How's everyone doing with their training?  Anyone have any races coming up?

I think I'm pretty much shut down for a while.  I'm going to skip the 50 mile mtb race I was aiming for, I just haven't put in the time I need to be ready.  As of now, I have nothing on the horizon to train for, I'm going to just focus on base run/biking until the end of the year, maybe shift a little focus over to weight loss/cooking for a while.  My plan for next year is similar to what I did this year, but with hopefully a few more Oly's instead of sprints.

Right now my bike is sitting in the garage with a flat tire, and I don't even have the motivation to fix it...  Actually, it's not so much the motivation to fix the tire that's lacking, it's the motivation to clean out my garage which NEEDS TO BE DONE!! before I can really work on the bikes again.  Or even set up the rollers for a morning ride.

If (when) things get more stable around here, I'm planning on buying a new bike this off season.  Thinking of spending ~1k, and have it narrowed down to a 105 or Apex equipped road bike, or a light(ish) 29er hardtail.

It was a hard decision, but I decided to forgo the two HIM races I had scheduled for the end of the year.  Instead, I'm going to do two more olympic distance off-road races then focus on cross training for the rest of the year.  I really think I need a few weeks of reduced running volume to heal.

what 2 races do you have left?  One is the Utah Nat's, right?  That's coming up pretty soon, is there another race before that?

I would love to finish the year at XTERRA Worlds in Kona, but the chances of me finishing in the top three at Nationals is very unlikely.  Not being pessimistic, just realistic about the competition.  I'm thinking I'll make this a goal for 2011.

Best of luck this year, but if not definately go for it next year!  Lots of off season base running, stay healthy, and you're there.  Oh, and maybe a swim class or 20 Sealed

Way to go Tim! What an accomplishment - you should be really proud. I know we're proud of you!

David - I cleaned out my garage a couple weekends ago and it was such a relief. Things pile up so quickly it can get out of hand.

My training has been going well - just running right now. I'm doing the RnR half mary in about a month, SV Marathon in about two months, then pacing Morgan Hill half a week after that. My volume is climbing steadily and the knee is fine so far so I'm happy. I've been getting bored with my usual 7/8 mile mid-week runs so I did intervals this morning (see logs for details). It was really refreshing to do something different...I need to do more speed work like this.

Here's a question for 'yall (I'm practicing my Texan lingo). For the RnR Half, should I just do it at a comfortable pace or should I try to set a new PR? This is the course I set my 1:41 PR on last year...I'd LOVE to break into the 1:30's! My only concern is that I'd need more recovery time if I push it. The marathon is 4 weeks later, and finishing that in under 4 hours is the real goal for the season. Should I go for both or not risk it and "lay up"?

Look what I received today:

Dear XTERRA Competitor:

Congratulations! It’s my pleasure to invite you to compete in the XTERRA USA National Championship race to be held in Ogden, Utah on September 25, 2010.

As a leading regional points scorer, you have earned a slot at this prestigious event, where the title of National Champion in your age group will be up for grabs.

The field is limited to those racers, like yourself, who have qualified in the eight XTERRA regions throughout the country.

Looks like I'm going to Utah!

Whoa, looks like I'm a little behind in here.  Congrats Tim!

I did a brick Monday that left me completely gassed.  Haven't done a thing since.  Before that I was on track maintaining about 15-20 miles running, 30ish biking and about a mile swimming each week.  I have the Vegas Sprint on the 26th and I'm doing Big Rock down at Lake Perris on Oct 16th to finish out my season.  Then it's pain cave time!  Of course I spent most of the $ I made selling all that gear on a new cellphone yesterday so it might be close to Xmas before I get that Powertap I was planning on buying Embarassed

I hear ya on the boredom.  That's why I actually moved to triathlon from just running.  It got so redundant all the time.

4 weeks is more than enough time to recover from a HM!  BUT....if it was me, and the marathon was what I was reeeeeeaallly wanting to PR, I'd go easy on the 1/2, call it a training run and push the pace for the full 26.2.

I say go for it!  Sure it might cost you an extra day or two, but you should have sufficient time to recover.  Plus, with four weeks prior to your marathon, you will probably have completed your last long run and be tapering anyways.

But remember, this advice comes from a guy that has a real, hard time holding back on race day.  I feel if I'm paying to race, I'm going to give it my all.  Otherwise, I might as well save my money and be training at home.

XTERRA USA and an off-road tri at Vail Lake (Temecula), Southern CA.  I did the event last year and had a good time.  Its a nice off season race to keep thing going.

Are you planning on doing the TBF off road duathlons at the beginning of the year?  I'm going to try and make a coupl of them.

Nope.  In a 18 week marathon training plan, the last long run is done in Week 15.  The remaining time is mostly intermediate distance runs at an easy pace.  Most of the hard work has been completed at this point.

I was using this plan before I became plaqued with injuries:

I'd like to.  Winter timing is a bit more iffy to schedule ahead, so I probably won't know till the last minute for each of them.  I wanted to do one or two last year, and missed them all.  We'll see...

I have heard of 3 weeks plenty of times, hell I've even executed a plan w/ one, I just couldn't imagine thinking I was 'done' 4 weeks out from a race.  Not that 3 weeks is that much different.  Anywho, I digress...

Awesome run this PM!!!!  My 12 year old daughter asked if she could go out with me.  Headed out on my standard 3.4 mile loop at a bit faster than 10 minute pace.  She held up great.  Slowed down a little for the second half, but the entire run came in right on target.   She was even kind enough to take off sprinting with 20 yards and announce that she beat me!!!

Saturday my son has his first XC race of the season.  Not sure what he'll run, but the 800+ miles he's put on since mid-May are sure to pay dividends.  He's hoping to come in around 16 minutes.  We'll see.

It's great to see your kids surpass you in endeavors.

LOL!  I always rank myself among all the AGers, but if they award the 'military' category, I'm a shoe-in.  I was lookin at last year's results and if it's the same this year, I'm actually on par w/ the competition.  You know me, my pathetically retarded swim technique is keeping me at the sprint distance for now.

Course is between 3 and 3.1 / suppose to have some hills.  Coaches here are incredible (Neuqua Valley).  They're bringing him along very slowly and delibarately.  Told him he's to sit in the pack right behind the leaders and then go after them at 2 miles.  Should be fun to watch.

Nah, I'll let her pull me along.  I was so excited for her.  She's in great shape, but doesn't realize what she's capable of.  Her older brother's constantly hassling her about running and she uses that as a reason not to do so.  She decided to run XC with the girls in 7th grade this year.  Today they cancelled practice and she surprised me with asking.  She and I chatted the entire time and she really did awesome.  Her biggest challenge is that she doesn't like to do anything where she can't be "perfect" -- kid gets a 99% for a class and is unhappy in spite of us telling her she's doing great.

Really miss the coaching -- with kids the age they are now, I'm done with it after 12+ years.  So fun to watch them grow and accomplish things they didn't believe in.

OK.  It looks like most of you are wrapping up for the season.  So, what are your plans for the off-season?  Are you going to focus on a certain aspect so you will come back stronger next season?

Like I said earlier, I'm planning on taking some time off of running.  Instead, I'll be focusing on hiking for a while.  I have plans to hike the Grand Canyon with my oldest son in April.  Also, I've been wanting to incorporate stand-up paddling into my workouts.  As for specificity, I need to improve the swim.  I would like to do a couple swim clinics and work with another swim coach for a few months.

I still plan on doing a race here and there.  In February, my wife and I do a couples relay.  Each person does a 5k lap around around a lake.  The course is really fast.  It would be nice to hit a new 5K PR here.
