Anyone here packed their bikes for air travel?

I'm looking at two cases: Trico Iron Case and Tri All 3 Sports Velo Safe.  I'm leaning toward the Trico case simply due to size and cost.  It does require more diassembly of the bike than the 3 Sports, but this really isn't an issue for me.

Southwest seems to be pretty reasonable in price.  They charge $50 one way for the bike based on dimensions and weight.

OK.  It looks like most of you are wrapping up for the season.  So, what are your plans for the off-season?  Are you going to focus on a certain aspect so you will come back stronger next season?

Like I said earlier, I'm planning on taking some time off of running.  Instead, I'll be focusing on hiking for a while.  I have plans to hike the Grand Canyon with my oldest son in April.  Also, I've been wanting to incorporate stand-up paddling into my workouts.  As for specificity, I need to improve the swim.  I would like to do a couple swim clinics and work with another swim coach for a few months.

I still plan on doing a race here and there.  In February, my wife and I do a couples relay.  Each person does a 5k lap around around a lake.  The course is really fast.  It would be nice to hit a new 5K PR here.

I'm taking it easy now for a while now. I'll be in maintainence mode. That means I'll do less run/bike/swim but add in strenght training back in to build my skinny !@s legs!! LOL I'm also going to try and lose at least 10 more lbs, so I went back to an all organic diet.

Starting November I go back into base building. I'll concentrate on swimming since that is my weakest link. I'm going to tri-swim class starting November. Since cycling is soooo important in tri's and to me, I'm doing 2 computrainer sessions again this winter. I want to bump my Oly bikes to around a 23-24 average mph, and I'm hoping my HIM bikes will be around 21-22. Running will be less speedwork and more mileage building to gear up for HIM's and a marathon next season.

that's the plan so far!

Meulen - 2010-09-03 6:34 AM

Any of you guys doing a race this sunday out west?

Nothing here.  I've cleared my calender until September 25.
I'll be staying in North Las Vegas. I was just wondering,if I got a chance, I needed to make arrangements to see one of you guys race.

I'm bringing my running shoes. I plan on doing 10-12 miles on saturday night or sunday. Looks like the weather at night will be great!!

Tim, I'll be curious to know how your research turns out on bike transportation. I've looked at tribike transport for IMTX. That could very well be the only tri I ever fly for, so I doubt buying a bike case is more economical for me.

Their website says round trip service starts at $290. This race is getting expensive...

I'm taking a lower volume, higher intensity approach for the outseason.  I actually found a heated olympic size pool out here that I can swim in after the base pools close for $50/month, so I will continue steady work on that, but shorter/faster is the winter mantra!  My wife starts her marathon training next month, so I will scale mine back some so we actually see each other once in awhile.

I'm leaning toward buying a used case.  If all works well, your can definately borrow it for your race in Texas.  You will just need some tools and a little mechanical know-how.  Southwest definately seems to be the ticket.  There rates are cheaper than FedEx or UPS.

Decided to spring for a new pair of shoes today.  Headed to "Roadrunner" store here in Naperville and had them custom fit / mold a pair of insoles for me.  The guy brought out a bunch of pairs that fit my running style -- guess I need a stability shoe.  I gravitated towards the Asics as I've had great luck with them.  He then handed me a Nike Lunarglide+ 2.  The thing looks really funky -- I'd say gaudy -- but is light as a feather and he swore by it.  Tried it on and it felt great.  As they've got a 90 day no question return policy I decided, what the hey.  Got home and did some research and everything looked good.

My son came home after XC practice, saw them on the counter, and his eyes lit up.  I guess they're the shoe of choice with the boys and have been getting rave reviews for them.  Fortunately, he's now 1/2 size bigger than me so he can't swipe them.

Headed out this PM on my 3.4 mile route.  Wow!  Took 20 seconds / mile of my PR.  Averaged an 8:40 / mile pace.  If you guys are looking for a new pair of shoes, I'd defintely give this one a look.  While I'm sure the PR was not solely due to them, I definitely noticed my legs being much more comfortable.

Just  home from son's race.  He crashed -- literally.  Ran a 17:30 for the 3 mile course.  When we saw him at 1/4 mile he looked great.  At about 3/4 mile he was visibly limping / stride was way off.  Found out after that he got tangled up and went down hard on his hip, hitting a root.  Managed to finish 28th out of 200 in the sophomore race, but was very disappointed.  The guy he's been training with / neck-and-neck with finished 3rd with a 16:20.

