Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Brenda Happy Birthday to your son. I'm sure he appreciated the home made cinnamon rolls and all you've done for him. I also want to wish your daughter a Happy Birthday as well for this coming weekend. Like I said I'm sure they appreciate everything you do for them. To be honest I'm not sure what we are doing tonight. I would like to do something for Joyce for sure especially since it was sounding like she was not having a very good day today. I know she is very concerned about one of her friends who she works with who is in the hospital and not doing well. She went to the hospital to see her today. We are praying she is doing better and soon. I'll have to wait and see what she'd like to do when she gets home later on this evening. It'll be whatever she's wants to do and she won't be cooking. I didn't get out to mtn bike last weekend but am planning on going Saturday. I may head out with friends on Saturday for a day trip out to Montauk to ride the trails there with them. And yes my transitions times were just terrible this past weekend. They make my IM transition times look fast lol. I really need to work on that. |

Veteran 454 Cairo, GA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Junkies - Officially checking in. I knew September and October were going to be busy but I had no idea what that really meant. I have spent the better half of my afternoon catching up on posts and I feel like I have missed so much. Wow Dirk... Don't know what to say about the knee.. sheeesh... praying for you. I am still in training mode and am officially in marathon training mode, using Higdon's Beginner Training Guide. Getting the 4th run of the week in is proving to be challenging. I did make it back up to 9 miles last week without any IT band pain. D |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Brenda, no concerns on me picking up a smoking habit, I had a taste and did not like it. So even though it gave me some cravings I am good and moving on, although I gotta say the Makers Mark still tasted good, that stuff is yummy . Have fun baking I'm sure the kids will appreciate it. Will, I forgot your race is coming up so quick. How are you feeling? Hopefully not going nuts due to inactivity! Jen, welcome back and good luck on the marathon training. Do you have a specific one you are getting ready for? As for the IT band that can be tough, I have dealt with some issues off and on since about February, kind of a PIA! I have managed to ind some relief though, with my recent increase in miles I started to feel the tightness coming on again. So I decided to become a web MD and searched for some solutions and came across this stretch. After 2 weeks of just doing this stretch a few times a day and I do not even feel my IT band, it's amazing. It came from this page if you want to take a look. http://www.runnersworld.com/injury-treatment/stretching-and-strengt... (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (21KB - 8 downloads) |

Hopefully tour training will be a great training cycle. Marathon training is a different animal altogether but once you've made it through it's a great accomplishment. It may be somewhat of a good precursor to IM training too. I would also say you need to be very diligent about doing the right things to work on that IT band. Follow through with the article that Matt posted and see where it leads. I've seen a few of those stretches in other postings but I've not had any IT band issues myself, so no personal experience. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by trigal38 So I have been searching for a used road bike for lots of reasons. There is a lot out there, I kind of like recycling, I don't need the newest for what I'm going to do (ride the trainer in the winter mostly) since I ride the tri bike for the most part. Anyway, it's kind of a hassle. I've sent about 7 inquiries to listings on Craigslist but most people don't even reply! I might end up buying new after all. Now is the time if you're going to buy new... lots of 2013's on closeout. I just snagged a Scott CR1 that is usually in the 3K range for 1800. The base model CR1 (which still has decent components - 105 shimano) would have only cost me 1400... |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED To answer everyones questions: We are driving to NC (2 day drive) and both Jen and the baby are coming with me. We are going to take a week vacation over in the Asheville, NC area after the race. The taper hasn't been that bad so far... I've still got WO's everyday and some up to 1.5-2 hours... but it's funny, I do feel a little weird... like, do I still have all my fitness from all those long rides? ha! I dont think the taper (lack of WO's) is going to drive me crazy... I think for me it's just the race date approaching that's getting me. Tony, the only time I have felt like "superman phase" was in the bike race I did this past Saturday. I dont think I posted about it, but it's one of my strongest rides to date. Only 60 miles, but averaged 19.6 w/ lots of hills and wind. And I pulled the group a ton and didnt draft any. I'm sort of wondering if I went a little too hard b/c my legs havent really felt fresh since... but I've still got time to recover I guess. My dilemma is that all my WO's right now are calling for hard intervals but I may just ease up on them. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Taper is a hard thing to deal with when everything has been running at 1,000 MPH for so long. You're definitely not losing your fitness in such a short time frame. However, the designed hard intervals are like that for a reason, to keep you challenged while allowing good recovery. The bike race was one week ago correct? If so, you may simply be feeling the effects of riding shorter, hard intervals. These types of workouts usually cause my legs to fatigue for the remainder of the day (if it's a evening workout). If I do long rides at higher effort levels my legs will usually recover in about 2 days even if I try to grind out another moderate distance and effort the following day. The "fatigue" can sometimes be a result of the lack of use, I'll call it, that comes during a taper. The activity level over the past couple of months has not allowed you to complete the recovery process 100%. Now you're not driving more fatigue into your legs and working on higher fitness, you're in the 100% recovery phase, or taper. What about running? How do your legs feel then? Does the plan your under call for any hard running intervals? If so I would not do any hard running at all. You're only going to increase the odds of injury and gain nothing from it. |

