Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tmoran80 - 2011-11-03 9:37 AM Glad you got that diagnosed. Along the lines of what Brian mentioned it pays to be in tune with your body and if you don't listen you are going to casue some real damage. Not trying to mess you up in the head cause I know how you are with your swimming but is there something you are doing in your stroke that is causing this? kcgolf - 2011-11-02 10:07 AM Ulnar nerve impingement - physio for 2 weeks - ice, stretch, ice, stretch, ice, stretch repeat....................... LOL. Going to mix in a bit of tens along the way as well. Guess is that it is caused by repetitive movements (elbow bend and catch during swim). He did say it was good that I did not ignore it because if I had we could have been looking at loss of strength and some long term side effects. Anyway, just thought I would share this info all of you just in case you ever experience it. Have a great day. KC Hey Tim. Don't worry, nothing you can say that will mess my head up more then it already is - LOL. (BTW - I thought I was getting better with that messed up swimming head thing anyway? Seriously, I was thinking the same thing. I even have some new vids from a couple of weeks ago of me swimming that I am going to post on youtube for you guys (and my coach) to look at and give some feedback on. I am also doing some research on stroke mechanics to see if it is a stroke issue or a over use-take it easy for once will you Kevin issue-issue LOL. After I post the vids (don't worry, none are taken while swimming in my red speedo) although those will be available soon but by special request only, any feedback will be appreciated. For now though, how does this look?

I have stepped away from my runs for now and am just riding my bike. I will jump back into the pool and roads soon. Hope everyone is doing well! I just found out about a downsizing at work so my stress level went up a little....but I am always looking for other opportunities so I am not too concerned Hey Kevin - nice to see you - good luck with the downsizing thing. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I had blocked off the weekend of August 18 from the band so I can do my IM planned bike ride of 6 hours. We just got a request to play a wedding that weekend - in Madison, WI -hahah How sweet is that if I can work that out and do a run on the course saturday morning, play a wedding on Saturday night and then get my 6 hour ride on the course - and come home with $800 in my pocket (until I hand to my wife of course) |

Excellent! I hope to be well enough to join you that day. Here is the latest update I just posted on Face Book. The meeting with Dr. Michael Young went well. Several interesting points: 1. The biopsies taken last week failed to confirm cancer. That doesn't mean it isn't cancer. In fact, Young still thinks it is and will proceed as if it is. It just means the pieces taken for the tests were cancer-free. That MIGHT mean a benign growth. Either way, it has to come out. It will not heal itself. The surgery is the same in either case. Surgery entails a 4- to 6 inch incision, resection of a large portion of the right side of the colon and removal of lymph nodes to check for spread. A good sign - the tumor is growing inward and blocking the colon rather than outward. That means it may not be growing through the colon wall and spreading. 2. Operation is Wednesday morning, Bro-Menn. 3. I'll be in the hospital 4 to 7 days. Four would put it on Saturday, an unlikely day for release, but we shall see. All depends on me, when I get up to walk (try to stop me) and when my body's machinery kicks back in if you know what I mean. I will need some time at home but that could be as short as another week. I could be back at work in as little as two calendar weeks. 4. I will have a pain catheter that will drip pain killer right to the affected spot. Therefore, I will not need other pain meds in the hospital. 5. No special diet will be needed afterward. Big surprise there. 6. Tests on tissue will reveal if it's spread and whether chemo is needed. More good news - the chemo they use for colon cancer is extremely effective on cancer and mild for the patient with flu-like symptoms rather than extreme illness. Hair doesn't fall out. 7. I could be riding the bike again within 4 weeks, which would put me on track to be ready for TriSharks June 2. If chemo is needed it could slow me down another 8 to 12 weeks, but I could still salvage the race year. All in all a pretty darn good report given the situation. Kathy and I thank you all for your support.

Question - what is the shortest amount of time a person could take after a full IM before doing another one? Just curious. KC Elite racers don't try to do more than two a year from what I've seen of Wellington and Alexander. They spread them out pretty well too with shorter halves in between. But let's remember, they do nothing but train and eat right. For this boy, I was hoping to do two halves in 2012 separated by at least two months. That may be changing. I know people who race Olympic distances every weekend as part of their training. The longer we go, the longer the recovery has to be to avoid injury. I know that before the surgery I was like 6 weeks out for Ironman and just beginning to put on intensity and be able to hold the intervals. The physical demand is incredible and I don't think that it's just because I'm 60. Most folks I know take at least a month of doing nearly nothing to recover and avoid injury. Why not focus on one first. Then you'll have an experience to draw on and see what you can do a year later. |

