I had my final race (multi-sport anyway) for the year a couple of weekends ago. I finally got my race report put together. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... What important events have I missed? Do I see something about Dirk with an injury? I will bet it's related to the knee that took a hit in the legendary Pultite crash of 2013... Ragnar Tennessee is coming up and Karl's wife will be in my part of the country. Later. Jeff great to see you checking in, hope all is well and looking forward to reading the RR later on this evening. |

I knew you had been missing for a while and thought about checking with you to see if you had chosen to have the surgeries done on your feet yet. It's great to see yo checking in! Yes! is the answer to your question about my knee. I think, in retrospect, that the injury is related to the bike crash. Without giving all of the details, I had been able to run after the crash but cycling was not going so well. In the end I think the running "felt ok" because I had altered my gait, etc. to overcome some of the issues that were a direct cause of the crash. Skip ahead about a month and I was running my HM and on target to finish at 1:29 and my knee blew up. It is also the same knee I had the ACL reconstruction on and a second meniscectomy a few years later. The good news is that I feel like I'm going to be fine. I hope to be running again in about 3 weeks and I'll build back up to a respectable weekly volume over the following 2-3 months and then dive into IM training. Let us know what you've decided about your foot surgery. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by bswcpa All's well with me. Got my 910XT up and running. Did a couple runs - one road and one trail and one pool swim. It's SO cool that it keeps track of the swim distance. Cool, cool!! I've read a bunch of info on heart rate zones and there's a lot of conflicting stuff out there. I've been surprised to see my rate so high when I think I'm in zone 2. What method have you guys used to determine your zones? I trust you. Warren is correct about testing. The only thing I would mention is plan on suffering when you do the testing. The only way to accurately complete the testing is to work as hard as a you can for the testing phase. If done correctly it is painful, so plan on not enjoying yourself for those particular workouts. The good news is that the workout/testing is usually only 20-30 minutes. Here's the BT threshold testing protocol. It describes the testing for all three disciplines but the swim is not HR since HR monitors don't work in the water. I have used the run and bike testing and I have seen a bit of success from them both. I think Tony may have mentioned something about the frequency of testing and that can be important too, although I haven't done any intentional run tests for a few years. |

I was beginning to worry you mixed to much bleach and ammonia for your stanky laundry Funny you should mention that. I've been continuing the experiments. The bleach/ammonia trick worked wonderfully! But I have also had success with another approach. I have had some tech T's that took to smelling and have succeeded in killing the stink in the microwave. I recommend you be careful not to melt your shirt. Hand wash it first. Then wring out the excess water. With it damp, put it in the microwave and find just the right amount of time to cause steam to develop, but stop before melting the shirt or the glues if doing shoes. All stinky bacteria should be dead. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Thanks for the info on heart rate zones, WARREN, TONY and DIRK. Excuse my ignorance on this but why is your HR different on the bike than on the run? I was cranking it on the bike yesterday and got HR to 145 then on my run today I immediately went to low 150s just jogging down my driveway. That's confusing to me. Welcome back, JEFF!! I'll check on your RR tomorrow but wanted you to know you've been missed. Keep up the good running, VERO! We're having lovely weather in the Midwest today. Hope you all have sunshine where you are. Have a great weekend! |

Dina I've never thought about it that way but now that you mention it I wish I could swim for as long as I can run lol. I would even take swimming as well as I can run lol. I'd even take liking swimming as much as I do running but I just don't love swimming lol. One of these days I will but I'm not sure when that's going to be. |

Have a great weekend! Brenda I'm no expert but your HR zones will be different typically for running than for biking. I think I've read that it's because more muscles are involved in running and it requires more oxygen to be delivered in your bloodstream hence the higher HR. Again I'd defer to the experts here as always. |

