First Ironman and I am a bit confused with all these bags. Especially I am not sure about the special needs bags. Do you actually stop half way and collect your bag while on the bike, load up and start your second 56miles?

I guess for the bike, I'll put in some extra tubes/C02s (to be safe), 2nd half of my hammer gels, couple of iced HEED drinks and what else?

What do people put in their running special needs bag? There is nutrition handed out all the way along the run so I'm not sure.

I'm running with a run belt though not loaded with bottles (2x on the first half).  I'll have 2x 8oz fuel bottles with EFS, extra bottle of thermotab salt tablets (just in case other bottle dropped or pills get wet), 16oz bottle of chicken broth, EFS liquid shot.  Contemplating fun size candy bars.  I know some people will keep a change of socks or will include vaseline/aquafor for blisters if they're not carrying it already.  As for nutrition, less solids the better since they typically don't digest well on the run.  In the end, use what you've practiced with.

As for the bike, you might want some "real" food.  I guess it depends on your stomach and, again, go with what you've been practicing.  I'll eat a mojo bar, 1/2 a PB bagel, maybe a candy bar and extra bottle of concentrated.

I from time to to time pack a special needs bag - Never picked up the bike bag - however i have picked up my run bag once (i put a light weight sweater in for IMFL, tossed it but it was there if I needed it)

if it's something you can't live without take it with you - there will be nutrition and fluids aplenty. - one less stress worrying about the how to get it and do I really need it.

I don't think iced anything will be very cool by the time it makes it out to the course.

I am thinking about having chocolate milk in the bike special needs bag with ice packs.  Will they allow that?  That chocolate milk worked out perfect for me during the training rides, stopped at the Richards store everytime and downed that choco milk.  That did it for me.

I'll be putting an extra pair of socks in mine. All my run nutrition will be in my T2 bag.

For the bike - I recommend putting "just to be safe" items in there; spare tube, CO2, favorite nutrition/candy bar, gatorade, etc.; make it an optional stop if you need it.

For the run - same thing - change of socks; other food.  Again if you don't need it, don't stop.

If you get lucky a volunteer may have it out already for you otherwise you will need to stop by the bin with your number range and then a volunteer will fish it out.  Pack them with the notion you may not get the items back; usually they are dumped back out on Sunday after the race for anyone to pick up.

A long time lurker of this thread too -- I started reading it when it was around 10 pages or so.... Coming to Texas for the first time from California. Driving over from the San Francisco bay area. Eeck.

Anyone have any recommendations on good BBQ places? I'd imagine I could eat an entire cow by the time it's time to drive home.

dodgersmom - 2011-05-13 11:53 AM For anyone who ordered the GPS tracking, do you know how people access it? I want to send out a note to friends and family with instructions.

I used one for IMFL.  When you receive the tracking device, it will have instructions on how to use it and also instructions on how people can track you.  It was very easy to use and my family was able to track me with it all day so that they could find me on the course.

How well does it work with iphones and other smartphones? I played with their website a little bit and it didn't seem to be mobile-friendly.

rudys is a gas station that has some of the best bbq around.  It was made famous in the Austin area then grew around central Texas and now one store in Houston.  If you are coming from Houston on 45 it is a few miles before the woodlands.

Rear ended pretty hard on the way home here in Austin... Lady on phone, not paying attention.
Ended up bouncing against the car in front of me - chain reaction - 4 cars damaged.

Car had to be towed

Here's hoping no lasting soreness/whiplash -- argh... Feeling ok now though.

At least I got a nice hour OWS swim at lunch today...

Wanna speculate how it will work out for you while running 26.2 miles in the 90 degree heat after riding your bike for 112 miles.

I'd scrap that idea.  Dairy, protein, 90 degree heat & 12 hours of exertion is a recipe for disaster.  Feel free to drink a whole gallon if you're in the M40-44 AG though. Tongue out

That sounds like a recipe for disaster. With a 3 loop course you increase your chances of one of us having to watch you vomit up curdled chocolate milk on the run.

Found this video on Slowtwitch and thought it was funny!

I speak from experience.  It wasn't chocolate milk but I decided during a 70.3 that I could eat or drink whatever I darn well wanted because it had never been an issue during training.  The result was disastrous.  I threw up more times than a freshman at his first frat party and spent 10 hours in the hospital, which included 6 IV bags.  I still finished the race though.

Had my first IMTX nightmare...It started with me forgetting to get my packet, so I rode my bike to registration, well it turns out that I forgot to air up my latex tubed tires and that resulted in misshaped tires. THEN, I forgot to turn in my bike and run gear, so I had to rush and turn them in but noticed that I forgot my GU at home

The hard part is over - training complete, toe the line, go....

Ok so - now you've been in the water for about 40 minutes, about half through, and in a rhythm ... thinking this ain't so bad (and it ain't).
