Tony thanks for the chuckle, I am happy to hear you and your bike are ok.
Had a melt down on the bike Monday I am pretty sure it was lack of fuel and hydration but it had me panicking. I was supposed to ride about 75 miles and made it 48.77 to be exact, and had to call for a ride and I am pretty sure there were tears involved I was out of water and yes it was hot and humid and thinking back I had not eaten good for a few days. So I got home was nauseous, got the chills and a slight headache almost all day yesterday I was still in a funk and made sure i ate well, managed to complete my run and today got in my bike and run. I had been feeling really defeated thinking what have I signed up for....then our Bib numbers were posted And I got a little excited so I am 946.
So hopefully August will be a better training month because Looking at July it doesn't look too good.

Oh man!  Hope you're feeling alright now!  I feel like that's something that happens to everyone though, so I would take it as a lesson learned and look forward to the remaining weeks of training- you've come so far!!  I am excited for you that you got your bib number, and I will be following you on race day online

JoAnne I agree with Samantha I think this happens to all of us. Don't get down on yourself about that and you did the right thing by ending your ride. This happened to my friend at IMLP this year as nutrition caused him to have to DNF. Fortunately for him he is now doing IMLOU. However better to have that happen now instead of during the IM. Like Samantha said lesson learned and I'm glad to hear that you are alright. Plus you've still got over 5 weeks to go so keep working hard it and I am looking forward to tracking you during the race.

Ok folks.  It's been a busy week so far but I got a chance to write up my race report finally.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=453792

It was a great time.  I got 5 other friends from my area to go out and do this race.  Three of them had never done an Xterra and are novice mtn bikers.  I don't think any of you are mtn bikers or xterra racers so let me tell you that doing Xterra without being a mtn biker is a big challenge and shows a ton of courage.

I told someone that "Xterra is triathlon with an edge".

Jo, classic signs of heat sickness.  This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with bike fitness so don't despair.  Understand that you will need about 5 days to be normal.  In that time you may feel a bit weak but the most important thing to know is that you will be more susceptible to heat sickness for about a week so watch that.

strikyr - 2012-08-01 7:38 AM I had a very embarrassing moment yesterday. I actually went over while I was riding my bike on the trainer. I am not sure what happened but I suspect I did not have the trainer locked in properly. When it was happening all I could think was I can't believe this is happening and OMG my bike! In any case the bike is fine as I was in a panic checking it out and BTW I am fine too but what a scare for me. I have another race this weekend and the last thing I need is for something to go wrong with the bike.

You are a real cyclist now.  Even if you are fatally wounded your first thought will be for your bike!

For the swim experts...  Is it OK to swim every day or do you need to take days off.  I don't want to do like I did in running and do to much to fast and get injured.  Remember I have just started swimming and have 0 base.  I am just learning to swim, so can I really increase the distance, like going from 400 yards to 600 to 1,000 and not get hurt?

2nd question  Is swimming like running in that the first 10 minutes or so is bad, then you get in a grove and can just go and go.

In the general sense it IS ok to swim every day.  You won't need days off for the sake of general recovery.  But at any time that you feel a shoulder pain getting worse day by day you need to nip that in the bud.  Many times we can find an adjustment to your swim technique to fix it.

but if you have no such thing pop up, then go crazy.

And yes, swimming even more than running has that first few minutes of feeling crappy and the 'groove' you get in may be more pronounced.

Skimping on the responses a little here, but I'm having a minor panic about my Olympic this weekend...I'm probably under trained for it, but you can be sure I'll be ready to go. I need to update my logs though - I've done more than it shows!

Taper-wise I'm not really going to, except that'll I'll back down the intensity starting tomorrow and the volume on Friday. Saturday I plan on running through each sport just to knock the rust off... Should this be done as a "brick" with like 10-15 minute transitions or as three separate workouts.

Also - I moved a spacer out from under my bars on my bike... but now I'm not convinced they are completely straight with the wheel... Is there a tool or a trick to making sure it's straight? I'm not an awful mechanic, I've just convinced myself it's no longer straight, so in my mind it never will be!

I'll have more paranoia for you tomorrow I'm sure!

John

It's been kind of busy for me this week.  I have been trying to get whatever training I can fit in and still be able to get stuff around the house done before leaving for another race this weekend.

I think you'll be fine to start your taper as soon as you were talking about.  I would also do your plan your Saturday WO's as a brick but with a low intensity to stay fresh.  I would also suggest that you practice like it were a transition.

As far as the spacer adjustment you made, I don't know of a tool used other than your eye balls.  You can get it close and take it for a spin but take your tools with you.  If you feel you're still in need of a little better alignment, pull off and make the adjustments.

Hey Junkies, Just dropping a quick note in here. Got short workouts in today even though were are on vacation. On a short ride with the kids today my mother-in-law took us to a public velodrome! I only had my mountain bike at the time but I still got out there and did a couple of laps. Those corners are steep! Hope everyone's training is going well.

The velodrome sounds pretty amazing.  I would like to hit one of them sometime but there isn't one around here other than Indianapolis which is about 2 hours south.  I'm not planning a trip down there just for that but I am racing an Oly there this weekend.

