bit to say 1200 in a long swim at least every other week and as far as the ride....I would work intensity for an hour to an hour and a half on the trainer (about 2 hours outside is fine) staying on the trainer longer than 90 minutes is tough but make the workout hurt....a solid hard hour on the trainer is harder than 2 hous outside for a lot of our friends....by the way - think of it this way....it doesn't matter who is a rockstar in Jan or Feb.....we want to hear Mike Reilly say......"______, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN"..... I have to tell you it was one of the most incredible feelings of my entire life....on Monday after Arizona I was talking to one of our other members who asked how I felt as she was kinda nervous about signing up for IMAZ 2010....I told her I felt JEALOUS.....why, she asked...."because I know what you have to look forward to and I will never have another first IM finish line....."

Billy - I would prefer a half ironman distance for you....pacing and nutrition matter a lot more in a half and would give you good practice.....an Olympic in late May/early June would be okay.

How are you both in open water swims?

OWS..I plan to get a lot of OWS in the warmer months.  Two years ago no way would I have swam in open water without something close by to grab hold of if needed.  My first one I did was wetsuit legal.  I was slow but had read so much about people freaking out that I just put my mind to it and tried to relax.  I did ok and I didn't freak out...I need to work on sighting.  I did some OWS in the ocean this summer and also in November.  I know Louisville will not be wetsuit legal so I plan to do plenty of OWS this summer with no wetsuit.

I hav, but stopped for the e done several open water swims, all in lakes. nothing over one third mile.  For the last 6 months, I have been swimming 3 days a week, 2500 to 4000 yards at a time, but took off a couple weeks ago for Christmas.  I plan on starting again on Tuesday.

I am looking at the 1/2 IM in Macon Georgia in June.

So 2x a week per discipline?  How far per run, swim, ride?  The Rock n roll marathon is not that important to me so I can so don't let that be a factor in the IM training.

Thanks again for the help.

When do we get to meet you?

Bryan, you got any spots left in your group?  I'd like to join..

A bit about me. I'm 33 (almost 34), married to my wonderful DH for 6 years and have two awesome kidlets-4 years and 8 months.  I'm originally from Russia, but have lived in US for 14 years now.

I started doing tris about 7 years ago, with breaks when having kids.. I used to be on BT pretty actively, but have been gone for probably a year and a half-having Lukas and being lazy, generally hehe.  I have done a few Sprints (probably 10-12?), 6 or 7 Half-Marathons and lots of little races.  I am registered to run the Champagne marathon on May 1 and am just now starting to train, so I have A LOT of ground to cover in very little time.  I also plan to lose 54 lbs this year, so I know that my work is cut out for me, but I'm ready to jump on the bandwagon.

My planned races for 2010 so far:

registered: Cary HM in March, Champagne Marathon in May, Chicago Half-Marathon in September;

planning on: 2 more HMs, 4-5 5Ks (want to do one every quarter just as a measure of how my speed is improving...I do not know why, but i have never enjoyed a 5K, and will run a HM any day over the 5K), 3 Sprints and possibly, an Olympic.  I would also like to register for the Chicago Marathon (October).

If you have any other questions, ask away!!

Lena

Bryan,

If you still have room, I would like to join your group.

My story:  I enjoy running and biking but I am a terrible swimmer.  I have done a number of marathons, half marathons, and adventure races.  I really need help with my swimming.

Family Status:  Married with three kids (2 girls and 1 boy) ages 7, 5, and 15 months.  They keep me extremely busy.  Most of my workouts start at 4:30am.  If I don't get my workout done in the morning, I don't have time to train but as a Christmas gift this year, my wife wants me to train for a HIM.  I warned her of the time commitment.  It's the best gift she could have given me.

Current training.  I run 4 times a week, bike 3 times a week (all inside now since it's only 5 degrees in Indiana today), and I am trying to swim 3 times a week.

Last year's races:  I did a number of 5K's and the Indy Mini Marathon.

