kaburns1214 - 2012-07-09 8:10 AM

Had my first really solid week in a long time (except for the swim, I know, I know . . .If Bryan were allowed to post I know there would be comment on this one ):

Bike:11h 23m 58s  - 185.66 Mi
Run:6h 01m 52s  - 39.07 Mi
Swim:1h 47m 14s  - 6300 Yd
Yoga:1h 30m

This week will be even bigger.  Figure if I can make it through this week, I'll be ok for IMNYC.

Very nice!  Run total alone would have me hobbling around the house  Keep it up, Kelly!

carrie639 - 2012-07-09 9:58 AM Week #6 .... Gonna get a couple 2 miles swims in this week (Wed & Sat).  Water temps are 85 and above at lakes around here!!!

The lake temps have me a little concerned for my next 2 races.  Cleveland tri is rarely wetsuit legal, so I expected it, but now I'm worried about Cedar Point.  I was going to use birthday money to fund a full wetsuit, but I'll save my $ if I won't be able to use it!

Ran into a couple at the pool this morning that does tris.  They race strictly non-branded events.  Gave me an interesting list of events and their takes on them.  I'm gonna spend some time googling today.  Redman in Oklahoma seems interesting.  I've heard good feedback from several places and the entry for the full never goes over $400.

You can also look at renting a wetsuit at Cedar Point.  I believe the Cedar Point swim is in Lake Erie, which I think stays pretty cool because its so large.

Thanks everyone! It was a challenging race and I think it prepared me for what I will see in the oly in a few weeks.

Kelly! Nice week! I need to get my miles up more for the marathon in October!

I've never swum in a full before.  I wonder if I can test it in the lake the day before the race.  It would really stink to have some sort of anxiety attack because I'd never worn it prior to the race.  I am going to look into rentals.......thanks!

If its a high quality suit that fits (e.g. a Blue Seventy Helix) you should feel fine.  The neoprene in the shoulders in so thin and flexible you shouldn't feel any constriction issues.  Plus I believe the way it works it that you pick up the suit the day before the event.

The Helix is the one they offer (and another Blue Seventy suit, which is $25 more I believe).  I think I'm going to rent one.  I just have to figure out what size I would be without a proper fitting.

I agree with the renting.  Thinking about doing that with wheels for IMTX.

Go to a tri/bike shop that sells them and try them on.  I think they tend to run a bit bigger than the Blue Seventy size chart indicates.

OK.  For those who have done an IM how far away from transition or the course is your hotel normally?

Walking distance!  Louisville I had horrible blisters and the 2 blocks I had to walk to the hotel was about all I could do.  Wisconsin I was fine, but it was nice to be able to walk to start and walk back after the finish (after drinking of course!).  Vineman will be interesting, the hotel is quite a drive away from the start and from the finish.  But it was all I could find for under $350/night.

If you can find a place within walking distance I would recommend it.  It just makes everything easier, plus you're right in the middle of all the excitement!

Kinda what I figured.  I think Cindy is a bit taken aback by the prices.

I was 1.5 miles from the start/finsh at IMLP and had no issue walking to and from.

At IMAZ we were 15 minutes away but Shaun picked me up right at the finish line and drove me home.

At IMFL we were about 1 mile from the finish and I walked back to the hotel, showered, changed, had dinner and then walked back to finish to wait for Shaun.

At IMKY we were less than .5 miles from the finish and I could barely make it home.

If Cindy can pick you up close (e.g. the mall parking lot) and drive you should be ok sleeping in your own bed.

Good point Kelly makes.  If the finish is somewhere that you can be picked up easily, stay someplace cheaper.  And if you live within driving distance, save the money for all the finisher stuff you want to buy.  It's spendy!

interesting! Can't believe the lengths some people will go to bandit a race.

I know some saw this on my FB page earlier but wanted to toot my horn on here:

This past weekend marked my two year anniversary for being Diet Coke (and all soda) free! The big deal is I was WELL MORE than a 12 pack a day drinker for easily 25+ years. Quit cold turkey (and suffered for a couple of weeks), but now I don't miss it one bit.

Good for you Steve, you were quite the soda drinker!  I pretty much gave up Diet Coke cold turkey one day.  It just all of a sudden didn't taste good to me anymore, it was the weirdest thing.  (I wish ice cream and beer would stop tasting good one day!)  I was not a big soda drinker, maybe 1 a day, so it wasn't a big deal.  I'll have one occasionally now, like after a race it sounds good, but it's pretty rare.

Now coffee is a whole different story with me!  I've given it up several times, and suffered through the caffeine headaches for a few days.  I've lasted probably 6 months at the most, but always go back to drinking it.  I think it's more of a comfort thing, it just tastes so good in the morning.  I only have 2 cups (ok, they are large cups) a day, and will not have any caffeine after noon or I can't sleep.

Anyway, that's quite an accomplishment for you!  Good job!

x2, Steve!  It's great to cut out artificial things from your diet.

I'm with you on the coffee, Karen.  I love, love, love it, and I will never give it up.  2 large cups in the morning and 1 medium cup in the afternoon.  I never have problems sleeping - like a log even if I have coffee at 8 p.m.  My mother says that will change in my 40s......we'll see  I used to put Half & Half and Splenda in my coffee, but last year I switched to milk and sugar (like Steve, cutting out the artificial).  Never been a soda drinker.....once or twice a year I'll have a Pepsi (regular...no diet).

Z3 intervals on the bike this morning + a T run.  My legs are toast.  I want to do some core work (mostly abs and glutes) this afternoon.  I want to make my midsection look like I didn't have 4 kids in 5 years, but I'm pretty sure that's not possible.  Plus, it can't hurt the running and biking to build up the abdominals.

Anyway, at what point do you all drink some sort of recovery drink?  Or do you at all?  I haven't been doing that at all this season.....just have a regular breakfast.  I guess I did have a big thing of chocolate milk after my hot HM in May, but that's only because they were handing them out at the finish line, and I was famished and dehydrated.  I'm wondering if some sort of recovery drink (even if it's a smoothie) would help me bounce back after 2 hour + training sessions.  This morning I did the bike and run on just water, but I think a gel an hour into the bike would have helped, as I felt pretty spent on the t run.  I am used to doing my morning sessions on an empty stomach, but some of them are running longer than before.  Anyone?

I reread what I posted and realized I had 2 different questions in there.

Should I have taken in a gel about an hour into that training session?

Do you use recovery products for efforts longer than 2 hours?

I simplified
