Skinny Arm Brian - 2011-10-25 10:06 AM

So I am driving down the road with my daughters yesterday. Very carefully- because a cop is following right behind me.  I was getting nervous as he pulled into the grocery store lot behind me, watched me get out, then pulled up behind my car.  He says to me, "I have been running your plate for the past 2 miles, but could not find your name."  I am starting to shake by now.  Then he asks if I am the guy that he almost took my hat in the changing tent before the run at IM.  We had similar hats form same local tri store, sat down next to each other in the tent, and live in the same town.  After a few minutes of talk in transition, I hit the road and never thought much about him again.  So, he sees my 140.6 sticker and chases me through my hometown.

New training partner, with a funny story of meeting.  Good thing is he has a lake to swim at for next year with a 1.2 mile course.

Awesome.  That's funny right there.

Tim, boy, what did you have?

I have hernia surgery and colonoscopy in the morning.  On liquids since last night.  Get  to cleanse when I get home.  Oh boy!  Good part is I'll be healed and good as new in a couple of weeks so I can look forward to some serious training from Dec. on.

Double whammy!! good luck with the surgery.

Congrats tim, post a pic.

Bad news today.  Never fear.  I will fight like hell  I posted this on Face Book.

I heard the news today...again. That book I am writing about going from fat man to Ironman and beating cancer along the way just added a new chapter.  I had no idea I took cancer along for the 140.6-mile ride at IM Wisconsin on Sept. 11.  I thought the event was a celebration of being 5 years clean as a matter of fact.

But, the colonoscopy was not routine today as it turned out.  Pronounced free of prostate cancer in June, I was diagnosed Oct. 26 with colon cancer.  The doctor found a tumor the size of a walnut that has been there for some time, he said.  Perhaps as long as 5 years, he said.  The irony is I was supposed to get a colonoscopy in 2006 when the PSA tests revealed my prostate cancer.  Prostate cancer absorbed all my attention.

Dr. Mike Young said a biopsy will confirm his diagnosis.  He's seen enough of these to know what it is.  He said, "If it looks like a duck and it walks like a duck..."

As I came the fog about 11 this morning after the hernia operation and colonoscopy, my wife Kathy said simply, "You've got colon cancer." The doctor had come to the waiting room and told her.  He was gentle with her, but told her what he had seen.  I was very foggy.  I asked, "Am I dreaming?"  She said, "No, this isn't a dream."

The doctor came to the recovery room and said that he would have taken out 20 percent of my big bowel today but we hadn't been prepared so he waited so we could discuss it.   Appointment is Thursday to set surgery.  He'll take it out along with 20 percent of my colon he says I don't need.  My first thought was, "I'll be lighter on the bike!"

Four to 7 days in the hospital should do it and he thinks the low end for me because of my fitness.

Whether it spread remains to be seen.  We'll judge from lymp nodes taken during surgery.  We'll work from there.

Lance said, "You are in for the fight of your life."  He meant people with cancer.  But I say, "Yes, you are in for the fight of your life, cancer, and you are about to get your kicked one more time."

I had a friend who died of cancer.  He said, "Never ask, Why me?  Ask, Why not me?"  I am good with that.  He also said that if it had to happen to someone, he was glad it was happening to him because he knew a God who would see him through it and so many people do not.  I am also good with that.

It is never the problems we face.  It is how we face our problems.

There is no way God would cause bad things to happen to any of his children.  He is absolute love.  He cannot do bad things.  They are not in his nature.  People who think otherwise, who wonder why god would "make someone sick" don't know him like I do.  I never made it to medical school.  But I know enough biology to know that this kind of thing just happens.  Bad DNA, that's all.

We had a visit from a chaplain in training before the surgery.  She asked if she could pray for me.  I said yes.  She asked for what should she pray.  I said, I never pray for outcomes.  It is about praying for strength.  And that's what I received, power to meet life on life's terms no matter what those terms are.  That is the key to happiness for me.  No fear because I know the truth of what my friend Frank said before his death recently, "It's all right in the end and if it's not all right, it's not the end."

I know that truth as taught to me by people like young Blake Hall, who died of bone cancer and Rich Manzella, who died of cancer of his pancreas. It is the truth found in the words to the LiveSTRONG anthem, Maybe Tonight, Maybe Tomorrow.  "It may break my body, but it can never break my soul."  Cancer can never have the ultimate victory.  That belongs to people who cling to God.

Lance said, You are in for the fight of your life - again.  And I say, Yes, cancer you are.   Knowledge is Power.  Unity is strength. Attitude is everything. Thanks to Kathy and my friends and a God who loves me no matter what, prepare to get your kicked - again.

I'm going to do a couple of half IMs...Racine maybe if I can get ready...depends on whether post-op treatment is needed.  There is a new half IM distance by Rev 3 in Wisconsin Dells later and then Branson in late September, which I'm betting will be a sure thing. I plan to be in Madison to root my BT buddy Tim on the course.

Bit the bullet and signed up for a marathon. Tim / Brian I will be picking your brains.