This year's goal:
Indy Mini Marathon
South Bend Marathon
Muncie HIM
Lafayette, IN 1/2 marathon.

please let me know if you still have room

Thanks

Mav - thanks for the kind words...our group formed on Jan 6, 2008 so that is probably closed to 24 months....but I like being 6 months younger....LOL

Amy - no wetsuit in Lou was why I asked....you will be okay...just wanted to be sure you had been face down in dirty water....

Billy - 2x per week is fine right now....I would say 2000 to 4000 on the swims is fine however you do the distance....even 1500 would be okay -- one should be a long swim of at least 1200....Runs: 3-4 one run and 5-7 for the other (in your case let your marathon training dictate rightnow.....you are probably looking at one more long run, right?.....if so day off before and day off after the long one....and the bikes...well I ride indoors some just to do the intensity I want so that one is about an hour and then if I get outside I ride 2-2.5 hours, if the second one is indoors it is max 90 minutes....

Lena - welcome to the group....being run focused is fine...as you know, you just want to work into it so you avoid injury....do you have a goal for the marathon or is it just finish?

jslacker - welcome....what a great Christmas gift....now let's go get that medal and photo to frame....again, as I have told the others, (please read the first page of posts as well), keep the workouts fun right now so you don't burn out to early....we will get there...I promise....

Walker - welcome and Xterra is definitely welcome....hopefully we can get you to tolerate running and swimming with a bit more exuberance....I have found that the swim is a place where I can let all the stress of the day or week float away and I "zen" or "zone" out and then it is just a really cool deal....maybe it will get there for you too...I had a guy in the group year before last that lived in Utah and was a big mountain biker....when we migrate over to the other group thread you will want to look for the old posts of Leston to check out some really wicked cool pics....

For the new three folks - this is my third year so I have a big thread of 113 pages that we are going to move over to once we fill this new group...that's a LOT of history and a LOT of your questions already answered as well as questions you didn't even know you had yet....LOL....we have a great group of folks with a lot of great advice....Here's how I run this thing.....everyone has an opinion and an idea and we are all welcome to share - if you are crazy, whacked out or whatever, I reserve the right to ask you to temper your comments.  I will intro you to the group when we move in with the other folks and they were all in your boat either one or two years ago so all questions are welcome....imagine that you have just joined a tri team with members of all aptitudes, attitudes, geography, senses of humor, levels of accomplishment and experience.....that is what you have just signed up for.....you WILL have a great year.

Hi Bryan!

is your group still open? I would love to join, as I am going to "tri" my first triathlon this year, with no prior experience - all for the fun of it!

Ok, about me, I'm 39 years, live in Las Vegas and Seattle with my lovely husband of 13 years. I am supersuper busy, and travel every month - which is the toughest factor with workouts.

I was very active in sports all my life, including x country runner, rowed in university, then graduated was a 35 mi/week runner. Got an undiagnosed thyroid problem for a few years, gained a lot of weight, and stopped running. weight fluctuation has been a challenge, but no excuse

Now, i'm wanting to get back into sports again, lose all the thyroid weight, and be at my best form ever!! I LOVE to run, like to bike, love the water, but I'm not the strongest swimmer. I really want to become a strong swimmer through this process.

I'm really hoping for good tips on how to approach this. I am thinking of also joining the local TEam in Training, as my mom has Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, so I'd love to do anything to help towards NHL, while doing my first "tri".

My wonderful husband downloaded a Tri training plan - 6 months to anOympic. I have a lot ofweight to lose, so I'm not sure if this is the best training plan for me. I"m hoping for any helpful tips on training gear, training plans, tips for the frequent traveler, and also a fun group to help with motivation.

Thanks, Anne

ALL - later this evening or tomorrow - after we add one more newbie - I am going to copy all of these posts over to the other list....along with a bit of intro to the existing group....you will be welcome....all questions are welcome and they are some smart folks so they can help you too.....one of them is also a mentor in another group and the others are qualified to do it if they chose.  Feel free to fire away at any of us.

