dirk...agree with david.  Looks good, but always err on the side of caution during taper.

My 16 mile long run went really well today.  I actually ran it about 20 seconds per mile faster than planned.  I was tired, but nothing hurt, and I did negative split.  Cutting back next week, but it's then it's a couple of heavy mileage weeks before my half marathon...which will be my gauge as to what my marathon goal will be.

jgerbodegrant - 2010-10-05 7:06 PM Dude, you're my hero. I wish I could run 32 miles. And honestly, my legs are like 6 ft long, it would be really funny in jorts.

So someone tell me what's up with my left foot. It's sore after every time I sit still, lay down, sleep etc. Like the damn thing tightens up and then hurts when I flex it. It has no pain at all due to pressure if I rub it. Been like this for a couple weeks.
hurt all the time, or just when you first get up in the morning/from sitting still for a while? sore or sharp pain? where does it hurt? Right off the bat (have no checked logs), if you have not done anything odd training wise, the first place i would look are your shoes, are they old? needing replaced?

It hurts when I've been sleeping or sitting for a while and get up. The pain is more dull, but it's in my foot, so it feels sharp...I know that doesn't really help. it hurts in my arch, almost across my whole foot. Done nothing crazy training wise. My shoes only have like 200 miles on them. I weigh 192, so I don't think 200 miles would kill them, but who knows. Newtons are supposed to last even longer (supposedly). What do you think?
stay away from the newtons;-) Um, which ones are you running in, have you been in them through all of your training thus far? (i only ask as i know about 7 different people personally who have been hurt running in them). If its both feet, and it goes away as you get up and moving, outside of hte shoes i'd say just take an extra day or two off running, ice them a few times, and some advil. both feet and going away is telling me something is sore/bruised/inflamed, but (at least not yet) actually injured. Think about it like this: shin splints, when heated, tend to stop hurting as much or go away. It's an inflamed tendon, and heating loosens things up A stress fracture hurts more the more you move on it, broken bone, not good. Take a day or two more than normal off, give it some rest, and see how that effects things. FWIW my feet the past few weeks are more sore than normal and besides needing new shoes i'm also gussing part of it is due to it getting colder out.

I've been running in Newton stability trainers.  Yeah, I have been running in the a while.  Have over 200 miles on them now.  It's only my left foot that hurts.  Sometimes it hurts all the time, but I have iced it and done the advil thing and still hurts.  I have an appointment tomorrow morning at 11 with an orthopedics specialist.  I'll let you know what he says.

I officially commited to the Hawaii 70.3 on June 4th, 2011 as of today.

I was going to wait a few more months since the race never sells out...but after watching the WC online...I just couldn't resist.  I noticed that many of my tri group members are already registered...so it should be a blast.

Oct 23. It will be my last one this year.

I ran 7 miles today, which is the longest I've ever run. I'm getting closer to the HM and 13.1 is starting to seem doable and impossible at the same time (if that makes any sense).

I bet your going to do very well in your HM.  I think the HM isn't all that difficult to train for and the atmosphere at the race I chose for my first one was incredible.  Once you get the first one under your belt you'll realize it wasn't that hard of a goal to attain and the running base for a HM isn't hard to maintain if you decide to keep doing them.

When is it?

Agree with Dirk...so long as you don't have injury issues...the HM is my favorite distance that I have raced so far.  I would love to do more of them each year...but it seems that most of them fall right before or after the tri races I want to do.

Thanks for the encouragement J & Dirk.
My HM is Dec 4th. Jamie and I have decided to stick together during the race since it's such a long distance for us and we will be able to push each other. We're starting to get more serious/committed now that our runs are getting longer and we are getting closer to the HM.

Had another solid 8 mile tempo run today.  Since it's a cut back week for me, I was supposed to keep it a very mild tempo of 9 mm.  Started out that way...but the legs didn't listen the last 5-6 miles as I got progressively faster.

its funny how the legs sometimes do that, also part of why my rest days are not scheduled and i takem them when i need them vs when a plan says (this also means you need to be smart with it).