Extreme Veteran 868 Racine, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Matt..... thanks for the post on stretching, I had been having an issue with my left hamstring and hip flexor for seriously about 3 years, it was deep and I just put up with it although I have been feeling that when I run Iam squashed (not loose ) from my knees to my mid section, almost bent over..... So I started having some knee pain and finally had a talk with our massage therapist, she told me I am going to be mad at her and that I couldn't fire her after the "pain" she was gonna put me through lol.....well I can take a lot during a massage but OMG..... Anyway today the hamstring feels about 75% better, my knee pain is pretty much gone she also gave me some stretches to do and I am hoping to schedule with her every week or two And hoping this will help with my stride. Jen..... good to hear from you! Will......wow time has flown by, just a few more days!! Brenda......yes life is good its just getting the good organized! And happy birthday to both of your kids....mmmm cinnamon rolls and turtle cheesecake!! Tony....... Happy late birthday to Joyce and lots of prayers to her friend! Edited by Jo63 2013-10-17 5:40 AM |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Jenn glad to see you checking and it's good see that you've be able to get back to running and training for your marathon. I have had IT band issues in the past and the stretch Matt posted with pic looks a lot like one of the stretches I did when I had problems with that. I think it helped. Good luck with the training and stay healthy. Will during my taper I felt tired and sluggish even with the reduced workouts. My friends said that was normal so I was not too concerned about. I would not over do any workout now. Nothing you do know is going to make any difference on how you race. The hay is in barn and your body can only absorb so much fitness. I would definitely try to take it easy, rest and make sure you get to the start healthy and feeling good. I know I didn't do much if any training the week before the race and I didn't feel like I was rested to be honest. I sort of felt like I was dragging all week but when race day came I felt great. Just stay occupied and don't let your mind deceive you, trust your training man, you're ready to do this! Congrats on the new bike you gotta post pic for us. Brenda good luck with the 50K trail run. I gotta sign up for one those one of these days. JoAnne glad to hear that the massage therapist was able to help you out. I have to say I totally envy you being that you have your own massage therapist lol. I know, I know you are paying her but good to see you're able to take advantage of that benefit. Thanks for the birthday wishes and the prayers for Joyce's friend and coworker. Dina I hope you have better luck on the bike search and I don't blame you for doing your homework. I did the same thing with the mtn bike. I made sure I knew what I was getting into before I bought it. I hope you can find something good that doesn't break the bank. Last night was my wife's birthday and I know she has not been having a great week and I know she did not have a good day yesterday so we made sure that when she came home she didn't have to do anything. I knew she didn't want to go out so we wound up ordering in. We have a pretty good Italian restuarant here that I ordered from and went out and picked up the food for everyone. I have to say the cannoli's were awesome! They were the bigger ones and they were drizzled in chocolate with chocolate chips and a cherry on top lol. I'm sorry at least I didn't post the picture. That was the highlight of my evening last night lol. Oh did I mention how good they were? lol |

The shop had to order the bike, so not sure when I will have it... may not be until I return from IM trip (3 weeks). Right now my plan is to keep both bikes (new roady and my tri bike) and then decide which one to sell after a bit. And sorry but I didn't get the yellow (it was the base model) , I upgraded to the "Elite" which is over 2 lbs lighter. It's a shiny black instead of matte, which I was a little bummed about b/c that matte black looks awesome... Yes, they have tracking. I will definitely post it here when I get the info... I still haven't chosen a nutrition plan for the run... have a couple options but not sure which way to go... Thanks for the taper tips. Yes, the race is looking like it may be cold... which I haven't trained in much... so I'm trying to figure out this week what gear to take... I may need to buy some stuff when I get there... ha. My current cold gear consists of arm warmers and that's about it. Anyway, as I mentioned before, everyone is saying there will be no current benefit and that this will be possibly the toughest swim year, so I'm thinking the swim is going to take me a bit longer. But, I'm praying for no wind... one year there were gusts up to 33 mph and sustained 25 mph... and I've got some borrowed 808's on my bike right now... ah! Guess I'm going to need to take my regular wheels in case I need to switch to them since predicting wind is not an accurate science... |

