Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by pistuo 2.4 mile OWS today... did the same exact swim last month and was 15 min faster today w/ more chop, so wetsuit does in fact make a pretty big difference. Question for anyone with knowledge: I'm doing the beginner training plan found here on BT for my IM. The plan has been great. However, I cant find anywhere that it advises me on how to execute race day. For example - what zones to stay in on bike and run. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Sorry for the late return. My suggestion would be similar to the way Tony executed his IM. Make everything leading up to the run easy ans almost effortless. No speed records need to be attained. You yourself have stated this is a finishing goal and you aren't looking for a particular time goal, per se. To be more specific, the swim should be pretty easy. You don't need to expend a lot of energy swimming, so target something easy with a nice rhythm and as little stress as possible. Focus on how easy things feel rather than how fast you are or are not going. If you execute the bike properly you should be questioning if you are riding hard enough the entire ride. You should be thinking; "I can ride much harder and finish faster." The problem is following through with this plan. One of the keys to IM is staying within the plan but be prepared change if required. But only if REQUIRED!! I also know you're concerned about the weather conditions, I would be too! It is still supposed to be very cool in the morning and coming out of the swim and onto the bike could be brutal. You'll need to be prepared to take a little longer in T1 to add some layers that can be removed while riding as the temp comes up and your body heat follows. My suggestion would be a cycling jersey with arm warmers and a jacket and maybe some leg warmers that can be pulled down to your ankles without stopping. I don't think the run is going to be an issue with the weather, as long as you don't have a problem running in a cycling jersey or taking the time to change that in T2. BTW, when are you leaving Texas? Do you have a plan for you carb loading meals and restaurants yet? Italian with some lean protein is going to be best. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by bswcpa It sure is quiet on the Junkie front today and I don't think that's happened since this session opened. I know another mentor session will be opening up in December and it starts getting quiet until then. Please OH GREAT MENTOR LEADERS DIRK, JEFF, WARREN and JONATHAN (who's disappeared but who we love any ways), please tell me you're going to continue with another Junkie group for winter. I will only speak for myself as the rest of us (mentors) haven't discussed the continuation of the Junkies, but we're likely to begin that discussion in another month or so, I am certainly in for another go round. My thought currently are that we may have to scale things back in a new group a touch. Meaning not expanding the group much. Rather, my current thoughts would be to keep everyone we currently have and maybe welcome one or two more.

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Ok, by the time some of you will see this you will have already noticed my status on facebook. I am feeling incredibly good right now!! My PT (who is awesome BTW) seems to believe I may be able to begin running again in the next couple of weeks. At PT tonight I mentioned to him that I had been targeting November 1 (ish) as a target to get back on my running legs again. He agreed that with the current progress that should be doable. I almost exploded right there!! My feelings of relief and joy were astounding. You can't imagine how grateful I am to have something like that said to me. Todd has provided me with the best possible chances of getting back on my way to IMWI without surgery. It's hard to imagine that about 4 weeks ago I was feeling like I may not be able to run until January because of a possible surgery and the long rehab process. I can still feel the despair after I finished the HM and the following days and lack of mobility that came from my injury. I still bring into question my lack of sense for not DNF-ing and having to go through all of this. However, truth be told, had I not become injured I may have continued to try to run with my plantar still causing issues. This could have found it's way into my IM training and caused more serious issues late in my training. So, I guess what I'm saying, this injury may be, as others have questioned, a blessing in disguise. I still covet your prayers for my health and well being as I continue on my journey. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Below is the link where you can track me during the ironman this Saturday. My bib # is 613. Nothing will show up until I exit the water. Just FYI for everyone, this course is much easier than the one Tony dominated a few weeks ago. So if I happen to somehow come in below his time, just know that he's still twice the man I am. Some background: I've only ever done 3 triathlons (2 sprints and 1 HIM) I took a year off before starting to train for this IM When I started in 2010, I had never been on a road bike or swam before This is the first race that I have trained for w/ HR. Hoping that helps me during execution. SWIM: I feel pretty confident about the swim, but we'll see what happens once I'm in the water with a thousand people... BIKE: I feel adequate here. I did a little more than the plan called for and was just starting to feel strong a few weeks ago. Hopefully I'm peaking at the right time, but still wish I was a little stronger on the bike. RUN: As Dirk has pointed out, my run training has been lite... but I did complete 90% of the running in my training plan, so I'm "trusting the plan". I feel the run is definitely my weakest sport. http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=live_timing&eventID... |