I'm slowly building back in some mileage and holding onto a maintenance 8-12 hour s a week right now of mostly easy volume. Plan is to just sit here for a month or so and get used to the distance again and slowly build the running.

Good luck with the race!!

Definitely good luck on the race...I'm sure you'll rock it.

As for me, my running is out for the next month at least.  I have a muscle that tore away from a bone in my foot causing the beginning of a bone spur, which is evidently rubbing against another bone, causing pain.  Good times.  Either way, I cancelled my HM and am literally walking the run durations that I had planned.  I'm less than pleased, but that's life, right???  At least it's not "competitive season".

sorry to hear about the foot.  but I suppose if you're going to have an injury that's putting you on the shelf for a while, now's the time to have it.

If you want to hold onto that run fitness, and maybe imprve, GET TO THE POOL and start water running. you'll have to rebuild slowly as always to get the body used to the pounding, but fitness wise you can actually make progress there.

that said it does suck and i'm sorry, but you are right, it could be mid summer

Have any of you used hand paddles for swim training?

I've been thinking about getting a pair but wondered if any of you had any input for or against.  I wouldn't be using them all the time.  Sort of like my swim fins I guess...I only use them when doing kick sets.  I would only use the paddles during pull sets.

I'm looking to do a 7-8 mile run tomorrow and a 35-40 mile bike on Sunday.

yes i do use them, some in all workouts for pulling/warm ups.

these are some of the best out there: http://www.swim2000.com/product/strokemaker-paddles/

I use the size 2 and 3 (med yellow and large red). Start SMALL.
maybe a bit bigger than your hand and work up.

The paddles have been on my short list of tri related gear to buy for way too long.  I intend to get some over the winter and put them to use.  I also intend to hit the cycling harder on the trainer this winter too....maybe pick up some good interval work and maybe be a little more prepared to hit the roads in the spring.

My plan right now is to drop my runs to 2-3 a week totaling about 15-20 miles, the pool 2x a week and hit the trainer for 3 sessions a week.  As far as the bike goes I was thinking about 1 each.....1 hr, 1.5 hrs and 2 hrs to hit my 3 x.  What do you all think?  And, what type of workouts should I be thinking about for each/

Got in a 38 mile bike ride today. Practiced part of the course for my Oly tri next Sat. I may not be going fast up that huge hill at the end, but I'll make. The friends I bike with said they guarantee that I will see some people walking up that hill next weekend. I just hope I'm not dead by the time I get to the 10K.

On an unrelated note, sorry to mommyjack this thread but had to share my most recent pic of the baby.

You have a beautiful daughter.  Is your husband a gun collector?  If not, he might think about becoming one.  He's going to need to make sure he provides the appropriate fear factor for the boys knocking on the door in a few years.  Trust me, it works!  LOL  BTW, she has a gorgeous smile and it looks like she is a very happy baby.

As far as the Oly next weekend, you'll be fine.  The extra miles on the bike will go a long way to help you during the race.  You're going to do great.

Dirk, on the bike over the winter, dont focus on ovlume so much as quality, 2-4x of 1 hour can get you a LONG way. focused hard workouts at around threshold (1 hour) race pace.

At a minimum keep two of these workouts in there.

one of shorter intervals, something like 4x6 min, or 5x5 min on 2-3 min rest

One of longer intervals, 3x10 min, 2x20, or 1 x20 (if you do just one it needs to be HARD). on 2 min rest.

If you do a 3rd workout, make it more vo2max based, 5x5 min on 5 min rest and HAMMER them, or 10x2 min on 1 min rest.

all of those workouts can easily fit into an hour ride.

You'll have a blast at the race!!! And very very nice photo, she looks happy.

I got in a good run with some friends yesterday, a friend here is a coach with TnT and i went out and ran during their distance run of the week, 2 loops around the hilly valley forge national park as the sun was coming up! Ended up with a good 12 miles in 1:20 and got to see a beautiful park at sunrise.