I travel some with work so I am in and out from time to time but try to check in regularly.  For example, I am travelling with work leaving tomorrow back on Monday afternoon, out Monday evening, then back on Wednesday and then to Disney with my wife and wonderful sherpa, Debbie for her first half marathon.....on Saturday.....

Hang in there....ask away and we will get you all to the finish line....

See you at the finish line,

Bryan

Bryan et all...

thanks for taking me in.

I live near Chapel Hill NC, and work at UNC. I am 31 with 2 young children... 3 1/2 years and 15 months. My wonderful wife keeps us all on an even keel and puts up with my 4:40 wake up time.

I've done several sprint tris and 1 xterra... allbeit almost 4 1/2 years ago. children and graduate school got in the way. I have made the goal of doing 2 xterras this summer.

I am a biker at heart. I lived in the mountains of NC when I did my first xterra and fell in love with road riding as a training tool. Now that I live in the flatlands, I've picked up the trail riding again.

As I said in the earlier post, I do the other two disaplines so that I can race. I really enjoy the race-day atmosphere.

This will be an interesting experience for me, as I am trying to do this with a training plan and a much more diaplined approach.

right now I am spinning 3 times a week for 60-90 minutes. We cycle through sub-AT endurance rides, speed play, and intervals. I am intermitantly adding running & swimming into the mix.

My 2010 races:

Xterra Tsali - 6/6/20
Xterra Atlantic Cup - 6/20/10

I know they are close together, but should be fun.

Walker - are your current rides outdoors, on a trainer or in spin class?

So all of you know, I am a big fan of spin class IF they are (that's a big IF) IF they are set up to simulate outdoor rides.   If they have a bunch of crazy jumps or up/down/up/down/up/down crap then I am not as much of a fan....in any case - I ride as if I am outside.  If you go to a spin class you are hereby ordered (wow that was strong) permitted to NOT DO WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR SAYS IF THE INSTRUCTOR IS NUTS - and you can tell them I said that....LOL....simulate an outdoor ride and spin class can actually do you as much or more good than an outdoor ride....(the sound you hear is the soap box scraping on the floor as I climb off).

Bryan,

The rides are in a spin class, though luckily taught by riders and not aerobic instructors. I agree completely about the crummy classes that are out there. If one of my normal instructors miss class and the sub is not a rider, I settle in for an endurance ride in zone 2. I also tend to ride with a HRM so make the class what I need it to be vs. what the instructor wants it to be. My gym tends to show old tours or tris on screens, so if a class is going badly, I can focus on the displays, or on the music.

Walker - sounds like my club...the instructors at Lifetime here in San Antonio are almost all riders and I ride outside with many of them so they do a nice job....I reinforce from time to time that is why I come to class....on Saturday mornings if the weather is bad I ride the 8:30 class then ride alone from 9:30 - 10 and then ride the 10 - 11 class for an awesome 2.5 hour ride....it is really good when it is intervals or hills....makes that second hour grueling but fun.....on your next "on your own" ride....try this one....warm up, then do a 20 minute time trial (as hard as you can without blowing up) then 2 minute spin to "recover" and then hit it again for another 20 minute TT -- good luck on the second 20 minute interval....the goal is to ride both 20 minute intervals very similarly in exertion without an explosion.  This is a classic power measuring workout to determine threshold power....

I'm very interested in this group if you still have an opening.  I've been training on my own, and I'm ready to start an organized countdown for my 2010 events.

I was a college swimmer and I completed two half-marathons last year.  Right now I only average about 12 minute miles on the run, but I had no issue going the whole distance without walking.  I'm slowly adding seat time to my bike rides so that I can improve my bike leg, which is my weakness right now.

I'm still planning my race calendar, but I've done some sprint distance triathlons in the past and plan to do some Olympic distance this spring and summer and end with the 1/2 Ironman distance Rev3 event at Cedar Point in Ohio.

