Hey, as far as the transitions go, you just started your practice for your next IM. One thing about you, you will finish and finish strong.

  • Now that your "tri" season is over, you can start for next year. Any run races going on up there this time of year or is it getting to cold?

Karl thanks and while I wasn't thrilled about having to do the swim yesterday I am sort of glad we did it. Like I said it wasn't much swimming, more like being carried down the beach to the swim finish. Overall it was a fun event. I do need to do some more sprints next year and I need to improve my transitions. I think I left all common sense at home yesterday when it came to my transitions.

I have been thinking about IMMT and when should I start training for it. The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards waiting until January to start. I think I am going to do the 14 week outseason program by EN and then their 20 week Ironman training plan. There are plenty of 5K and 10K races as well coming up so I am two 10K's I signed up for in Nov. I will probably look to do a few more. I think I'll just do enough swim, bike and run to stay in shape and keep my weight down. I also want to do as much mtn biking as I can before Jan. I need a break my brain and body is fried from all the training I did this year and just the whole IM experience in general. I'm just gonna take it easy and have fun until the end of the year.

Tony sounds like an eventful race! Congratulations on finishing a tri race of every distance this season. I would think it would be really hard to go from IM training to sprint. Two totally different race strategies.

I've gotta brag on my local running friends. Tiffs husband and another close friend of mine (one of the girls who wants to race a HIM next summer) both ran Chicago marathon today. Tiffs husband ran a 2:59 and Laura ran 3:02 and managed to negative split! Holy smokes! Nothing but super hard work to thank as they train together, get up and out the door by 5:00 no excuses. Laura was running 80 miles a week in her peak training weeks. Craziness .

    Tony

It sounds like you were able to have a good time at the race regardless of your placement.  Placement isn't why most of us race, but I do have to admit I enjoy placing.  I enjoy the competition, the limits I can push my body too and meeting new people and seeing old friends I've made through triathlon.  Your race sounds like that was the most important factor, and that in itself makes for an outstanding race.

Your performance seems good to me.  That swim may have been rough but is it a PR for a 440 swim?  That in itself can be a great take away.  Who cares if it was with current pushing you.  T1, well I did wonder if you got lost on your way up to the transition area or maybe ran by Starbucks.  I would love to have a challenging bike course to do.  There are very few hills around here to worry about climbing so my races are more about trying to keep from crashing as I bow through a corner, which you all know can be dangerous for me.

And, Congrats on the 8:30 splits!!!  That's a great accomplishment!!

    Dina,

It appears there are a couple of great runners over your way.  3 hour marathoning is no joke!!!  I used to think I would like to be able to go for that goal, but that is so much running and I don't want to give up my triathlon training.  80 MPW running is awesome too!!  I wold love to hit that just once in my training just to say I did it.

    ____________

I've had a good weekend of training finally.  I hit 121 miles on the bike over my 3 days in a row riding and I was able to get 2 swims in on Friday and Saturday totaling 5700 yards.  I finally feel like I was doing something active and constructive.  Tonight I'm back to PT for the night and by the time I'm done with that and back home I'll be out of training time.  I can't wait to be done with PT!  I really enjoyed my weekend of training for a change.  And my knee feels great!  Hopefully I'm nearly back on track.

Dina congrats to both of your friends, holy cow those are smokin fast times. I had a friend run the Hartford Marathon this weekend and she PR'd and BQ'd with a 3:16. Those are only times I can dream about achieving lol. Obviously a lot of hard work involved in being able to do that. The negative splits make it even more impressive.

Dirk I was glad to see you were able to get out and train this weekend following your FB posts. It sounds like you had a great weekend training, glad to see that you are back at it and that your knee is feeling great which is probably the most important thing. You didn't even mention the 5K you did with your family.

Looking backat the race this weekend I think overall I had a good race. I am normally competitive and not that I wasn't trying not be this time I think my mind set was just to have a good time and I did. You're right about the swim I don't think I'll swim faster than that any time soon, I had a really good bike I even beat out alot of my friends so I see how much I have improved and the run for me was great. I don't normally see those numbers when I run. I really do need to improve my transitions and will make that one of my goals for next season.

Definitely take and enjoy the downtime, time away from structure is just as important as the training time.  I have been in the same boat, sorta!  I have been running and actually increasing my MPW, but I have not been on my bike in over a month and almost as long for swimming.  After my race it seemed like work to bike/swim so I just put everything on the shelf.  I am just now starting to get excited about a bike ride, not even close to the swim though.  I think I am going to give it the rest of October for a run focus, which will give me time to enjoy running with the running crew that I missed all summer.  Then after I knock out my last 2 goals of 2013 in November I will return to Tri-specific workouts.  At least that's my thoughts.....

