Hector, it is easier for us to analyze your stroke if we could actually see you swim! I can tell you what you're supposed to do til the cows come home but it's probably not gonna be that helpful until I see what you are doing in the water.

Dee, I swim with a 6 beat kick and about 14-17 strokes per 25. I try to back off my kick, but you know what they say about old dogs I haven't had any issues in my tris. I'm a lousy runner and nothing I do on the swim is gonna change that (I sound like Spokes talking about swimming ) I think the body adapts. You don't coast more on the bike to save your legs for the run!

I think the elliptical will be a nice alternative to running if my hip flexor protests. I just wanted to try running this week to see what happened. I'll do more mext week, and go out on the road. The dreadmill is such a bore!

Did my full strength training workout. My push ups are pathetic. Maybe that's why I get lapped on the pull buoy!

Pam

14-17 strokes is AWESOME!

With a 6 beat kick, were you originally a sprinter? They usually seem to have big, fast kicks.

I take 16 strokes per 25 yds for fly. But I do more when I swim freestyle. (I think my fly is more efficient than my free. I LOVE fly! I just wrote that in my log, in fact. That said, I can't keep it up for long!)

(Also, 25 years ago, I was a much better swimmer than I am now! Every now and then, I time myself, and realize just how far I've slipped.)

Did a few pushups today, too!

Well, I'm currently trying to reach out a little further, but it seems like when I do start to get shoulder soreness, I go back to swimming using the zipper philosophy...........

That's it -- EXACTLY!

When I tried the TI method, I think I kept overextending my shoulder. Result was --> Ouch! I couldn't decide if it was the shoulder joint, or the rotator cuff. Either way, I wasn't happy.

So now I'm trying to erase the info from my brain, and go back to swimming the way that I've always done it before.

HCS5QA - 2007-11-09 1:49 PM Thanks Sparko, Stretching has really become such a major part of my training. More so then i ever thought it would be, so thanks for the additional info.

OK.... As someone who doesn't stretch at all.... Why stretch? Does it help with post workout soreness? (That's the only thing I can think of. So maybe I've never worked out hard enough to need to do this. LOL)

If i don't stretch before running and after I will cramp up. When I started hitting the lone distances i felt it in my calf's. Anything less then two miles i always got away without stretching but i don't dare forget anymore beyond that amount.

it was interesting, last Jan I went to a tri clinic and my HS swim coach did the swim clinic - they actually taped us underwater while we swam

he did an excellent job of explaining the importance of the kick in the over all technique and efficiency

I'll see if I can find it at home and post some of the swim info

Yes -- That's precisely what I want --> Someone who can evaluate my underwater technique.

When I was a kid, they videotaped us underwater once. (It was hysterical to watch everyone, actually.)

Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone who does that around here though.

barqhead - 2007-11-09 Dee, I swim with a 6 beat kick and about 14-17 strokes per 25.

Wow...I've got to really concentrate on getting 17 strokes/25. You must be cruising to get good balance and glide at 14 strokes...

The more I hang around you guys the more i need to work. I never thought about stroke count, now I will have to think about it next time.

If I try to count strokes AND laps at the same time.... Well, it's a mess.

I end up taking the penalty route --> Start counting laps at the last number I remember. Which, hopefully, is higher than 2.

Okay, so I'm really bored while I'm sitting here at work, and here's what I've figured out...

If the average post takes up 4inches and there are 30 posts per page, each page will be 120 inches, or ten feet.  5,280 feet in a mile... If we reach 528 pages by the end of the month, will  have collectively "typed" a mile.

That's what happens when you work too many 14 hour days in a row.

ROTFLMAO!

Wow!

well, one thing it helps with is injury prevention - it also increases flexibility - both very good things

I'm celebrating my birthday (which is Monday) a little early with this tonight:

I love German Chocolate Cake. It has special meaning to me this year as one of the issues I had with X2 is she wouldn't make it/or get it for my birthdays because she didn't like it because "it looks like a dog turd on a plate."

But the key lime pie SHE likes smelled, tasted, and looked hideous. But I never said anything, but it looks like jello that's gone very, very bad. LOL

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (A few days early.)
