![]() | ![]() left.right.repeat - 2010-01-03 2:06 PM It looks like everyone is settling in nicely....and getting along....(Playing headmaster there....haha). How about we kick off January with our Ironman challenge.....what this means....like last year is to cover Ironman distance in one month....we are behind a couple of days but will catch up quickly....you are welcome to count what you have done since Jan 1. So here is your goal (these are cumulative during the month of January - not in one workout): total 2.4 miles of swimming - that's about 3900 meters or 4200 yards total 112 miles biking - if you are inside you should estimate 15-16 miles per hour total 26.2 miles of running.... who's in???????? No prizes, no worries, no pressure, no time goals....just cover the distance...... Who's in? WHAT NO Prizes?????????????????????????? I'm in!!! Triple the running |

New user![]() | ![]() Hi all I'm In for the Jan Challenge!!! ok, been doing a lot of reading up on my first "Tri". I've been trying to figure out the "right" couch to Sprint, to Olympic plan for me. I DON'T want to get injured, I DO want to push myself. I used to love/play sports, ran 10 k's all the time, and was a high school/college athlete, but stopped for well over a decade. Now, i'm about 40-50 lbs overweight, but still able to run/bike for 30 min straight....while gasping for air afterwards ![]() I'm a bit overwhelmed here, so hoping for advice from those who have done this all before. Should I go for a couch to Sprint, and then Olympic 20 week plan, or should I start w/ a beginner's exercise program, to help w/ my joints and injury avoidance? 3x per week seems a little light, but I keep reading all the warnings about not overdoing it in the beginning. I hit the gym tomorrow at 6 am sharp... HELP?! Anne Las Vegas & Seattle 2010 Goals: 1st Sprint and Olympic! Still trying to determine specfic events |

![]() | ![]() swimmermama - 2010-01-03 6:36 PM I'm in for the January IM distance. It'll be a good way to help me keep my month a little more balanced. Do you think counting 10 miles for a 45 minute spin class would be fair? I usually lose a few minutes to warm up and cool down, so we probably get in 40 minutes of riding. Nancy It sounds good to me ![]() |

![]() | ![]() GaryRM - 2010-01-03 5:32 PM Woohoo!!!! PR distance for continuous swim! Little over 1500 meters and at a good time (for me). For those joining and catching up I just learned to swim Jan 2009 (could not swim 25 yards without stopping). I am not a natural swimmer and its been a tough battle. I have deep respect for those who think nothing of a 1000 meter warm-up. Biking and running are much more of my speed but I have come to enjoy the swim. Best thing about today was that when I hit my distance I stopped (per plan) but could have kept going. Sig updated, didn't put my name in it as it would be a bit redundent. Yeah Gary...before you know it 2000 will seem easy! Congrats! |

I've been trying to figure out the "right" couch to Sprint, to Olympic plan for me. I DON'T want to get injured, I DO want to push myself. I used to love/play sports, ran 10 k's all the time, and was a high school/college athlete, but stopped for well over a decade. Now, i'm about 40-50 lbs overweight, but still able to run/bike for 30 min straight....while gasping for air afterwards ![]() Anne, First, the couch to Sprint then the Oly plan sounds good to me. With a couple of comments. First these are generally generic plans and you have to tweak them to fit into your schedule and what your body is capable of. If you miss a workout, don't sweat it and try to jam it into the schedule. In the long run one or two missed workouts will not hurt you. Respect rest days as they are more important than any of your workouts (something I struggle with). Also, its generally not any one workout that will get you, it is the cumulative wear and tear on your body that can cause injuries so with the "3x per week seems a little light" be careful until you know how your body will handle the effort. As for Tri training vs. ST training. I think ST training is very useful but is no replacement for the Swim/Bike/Run training so unless you need to ST train for a specific injury or issue I would start with the Tri training and add the ST training in as possible. My 2 cents and since I have only been doing this for a year take my advice with care and follow LRR's or Mavs advice if it differs. On another subject, not sure I want to double the run miles with my knees but double the bike and swim would be good. If I do it will you buy the first round of beers Bryan?? Mav can buy the 2nd round! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Folks, What a pleasant surprise to log in this morningand find several pages of new messages. It is going to take me a while to read through them all but I will try to do that over the course of the day and/or evening. In the interim though, WELCOME TO ALL THE NEW LRR GROUP MEMBERS!! B-man - 2 finish lines to start off the year. Mrs FBP and I did the January 1st Resolution Run 5k. It was a very pleasant day compared to past years - temp was right around the freezing mark, very light snow and virtually no wind. I finished in a very comfortable 31 minutes. Mrs FBP finished in 35 minutes. Bit of a scare at the end of the race. Mrs FBP was experiencing numbness in her lower lip, chin and cheeks. Slurring speech, etc. We left right from the race and straight up to the hospital. By the time we got there the numbness was gone but she had some tingling in her arm/fingers. We got seen almost right away, some bloodwork ordered but in the end no firm diagnosis. Doc said no heart attack but it could have been a very mini stroke. Also though it may be something related to migraines which she seems to have been experiencing with greater frequency over the past couple weeks. Scan ordered for later this week or next. She's seeing our family doc later this week and may end up referred to neurologist. After a couple of hours in the ER she was released and ever since has felt totally fine. (For those of you involved in the healthcare debate - we didn't have to pay for anything !) Today I hope to get to the pool for the first time in ages. I may have to dog paddle its been so long Got Sebastian set up on the trainer yesterday. It took a while - I had to change out the back tire which I HATE doing. Plan to do a short ride tomorrow. Lastly, looking forward to the World Junior Hockey Championship gold medal game tomorrow night. Canada vs. USA. Canada is going for a 6th straight gold medal. This year's tournament Canada won the round robin game against the US, 5-4 in O/T on News Year Eve. Game was an all-time classic. Final should be just as good - regardless who wins Pete (Special for Mav - sad to see our boy Jason leave for the Big Apple but at least its not to the Yanks!) |