I'll check on your RR tomorrow but wanted you to know you've been missed. Keep up the good running, VERO! We're having lovely weather in the Midwest today. Hope you all have sunshine where you are. Have a great weekend! I'm going to put a very hurried response here, but this is a good question. your heart rate is determined by your body's oxygen demands. But it's not always as simple as going faster/harder until the heart can't keep up. The limiter isn't always the heart. There are other processes that may be limiting your performance and the heart doesn't need to beat any faster so it doesn't. Some of these limiters: 1) your perceived exertion. If you just don't 'want' to run/bike faster then that's your limiter. 2) your blood's oxygen carrying capacity (and/or CO2 carrying capacity going the other way) 3) your lungs' ability to transfer gasses in and out using the alveoli 4) your muscle cells' ability to process oxygen and glycogen to make ATP (Krebs cycle) 5) your heart's pumping capacity If you reach 1-4 before reaching 5 then your HR won't go to max....so a lot of times when we are doing a max HR test, we are only finding out how fast our heart beats when we reach one of the other limiters. Now, how does that apply here? I can reach a higher HR these days on the bike than on the run because whatever limiter I hit when running I don't hit when cycling. My guess is that you reach a higher HR running because when cycling your limiter is #4, but that is not the limiter for you when running. Running has the added challenge of moving up and down with every step. There are some theories that this makes running more demanding than it otherwise would be simply because your cardiovascular system has to contend with the increasing and decreasing gravity during your free-fall and landing during each stride. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED 2.4 mile OWS today... did the same exact swim last month and was 15 min faster today w/ more chop, so wetsuit does in fact make a pretty big difference. Question for anyone with knowledge: I'm doing the beginner training plan found here on BT for my IM. The plan has been great. However, I cant find anywhere that it advises me on how to execute race day. For example - what zones to stay in on bike and run. Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Karl congrats on volunteering for IMFL. Yes your spot is probably worth gold lol, very tough race to get into. Karl why don't you just sign up already yourself? Will I think I tried to stay within my HR zones I trained in. On the bike I did less on HR and more on PE. I just couldn't look at my watch while I was trying to navigate the course. For the run I tried to stay in Z2 and would check now and then but I was also kind of checking my avg pace time more than my HR. I guess again I did it more on PE than HR for the run. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I got my second ever mtn bike ride in today. I took a trip out to Montauk and rode in Hither Woods park. They have some great and very scenic trails. Some are pretty easy some are pretty challenging. Overall I think I did very well. We rode for 3 hours and got in over 18 miles. We did stop a lot and there was a lot of sand on some parts of the trails especially around the dunes by the beach which by the way was pretty awesome. The views of the LI sound were just awesome from there. I hope to get out there again and ride I had a great time today. I'm also getting a little better, need to keep riding but defintiely making progress. When I got right I could really fly and when I had good momentum I could make it up the hills but I have found when you lose momentum like going up hill and your foot goes down you will be walking the bike up that hill lol. Still I am really enjoying the mtn biking and I see where this is going to help me get better overall on the bike. |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Will, the IMFL race is Nov. 2, you would need to get up w/ me during the day to get my shirt and be in line very early Sun the 3rd. Yes it is a very flat course, swim in the ocean, it is just an awesome course. It fills up so fast because it is fast and a good qualifying event for Kona. Let me know, I think wife already has given hers but I'm offering mine to the 1st Junkie. Yes it fill up very fast. Tony, the reason I don't do it is the 4 letter word... SWIM Tony, also good to see you are enjoying your new bike. When is your 1st off road triathlon? |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED WOW - Junkies, somebody other than me better jump on that IM offer . Karl too bad we can't do a team or I would totally come swim for you and let you do the rest! Well I finally bought a road bike yesterday. We found a guy who refurbs used bikes in STL. We had to go to the city for a family reunion yesterday so we made an appointment. He had 4 choices in my size - I ended up with a Raleigh Professional. It is a steel frame with campagnolo bike components. It is older (2003) but in seriously great condition. Only one little scuff and some tape keeping a decal on. My searches on craigslist were coming up with newer bikes but a lot lower end components in my price range. This one is older but better components - fingers crossed I made a good choice. I just really didn't want to go totally cheap and end up with another bike I was disappointed in. JEFF if your out there I may need some help with fit! I'll get some pics up if you'll be around any. Or any Junkies really but it seems like Jeff is the one who replies most to fit questions. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Karl great to see you offer up the spot to one the Junkies as that is a hot ticket. As bad a swimmer as I am if I can do the IM swim you could too. Besides it's wet suit legal. I'd like to do an Xterra as well but I may have to wait until 2015 to do that unless I can do one after IMMT. Dina congrats on the new bike. It sounds like you got a really good bike and I'm glad to hear it was reasonably priced. Post a pic when you get it and let us know how you like it. Did my last triathlon of the season today, the unofficial wildwood warrior sprint triathlon. It went off pretty well no safety issues which was our number one concern. The swim in the lake was a little cold but not unbearable. I had an uneventful swim, bike and run and got to meet a lot of people that I've not met before so it was nice to see everyone come down and say hello even if they were not participating in the race. Great get together afterwards. Now that I'm done with the triathlon stuff I want to hit the trails more to mtn and run. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Yes, Karl - if it's wetsuit legal you should re-think... Have you ever worn a wetsuit? I'm convinced that it's pretty much impossible to drown in a wetsuit. Even though I've said there's no way I can do another full distance (time commitment), I was seriously considering your offer just b/c of how hard it is to get into... that might be my only chance... ha. BUT, I'll still be in NC on Nov. 2, so I guess that's my sign that I shouldn't do it. If you wont reconsider then I guess Dirk is going to have to step up. Somebody needs to b/c that is a great offer! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Karl I'm not going to try and talk you into doing it but you definitely could get yourself ready to do it. You would have plenty of time and it's much easier IMO to swim with the wetsuit. Like Will said you won't drown and like I said if I could do the IM swim anybody can and I really mean that. I'm definitely out on your offer Karl as much as it would appeal to me to do it I know my wife would either divorce me or kill me lol or both if that is possible. I'd love to do IMFL though at some point. You know if Jenn didn't already sign up for IMLT she'd probably be a good candidate. Thanks Karl and same to you. I think you had a great season this year and I would agree with you, I accomplished more than I ever thought I could and I had a great time doing that this year. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED It sure is quiet on the Junkie front today and I don't think that's happened since this session opened. I know another mentor session will be opening up in December and it starts getting quiet until then. Please OH GREAT MENTOR LEADERS DIRK, JEFF, WARREN and JONATHAN (who's disappeared but who we love any ways), please tell me you're going to continue with another Junkie group for winter. Congratulations, DINA on your bike purchase! What's the color scheme? Please post a picture of your new baby. Hope you're able to find a saddle that works for you and that makes you happy to ride. WILL - 5 DAYS!! (I'm doing the countdown just in case you don't know it). . I'm sure you're going over your packing list a gazillion times. I saw some other folks post about the cold weather so hopefully you'll find some layers at the expo that'll help out. Make sure you increase your credit limit on your cards - there'll probably be so many fun things you'll want to buy. You are such a sweetheart to offer your IMFL spot, KARL! Unfortunately I'm out of the running for it but I sure appreciate you offering. Glad you had fun at your last tri of the season, TONY. Sounds like it was the perfect ending to a great year for you. Go hit those trails but please be careful! Hope everyone is having a marvelous Monday!