Right now I swim once a week, run 2-3 times a week, and cycle 1-2 times a week.  I usually do some eliptical or aerobics classes too for some variety until I can get back outside more.

I know I should swim more, but right now I'm happy with my swim endurance and pace, so I really want to build up my mileage on the bike.

swimmermama - welcome aboard....you will be the door closer as I am going to close up our little group.....so you made it.....yippee!!!  As far as your training right now...I would like to see you on the bike more....focus on that limiter....if you have access to spin class it is better than a trainer....see my post above regarding instructors....but time in the saddle will make a big difference....the swim will come back very fast....trust me....

Welcome....please take some time and read over this post and the earlier ones.  I am about to give you all the link to the other group....please save that as your favorite as we will move there from this point forward.....

if you come back here I will find you and redirect you....don't worry.....

Oh... and my name is Nancy, by the way Wink

I'm 34, and have a 7 year old and a 5 year old.  I'm usually home, but my husband travels for work and is a pretty serious cyclist, so our training time has to be pretty organized to fit it all in.

New Folks - here's the folks....

see all 113 pages of history....mmmm....may take a while but I strongly recommend reading 4-5 pages a day to learn who is who and to also answer a TON of your questions.....you will be ridiculously smart if you just read those pages.....

For sure, search "leatherback turtle" and read the story of why there are turtle references quite often.....you can also search "butt" to read some funny stories about one of our members.....(wonder who that could be????).....

FBP - runner man....Canada - aka sticka - cause he got custom stickas for his bike....(we are big on bike porn here) - diabetes fundraiser....some great videos for your entertainment.....Pete we need more video....none lately.....

Mav - marianne - swimmer extraordinaire....mav, I have used that word twice when speaking of you tonight.....aall around great person - who I hope to meet up with next weekend at Disney.....Mav can cure all your swimming woes....although Mav....meet swimmermama....collegiate aqua studette......hmmmm....can you say.....race?????

Gary - our resident Cajun - very exuberant about his sport.....he keeps us all on our toes...and works harder than all of us....

Diane - shark - like Gary, she was new to the group in 2009 and has done a great job....a wise trainer and smart...now if we could just cure her shin issues....

WAEF - well, she is here and there....she got married....showed back up.....we are glad shes here.....she made her goals in 2009 and that's what we are all about....

You might see MSUDan at some point - a 2008 member who took a leave of absence in 2009 as did LESTON....hopefully he will come back in 2010 as well....we could use another mountain biker....

OK folks, you now all know each other....play nice and I am just going to sit back and monitor your education.......

By the way, we are becoming a long course group by our membership (not by design) but 4 of us are doing an Ironman next year - 3 of you for the FIRST TIME....I cannot wait for you to experience what I did just a few short weeks ago.  We also have a lot more doing their first Half Ironman distance races in 2010.....

YOU ALL ROCK!!!!

We are going to have a blast.....enjoy the journey....

Thanks!

I do spend some time in the cycling classes.  And, I often disregard the instructor to keep an eye on my heartrate, like you mentioned earlier.  It is hard when its a likeable instructor and she's doing a great job of motivating, but I can usually keep it under control.

I'm excited to get to know everyone and tackle this together!

Woohoo!!  Welcome to all of the new members!  I think as you read thru the pages I did post an intro of myself but here's a quick run down:

47 yrs old, Married, two kids (DD 9 and DS 11), 3 horses, 4 dogs, 2 cats (and a partridge in a pair tree J/K).  I live in Saint Gabriel, LA (outskirts of Baton Rouge).  Runner in 2008 until knee surgery caused me to look at cross training, WAEF and Diane convinced me that Tri's were the way to go.  With LRR's and the groups help I started swimming in Jan and finished my first Tri (OWS) in March.  5 Tris, 1 Dua, 1 HM, and a 10k later and now training for NOLA HIM in April.

I ride a 2000 QR Te Quilo (bought the frame and the parts and had a mechanic assemble), at 6 ft with 650's it looks rather interesting.