![]() | ![]() Hey Pete...so sorry to hear about Mrs FBP, hope you get it figured out soon. Can you believe they let Jason Bay go?????????? Disturbing at best!!!! I was in Boston a couple of weeks ago eating with some BT friends and Theo Epstien(Red Sox manager) sat down next to us (GULP). When we were leaving my husband bent down and said "theres always next year".Wonder how it will go without JB!!! Gary...I am in for the second round!!! |

I've been running (off & on) in LV for almost 3 years, so I know a few GREAT groups you may want to join for your long(er) runs. Also, there's some GREAT cycling groups in town as well... say the word, and I'll PM you some links. Bryan, I guess I'm in for the Ironman challenge minus the running ![]() ![]() Gary, Woohoooo for your long continuous swim! You're doing GREAT! Welcome to all the Newbies |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yahoo - I got to the pool and did a 500m swim at lunch. You know its been too long between pool visits when you need 4 attempts to open your combination lock !! I am going to try and do 3 sessions per week (I'll try to do 750m - 1000m) through the month of January and then I will launch into the "Zero to 1650" training plan http://ruthkazez.com/ZeroTo1mile.html Sticka |

If you have room for an "old" friend (and I mean old in more ways than one!) then I would like to join back! I know it has been one year since I have been on this forum, but if you have room I'd like to come back! Thanks Bryan and Gary for your inspires and messages throughout the year and an especially big thanks to Mav for her constant encouragement throughout the year. I would like to be a regular contributor and have a lot of questions. I am planning on an HIM in September - my Achilles tendon willing - and will need lots of help to get there. I can't promise to post daily, but will be here a couple times a week at least. Any room at the Inn?????? Here is my updated info: Dan .... 48 ..... Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Started my new years "retraining" today. Needed to loose the 8 pounds that I picked up over the holidays, plus an additional 5. I have a question that may sound stupid, are we supposed to post our daily workouts and lengths, etc. I enjoy reading what everybody is doing but dont want to drive people crazy with to much information. Just asking. Correct me if y'all would like and I wont do it any more, but, just in case, I started my crosstraing back this morning. One hour in the morning (5:30), 3 days a week with most emphasis on core strengthening. Tomorrow morning is the beginning of 2010 swimming, 2000 yards in 45 minutes is the goal. I read where alot of y'all really enjoy your time in the water. So do I. I started swimming at the end of June 2009 and logged over 100 miles by December 21 of 2009, and couldn't swim 50 yards without stopping on my first swim. As far as nutrition, trying to keep my calories at 1600 per day until I get to my target weight. Healthy calories of course. Thanks for sharing your information with me. It is very helpful. Billy |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() MSU Dan - great to have one of the prodigal sons return. I'm sure that our patriarch the B-man will be "slaughtering the fatted calf" to celebrate your rejoining the group!! I realize now that I have been less than precise insofar as my race goals for 2010 are concerned so here is what they are: February - Cops For Cancer 5k (my bro is a 'copper and who hasn't been affected by cancer) April - Lincoln 5k (a race put on by a friend that raises money for our regional children's hospital) May - Fredericton Race Weekened 10k June - Rockwood Sprint Triathlon (Saint John, NB) September - Lobsterman Olympic Triathlon (Freeport, ME) I may also do another Sprint distance event in late July or mid August. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A couple of questions for all of you: 1) would you recommend upgrading to a (considering Silver) paid membership? I've read what the site says about the added features, but just want to get your opinion.. 2) I'm usually not tech-dense, but for some reason I can't figure out how to subscribe to threads? Is this a paid membership feature? thanks! |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lena, I was wondering the same thing. Is a bronze or silver membership worth it? I was just logging on to ask that very question. |
![]() ![]() |
Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lena - I have the Bronze level mainly so I can upload my workouts directly from my Garmin. Some of the member only stuff is great but mainly for the Garmin stuff. Recently they had a discount on membership and re-upped my enrollment. As for the thread, on the bottom right of the screen should be a "Toggle for email notification" (or something like that). |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary, thanks. I use a Polar now and was thinking that after the May Marathon, maybe will look at getting the Garmin, since its use seems to be so wide-spread everywhere I look.. nice to know i can upload stuff on here from it. THat, plus the coming (hopefully really soon) iPhone app will make BT a VERY tech-geek-friendly site for me hehe So, email notifications is the only way to sub? I saw an option in the Preferences for Thread Subscription, so that makes me think there has to be something else.. Of course, BT is not set up like a regular forum, so I'm not sure.. |
