newbz - 2010-09-29 1:36 PM dirk i'm sticking around so long as i dont get run off for needless reasons. As far as the groups go, i would highly encourage anyone interested in joining a group next time around to try something else out, find a mentor that is totaly dif from what i have to offer (i recommend this to athletes with coaches as well from time to time). its always a good thing to get some dif ideas/inputs/backgrounds, and part of what makes a forum like this great.

I was thinking the same thing too.  I will def be hanging around until the new season but I greatly appreciate all the advice you have given and I made the comment to my wife that your advice, when I have followed it, has made faster in any/all the disciplines.

Edit:
BTW, "I'll be leaving on a jet plane" first thing in the morning headed for Cali.  I am not surer how much contact I will be having while ther but I will def be in the training zone.  I am way to close to the marathon to back anything down.  One good thing is that this week is a recovery week.  But starting Sunday its back to the smashmouth training.

Hi everyone.  I was off on vacation for a week - well kind of a vacation.  We were on Oahu with my wife's son and children.  We rented a house in Kailua and spent most of the time taking the kids to the various attractions, etc.   I got out for short runs 3 times while I was there which was about what I expected.

I've got a 10k race coming up on Sunday and will then be off to the US for 10 days which means no cycling/swimming.  So this is kind of my off season.

This mentor group has been great and I'll be hanging on until the end.   Many thanks to David and to those of you who ended up being the active participants.

x2 - I seriously don't know if I could of kept going without the support this group (and BT in general) has given me. I am sooo excited for next year!  I just have to wait 8 more months til another race. Cry  Thanks everyone - however, I will stick around for awhile longer - can't get rid of me quite yet!

So, haven't been posting for awhile (or working out) as my work schedule has just gone nuts.  I am in charge of planning a 3 day conference at the end of October and the work has gone from a few hours a week to close to 40. Hopefully, I will be able to bring things down a notch soon and get back to doing the things I enjoy.  Especially since time is running out up here in Wyoming for non-snow activities!

David and Jackie - can't wait to read your reports.  David sounds like you got the shaft from a few people - that sucks!

Hey guys....my apologies for lack of posting as of late.  Traveling a bunch for work, starting up a new project and buying the house have taken over in full force.  We close (cross your fingers) on the house on Monday.  So far there have been a few hickups, but nothing major.

I'll just throw this in there because I feel like I need to say it.  David, you're a great dude.  The time you take out of your busy schedule to help us out every week has meant a great deal to me and the rest of the group.  You do what you need to do and I will gladly support it.

Onward....I hired a coach.  She is actually the lady who runs our tri club.  I am definitely excited and have signed up for one more race this fall.  A half marathon on November 7th.  Because my run is my weak link, I will be focussing primarily on that.  As of right now, my left foot is sore from my race on September 11th.  I somehow managed to mess it up a bit.  It's sore random times during the day.  I need to get active again and see how it feels.  My runs start tomorrow, so I'm interested to see how the foot feels during and after.  It'll be an easy one just to feel things out.

Congrats to everyone on their races the last couple weeks.  Looks like you all have been making some serious dents in PR's and overall course records....that is just awesome.

What are everyone's plans for the fall until the snow arrives!!!???

My last tri will be Oct 23 and it will be my 1st Oly distance. After that, I'm going to take a break from the biking and swimming and focus on running, toning up, and losing the last 10lbs extra pounds.

I'm going to try pilates like I talked about with Robin and do some weight training. We now have Weight Watchers meetings at my work on Weds and some of my coworkers are doing it, so I joined just to give myself that extra push/accountability (I've been losing weight on my own over the summer, but I lost most of my weight with WW in the past so I know it works for me)

I'll be doing the HM in Dec, so Jamie and I have still been running together and I've gotten back on track with running on my own. I'm actually getting up at 4:45am 2 days a week and running before I have to get all the kids up and ready for school/daycare at 6am. It's actually not as bad as I thought it would be

Good luck with the house - I will keep my fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly!

For the next month or so - I plan to try and up my running some (it seems to be me my weak link) and will continue to maintain the run until early spring where I will up it again in preparation for my first half marathon.  Hubby has agreed to run it with me - so very exciting. I will try and get a few more bikes in before it gets too cold - been pondering jorge's winter cycling program (it sounds painful though).  I want to start back up with yoga and pilates and see if I can get some of my flexibility back. Once there is a decent snow base (around xmas) will start up with x-country skiing (both nordic and skate). Oh yeah - and I have picked out a new mountain bike (Santa Cruz Juliana) - if she comes before the snow I will spend as much time on her as possible! It sucks when there are so many things to do with so little time!

