Lena, I have been a Bronze member for 1 1/2 years, but really haven't used any of the benefits. I do log my workouts everyday and felt that I "owed" it to the BT creaters to buy a membership to keep this site going. This is just me! I too have a polar and watch my HR during my workouts, but don't log the HR.

Question: I have reviewed the HIM training plans on this sight. Does anyone have a recommendation. My HIM is in September and how soon should I start a training plan? Most of them are about 4 - 5 months. Any thoughts.

Lena,
I guess I am not sure of the question then.  There is an option in the Settings that will send you update notifications to threads that you post to.  I turned that off as I quickly started getting a lot of emails from BT.  Now if there is a thread I am interested in I can just turn that one on by the Email Notification option.  There is a Mass Unsubscribe tab in the settings to turn those email notifications off.

Back from an icy 1 hr run.  35 degrees here.  South Louisiana is not supposed to be this cold.  This feels a little more like when I lived in Wisconsin.

LRR - BTW, got my updated shipment of Infinit and tried it tonight.  Not bad, mild taste but should not have had it tonight as it contains caffiene.  Good luck to me getting to sleep tonight.

Dan and Gary, thanks for your input...

Gary, no no you understood my question correctly.  What i meant was that most forums will have a Subscribe to Thread drop-down menu with options to get email notifications or not, and updates are always displayed in the User CP.. BT is laid out differently, so there is none of that.. But, I think i'll just go with the email notifications or will check the thread frequently.

I'm VERY close to getting my new bike... now it's just a matter of which one... I found a GREAT deal on the 2009 Felts! I can get Dura-Ace components - didn't think I could afford that at all! The question is, do I go under budget or spend just over budget... My question is this, is 2.86 pounds worth $1300? The ZW1 has full dura-ace where the ZW2 has partial dura-ace... they are both AWESOME bikes, but I'm just wondering if the weight of the bike makes THAT much difference. ZW1 weight 13.91 poundsZW2 weight 16.77 poundsI feel like I could get ANY bike at 16 pounds, but I couldn't even dream of a 14 pound bike before I saw that one last night... yeah, it's about $500 over my budget, but can I pass that up for $500? or do I get the less expensive one and get other stuff (or just save money - what a concept lol)I'm pretty much decided to go with a tiny little frame on 650 wheels... that's my size, and no one gave me a good enough argument to go to a 700 wheel... and I heard GREAT arguments about the 650's Now to get off the couch and ride lol

As everyone who knows me would say, I am cheap (my Scottish heritage)  so I would diet to lose the 2.8 lbs and save the money

More seriously, my attitude is that unless its the difference in something like a Kona qualification or a safety/health issue, then its crazy to get caught up in the spending frenzy.

Hi everyone. Welcome all the newbies. You've found a great group. Everyone here is very helpful and encouraging. I don't post often but do pop in from time to time to cheer everyone on and give an update or two.

Diane - Enjoy your new bike. Whichever you go with. I'm still intimidated by the tech specs and $$$ of buying a bike.

DH is tired of traveling and looking at early retirement (2020) so we're trying to max out 401ks and Roth IRAs and pay off the mortgage on our house. We may use the second home as an investment property to supplement our income. There are a lot of great houses on the market now at unbelieveable prices!

News on the tri club - Did the first of my assessments - strength, flexibility and running form. Overall strength is pretty good. Core strength is surprisingly good. Flexibility needs work. Form is good. Gait analysis was fine. No issues. Second round of assessments next week. Pedal stroke and swim efficiency.

Tri club also has a forum, so I'm posting mostly over there, but will check in from time to time on the turtles. Take care all.

Diane, I am with Freddie, 2.86 pounds are not worth $1300.  Take the $1300 buy some race wheels, aero helmet, heck a 2nd (or is it 3rd) bike and you are set!!!

WAEF - Tri club still sounds great.  My swim coach is trying to get a swim video session set up.  Would be very helpful to see.

Cold here and getting colder but at least we don't have to deal with 5-10 inches of snow.  Main issue is that the houses here are designed to handle very cold weather, especially the older homes.  I predict lots of busted water pipes at some of the homes around here.  Swim class was about speed and it kicked my tail.  Riding on the trainer tonight, with these temps are am appreciating the trainer more and more.

BT and my iPhone don't get along. Could you post this for me?

Hello all. We are in the airport going to the Disney half marathon for
Debbie's first half. BT a d my iPhone just don't play well together.

You are all doing great. Keep up the work and I will post more later

DN -- welcome back my prodigal. There is always a place at the table.
Once u are in this group you don't ever leave. Kinda like Hotel
California.