Yeah, and Roch is 49 years old. His last marathon PR was 14 years ago. And 3 years ago he broke his femur running in a 5k. He didn't even know if he would fully recover enough to keep training for marathons. Hows that for a NEVER GIVE UP attitude?!!!!!!!!!!!! I just hope I'm still running when I'm 49 . Laura said she felt so good on the last mile she was passing people all over the place and it was her fastest split at 6:40 pace.

1st this mobile update BT HAS DONE IS DRIVING ME NUTS, I try to go to the full site and it kicks me right back to the mobile! The mobile site starts on the 1st page of the junkies, and then you have to scroll all the way down to the page selector. After that you have to scroll to the bottom of the page to read the latest post. Finally if you want to reply you have to go all the way back to the top of the page, PIA!

Anyway, I learned something today.....what ever is in tobacco is some crazy addicting stuff. I knew this already because I smoked a pack a day for almost 16 years and it was a Bi..h trying to quit. I think it actually took 4-5 times before I was able to actually quit for good. I also smoked cigars from time to time and really enjoyed those. A good MonteCristo with a glass of Makers Mark on ice would make any day seem to melt away. Yesterday I had a weak moment and smoked part of a MonteCristo, probably didn't make it through 1/4 of it and was done. Today I have had nothing but cravings for a cancer stick. Amazed at how quickly a craving was reignited 2 1/2 years later! Lesson learned though, no MonteCristo's for me!

Back to your normal training broadcast!

    Dina,

That's a pretty tenacious person to have gone through a broken femur and get back to running.  The femur is the largest bone in the body and when it's broken it requires traction immediately.  I had seen a couple of these when I was on the FD and it would appear to be extremely excruciating.  Props to Roch for getting back into running and completely crushing a marathon.  And then there's Laura, HOLY CRAP is about all there is to say there!!

    Matt,

It sounds like you were playing with fire.  A coworker and friend of mine grabbed a cigarette at a bar while out of town many years ago after he's quit for a number of years.  I told him not to do it and he responded that "it was only a one" and "it'll be alright."  The next morning he was in the gas station buying a pack.  I of course, being the great friend that I am, told him "I told you so" and he continued to smoke for another 5 or 6 years before quitting again.  Last week he and I talked about how long he's been off the sticks again and i I believe he said 7 years.

And yes!!!  No more monte cristo's!!

Matt, no playing w/ fire. Not only are they cancer sticks but they are heart attack sticks too. No more preaching...your runs are fantastic.... keep them going!

Dirk, looks like the recovery is going well!

Yea those are crazy fast marathon times. Yea I broke my femur when I was 8 y.o, something I'll never forget...traction for a month, body cast for another month, rehab was not like today.. ouchie!. They also didn't put pins in the bone the way they can today.

Dina, 49 isn't so bad...lol it is just harder to recover, harder to see where you are going, have to stretch more and watch the diet more...lol I didn't start this until I was 50...it is taking a LOT of work trying to keep up w/ everyone.lol

RUN! Or you'll get a long lecture from me. I am watching the effects of a lifetime of smoking play out on my father. He quit years ago but the damage was done. He has a terrible time breathing. While we were at Silver Dollar City he had to have an electric scooter because he can't keep up walking anymore. And I won't even get into the fight with cancer he has already been through......

Ok, guess you got the lecture anyway .

Matt I totally agree we all need an offseason and unstructured workouts are a good thing. I think you have a good plan for your offseason. I have been reading more up on the Endurance Nation philosophy and the more I read the more I am being sold on it. They preach same thing. I just bought the ebook Endurance Nation Long Course Training Manual. I like the fast than far and less is more approach and how their plan fits you lifestyle and you don't have to fit your lifestyle to their plan. Maybe I'm drinking their Kool-Aid lol but I'm doing my homework now and I'm going to enjoy my down time before I jump back in.

Also glad to see disaster averted on the smoking front. I never took that up so I can't relate to how difficult it is to quit and how easy it can be to start up again so no lecture from me besides you got that from Dina and the group already.

That's a great article! Some would argue that I have a low tolerance for pain. Namely my wife. She, for some reason, will occasionally make comments that I can't take much pain. Honestly I don't understand where she comes from much of the time when making statements like that because I think I have a fairly high pain threshold. Although now that I think about it she hasn't made very many statements along these lines for a few years. Maybe since I've gotten into triathlon.