So question regarding the heat...I have NEVER had a problem with it so I was reading an article that Mark Allen had just sent and he mentioned salt tablets, do you guys use them? When, how often and brand? Also Iam looking for a good per and post drink suggestions anyone?

So I call home last night from work and my husband tells me we have no power he was here and he heard some popping sound only to look out and see the neighbors big huge tree on fire and the line sparking needless to say I got home about 9 still no power and 2 guys are working in the dark gettin oour power on, it gave me more of an appreciation of the luxuries we take for granite. The power came on shortly after I got home so all is good
I also want to say thanks for all the support from everyone, it is amazing to me how people I haven't even meet can make me feel so much better and stronger. After my parents died my family sort of fell apart so not too much encouragement from the siblings. Sorry to be so Emmo Iam thinking it is left overs from Monday lol
Have a great day everyone!

JoAnne sorry to hear about you losing power last night, glad to hear that the power company got it restored. I have not yet looked into using salt tablets so I can't comment on that one but for the recovery drink I have been using plain old chocolate milk. I believed tht guys mentioned that here in some previous posts. I haven't really used anything special pre and post workout. I also echo Karl's sentiments as we are all here to support each other.

All of us woke up around 3AM.  Not sure why.  The dogs weren't barking and it was dead silent outside.  I couldn't get back to sleep for about an hour and a half!  I checked to see if there was an earthquake around that time.  The only one I found was in central Peru.  I doubt that one woke us up.  Very strange.  Now I'm exhausted.  I'll be skipping my last planned run before the Hill Climb on Saturday.

The typical diet contains far more sodium than your body needs so in most cases you don't need to add salt tablets for 'recovery'.

They have their value for use DURING a long workout or race.  If you are drinking water for hydration then you will be lowering your body's sodium levels (you are losing it in your sweat and replacing that sweat with just water).  So a sodium tablet per water bottle is OK....or you can just hydrate in these cases with a sports drink that replaces the electrolytes for you.

Pre-drink?  Well, if you drink something like Gatorade with some carbs right before you start you may have a leg up on glycogen depletion, but depleting glycogen is sort of the point for certain long workouts.  But right around the start of a race it's probably a fine idea.   Actually anything that won't cause you stomach upset is a fine pre-race drink, even if it's a Rockstar, Redbull or Pepsi.

Post drink, you need (in order of priority):

  1. Fluid!
  2. Carbs
  3. Protein
  4. Electrolytes

You can find the first 3 in something as simple as chocolate milk (actually, even plain milk).  But to get all 4 in one drink you are looking at something like the name brand sports drinks---in their 'recovery' formula.

But if you drink (anything) and snack on some fruit, cookies, even candy then all you need in addition is at least 10g of protein.  And that can come from any source you want.  I favor whey protein concentrate because it's so easy.

I must tell you a terrible story.  Most of you have experienced that sense of horror where your heart falls in to your stomach.

I was mtn biking with my daughter last night and it was a pleasant 6 mile ride where we worked on some skills.  As we finished we rode down a steep gravel road to the parking area.  I had just told her to control her speed because the traction was poor when she suddenly came up to a deep ditch created by water run off.  It was about 1 foot across and maybe 8-9" deep.

She hit it hard and crashed.

I don't remember getting off my bike but I was standing there next to her practically before she stopped sliding.  Maybe I was teleported by Father-Magic.

The horror I felt was definitely greater than hers.  But she did have a short wave of extreme pain because her shin had landed on her pedal and taken quite a bang.  So after what seemed like forever (probably 30 seconds) her shaking stopped and she was Ok to get up.  I took her to the truck and lifted the hatch and sat her back there while I cleaned up her wounds.

Fortunately I always keep the following in the car:

  • first aid kit
  • baby wipes
  • black towel (stains are invisible)
  • water

So we were able to clean her up, apply disinfectant, apply bandages and just generally try to heal her spirit (which didn't need doing...I just needed to heal my own!)

After a while she wanted to go back to the crash and we pieced together what had happened.  She saw the gully at the last moment but committed to riding over it.  We looked at the gully and the marks in the gravel/sand there and this is what we decided...the gully was at a 45 degree angle to her direction of travel.  When the front tire hit the far side it didn't climb up and out, it slid sideways on the sand which pulled the front wheel of the bike out from under her.

Her biggest regret was that the crash wasn't 'cool' enough.  It's pretty mundane to say she crashed going down a road.  So we decided to describe it this way:  She was traveling down a steep hill at a high rate of speed and was jumping a gully when her front wheel washed out and threw her to the ground.

That sounds better than "crashed going down a road".

She has a great attitude toward mtn biking.  She was already prepared for crashes and even injury and realizes it's all a part of mtn biking.  She didn't regret going or give a second thought to whether she really wants to learn how.

Jeff I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's crash but I am very happy to hear that she is alright. I think I would have been in an absolute panic if I was in your situation as I can only imagine how you must have felt. Again I'm glad she is ok and it's kinda a cool that she took it in stride and is wearing it like a badge of honor. She's tough that's for sure.

Matt I was sort of thinking the same thing but did not want to say that or even mention anything like paranormal activity, UFO's and extraterrestrials but I admit those thoughts crossed my mind when I read Tracy's post. I probably watch that stuff way too much on TV.