BTW, I like to ask a lot of questions and love it when the thread is busy!

I'm excited to be a part of this group and get my butt back in gear with training.  I'm looking forward to reading all of 113 previous pages (OY.) and to get to know all of you better.   I have tons of questions and can't wait to delve into the wealth of your combined training and racing experience.. just not tonight, need some sleep-older kidlet came down with a wicked ear infection, which equals mama has not slept much last few nights... mama tired.

Wow, you weren't kidding about the 114 pages.  This is going to be awesome.  Thanks for letting me in the group.  1 page down, 113 more to read!

I also enjoy spinning inside.  We do the Les Mill's RPM class.  Some instructors are bikers but most aren't at my club.  I don't always follow the routine but ride in the back row so that I am not a distraction to other riders that want to.  Before Les Mills, we had instructors that prided themselves on doing 50 jumps in a class.  That really turned me off and I would just settle into an aero position and ride.

Woo Hoo! What a group!!! I'm SUPER excited about joining, learning, and sharing with everyone - mostly learning and getting back into the swing of workouts and sports, as this is my first Tri and first racing event in - wait for it - 12 years! Before this time, I was actively involved in numerous sports, including university crew, for most of my life. In the last 12 years, let work, family, travel and health issues provide an excuse Now, I'm getting back on track and excited to join a new sport again!

I'm starting on the 114 pages of wicked wisdom from the group today.
I've been getting into gear, training planning this weekend.
I am checking out the Triathlon Geek 14 week Olmpic Tri plan - anyone ever tried this one? i'll need to adjust it to fit my timeline (6 months) and couch potato status right now, but wondering if anyone has ever tried this?

Goal 2010 -
Finish 1st Olympic Tri at S. Maui: June 13
Become Strong open water swimmer - will figure out what this means in detail.
Still looking for a mini or sprint to do inbetween - any suggestions/recommendations?

Can't wait to cross the finish line!

It looks like everyone is settling in nicely....and getting along....(Playing headmaster there....haha).

How about we kick off January with our Ironman challenge.....what this means....like last year is to cover Ironman distance in one month....we are behind a couple of days but will catch up quickly....you are welcome to count what you have done since Jan 1.

So here is your goal (these are cumulative during the month of January - not in one workout):

total 2.4 miles of swimming - that's about 3900 meters or 4200 yards

total 112 miles biking - if you are inside you should estimate 15-16 miles per hour

total 26.2 miles of running....

who's in????????   No prizes, no worries, no pressure, no time goals....just cover the distance......

Who's in?

Some admin stuff for everyone.

Be sure you report ALL finish lines for 2010 (noobs - we keep a running count on page 1).  Has anyone completed any races yet?

Also, give me your data in the following format.  I am going to update the roster for 2010 on page 1 so we can keep up with the peeps.

Here's the layout:  name - age - hometown - 2009 A Races - 2010 A Races

for example: Bryan - 50 - San Antonio, TX - IMAZ, Houston Marathon - IMFL and Texas Independence Relay

You don't have to put 25 A races....just one or two....

Finally, set up a signature with a minimum of your name, your NEXT race with date, and A races....then use this sig on your posts....you do this on settings>personalizations

for example:

Bryan, I'm in!!!!!! Can't wait to start!! Hopefully, my older kidlet will be better by tomorrow and I can go to Lifetime.