My plans for fall is to run a half marathon on Nov 7th.  But if the next 4 weeks go well, I'll pursue a Dec 12th marathon as well.  Right now I'm on a marathon plan, and the bigger mileage weeks are coming up...so I'll just have to wait and see how I hold up.  I'll be quick to pull the plug if anything doesn't feel right...but so far I've been feeling really good.

I have ambitious, possibly over-ambitions plans for fall/winter.  I want to try to ramp up my running mileage to 30-40 miles/week, do Jorge's cycling program and continue to improve on my swimming.   The running will be a slow ramp up and I am also thinking of doing a half marathon in the Mar or April timeframe.

Besides the obvious marathon that I have talked about for the past month or so I am planning a 4 mile Thanksgiving day race and drilling and working on the swim, plus I would like to get some tough stuff on the bike done too.  I could be getting a little to ambitious.

I found that even at my young age, I could only handle one big goal at a time.  When I was pounding out 700 miles per month on the bike...I couldn't handle much more than 35 miles per month running.  Likewise, now that I'm starting to churn out 120+ miles per month running, I can't handle much more than 300 miles per month on the bike.

I suppose it's something your body will slowly adapt to over time...but it makes IM seem quite far away for me.

I got a nice and easy 7 mile run near/on the beach done yesterday.  I don't get to do this very much in Indiana.......Not too much ocean front property there.  It was an incredible run because I could hear the waves crashing the whole time.  I say I like running at home a bit better.  The people here are not as friendly as at home.  There a number of people that I passed that would give. a head nod or say good morning or anything in reply.  Kinda weird to me, being from the mid-west.  I have a couple of runs left out here, then it's back to the routine at home.  I am def not cmplaining though, I am anxious for the race to get here.

Jonathan- Good luck with the house.
David- Good luck with the job.
Dan- Great goals! You and Robin are making me wonder if I should continue the biking over the winter

Just finished running with Jamie. We wanted to do 8 miles, but ended up cutting it down to 6. My husband went camping this weekend with the boys, so I'm home alone with my daughter. So, I took her along for this morning's run in the jogging stroller. Around mile 5, she had had enough and let us know so quite loudly. But understandably, sitting in a stroller for an hour is tough if you're wide awake and want to move. Also, this was only her 3rd time in the jogger- I usually take my 3 year instead (He loves "racing" around the neighborhood).

Unfortunatley, I won't be able to bike tomorrow, but I'm looking to do another run with the jogger. I might try and do 2 shorter runs (4 miles) instead of a long one so she will be happier.

Jackie,

You should continue biking over the winter - at least a couple times a week for maintenance.   If I could only change one thing from my last year's worth of training it would be to have gotten my bike trainer two months earlier.   It's boring as all heck, but it gives you a very good workout.

I just finished up my last race of the year - the local 10k with the long ups and downs.   My time was 47:11 which is a PB for me and I ended up 38/189.  My previous PB was a 48:04 nine years ago.

I think my race strategy worked pretty well.  I was aiming to hit 5 min/km on the uphills and go as fast as my little legs will take me on the downhills.    I wore my HRM and am including a couple of data shots below (courtesy of a software package called SportTracks).   The zones on the the heart rate graph are generated by the software and don't align with mine.   All things considered, I'm very happy with this race and am sure that I can go faster if I spend more time running.

very nice looking race!!

And its always a double bonus to be breaking times you set 9 years younger!!
That's a great time on a hilly course.

And agreed with the above comment about biking over the winter, if you can even get in just enough to keep that feeling there its a huge help

Agreed a nice race.  Breaking a 9 year old record would be pretty sweet!  Maybe when I get 9 years older I'll post a 19:00 minute 5k..................NOT!

I agree with the winter bike plan too.  I think at the end of winter last year or whenever the spring mentor group started I still had some rides on the trainer that david gave to do and they kicked my tail but they were well worth the effort.  Right now I have missed 2-3 weeks of swimming and I can't stand the idea of it.  I feel like I am losing everything I worked so hard for last winter.  I have only been swimming once a week since Aug.1 anyway, now zero times in almost 3 weeks is killing me.  def keep the biking going.

nice race dcon!

about to head out for a 15 miler.  My legs feel a little weary as I pushed pretty hard on yesterday's ride.  Hopefully my legs will start to feel better after the first few miles.

AWESOME RACE DAN! Like David & Dirk said, that must feel great to be faster than you were 9 years ago. Not may people can say that.

Ok- you have all convinced me to continue biking in the winter. Riding on a trainer is an easy enough thing to do once the kids are asleep and I can do while watching TV. Man, I thought I was gonna get a break over the winter