So, a short report on my progress for my knee injury. I went to PT last night and felt pretty good. The therapist seemed to think that I was progressing very well and that the amount of stability that's come back to my knee has greatly improved. The cycling has, in my opinion, provided the largest re-strengthening and recovery benefit of all of the things I've done. after riding this past weekend I felt some leg fatigue but within an hour or so after completing the rides I could almost feel the stability coming back. I am almost entirely pain free through all of my movements and I can walk on all terrain and not have any pain. I won't be doing any running anytime soon even if they allow it. I will stick to my plan of not running until November or later if that is the suggestion by the doc and therapist.I see the doc this Thursday for a follow up from the initial appointment. I am not sure what to expect but I somewhat would like to have an MRI done but I already know wha the issue is. If I choose not to have surgery the MRI would be for nothing. I'll need to make a couple of decisions before I go to the doc Thursday afternoon.BTW, Matt, how do you post from an iPad without having all of the text run together?

Dirk that is good news and glad to see you are sticking with the program. I actually think you'll benefit from not running and just riding until the doc gives you the go ahead to do so. Better safe than sorry and I hope you don't have to have surgery.

I saw an article on this the other day regarding this study. I'm not sure that triathletes are necessarily tougher than other people but I think there may be some truth to being able to deal with pain and discomfort better than non-triathletes. It's just the nature of the sport and I think we train ourselves to do it.

When you want to put a paragraph type this '

' without the apostrophe. If you type several back to back it will make double spaces!

I guess that didn't work, or actually it did. Maybe this way

    < / p >

. Remove all the spaces so everything is next to each other

Tony congratulations on your sprint! Sounds like you enjoyed the day, I am also taking this time to learn lots, and plan a schedule for everything I know things will come up but right now my life is all over the place, I decided that's why I got more done when the kids were home we had a definite schedule.

Dirk it's great to hear your knee is feeling better.

Matt x2 on what Dina said, my hubby smoked for 35 plus years he quit I think it's 5 yrs now but a few months after he quit he ended up having to have stints put in....it was very scary. So No Smoking!!

    Karl loved your volunteer stories!

    Will thanks for the article!

Dina WOW.... congrats to your friends!

So I have been searching for a used road bike for lots of reasons. There is a lot out there, I kind of like recycling, I don't need the newest for what I'm going to do (ride the trainer in the winter mostly) since I ride the tri bike for the most part. Anyway, it's kind of a hassle. I've sent about 7 inquiries to listings on Craigslist but most people don't even reply! I might end up buying new after all.

Sorry you haven't had responses on Craigslist, DINA.  I've only used Craigslist once and that was to find my tri bike.  I think I just got lucky because I've heard others have similar problems as you.  Have you looked on Ebay?   And wowza - are your friends blazing fast!   I can only dream of that speed.

Thanks for the link to the webinar, JOANNE.   I put it on my calendar - now I have to remember to look at it tomorrow.    Hope that when you say your life is all over the place that's a good thing and not bad.

Good news on the knee, DIRK.  Praying for you on your decision to get an MRI and surgery.  Let us know how it goes tomorrow.

Down to 10 days, WILL!!   Exciting, exciting!!   Hoping that you're keeping sane during the taper.  I forget - are you flying or driving to NC?  Is your lovely wife and daughter going too?

MATT, if I hear or ever see you light up another stogie....well....you don't want to know my wrath.     I really appreciate you sharing your struggle, though and admire your tenacity to quit.

What plans do you have for Joyce's birthday tonight, TONY?  At least get take-out so she doesn't have to cook.  How's the mountain biking going?   Oh, and congrats on completing your triathlon last weekend.  Um, yes, you do need to work on your transition times - weren't they longer for the sprint than they were for IM?   Too funny.

KARL - did you have fun volunteering?   Isn't it so rewarding?   You and Pam are kind-hearted souls and so giving.

All's well with me.  Got my 910XT up and running.  Did a couple runs - one road and one trail and one pool swim.  It's SO cool that it keeps track of the swim distance.  Cool, cool!!    I've read a bunch of info on heart rate zones and there's a lot of conflicting stuff out there.  I've been surprised to see my rate so high when I think I'm in zone 2.   What method have you guys used to determine your zones?  I trust you.

Today's my son's 18th birthday and I made him homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast and a turtle cheesecake for his candles tonight, then on Saturday is my daughter's 17th birthday so I'll make her her favorite foods. Yikes - I haven't baked like that since probably last year at this time and I think I'll be in trouble with adding a few pounds like Dirk.  I'm registered to run a 50K trail run in Cincinnati the following weekend so hopefully I won't put myself in too bad of shape.  I do love sweets, though.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Wednesday!