NH | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by bswcpa I've read a bunch of info on heart rate zones and there's a lot of conflicting stuff out there. I've been surprised to see my rate so high when I think I'm in zone 2. What method have you guys used to determine your zones? I trust you. Congrats on your son's birthday, btw. In terms of HR zones, I don't really use them much anymore, but it's really necessary to do testing first. You can't use any age formulas or generic numbers. Our HR is too individual to fit into the 220-age, or some other canned number. Any zones are going to be a percentage of some HR, either threshold, max HR, or something like the heart rate reserve which uses a formula including your resting HR and max HR. I think the threshold is the best test. There are tests on this site which I think are good, or you can google and find a threshold test you like. To review, a REALLY general definition of threshold is the point at which your body can clear lactic acid about at the same pace you are producing it. Lactic acid is neither good nor bad, it really just is. Threshold is a hard pace, especially mentally, because we can go much harder than we think for long periods. Most tests use 20-30 minute sessions and extrapolate. It is important to get threshold heart rates for both running and biking since they will almost certainly be different. Once you have a threshold, then you can target your zones. Most plans spell out 5 zones, a the zones are defined by percentage of the threshold HR. The percentages vary a little depending on your source, but in general it's about up to 75% is z1, 76-85 is z2, 85-95 is z3, 96-105 is z4, 105+ is z5. How to train once you've got your zones established is the fun part, and there are still many different beliefs on optimal training. Tony can speak to that as EN has a very different approach than say Friel, but both have successful coached athletes to great performances. Do those tests and get your threshold numbers and come back and we'll open the floor to training philosophies! In the interest of full disclosure, I am mainly a power and pace athlete, though the philosophies remain the same, just the measurement techniques and therefore zone specifics are different. |

If it's windy, consider just changing the front wheel. But confidence and mental comfort are paramount, so if you have doubts definitely go with your other wheels. And remember that wind just makes being aero even more important, so try to get all the free speed you can out of your position. Can't wait for this race! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Warren I'm far from being an expert but I have been reading that long distance training book from EN. Basically when you do their outseason program they test you every month I think for the run and the bike. So from what I read you do those threshold test first and then you re-test to measure progress. I know they are very keen on training in Zone-3. Their philosophy is to go fast first and they believe training in Zone-3 makes you faster. Then as you know they build the far with endurance training which is more Zone-2 with some Zone-3 work. I would definitely recommend reading the v2.0 ebook they put out and reading the long distance book if anyone has any interest in their approach. I am reading the bike training section now and they discuss testing and training with power which is exactly what I plan to do. I am definitely going to get a power meter. I plan on doing the same as far as training goes using power for the bike and pace for the run which is what the EN coaches preach. I think I am going to purchase the outseason plan and the 20 week IM plan from them but I'm waiting to see if they'll drop the prices in Nov. like they did last year. Vero nice job in getting those runs in and sticking to your 4 day plan. I think it is a good strategy to keep them short and build from there. I'd like to the same for now myself, run more frequently but for shorter distances. Will sounds like you got a great deal on the new bike as well. I really want to get a roadie as well but I just got the mtn bike and I think my wife is considering a bike as well so no way I can swing. She would kill me besides I'd like to see her get a bike so that we could do some bike riding together. |