As far as everybody racing together, I think we should all pile into NYC for Dave and KC's IM. We could have a 'training / support' weekend. Wink

I totally know what you guys are talking about.  I was just feeling a little under motivated before the baby was coming.  I knew we were going into be induced on Monday and i have been reading the Fink book and just wanted to do some of the workouts.  I actually enjoyed doing it for one week.  Might do it again sometime in the near future but for now just am eating all the food evewryone is bringing over and sitting my lazy butt on the coach with my new son - haha

Skinny Arm Brian - 2011-10-25 9:58 AM

Also, I agree with Dave about your IM training.  It seems really early to get into the strict regiment.  I was on the verge of burnout in late July after starting in January.

Hey Team.

Just checking in. Hope everyone is doing ok. I managed to do a few things this past week - a bit of swimming, a short bike yesterday and a run. Still struggling a with this cold - started in the throat, moved to the head and setled in the chest - 7 days in and hoping it moves out soon. Scott - FYI - been using the Neti Pot (love that thing) LOL.

I don't think I will do much today however - probably just a bit of curling practice.

Take care everyone.

KC

Thank you all for the words of encouragement in response to my rant.  I knew that the people here would understand how frustrating it was!

I went for my second post-race run today.  Ran 40 minutes steady (around 3 miles - I was trying to keep it fairly slow and steady).  I was feeling great, and completed the run with no walk breaks; in fact, I wanted to just keep going (but the need to go grocery shopping was stronger). I don't think I'm fully recovered yet, and wouldn't want to go too far/fast, but it was a good step towards getting back to long distances.

Brian - great story about the cop! I wonder if he knew how nervous he was making you.

KC  - what spot do you curl in? (i.e. lead, second, skip, etc.) Oh, and I'm impressed that you are using a neti pot - those things scare me.

Tim  - congratulations - he's beautiful!

Scott - I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't been said already.  Your news sucks, but you have a great attitude and I know you will get through this with flying colours.  Sending you all kinds of good thoughts for your recovery and the very best of luck for Thursday.

Good Morning Team.

I hope all is well.

Heather - on my current team I am the lead - I curl with 3 guys in there early 20's who are very good. I hve to tell you though, I am in better shape then all of them so they need me at the front end doing a lot of the sweeping because they can't handle it LOL. Tough sport though, strained a quad on the weekend practicing but on the mend.

Wanted to run yesterday but have to rest the quad for a few days and still waiting for this cold to go away. I did however get to swim a bit yesterday and may try to do more tonight.

Be safe everyone.

Hey Team.

OK - weird question for everyone. During my past several swims I have been experiencing a strange numbness in my right hand pinky finger as I get farther into my swim sets. Has anyone ever had this?

Thanks.

I don't think I got that feeling, but during the first few of my straight 2500 sets I started feeling soreness in my hand.  After swimming that distance and longer in the following weeks I did not feel that any longer.  I would only be concerned if A) it remains numb after you get out of the pool and B) if it continues during each swim training coming up.

Not a doctor, only a guy that is very in tune with the aches and pains in my body from 1000's of miles of training.  Hope it goes away very quickly

Hey Team.

OK - weird question for everyone. During my past several swims I have been experiencing a strange numbness in my right hand pinky finger as I get farther into my swim sets. Has anyone ever had this?

Thanks.

KC

I don't think I got that feeling, but during the first few of my straight 2500 sets I started feeling soreness in my hand.  After swimming that distance and longer in the following weeks I did not feel that any longer.  I would only be concerned if A) it remains numb after you get out of the pool and B) if it continues during each swim training coming up.

Not a doctor, only a guy that is very in tune with the aches and pains in my body from 1000's of miles of training.  Hope it goes away very quickly

Thanks Brian - going to go see my physio guy about it in the morning. I have been doing a bit of research on line and some sites point to the ulnar nerve (funny bone nerve) as a possible cause. It is a real weird feeling - not painful, just a numbness that seems to last even when I am out of the pool now (like right now even though it is faint). Hopefully we can come up with a cause (crappy swim stroke no doubt) and some physio and a better stroke to make it go away.

KC

PS - something tells me I may be seeing my team of health care professionals a bit more often over the next several months Yell

Hey Team.

Ulnar nerve impingement - physio for 2 weeks - ice, stretch, ice, stretch, ice, stretch repeat....................... LOL. Going to mix in a bit of tens along the way as well. Guess is that it is caused by repetitive movements (elbow bend and catch during swim). He did say it was good that I did not ignore it because if I had we could have been looking at loss of strength and some long term side effects. Anyway, just thought I would share this info all of you just in case you ever experience it.

Have a great day.

Glad you got that diagnosed.  Along the lines of what Brian mentioned it pays to be in tune with your body and if you don't listen you are going to casue some real damage.  Not trying to mess you up in the head cause I know how you are with your swimming but is there something you are doing in your stroke that is causing this?

Hi RFPers---I have backed off my training and am just doing what I feel like.  I have stepped away from my runs for now and am just riding my bike.  I will jump back into the pool and roads soon.

Hope everyone is doing well!  I just found out about a downsizing at work so my stress level went up a little....but I am always looking for other opportunities so I am not too concerned
