Non-training question:

I'm sitting in the 2nd day of a week-long workshop.  The information is great, but the sitting is KILLING me.  Lunch is catered, so I don't even get to go out for a good stretch over the lunch hour.  Any suggestions????

Oh, I was trying to get a transfer (from my 8th grade teaching position) to a position that opened up at our local high school.  No go.  They chose a younger, male, teacher who is a baseball coach.  Go figure.

I'm just grumpy today Yell

i'd day dream about being off the rest of the summer.   HA!

Good thinking, John.

Kyla's advice was good too.

Or, I could just make random pointless posts on here.

Dan- I hope all is ok.  very scary!

Jayne- I also do small "airplane exercises" like Kyla mentioned.  I have a very hard time sitting for long periods.  I'd also excuse yourself at some point during lunch and take a quick walk.

Question for the group.  After you finish a race or long workout, are you hungry/famished? or can you not eat?  Do you strive to be one over the other?   Do your goals differ between race and training?

For those that haven't seen it, yes, this is RR related. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=446369&posts=5&start=1

It totally depends on the workout.  If it is a high intensity run or race, I can never eat afterwards without causing some serious gut ache for a good portion of the day.  I try to drink water, take my ice bath and then slowly sip Chocolate Milk while I fix a sandwhich.  It is a good 45-60' before I eat solids.  If it's a long ride or a long run, I am usually fairly hungry.  I do the same thing--water/bath and then fix a real meal.  I continue to scarf throughout the day.

Not sure the question about racing and training?  If you mean eat, then I almost NEVER eat for at least 1-2 hours after a race, Sprint to HIM. In the case of IM, I can't eat or drink until the next day.

Visited a doc today and had a chest x-ray, EKG and lung capacity test done.  All results were normal and he said that my lung capacity was 140% compared to the average for my age.   The doc is a runner and could appreciate my concerns.   He cringed when I explained that my tri-suit was really tight around the abdomen area and then proceeded to explain why compressing/restricting my diaphragm was a really bad idea.    I do have acute bronchitis and he guessed it was a result of some damage to my airways that happened during the race and the way I ended up breathing.  Moral of the story: nothing new on race day.  I should have tried swimming and running in that tri-suit.

Hopefully I will be back on the roads in another day or two.

PS, after reading your RR, why do you swim with your face out of the water?

I grew up swimming that way and didn't start learning to swim with my face in the water until about 3 years ago.   I know it is more efficient to swim with my face in the water, but until I'm comfortable doing it in a crowd, I'm going to stick with the approach that ensures I can breathe easily and allows me to sight with 100% accuracy (I need that more for swimming around the people that can't swim straight than I do for seeing the buoys).

I know of at least one stud racing this weekend and it's going to be quite a show!  Anyone else ready to give it 110%?  If so, spill the details!

If you're not racing, how're you holding up so far this season?  mentally? physically?  what do you need help with?

I'm racing this weekend!!  It's a Sprint (a national qualifier) and it will be the first race that's a repeat for me.  My plan is to CRUSH my time from last year!!!  It's a 440yd swim, 13.5 mi. bike, and a 3.6 mi. run.  My plan is to go easy and steady on the swim, push the bike just a little (it's a pretty fast course), and then "run" the run.  I've been working on some strategies to help keep my focus on the run and I'm anxious to try them out and see how it works. Basically, it's a "mantra" that I made up and memorized that I repeat (in my head) over and over and over.  Hubby thinks I'm nuts.

Trevor, let the Kegels begin......day 3 of sitting on my a$$!  Going to try to slip out and go for a swim over lunch.  Tomorrow and Friday out workshop group is traveling to Chicago.  I'm going to have to be super careful about my diet while we're away.

Racing this weekend?  How about racing everyday of next week?

My 10 day stage race starts for me on Friday.  I am racing with the Category 3's for this Omnium to help one guy on the team that is going for the overall Cat 3 points leader jersey.  Kind of hoping I don't just end on holding on to the back of the Peloton for dear life everyday, but our team leader/coach assures me that I will have no issues (I usually race as a Cat 4).

This is the first ever multi-day stage race for me.  The plan currently has me racing for sure on Fri, Sat, Sun, and Monday and then the team is going to re-evaluate if we need to rest some legs to help us close out the race stronger than other teams.  Wed is another Road Race and they are worth double points, so I may be able to sit out on Tuesday to allow me to help more on Wed.  All this team strategy is very interesting to me.  It will be really interesting to see how the legs recover between races.  Should be fun?

Our usual group ride last night had 3 pros from Kenda/5-hour Energy pro cycling team along, originally from the area, back in town for this race.  Man are those guys smooth.......  and Fast!

No racing for me this weekend.  I have a charity ride Saturday morning for the local child advocacy center, then my son's first birthday party that afternoon.

Physically and mentally I am holding up well.  My foot issues seem to have vanished and I'm working through sore hamstrings from yard work this past weekend.  Going to try another bike ride and possibly a run this afternoon after 24 hours of rest.

I could use some helping finding/developing a training plan for the rest of this year, or at least through my Oly in Sept and HM in November.  I used the BT plan for sprints last year, but I don't feel like I was adequately prepared looking back on my first race.  I have looked at the BT plans for the Oly and also for the HIM, and feel like I should be training somewhere in between them.  I am open to suggestions and can provide more thoughts/concerns/details if necessary.  I just don't want to ramble on incessantly here.

Good luck to Chet, Jayne & Dino this weekend and throughout the next week!

No racing for me either, unless you consider zooming out the door to Minocqua on Friday for a long weekend an event!

After a few too many stomach issues, I am actually testing new bike and ride formulas and increased level of CHOs and H20 for IM. Still a work in progress and waiting for an actual 100m ride and longer run to know for sure I have "hit it" right.Wink

From Chrissie's book:

There is a lot of repetitive activity in an athlete's life, particularly in ironman, and you need to learn to handle it.  The best way of improving your capacity to endure boredom is to endure boredom.  Spend time training on your own and challenge your mind to stay focused. ...You should maintain the same level of concentration in training as you would when racing.  It's no use imagining you will miraculously develop that focus on race day. It won't happen, and you will have neglected a fundamental part of your program.  You wouldn't go into a race without any physical training, so why would you go in without any mental?

Food for thought
