Thanks, everyone!  It was just a small, local triathlon, so there were probably only 12 people in my age group (that time wouldn't have gotten me anywhere in a large tri).  Still, though, it is a huge booster, and I dramatically improved my bike time, which was my goal. I didn't panic on the swim either

I thought I would post my 18 mile experience and get thoughts.  It overall was a really great run for me, except I keep having calf cramping issues.  I probably could of drank more in the first 6 miles, but I guess I forgot and then got anal about it by 6 (getting hotter then).  What else can I do for my calf cramping . . . more strengthening? endurolytes (not sure where I will stash more crap in my belt)?  Any thoughts will help. Thanks

No highs and lows on the gels!!!  I think I will stick with them.  Went with the powerbar energy bar for pre-run.

----------------

18 miler along algonquin trail. Out and back. Aid stations at 3.25 and 6 miles. Nutrition seemed to be better. About 10 8 oz bottles total, but after 6 miles was more anal about sipping on every 1 minute rest (also getting hotter at that point). Also, took gel sips every 30 minutes.

Nutrition:
+2 bottles - Started
+1 bottled added - 3.25 (drank 2 by 6 mile aid station
+3 at 6 mile aid station for total of 4 bottles since next aid would be at 12 miles.(drank all 4 in those 6 miles
+ 3 bottles at aid station 12
+1 bottle of water at last aid station 15 miles
10 bottles total. Need to sip more earlier.

First several miles went good. Ran 11's on the run and about 14-15 on the walk. Was tight on the back of my legs by 7. By 12 my calves were VERY STRONGLY THREATENING to cramp and tried to at the 12 mile aid station. Last 2 miles were hard cuz of calves were tight and ready to cramp at any time. Otherwise, the run went very well. If I can get rid of the cramping, run will be much, much better.

Heat & race related question:  Muncie 70.3 was this past weekend, about 90 degrees.  A friend of mine posted she should been pulled from the race at 4 miles as her HR was 200+ (she is in the 50-54 age group and middle of the pack).  She said she was incorherent and totally oblivious.  I guess the volunteer poured water on her, gave her pepsi and a banana and she was able to finish.

I know people get a little nuts racing, but when you get to this point are you unable to make decisions for yourself and as you are in the red zone, you go further cuz you don't know any better?  You refuse to quit?

She then posted today how she was glad she finished and pushed her comfort zone . . . . I was like, you didn't push your comfort zone, you surpassed and and entered the hospital zone.  It this not that big of a deal and I am overly worried, or do people tend to brush it off after.  It seems to me that was getting or was very serious

And just wondering if you watched alot of races with Lieto, his "twig and berries" seem to get very hot (don't notice it with anyone else).  Is that the last stage of heat/overheat.  He seems to grab himself alot and pour ice/water down.  Seems like that is the last straw for Lieto before he starts walking.

10.8 OZ of fluid for an 18 mile run is not much.  You need to schedule drinking and eating.  once ypou fall behind you cant catch up.  The cramps are likely fitness related not hydration.  Keep at it.  Great effort, out for an 18 miler of my own now after blowing it off yesterday.