Dude, I haven't been doing jack during the taper... check my logs.. ha! In fact, I've done LESS than recommended (but not much). Since I'm leaving for 3 weeks, I've been so busy trying to get everything ready at work and home... I definitely feel blah, but everyone says that's normal... hoping they are right and I am fresh for race day... As for eating, haven't really been paying any attention to it... just ate Chik fil a for dinner... I leave first thing Wednesday morning! 2 day drive w/ a baby! let's do this. |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dirk, glad to see the knee is progressing along. And your probably right it was a blessing in disguise! Will, start thinking warm thoughts now and you will be alright! I agree with the layers on the bike though, comfort is important! Who would even consider the junkies not coming back? I think now instead of 4 mentors we have about 10 with each of you giving great advice, me I just sit in the background sucking up all the energy! . On my front I am progressing well in my running, holding around 30 mpw but also getting in some intensity runs to work on the oxygen depletion! This past weekend I ran 2 5k's, the 1st one on Saturday was a little short and I ran a 21:20 and won! Of course the weather was nasty so no one showed up! Sunday I ran another at the exact same time of 21:20 and this course was accurate! Missed a PR by 3s but finished strong with my 3rd mile being faster than the 2nd mile! Then right after the race I ran another 3 miles at 8:45 pace, legs were stiff but not bad Overall goal is to get under 1:40 in my HM in November and hopefully find a 5k in December so I can go under 21! Then my 2013 goals will be met! at some point in all of this though I need to get back to tri training! |

Easy swim, ride the bike you should not the bike you could. If you are a little conservative on the bike that's alright you'll make it up on the run. Also I heard the water temp is 72 degrees but the weather has been a little cool down there. I have two friends doing B2B as well so you'll be in good company and they've been tracking all the weather stuff like you have I'm sure. |

You put a lot of work in on the bike and done very well, I don't think you have anything to worry about there. Now for the run nothing you do in training will dictate how well you do on the run, what you do on the bike that day and how you take care of your nutrition is what dictates how your run will go. You're prepared very well for this and I don't think it really matter what your background is, you've done all the work to be ready. Honestly I had doubt right up until the moment the cannon went off and I was in the water. It was a little more so being the swim conditions were terrible that day. Just listen to the one voice in your head that believes you can do it. It will guide you along all day. If you have a bad moment think about your family and friends and the things that are important to you. Those moments will pass plus you've got the whole group here supporting you so just remember that when you're out there and you need a lift. One last thing I did which really helped me. I wrote on my arm my instructions and my inspiration so when I needed a lift I just looked at what I wrote on my arm to get me refocused and to remind my why I needed to keep going. I did it in this order: Instuctions: Finish Patience Inspiration: Asphalt Junkies Wildwood Warriors DVS JMK Tony Lo It really worked for me. I also had my kids sign my Wisconsin IM run hat so I felt like they were with me on the entire run. Edited by strikyr 2013-10-22 8:21 AM |

You guys let me know if you think of anything I am missing: Morning of clothes I can leave at beach: Socks Shoes Pants Sweater or jacket Gloves? Beanie? Carry sack Gear for swim: Goggles Wetsuit baggies for feet to put on wetsuit Wetsuit sleeves Body glide Swim Caps? Ear plugs Jammers Put sun block on that morning? T1 Bag - Bike gear: This checklist? Helmet Tri shoes Gloves (thick ones) Blue jersey Red sleeveless jersey Arm sleeves Cycling shorts (both pairs) Socks Glasses Infinit (Go far) Stinger waffle HR strap Water bottles (when to put on?) Towel? Other things to bring: Bike Extra wheels? Tire pump Trainer Trainer block Bike special needs: Spare tube Spare CO2 Spare bike tools Extra infinit? Spare bottle? lip balm? T2 Bag - Run gear: This checklist? HR Watch HR strap Running shoes Socks Running belt Visor? Tri shorts SS shirt Sleeveless shirt 2XU Sport beans Stinger waffle Infinit napalm Compression shorts Running shorts Run special needs: Long sleeve shirt Thin gloves Jacket? Spare IM watch Lip balm Socks Stinger waffle Sport beans Infinit napalm fresh socks? Towels needed anywhere else? Will just a few things. The HR monitor and watch don't you want that for the bike as well? Should that not be in the bike bag? For your spare tools not sure if you can carry it or not but electrial tape and extra tie wraps come in handy. I don't think you need the spare wheel but the spare tube and CO2's are a great idea I did the same for bike SN's bag. I also had extra Infinit mix in there as well so I could refill my bottles for the bike leg. And yes I did have a towel in my Bike bag to dry off in T1 since I did a full change. I did the same for the run as well. Otherwise your lists look good. I'll look them over again and think about it some more. You have more to deal with than I did since the weather is cooler. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by mambos Dirk, glad to see the knee is progressing along. Matt congrats on the win and for your two performances, damn those are smoking fast times! You've really upped your game on the run and I have no doubt you'll be able to get under 1:40 for the next HM you attempt to do. I'd be happy with a 5K under 25:00 lol. Great job keep up the great work. |

I don't have the awesome IM watch. I have a cateye computer on the bike (w/ HR strap) and then a basic garmin watch/HR strap for the run... so I've got to swap out HR straps and throw on the watch during T2. I've noticed my watch has been going dim a few times... hope the battery is not going dead... but going to put a watch in my SN run bag just in case so that I can at least have time even if I lose HR. The spare wheels are my normal ones in case it is too windy for the Zipps. Great idea on the tape and zip ties. Thanks! |