That really sucks!!! They'll be other racees though. He still did great and it's commendable that hehung there.

God!!.... I love Vegas. Got up early and ran 14.68 miles. Definitely my longest run to date. It seemed almost effortless while enjoying the scenery and the weather. I need to buy a plac e out here!!

Nice! That's a big run anytime you go over 13.1, especially on vacation.

Not to upstage you or anything but I hammered out a 17 miler this morning. Yesterday I did 9.2...yes, that's 26.2 over 2 days. So far, the closest I've ever come to a marathon! The legs are up and recovering.

Question: Do you guys use a Road ID? I've been thinking about getting one for a while, just checked out the website. Any suggestions on which is better - wrist vs. ankle vs. dog tag? I think I'm leaning towards the ankle ID but wonder if you get nailed by a car and are knocked out, would the average person know to look at your ankle???

I do not have one, but I've been wanting to get one for some time now.

As for placement, I want the ankle.  From an EMS perspective, it will stand out more than the wrist of necklace that could be confused for jewelry.  While it is in our training to look for medical alerts bracelets, necklaces, etc., it sometimes can get over looked on the more hectic-serious calls.

Thats a nice run!

I'm jealous!  Those runs seem like a distant memory for me right now.  I went on a frickin', little 3 mile run before work today and my leg is sore.  I'm really over these injuries.

I've had both wrist and ankle.  I had the old woven material wrist ID, and that one tended to get skanked up and smelly from sweat.  I use the neoprene ankle ID now.  I like it much better.  And it has a reflective strip to boot.  Recommend you go w/ that one.  And it's one less thing on your arm if you wear a garmin, ion bracelet, etc.

brick94513 - 2010-09-03 6:42 AM OK.  It looks like most of you are wrapping up for the season.  So, what are your plans for the off-season?  Are you going to focus on a certain aspect so you will come back stronger next season?

I've had this question in the back of my mind for the last few days.  I hadn't really thought about it till you asked, and was just planning on biking/running, maintaining my ability and building base mileage.  My last two runs I focussed a bit on upping my cadence, and have decided this is going to be my focus while running in the off season.  Right now, just running as I feel good, my cadence is around 70-75 rpm, and if I really push it I can get up to 80-85, but it's difficult.  I'm going to continue running base miles, keeping it Z2 and pretty easy, but focus on getting up to a consistent 85-90 rpm.  So far, I've noticed when I consciously up the cadence, I run faster and of course have a correspondingly higher HR.  I can't maintain the faster pace and also keep it in Z2 right now.  I want to see if I can get my cadence up while staying in Z2.  Something to play with for a while anyway!

So, that's my plan for now!

Thinking back on my own question, I have to determine my priorities for next year.  As of right now, I feel I've hit a training plateau and I'm not able to break through to that next level of ability.  I'm not sure if this next level is attainable without assistance.  And, it is here that my dilemma lies.  Do I seek out a coach to adjust my training specificity and intensity?  I'm afraid that in venturing down this road may lead to lack of desire and apathy.  Or, on the other hand, do I continue on my own and possibly not progress or produce the results that I'm looking to achieve?  Sounds kind of like a mid-life crisis, eh?

Have a quote from Steven Covey that says all things are created twice, first mentally then physically.  Do you know what "that next level of ability" is?  That would seem to be the first place to start -- establish what the goal is (specific, measurable, action oriented, resources defined, time dependent / SMART).  My second question would be with regards to having a specific plan.  Have you been / are you willing to, work towards a specific plan that supports the goal?  Nothing revolutionary in either of the above items, but think that any coach is going to start with these, so you might as well take the time to "check the box" on both of them.  Now, if you've got these two nailed and you're still not making progress, it would seem that it's time to call in the "coaching calvary".

One other thought is a bit more off the wall.  Pick up a copy of "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect".  Goes through the mental aspect of that game.  I've seen quite a few lessons from this book that translate well to all areas of life (used a lot of the info for tournament bass fishing!).

From what I've seen -- and experienced -- discipline is the hardest thing in this sport.  Those that excel seem to have that characteristic to a very high degree.

Hope the above helps.