KC I am still trying to get myself back into the physical and, more importantly, the mental state to start training that hard again. In my, short as it may be, experience with this, training for IM was a huge time, emotional and physical commitment. I cant imagine getting right back into 3-4 days a week of 2 a day workouts along with the other prep that goes into getting ready for IM. I am sure if you put this question out onto the IM Distance thread you will find answers from folks with much more experience. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Speaking of the IM distance thread - I spend alot of time checking out that forum and am getting a little concerned after someone questioned if 8 hours/week was too much during the offseason. The responsed overwhelmingly replied that it was not enough! Most people were spending 10-12/week and now I am thinkning that I am slacking. This week I am gonna go with 6 and increase slowly up to 9 over the few weeks then kind of hangout around 8-10 week. I guess this is all personal preference and what you are looking for out of the race. Most of those people did seem pretty hard core and maybe are competative in their AG. Me personally I have only maxed at 12/week during HIM training and am getting really worried about how I am going to hit my peak weeks of 16-20 hours. I guess it is just one day at a time right? |

We get extremely creative about finding the time. Earlier in the mornings, later at night after other people are in bed. Trainer rides are very efficient in that you don't waste time getting out of traffic to clear roads to work out. I did 3/4s of my rides in the basement. Winter, I think I was spending longer time on the bike than anything for base building...up to 3 hours on Sunday afternoon by the start of the intensity period in January. That added time. The 2-3 other rides were just 90 mins or so. Then two hours in the pool early mornings, three runs (one speed, one VO2 and one base) added 3 hours. (never ran more than 15 miles and 2.5 hours even at my peak.) Time really adds up quick. Right now we should just be base building, healing up, taking it light, strength training, watching the weight and losing some. Others can go like crazy now but for what? When do they want to peak? If they peak too soon, they burn out or get hurt. You'll do great. Have you read Going Long by Freihl? Pretty good overview of what has to happen.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Team. Thanks for the info on how much time you should take between full IM's. I was just curious - that is all Tim - feeling the same thing here as well. I feel like I am just drifting with no structure in place and feel guilty about it. I decided today, while putting in a swim, testing out my ulnar nerve - followed by a trip to my physio guy to work on the issue, that I am going to put a good plan in place by the end of November and for the rest of the month - I am just going to maintain. Speaking of the swim and phyiso - I went swimming on the suggestion of my Physio Guy (Chuck) to see how my symptoms felt and then went right to his office for a consult and some work. As I was laying on one of the beds, with a heat wrap on the neck, ice on the elbo and wrist and 2 tens machines making the upper right side of my body twitch all over the place, followed by ultra sound to the wrist, elbo and neck, all I could do was laugh and wonder if this is what I have to look forward to for the next 9 months. I hope not, but if it is - then it is. I took some more video of my swim technique and will be looking at it (with your help) to see if I can isolate the issue and work through it. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great weekend. I am participating in a swing and sweep tomorrow (golf and curling event) and looking forward to it. Tim - how is the baby? Take care everyone and be safe. KC |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Videos look great. Unbelievable improvement from your last videos. I do have one comment though. Your left arm seems to be coming over that imaginary line (at least thats how I call it) on your reach. Or I gues it would be you are over reaching. I do the exact same thiing and didn't know it until someone pointed it out. Watch your arms and you will see what I am talking about. I do alot of the Catch Up Drill to make sure my left hand is not crossing over. Hopefully that makes sense. kcgolf - 2011-11-04 9:41 PM Hey Team. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team. Hope everyone is having a great day. Tim - thanks for the compliment- I do feel better in the water but I am seriously slow! I have noticed the left arm crossing that imaginary line and that is the reason I get a red friction irritation on my left shoulder while swimming-my beard stubble rubs my shoulder raw- so I am definitely going to start working hard at getting that better. As you can all see I have also given up my dream of being the best bilateral front crawl breather in the world LOL However, while I am very comfortable breathing left, I have a real tough time breathing right. I always seem to suck in water because the timing of my right side breathing sucks! I am wondering if you guys think that my crossover action with the left arm causes a bad head/body/arm position that makes it tougher for me to breathe to my right? I am also looking for efficiencies to implement that may take some of the pressure off the ulnar nerve that is becoming an issue? Anyway, thanks for the input - keep it coming. KC |

Hey Coach. I don't really have a swim Coach. There was a girl that was helping me on Tuesday but I can't attend that swim anymore so I probably won't be seeing that coach anymore. Can you tell me what you mean by your left arm comment? I am not sure I will be seeing that coach again either. I was hoping to continue to see her but my schedule does not allow for Tuesday evening anymore and I am not so sure about her anymore as well. The last time I saw her she started giving me a hard time about only breathing one way. I asked her if she could put the breathing thing away for a bit and help me with my technique but she was very insistent on telling me that she was not so keen on helping me unless I was interested in bilateral breathing. Therefore I think I am going to be moving on KC |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Team, Hope everybody is doing well. KC, I'm no swim coach but you seem reach into the middle of your path (and slightly over). My swim coach told me I was doing the same thing and it acts as a 'block'. she said I needed to create 'superman' arms instead of diving arms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFmnJnmahLw this is a good example of what I mean. Not sure if that helps or not, but I found once I widened my arm, I was able to glide a bit more and was less rushed.