NH | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by DirkP So, a short report on my progress for my knee injury. I went to PT last night and felt pretty good. The therapist seemed to think that I was progressing very well and that the amount of stability that's come back to my knee has greatly improved. The cycling has, in my opinion, provided the largest re-strengthening and recovery benefit of all of the things I've done. after riding this past weekend I felt some leg fatigue but within an hour or so after completing the rides I could almost feel the stability coming back. I am almost entirely pain free through all of my movements and I can walk on all terrain and not have any pain. I won't be doing any running anytime soon even if they allow it. I will stick to my plan of not running until November or later if that is the suggestion by the doc and therapist.I see the doc this Thursday for a follow up from the initial appointment. I am not sure what to expect but I somewhat would like to have an MRI done but I already know wha the issue is. If I choose not to have surgery the MRI would be for nothing. I'll need to make a couple of decisions before I go to the doc Thursday afternoon.BTW, Matt, how do you post from an iPad without having all of the text run together? Let us know how this visit turns out. I think biking is a great way to build up the leg strength to help with stability. I have a close friend with very serious knee stability problems due to old injuries and surgeries before the day. He can't run at all, barely can get up and down stairs, but he can bike with the best of them. In fact, we did the Pan-Mass ( a 200 mile cancer fund raiser) a few years ago together. Keep up the biking, and I know this will be hard for you - but STAY SMART. |

What important events have I missed? Do I see something about Dirk with an injury? I will bet it's related to the knee that took a hit in the legendary Pultite crash of 2013... NH | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by strikyr I have officially ended my triathlon season today with the Cedar Beach sprint tri. Since they don't have it on the calendar here on BT I can't do an RR but I figured I'd just post a summary of the race here. Just a quick FYI - you can add a race to the calendar and do it that way. Or at least you could before the site e-design. I don't care what your report says, I think this was a great race. Given the swim difficulty (what is it with you this year and swim conditions??) the swim was ok and the bike sounds great. And then for you to nail a 25 something on the run after a head down bike hammer is fantastic. Remember, you're not comparing yourself to some arbitrary standard such as who shows up, but rather comparing yourself to what you could get of of your body that day. And I love your transition comments, I struggle with slow transitions too so I have that as a goal for next year. As an example. I have a buddy here who did Kona. Finished in 9:37 (yah, he's a little fast). But then the results came out, and he came in 88th, ... in his AGE GROUP! I know it's Kona, but jeeze, 88th??? He hasn't seen a number like that in his life. Does that mean it was a bad day for him? Hell no, he had a great day. He got the most out of his fitness on the day. |

Thanks! They have all been pretty easy pace. Except for yesterday (when I had my dog and had to do a few stops to keep from catching another runner who had a couple of dogs) they are pretty consistently about 9:50 to 10:00 per mile. Thats a little slower than my half marathon pace from earlier this year when I wasn't pushing much, but just trying to cover the distance. I wear the GPS watch and heart rate strap but I haven't really paid much attention to pace or heart rate during the runs. Last week a couple of them were at faster paces, but that was more due to limited time than anything. I'm trying to keep almost all of the miles at an easy pace and just build the miles right now. I might do a couple of 5k races in the next 2 months and one 6 miler (Turkey Trot) on Thanksgiving morning, that should take care of any faster paced running I need for mixing it up. I just want to build the base for a very busy January through March run race schedule that I'm probably going to do. In January I'll start running in the "Frosty Fun Run" points series again. A fun run/race almost every Saturday morning from January 4 through March 8. They range in length from between 3.7 and 5.5 miles. Then mixed in durring all that I'll run a 5k race on January 19th, a 10 mile race on March 1st, and finally another 5k on March 15th. So basically a race every weekend from January 4th through March 15th. Most of the Frosty races will be more of a medium/fast training run. I'm not really fast enough to challenge the top runners, but the fun "race" atmosphere of the series is a blast. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by wbayek Originally posted by strikyr I have officially ended my triathlon season today with the Cedar Beach sprint tri. Warren I think this race was on the calendar but it was a week early with the incorrect date of 10/6. I probably could have added it for the correct date but I was just to lazy to try and do that. I'm happy with the way race turned out and I'm not sure why I've gotten such rough swim conditions for my last two races. I hope it is not a recurring theme. I am very happy about the run I see some progress made there but man I have to say I've come such a long way on the bike and have made so much progress I think I can step it up again for next season and give the guys I ride with a real run for their money. I really did have a great bike that day. You are so right about transitions though I so need to take time out to work on that and I will for next season. I think if I had really had a racing mindset I could have done better I just went into this race with just have fun mentality. That is just unbelievable that your friend did a 9:37 at Kona and finished 88th! Holy cow 9:37 at Kona! I would take a 9:37 at any IM course lol. I know the conditions were very favorable this year but still a 9:37 is amazing. It goes to show you just how great the competition is there, unbelievable. |