To comment on your comment on my intro, I never thought of it is as run-focused, but after I re-read my goals, I guess I am a little? Running has always been my favorite of the three, though I'm nowhere near fast.  It's just something I enjoy the most (and do plan to put a strategy in place this year to improve pace-with your help?).  Half-marathons are comfortable now (so much so that I did one on less than 4 weeks of training after a pregnancy, back in Sept), and a full Marathon is a big, scary beast, so my big goal is to finish Champaign in May and hopefully tackle Chicago in Oct.  As far as time goal... well, here are my thoughts, let me know what you think:  My best Half time was 2:27 (i think), which is about 11 min mile.  My Sept Half was pathetic at close to 13 min mile, but of course, I was carrying extra baby weight (still am, somewhat), no training for over a year other than a few runs in the weeks before the event, so really, I'm just glad I didn't expire on the course.  So, I hope that in the next few months, I can get back to that 11 min mile by Champaign and finish in 5-5:15.  Here is my game plan for that:

3-4 runs a week- obviously, one long run a week, speedwork maybe every couple of weeks? afraid to injure myself.  The rest-maintanence runs. Run-walk-more on that in a minute.

3 classes a week at LF-probably 2 spinning classes and 1 yoga/pilates, so this should take care of my Xtraining.  Main goal here is to get into a consistent routine with Xtraining, since I'm coming off of big.fat.nuthin.  Then, of course, that'll also be a good platform for summer tris.

1-2 swims a week.  Will need to figure out how long I should swim.  Always been a decent swimmer, so never really had a specific swim plan in place and just put in some miles before my Sprints (I know, too vague for racing).

As far as my running.. Jeff Galloway method is the only way I run now.  After my 1st son was born 4 years ago, I started running and developed a huge pain in the knee+inflammation on my shin area (doc thought a fracture).. so, while recovering, I discovered JG and started run/walk method.. I have found it works best for me physically-never problems with shins again-and mentally-focusing on running 4-5 min before I can walk for a minute again is helfpul..  During Half races, I have run variations of ratios - 6-7:1, 3:1 ... and even 1:1 on this last one.  Amazingly, I can speak from experience, the time does.not.suffer.at.all when you take these walk breaks.. So, I stick with this.  Perhaps, when I drop down to my goal of 140 lbs (eeky 192 lbs right now), I may consider mixing in full runs, but for now, this works beautifully.

Ok, novel is over. Thanks for reading.  What do you (and all the rest of you pros out there) think of this strategy? DO i have a decent shot at the 5 hours on May 1?

Put the info here and I will copy and paste it....let's try that first....by the way, this is for "old" as well as noobs....

Lena - I Jeff Galloway every run I do except for a 5k Vdot test....I am a devout follower and am TOTALLY in favor of walk breaks to SPEED UP....yes, my times are better when I walk.  There are "those" who believe walking is for wimps and they think you haven't "done" a marathon unless you have run the whole thing.....this is a PILE OF CRAP....I covered the same 26.2 miles so kiss my @$$......(getting off soapbox).  When asked if I walked during the Ironman marathon I simply smiled and said "yes" and then I asked the all knowing questioner if he had ever coasted on a bike to which he said "of course"....I then explained that walking required effort while coasting required none so his coast was much more of a "cheat" than my walk.....enough said....here's the bottom line....when I can get to the finish line more quickly by taking walk breaks I am going to walk....that is IT!!!  Also, I am slow....I have a body built for comfort, not speed .... also has been previously known as "body by donut"....so I just get it done....walk, run, stumble, crawl, whatever.....I think your 5 hour goal is doable if it really matters...just be sure to enjoy the journey....sometimes we let silly time goals get in the way of celebrating the epic journey we are part of on a given day.  I would much rather help someone get through a difficult day, talk with spectators along the entire course and thank all the volunteers and police than hit some silly time goal that means nothing.....Remember, the individual finishing at the bottom of his/her class in medical school is still called "doctor" and the finisher at 16:59:59 is still called Ironman....

Bryan, wow. Thank you for that.  I have a new-found respect for you, and I just met you. Brownie points, dude!  You have just said EVERYTHING i feel about walking and running and finishing.

I was actually coming back to post, "After I thought about what I posted, I think I should have asked if you think my plan will be good enough to finish, NOT to finish in 5 hours."  Honestly, I just want to survive Champaign.  If, no wait...WHEN I do, I will then set a time goal for Chicago, which will be 6 months out and will be a realistic race for a time-finish.