All right, back for some more swimming help.  After a few weeks of avoiding the water, have gotten back in over the last few days.  There's some really good news.  Swimming "long" and comfortably (i.e. not gagging / swallowing the pool) breathing on both sides.  Breath every third stroke.  My times are really strong as I can now do 50m in about 1:05 without pushing.  If I can simply keep this pace while stretching out the length gradually to 1500m, I'd be thrilled!

When I breath to the left (new side for me), feel very comfortable and "get" the air.  When I breath to the right, do not "get" the air / breath in is very shallow.  I've really been focusing on staying long, gliding and rotating versus lifting.  Can feel the glide much more so than ever before.  Balance still needs some work, but definitely feels better / backside is not sinking.

What's your thoughts on how to get more comfortable taking in air?

Objective is to slowly add distance to each set (right now 10 x 50m) and work up to 10 x 200m.

brick94513 - 2010-04-06 9:32 AM

NAME: Brick94513… Tim

STORY: My name is Tim and I’m addicted to endurance racing.  I reside in the San Francisco Bay Area of California.  38 years old.  On my days off from training and racing, I work as a firefighter-paramedic.

My main ambitions are XTERRA and endurance MTB racing.  I got started with triathlons as a bet between friends.  While the first race was less than stellar, especially the swim, it was memorable and set the hook.

Some milestones I hope to accomplish in the next few years are Ironman, Continental Divide Race, Colorado 500, Arizona Trail 300, Western States 100, and the Furnace Creek 508.

FAMILY STATUS: Married with three boys (9, 6, and 4)

CURRENT TRAINING: Currently, I don’t follow a strict plan pre se.  Instead, I commit to monthly volume targets.  The volume in each discipline will vacillate based on which “A” race is approaching.  My swim and run workouts are very structured, whereas my cycling tends to be more mileage oriented.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: 2010 will be a busy year.  My main focus will be on the Western Region XTERRA races.  I’m hoping to qualify to XTERRA Nationals this year in Park City, UT.  I’m also competing in the Northern California Endurance MTB series which consists of 8 hour, 24 hour, and 100 mile off-road XC racing.  In between these races, work, and family, I am hoping to squeeze in a few trail runs, Olympic distance triathlons, adventure race, and some additional MTB XC races.

2009 RACES:  I had quite a few races last year which are posted on my training log.  Some highlights: 1st and 2nd AG finish in two XTERRAs race and 1st and 4th Overall in two trail runs.

WEIGHTLOSS:  No thanks.  I’m already scrawny at 150 pounds.  I find it very hard to keep weight and upper body muscle mass.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: While I’m far from a USAT coach, I can provide direction, good information, and I’m not afraid to say “I don’t know.”  Plus, you will have the benefit of two mentors and two different perspectives from different backgrounds.

WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU:  To have fun.  Remember why you got involved in this lifestyle!  It is suppose to be fun!  We want a group that interacts no matter how trivial.  It would be nice to see the members post every day, inspire other members, and share experiences.  It’s about camaraderie.  In my opinion, these groups work so much better if you are chatty.

Interesting given what I just asked about a plan.....

brick94513 - 2010-09-06 4:02 PM Thinking back on my own question, I have to determine my priorities for next year.

Why do you think that having a coach will make you feel apathetic about a sport you love participating in?  There's no time requirement for coaching, why not check out some coaches and give one a shot for  a month or two and see how you feel about it?  You could always get yourself pointed in the direction you want, then continue self-coaching again.  For me, the big issue w/ coaching is the cost.  I talked to my bike fitter Saturday about picking me up as a client for the out season and she charges $300/month Surprised.  No way can I justify spending that kind of cash for it.

Did an extra shift at work, so been gone for 72 hours.  Got a little training in this morning, then home to get my kids from school.

You guys brought about some good points for me to consider about the coaching.  I appreciate the different perspectives.

I do have a plan.  I know where I want to go as far as results.  It's been my lack of results and injuries this year that have me questioning my current training regime.

Why I'm I worried about coaching making me lose interest in the sport?  I think like any hobby or sport there is a fine line between recreationl and becoming work.  If the training becomes so structured, I'm afraid of losing the enjoyment.  I never want to miss a ride, run, or swim with friends because my training schedule says I have to do a specific workout.

So, this leads to my next quandry.  Is my commitment to training conducive to the goals I want to obtain?

This is definately going to be an interesting off-season for me this year, both mentally and physically.