New bike - you go girl. Here is my .02. Buy the bike you love the
most. If that is the less expensive one then perfect ifnot okay there
too. I promise you will ride more because you love it. It's kinda like
a spouse --never settle - go for the one that makes you weak in the
knees and you won't ever ask, I wonder if.....

That said, it sounds like they are both great. Don't buy the more
expensive just for that reason, but buy the one you love.

Be back soon. See you all at the finish line

Diane, Congrats on the bike! There is nothing like a new bike for inspiration. I am sure you will be happy with this. You couldn't go wrong.

Bryan, enjoy Florida. I hope the weather warms up. It will be fun being the spectator for Debbie rather than the other way around.

I have my swimming finished for the Ironman challenge. Working on the run tomorrow and biking over the weekend.

Diane,
FWIW, I think you made the right choice.  Take the $1300 you saved and book a bike tour in the wine country in Calif to break the new bike in.  That is one sweet bike and you will have lots of good rides in the future.

Billy, heck yeah.  Too bad I am not doing the Mardi Gras RnR.  Considered it but the weekend before I am doing my favorite 10k.  Only so much racing I can do with the current family schedule.   Have to figure out a 1/2 way point for a ride.

Great news, my masters class will be holding a swim stroke video.  Only going to have a max of 10 folks and said it will be "Time Trial" like.  Not sure what that means but more info this weekend.  Coach signed me up already.

That is a beautiful bike, Dianne!!

Ok, I have a couple of questions.. probably more so particular to my situation than anything. I'm starting really from ground zero. Did nothing all pregnancy and Lukas is 8 months now.. the ONLY thing I did was a month of training before a HM in September.. and then stopped again. So, I officially started training last night (kids are all well now, so I could finally carve out some time to go to LF)..
I did a spinning class and yoga. Today, will do 3 miles on the dreadmill. Tomorrow, I'd like to swim. Sunday will be the first long run-only 5 miles, but i think enough, considering I'm starting from a complete and utter stop.

Questions: I know the day before a long run should be rest, would you advise swimming?
On the day of the long run (afterwards), Pilates ok?

I'm sort of trying to do as much as I can and be smart at the same time. My first marathon is less than 4 months away, and i have lost time, so now i feel like i really need to gear up in every area.

what are your thoughts?
thanks!

Lena,

Its perfectly fine to cross train the day before a long run.  I feel that a swim is perfect because you are using more upper body but you use just enough lower body to keep you loose for the run.  Your arms might get a little bit tired during the long run but it shouldn't be bad.  Also, I am a huge fan of spinning and yoga.  Most endurance athletes don't stretch enough.  Yoga really has increased my flexibility and I feel it has kept me injury free.  In fact, I like to do a yoga class the day after my long run to keep the muscles from getting too tight.  I would also suggest getting a heart rate monitor for spinning and increase or decrease the intensity of the workout based on your HR.

Good Luck

Glad to see everyone is doing well!

I think I'm about done with the swim for January's distance, and I'm putting a dent in the bike and the run.

John - I was planning to do the Indy Mini in the spring, but I decided that I'll kick myself when the weather turns nice and I need to be on the bike and I have to spend the time on long runs for the Mini.  Most of my friends are doing it, so I may go to support them, and I'll train with them when I'm not on my bike. But, since this is my first year with a "real" bike and aero bars, I think I'll need to spend some time getting used to it.  I'm guessing the trainer in the basement will only get me so far

Nancy,

That's a good plan.  Just for you to consider, Lafayette, IN is having a 1/2 Marathon Oct 25th if you are interested.  It runs around the Purdue campus and over the Wabash River.  I have to warn you though, there are two killer hills on the course.  It might not be Colorado type mountains but it still hurts a flat lander like myself.

Sounds like fun.  The rest of my family is big into Cyclocross, so I think we'll be spending most of our fall weekends at some races.  And, since my main race will be over, it's the least I can do.  I actually just bought a Cannondale CAAD8 Cyclocross bike so that I can transition to cyclocross with my husband and son this season.  It'll be my triathlon bike too, and my husband was able to get a pretty good deal on it since his cyclocross team is sponsored by Cannondale.

I do want to make sure I have some goals in place for after my 1/2IM.  I trained for my 1/2 Marathons last year and then felt pretty lost once they were over and I didn't have a reason to get out there anymore.  So I'm really open to any and all suggestions for 2011.

John, thanks for your advice.. I was thinking along the same lines, but wanted to make sure, so thanks!!

off to the gym for my first 5 miles since September.

Anyone use Zensah sleeves? I have heard great things about them and there is a guy on Ebay who is selling them for 4.99 each (and you can make a best offer and he accepted mine of $4).. usually they are $39 a pair. Size is small, and I hope they won't be too small for my height (5'9"), but at that price, I went ahead and ordered two pairs. I have a shin that likes support and I can use all the help I can get