As far as walk breaks, I was nodding my head silly reading your post.  On another online board I'm a member of, we have (an always dying) thread for ppl who train for races.  I'm practically the only one who ever actually races... there are girls, though, who will do an occasional 5K (like, once a year) and take such pride in saying, "I RAN the entire 3 miles today." I always quietly chuckle and think... "really? good for you.... well, I ran/walked 13.1 today." case in point.

By the way, I just realized I threw a bunch of numbers at you, weight-wise, and forgot to mention I'm 5'9" (yes, I'm still fat, but a bit less fat, seemingly, because of my height lol).

Lena - I need all the brownie points I can get....here's a little more and this goes for everyone.

Endurance sports are about managing resources.  Simply put, you gotta have gas in the tank.  That's gas in the fuel tank (calories), gas in the hydration tank (water), gas in the electrolyte tank (sodium, etc), gas in the fitness tank (training), gas in the brain tank (don't do stupid stuff on race day).  Then, race day is about managing resources.  Read that sentence again.

Race day is about managing resources.

See, if you try to race a marathon at your 5k pace then one of two things - you sandbagged your 5k pace and didn't run it to the best of your ability OR you will NOT get through the marathon....it just won't work....read Jack Daniels (not the whiskey dude) if you want to understand pacing at a Phd level.  Likewise, you cannot ride a 112 mile ride at your 40k time trial pace - just can't be done....right?  So, what you have to figure out (here is the secret to marathons, ultras, ironman, etc) is how to manage your resources.  Sure you have to do the training but once that is in the barn, then it is about execution.  On my arms at Ironman Arizona was written, "BELIEVE" and "EXECUTE" and then there was a picture I drew of a stick man in a box (to tell me to stay in my box) - here's the quote for that one "I am not going to wear anyone else's medal so I am not going to race anyone else's race."  When I stood on the banks of Tempe Town Lake I was calm - yes calm - I knew it was about execution - fitness was a given.

So what all of us shall work on this year is the management of those resources.  Your mind can accomplish whatever you dream.  You just have to manage your way through it.  Here's my plan for Arizona:  Can I swim 30 minutes non-stop?  Yes - then do that twice and then swim another 20-30 minutes....enjoy.  Can I ride 19 miles?  Yes - okay, do that 6 times (you do three out and backs so there are 6 segments).  Can I run a 4 mile loop and a 5 mile loop?  Yep, then do each one three times....and there it is I heard Mike Reilly say, "Bryan Reece, San Antonio, TX, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!!!!!!!

So it is just about management of resources.....by the way, you will learn more of my history as we go but in January of 2007 I was told by a doctor that I had to take better care of myself or die - my choice - I would make one of them.  You can see which one I chose (albeit maybe to an extreme).  At that point I had not run more than to the refrigerator in 25 years (I ran 3 miles at age 22 about 3 or 4 times) and I rode a mountain bike about 4 miles on the road once when I was about 26....that's it.  I had raced sailboats as a hobby for years but that was really more of an excuse to drink than physical exertion.  I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, two swollen discs (L4-L5, and L5-S1) was 47 years old and according to Steve (my doc) I was a heart attack - he couldn't believe I hadn't had one already....

You can do anything.

Woohoo!!!! PR distance for continuous swim!  Little over 1500 meters and at a good time (for me).  For those joining and catching up I just learned to swim Jan 2009 (could not swim 25 yards without stopping).  I am not a natural swimmer and its been a tough battle.  I have deep respect for those who think nothing of a 1000 meter warm-up.  Biking and running are much more of my speed but I have come to enjoy the swim.  Best thing about today was that when I hit my distance I stopped (per plan) but could have kept going.

Sig updated, didn't put my name in it as it would be a bit redundent.

I'm in for the January IM distance.  It'll be a good way to help me keep my month a little more balanced.

Do you think counting 10 miles for a 45 minute spin class would be fair?  I usually lose a few minutes to warm up and cool down, so we probably get in 40 minutes of riding.
